You're good for what you are Black Bear, a greasy spoon diner with American themed food and huge portions. What you lack in quality you more than make up for in quantity. I appreciate that you opened up a new spot in Grants Pass because to me you are like Starbucks, McDonalds and all those other franchises, sub par and convenient. I like that I can walk in and order what I want knowing it's going to be what it was when I had it in California, Washington, etc. The service was ok. Small town servers with small talk and even smaller attention span. The humor factor really upped this review a star (hence the 2 stars rather than 1), because two of the waitresses actually had beehives! I just couldn't stop the internal laughter. A safe bet for traditional American food. I would stick to breakfast and other simple stuff, like burgers and sandwiches. It's best to expect grease and comfort. I had the sourdough cheeseburger and my friend had the "Big Bear" burger. Both were really good, but the salad that accompanied my meal should have been tossed that morning. I've been to a lot of Black Bear's in my years. My Mom and Step-Dad get points on their credit card by coming here. So this is always there first choice up and down California and Oregon. This specific location is my favorite. It's pretty new, love the decor. The main reason it's my favorite is because it was a busy location and I saw not one but two managers walking around and helping out the waiters and waitresses. My friends and I have been to a LOT of Black Bear Diners on our rides and local. NEVER have we experienced such awful food. The salads were VERY unfresh and when one was taken from our table the excuse was that's the best they had and nothing given in return. Each and every persons meal was also lacking in freshness / flavor or cooked correctly ( over cooked ). Our table consisted of 12 people and the restaurant was NOT busy enough for a table of 12 to overtake the kitchen. Wanted to try out a snazzy looking log bistro with my family and my niece's family for dinner on 10/2/21. We were told there would be a 55-75 minute wait due to the staffing shortage caused by mandates etc. We went to Black Bear diner instead and were seated immediately which is awesome with a group of 9. Our servers were great! We had our salads less than a minute after ordering and the food was served hot, as ordered and delicious. The portions were large and the huckleberry lemonade was so good. I have had breakfast at Black Bear many times and it's always great. This was my first time having dinner here and it was less than great. They were out of soup, out of almost every dessert on the menu and I was given a fork with my ice cream because they were out of #@$&* spoons! Pot roast was more lumps of fat than meat and looked a lot like it was the leftover trimmings. Atmosphere is very Chuck E Cheese with unsupervised children running around everywhere and screaming. The staff here is great. Everybody has a smile on their face and is more than accommodating to your needs. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food that you get as well as the overall quality of it. It's all very delicious! I had ordered a chicken Caesar salad and it was so fresh and very well-prepared. Not to mention it was huge LOL. We went in with a party of seven, so everybody got something different and kind of shared LOL. Definitely a thumbs up and five stars from my husband and I. I'll have to post some pictures, and pictures of the menus. This is quite honestly one of the most consistent restaurants I think I have ever gone to. And I can say this for every location I have ever been to throughout Washington state, Oregon and California as well as Arizona. Their coffee, and every single meal I have ever ordered throughout these states have been consistently equal in quality. I find that to be absolutely one of the hardest things any food establishment can supply. Some places have inconsistency of service, but that is truly far and few between. If you are looking for quality food, quantity of food, and consistency of flavor then look no further. It's not often I really give a five star Rating to any establishment even to those who I really do believe are deserving of such. But when you have an establishment that through multiple states gives you complete and total consistency it's very hard to say that they are not five star. Not all locations look as clean inside as others or even have the same Decour that would warrant a five star rating. But the consistency and quality of food and service does warrant such rating. read more

Great service! Stopped in after filling up at the gas station and being told that this is the best place for dinner. I can't say anything about anything else in town but I'm glad we went. Excellent service and amazing pricing! Everything is locally sourced from the northwest and they provide a great ambience! When we pulled up I thought this place is really nice it's going to do some damage to the pocket book. When in fact it isn't much more then Denny's down the street. There is a nice little walking area along the river with little critter statues and everything is carved or etched beautiful. First it's very easy to get to off I5. If your lucky enough to drive a tesla then stop here and charge. There is four tesla superchargers in the back of the parking lot. The food here is hit or miss. Breakfast seems to always be good. Lunch and dinner differ. My last visit I had the chicken avocado club. The chicken was so over cooked it was like leather. We stopped by this diner on a whim because it was one of the few restaurants open on Labor Day. The bear theme is apparent everywhere. They have a few shelves at the entrance displaying stuffed bears, t-shirts, canned bear (the cute variety) and other black bear paraphernalia for sale. The dining room is large and the tables / utensils were clean. The service team is very sweet and will bend over backwards to help you out. Despite the fact that they got two of our three orders wrong (one the waitress apologized for and the other was the kitchen's mistake), they were very apologetic and were very quick at getting them corrected so they gain points rather than lose them for that. Serving portions are large! I had an egg white veggie scramble with dry toast / fruit and I didn't have room for anything other than the eggs. I'm still not sure about the zucchini and squash addition to it, but I still liked it. The other people in my party had the hot meatloaf sandwich which she enjoyed and turkey avocado sandwich that he thought was pretty good. Well...the décor is fun. The wait staff is nice, but it took a long time for dinner to arrive and it wasn't actually worth the wait. I had the tri-tip dip (French dip sandwich) and the meat was gritty. Too scary to think about. The waitress did note my food allergies. Poor British hubby had the fish & chips, requesting no salt on the fries which was ignored or maybe the fries are pre-seasoned. The codfish appeared to be that pre-breaded stuff from the freezer, and the fries are also the frozen kind. Hubby is not a happy camper. No beer on tap, only bottled. This place isn't for people who expect a nice meal; more for travelers and families. Very disappointed with every aspect of the restaurant. My wife and I ordered our meals. When served our food we were then told they were out of the gravy. We were offered substitutes, but would have preferred to order something else if I was given the option. The ribs were burnt and rough just like old beef jerky. The steak was smothered in pepper. Black Bear Diner was AMAZING and, (to be dramatic), a life saving experience! It's a very long story but to TRY & make it short, because of a traffic accident on the 5, my friend & I wound up at the Black Bear Diner to try and regroup. Black Bear's manager, and knight in shinning armor, Russ, went above & BEYOND to comfort us, make us laugh and then reassure us that he'd find us a route to our destination. He left our table and while my friend and I comforted ourselves over fries and a cola, Russ came back to our table with an alternate route, more laughs and a saved weekend! The staff was extremely friendly not only to us but to all the other customers who came in.
