This is the first time I can remember being disappointed at a Black Bear Diner. We have visited them all over the West Coast, including the first location in the Mount Shasta, CA area. The first issue was the seating. Instead of putting our party at an area that had tables that could be moved together five of us were put at a booth meant for four people. The area with more capacity was by the door that leads to the outdoor dining, and was being used by other patrons, with more room available. A chair wa placed at the end of the table for the booth we were in. The legs for the table were such that I had to "tuck" my feet under the chair I was sitting on. This was very uncomfortable for someone who had seven knee surgeries. During the meal I had to place the plate with my biscuit onto my knee to get my coffee refilled, either that or the server would have needed to reach over me to refill it. The food was a bit of a disappointment for two of us. I had the chicken fried steak with country potatoes. My wife had eggs Benedict with loaded hash browns. My county potatoes were actually cool, not cold, not even warm, cool. What made them semi-warm was the gravy on top of them. My wife's potatoes appear to have been sitting around. They were more than crispy, being hard, and cold. The eggs for the eggs Benedict were almost completely hard cooked. The yolk was not at all runny, to blend in with the sauce. Her fruit cup had lots of water in it, and the melon was not as ripe as it should have been. She remarked later she should have gotten the biscuit. We did not complain to the server. Had we done so everyone else in our party would have finished their meals by the time our replacement would have arrived. Well over $100 spent for a disappointing experience. Well this will be final visit. The last two times our food came out lukewarm as if sitting 10 minutes. It really didn't make sense today because we were the only order in, the place empty except two tables and they were eating. Once again the country gravy tastes so bland like made with flour and water. No seasoning or creaminess. We both had meals with the gravy. I was hoping if I sliced my sausage to add to the gravy and added a bunch of black pepper it would help but not really. Anyway my husband won't send food back, he's heard too many stories. Plus he said hash browns not cooked thoroughly. Needless to say we both ate less than half our meals. For a so called home style restaurant chain I would think something like a country gravy staple would be creamy flavorful perfection. And food not served hot is an immediate let down. read more

I'm a long time Black Bear Diner fan. Even worked there in 2017. I've always been a fan of the amazing customer service, food quality and consistency among locations. The quality must have gone down significantly. This location was the worst I have been to. They had over 20 people on staff and I got next to no service. I saw my server once to take my order and then to pay my bill. I wanted to order dessert and something extra to-go, but decided to just leave after paying. It took over 25 minutes to get my food. I ordered the parmesan sourdough burger which used to be my favorite. It was plated nicely and initially looked good. However, the burger patty was low-quality and clearly frozen, you can always tell as it tastes "off. The bread wasn't even the same. The soda had almost no carbonation. Really disappointing for an almost $25 meal. This is not the same restaurant I used to rave about because everything tasted homemade and the service was incredible. What a shame. read more

We had a decent breakfast. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. I got the avocado toast, which was literally toast with avocado on it. I added the lettuce and tomato and sprinkled salt and pepper, so it was like eating an open-faced sandwich. I also got a side of country potatoes. They were not crispy, so not my favorite. I had to add salt and hot sauce to give them some flavor, and the onions weren't cooked very well, so they were quite crunchy. My husband got the Big Grizz and felt the same: his meal was just ok. I'm a die hard black bear Diner man from Way back. Not today! Visited the Puyallup store to redeem my birthday breakfast. Was not greeted by anyone when we entered. The host just told us to sit in a booth. Proceeded to sit there for the next 15 minutes when no one came by to offer us something to drink. As soon as I was standing up to leave at this point, the waiter who had been laughing with other people in the kitchen for quite some time, came up to us and ask us if we would like something to drink. Excited to eat the 4th of July breakfast here. Ordered my favorite chicken fried steak, over easy eggs and country potatoes. While the steak was good, the eggs and potatoes were cold, really cold. Potatoes were so soft they were lmost mash potatoes. No flavor. This is our second attempt eating at the Puyallup location 5 minutes from home. It was painfully mediocre at best. I had chicken fried steak with loaded country potatoes and eggs. The steak was fine, good breading and not tough, but the gravy was watery and tasteless; like, seriously, it was a hair stiffer than milk. The potatoes and vegetables were undercooked and crunchy, the eggs were plasticy and burnt, and the biscuit was hard as a rock all the way through, with the same bland, thin gravy as the CFS. I tried my girlfriends chocolate chip pancakes as well, they were good. Fluffy, sweet, and a good portion. So I guess it's okay if you want something that doesn't take actual effort to prepare for a quick bite, but if you want good diner food, your local, family-owned location will probably do better. read more

We always get a good meal here! First off, their pancakes are delicious! They did a good job cooking my eggs to order. I really liked their sausage links, but thought their bacon was a bit bland. My wife had the tri-tip dip. The meat was good quality, well seasoned and cooked. Au just was tasty and the baked potato was yummy! The ambience is very much a family diner feel. I have always heard how great Black Bear Diners are and I've never gotten a chance to eat at one until tonight. Let me say this much.... It was fantastically awesome.! First of all, let's talk about the setting .... Very open, friendly, well lit with comfortable chairs and clean. Kind of a homestyle restaurant setting which I think makes one fill at home when eating out. I love how basic it is with no fancy menus but newspaper type menus with a lot of things to choose from. They serve breakfast all day and evening.... Which I'm definitely going to go back and try next. Our server, Neal, was most pleasant and made us feel very welcome. He was on his game by getting us drinks right away and then giving us time to look over the menu before coming back and taking our order. Always smiling and very pleasant and making sure we had everything we needed through our entire meal. Returning frequently to make sure we well taking care of and if we needed anything. Thank you again for your awesome service... We really appreciated it! The meal was fantastic.... I had the chicken fried steak with red peeled, mashed potatoes and onion rings, and the steak was cooked to perfection. In all fairness, it was probably the best chicken fried steak. I think I've ever had in my life. The mashed potatoes were also equally as awesome coupled with the onion rings, which were quite tasty. I had a glass of the Huckleberry Lemonade, which I highly recommend because it is quite tasty and well balanced. The prices were reasonable for the amount of food we got. I ended up taking half of the steak home because it was just so much food and I couldn't eat it all at the time. It did make a tasty late night snack for me though and was equally just as good later on. My only regret is I didn't have room for dessert and their desserts look fantastic which I also want to go back and try sometime.. In conclusion, if you've never been to a Black Bear Diner, you need to go.... and I highly recommend this one because the staff is extremely friendly and very courteous.... that coupled with awesome food you will not regret your experience. read more

Came here because I was craving Dutch apple pie and this place looked like the type of place that has that. They don't. But they had lots of large individual pies. I went for the banana cream pie and it wasn't smooth like pudding, but a little plasticky like it's firmed up with chemicals. Still, I enjoyed it. Sis tried the carrot cake which she liked okay. We both had coffee and it was fine. I think I'd like this place better if I had tried the food, but we were just in the mood for desserts. Will come back another time because I do like this type of food, American comfort food. Black bear diner is usually an ok easy meal stop. Food is usually on par for west coast diners with west coast influences. However today we went for an early dinner at this location and I ordered a tri tip dip with grilled onions and mushrooms. When it arrived it was covered in cheese. Melted cheese coating all the meat, veg, and bread roll. Our waitress didn't stop back by our table until after my husband had almost finished his meal to ask if we wanted boxes. My meal still untouched because of all the cheese that I did not order. The server then repeatedly told me I ordered grilled onions and cheese no mushroom. When I said no I asked for grilled onions and mushrooms to be added nothing else she said no you didn't. I had the kitchen remake it plain no add ons. She came back to the table with my sandwich and the check and she discounted the price of my meal based on the extra charges for the add ons that I didn't get. We weren't the only table that left this servers section upset. So I ate a quarter of the sandwich and left after having to get our own box from the server station because she did not come back to the table again. read more

Unfortunately it seems like we have a different experience every time we come here. This time, the service was amazing but the chef/kitchen was having a really down day. Our server was kind and conscientious enough to stay on top of the kitchen for us - but they shouldn't have to do that. My order came out wrong (missing ingredients and with ingredients on it that the menu didn't mention), and both of our breakfast potatoes came out badly burnt. Sadly I don't think we will go again as it has been so inconsistent. read more

Went here and was underwhelmed. We had a very nice waitress who was trying to make up for all the issues. Cold food, skimpy portions on a custom ordered item-made by the manager who should practice up on his service recovery skills. The restaurant was full of dirty tables, the only place to sit had a big hole in the seat. An ominous warning. We weee using a gift card that my wife's colleagues had provided to her when her dad passed. This didn't make it easier and then the manager wanted to push back on his part of the performance. At some point just say sorry and move on. We received a small discount-which we used as a tip, but we are struggling to want to use the little bit left of $100 gift card on a bad breakfast for 4. The food was cold and not made properly but the manager was the cook he said. Then you should know that any egg dish gets cold quickly. Went for family birthdays. The place was NOT busy yet we had to wait quite a LONG time for our food. When it arrived my nephews steak was way over cooked. The corn bread came out way before the dinners. I was really looking forward to the California eggs Benedict (menu description sounded delightful). When they FINALY came.... The eggs were so over cooked that they were hard boiled! Eggs Benedict eggs are supposed to be poached! From what I just read in other reviews this sounds like a regular occurrence. Here's a thought.... Get a new cook! I like crispy hash browns but these were BURNT, and they tasted like the griddle had not been cleaned. The hollandaise was coagulated, and the English muffin was soggy. After dropping the food off, the waitress was non existent. It took forever for the waitress to come check in and when I showed her my food she just said sorry. I can have them re-make it. I told her I didn't have time for that since it took so long the first time. No offer to take off the bill or anything. I did not want to make a scene as it was supposed to be a celebration. At least my fruit was edible. We had to flag down another server for drink refills (again, they were NOT busy). They did sing happy birthday to the kids which was nice.
