Chefs and food are wonderful. Glasses are old and look filthy. Be classy...buy new drinking glasses. Your customers pay you enough. Don't be cheap! Upper management is dishonest and shady. Great food and service! We were passing by to stop for lunch and all the servers and cooks were wearing masks. I would say about 85% of the patrons that came in did not and did not follow any protocols. There were signs not to sit on specific tables and chairs and they sat anyway. The servers did not say anything. One lady sat right next to an occupied table and started coughing and wiping her nose etc all without a mask!! No one said anything to her. There should be signs that everyone entering should wear face coverings and if needed to wait for a table they should wait outside for social distancing. Kids were running around too. read more

Good food. Mediocre service. I decided to go here on a whim, just to try some place new. I was seated immediately which is always nice but they tryed taking my order before I even had a chance to get to my table, let alone sit down. I ordered a coffee and it was served right away but i asked for another minute to look over the menu for my food selection. I didn't see my my waitress again. Another waitor finally stopped at my table about 10 minutes later and apologized. I had been handed off to him and heforgot about me... After that though, everything was very good. We ordered these items, liked most of the items: Spicy Cabo Fish tacos: Awesome, best item of everything we ordered. Chicken Fajita Omlette: Decent. (had the eggs substituted with egg beaters and they did it with no fuss and no charge). The chicken ingredient in it did not go with the rest of it. Once I added salt & pepper, it tasted good. Went with the toast (sour dough) - sucked, should have gone with the biscuit. Turger Burger: pretty good. Their sides: hash browns (most preferred), cole slaw and fries were pretty good. When I brought it up to our waitress attention she was very apologetic, but she also said "sorry for that, our cooks don't feel like cooking"... um, hello. WTF???? are you kidding me!!!! If you want a fun place to take young children for breakfast and see the adorable stuffed bears and log counter stools, this is the place to go. If you want a great breakfast ...not so much. My husband ordered an omelette with country potatoes. The potatoes were way underdone and inedible. The link sausage were absolutely tasteless. Believe me, I tried to find a hint of seasoning. Nothing. My OJ was forgotten and never brought. We mentioned the potatoes and our server said that's the way they always are. It was a new supplier. Huh??? Why would you offer food that you know is inferior quality and then tell the customer?!? The omlette was ok, nothing to rave about as was my one friend egg. Altogether very disappointing. We were then told that it was going to be another 30-40 minutes due to a large food order getting called in. Really good, friendly servers, but too few, running in slow-motion. A breakfast specialty diner where the cooks cannot cook eggs correctly to save their lives. Seemingly too many people in the kitchen, yet food is prepared at glacial speed. Entrees that are great, coupled with mediocre sides, or, vice versa. AND, worst of all, margarine...REALLY??? I've been to quite a few Black Bears. There are two that I recommend; one in Bend, the other is in Grants Pass. This restaurant is good, friendly, and clean. The food here is hot and fresh when it comes to your table. You can drink the coffee black, and actually like it! Even with the restrictions on them during the Covid, the wait staff is professional and welcoming. The food is typical breakfast fare, but good tasting. Totally recommend this Black Bear! read more

I came in this morning & was very disappointed. I ordered scrambled eggs, toast & bacon, not a hard order to make, but the service was very slow, the bacon & toast were burnt. The waitess never came back to our table once she dropped off our meal , never came back to even give us the bill. I had to go to the cashier & tell her what we ordered to pay. We ate there last night or should I say we tried to eat there for dinner. We had poor service and after waiting a hour we got up and told the waitress we were leaving. It was eight In the evening and not busy, several other people were waiting as well and looking very unhappy. As we were leaving there was another man at the front desk complaint about his take out order, stating it was the worst food he had ever received. He was very upset. I give this four stars only because MOST of the time the food is excellent and very good portions. Yesterday December 2 2019 My Mom and I and a friend ate there and our order was incorrect, the waitress being really kind said she would fix it. We declined and proceeded to eat the sub par burger. Burger was dry, bun was dry too, almost to the extent of being crunchy... Fries were good, but geez folks, I have been a fan of Black Bear since Mt Shasta opened! PLEASE fix this problem. This restaurant is incredible. Has a excellent feel of the outdoors while also the sounds and smells of a food palace! I had the Bigfoot chicken fried steak with French fries, green beans and a clam chowder and cornbread muffin. The clam chowder to start, was excellently made, also the perfect size for a starter. The chicken fried steak took up just about half the plate; was gigantic, fittingly holding the name Bigfoot. This may be the best CFS that I've had. The service matched the food, purely excellent. I had an excellent meal and plan on returning to Black Bear Diner on my next visit to Grants Pass. read more

Stopped here to use supercharger in the parking lot and get lunch. There was an RV blocking all but two chargers. Blocking EV chargers is ILLEGAL in OREGON. But on private property it's up to the owner of that property to enforce this law, which Black Bear Diner declined to do, even though multiple cars were waiting to use the chargers. Decided not to patronize this establishment for this reason. read more

HOPING THE HEAD COOK CALLED OUT SICK...because if that's the A team, we've got problems. I gave this one star because there was five of us and only one was happy with their food. Our server was pleasant, but seemed to indicate that kitchen issues were not uncommon. You can measure a breakfast cooks skill by how well they prepare an over medium egg..whites done, yolk runny. After sending the eggs back and getting the same over cooked eggs we gave up. Three of us ordered biscuits and gravy which were all barely lukewarm to the touch. To finish it off, my blonde haired family found a black hair in her gravy. We've always loved Black Bear Diner during our travels and will try again in a different location. This is one of our favorite breakfast places in town. Food is always great. We love the people who work here. We never leave hungry

We went to this Black bear Diner along with another couple who have previously eaten there and raved about the service and food. Service was so slow and poor that we honestly were wondering if the waitress went home. My tuna salad had plenty of a tuna mixture atop a bed of lettuce with a side of very stale and dry-looking shredded carrots that weren't fit to be eaten. My husband's meatloaf had absolutely no taste whatsoever. When we departed, I noticed at least three tables that hadn't been cleared, so obviously there's a staffing problem. I'll find elsewhere to spend my money for a meal. read more

We stopped here after a long grueling day in the car. It felt like we were almost home as we have a Black Bear where we live. Great comfort food. Salmon was delicious and my wife's meatloaf was very tasty also. Waitstaff were attentive and friendly with a special shout out for Sarah our server who did an awesome job. Always worth a visit to one of the ever expanding restaurants in the Black Bear chain. I also love the local atmosphere of the menus which share interesting news articles from the 1960's from that locale. read more

A group of us went for lunch and waited well over an hour for our food - but when it came it was awful! The lettuce on the sandwich was so limp & discolored it looked like it was scrounged from the waste pile. The green beans were mush - the only thing holding them together was the generous coating of oil on them. Chicken strips were dry & tough. But the worst was the BLT - WITH NO TOMATO! Only two dry pieces of bread with bacon and the aforementioned disgusting lettuce. No mayo, nothing! Waitress said they were out of tomato. Really? And then the waitress gave the man a bill for his dry BLT minus the T. Then 2 people were billed for drinks they didn't have. The 3rd one got a bill for some different dish but the waitress said it was the same price so it was OK. No, sorry, We won't be going back ever! read more

I'm part of the staff. I started in the back of the house and I'm now in service. While in the baking department I learned just how much of the menu is homemade from Black bears recipes. Most of it from the meatloaf to the bacon onion ranch to the beef hash all made on site. I personally enjoy serving the good ppl who choose The Bear. Hope to see you soon JC read more

Always good home cooked meals and well I spent $45 on dinner for three last night just for the food and two of our dinners were just terrible and the third was not good at all this is worst time I've ever had at the Black bear restaurant the turkey did not taste like turkey whatsoever it was terribly small portions yes soup stuck to my spoon it was cold and hard it was very little portions and anything in the food did not taste like it was supposed to be I can't believe this black bear would put out such bad food I'm not going back to the Black bear ever and I personally have been a devoted customer for them for the last 678 years I plan my trips that is for ever read more

Ate lunch here. Restaurant right off of Grant Pass exit on way to Salem Oregon. Service was a little slow to take order and then delivering entrees or maybe kitchen preparers slow. Ordered pot roast and fish & chips thinking that these are entrees that would be quicker to prepare. This is definitely diner food and tasted okay. Decor was nice, old time 60's music was playing, and booth seating. Internet at Grant's Pass was very poor on our mobile phones. Restaurant's Internet also was not working. Ugh. This place. I haven't been angry with almost every point of service in a restaurant in a long time. But this place!!! Our server: incompetent. She got our order wrong TWICE, never refilled our drinks at all in the hour we were there, and just was way too ridiculous to get it right even a little. Once everyone actually had their meals, 4 out of 5 of them were bad. Honestly bad. My daughter's tri-tip was nothing but fat. I tried cutting it off and was left with a sliver of actual meat. She was given that and a spoonful of mashed potatoes. That's it. They got kids' mac and cheese, potato salad, meat loaf, French dip sandwich, and eggs all wrong. All of it! How is that even possible? Either not seasoned or too seasoned or tasteless or gross. Ugh. It was also packed and busy and loud, which would be awesome if we were all getting great food and/or good service. I thought breakfast on a cold, rainy day would be lovely. My biggest downfall is that I can't make pancakes to save my life, so when I want them, I have to go to a restaurant....which is what led us to the Black Bear Diner today. We ordered to go, so we could take our dinner home and eat it in our jammies - it's breakfast, right? My first indicator of how the meal was going to go was when I placed the to-go order on the phone. The waitress kept telling me she couldn't hear me, and I could hear the staff laughing and joking in the background. When we arrived, there were very few cars in the parking lot - not a good sign on a Saturday evening. I had sent my teenage daughter in to pick up the food, so I had no idea the total was $31 for two breakfasts! When we got home, we realized why - they had doubled my daughter's order, and charged us for a full stack of pancakes instead of a short stack. I had 2 eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns, she had sausage, eggs, and pancakes. They forgot to include my toast, so I split my daughter's pancakes with her. The sausages were undercooked on the inside, and blackened on the outside. We had to microwave them to be sure she didn't get sick. My bacon was burned to a crisp in most places. Her eggs were scrambled, that's pretty hard to mess up - but the over-medium eggs I ordered were cooked over-hard. The hashbrowns were burned, crunchy to the point of being inedible, and tasted of a dirty grill - gross. I didn't even attempt eating them after the first bite. The eggs also had the dirty grill flavor. The only decent food were the pancakes, and thankfully the gave us 6 huge ones. Since they charged us for a full stack instead of the short stack I ordered, I guess it's good that they actually gave them to us (unlike my toast). I will NEVER be back. I usually give restaurants a second chance when I have a bad meal, but with so many things wrong, there's no way I would even bother. Keep your money local and dine at one of the small cafes - this chain restaurant isn't worth the money. read more
