As we were being shown to our table, I noticed that I couldn't take more than two steps without stepping on dropped food, straw wrappers, etc. As we reached our table, there was so much garbage on the floor under it that I was shocked that the staff would seat someone in that kind of mess. I also noticed that there was a palm-size sticky spot on the table that hadn't been completely wiped off. Before we even sat down, I told my husband that I wanted to go somewhere else. Had breakfast this morning at Black Bear Diner in Riverton, UT for Veteran's Day. We both had the 2x2x2 breakfast. The food was amazing, cooked perfectly. The service was also amazing. We were seated as soon as we walked in the door. Riley approached our table very soon after we were seated. I'm kind of fussy with my eggs, but the chef cooked them just the way I like them. My wife and I are repeat customers. The food and service are usually good. Today I ordered a take out meal for the first time and was surprised when the bill was about 70 cents higher than anticipated. When I questioned the employee about it, she mumbled something about sales tax. The meal was $13.49. With 7.25% sales tax, the total should have been $14.47, not $15.19. The shift manager came over and printed an itemized bill instead of just the credit card total charge receipt I'd been previously given. There on the itemized receipt was the explanation for the cost differential. There was an undisclosed $.54 "packaging fee" (plus sales tax on the fee). Big Bear charges for take home container?! I would have thought that the savings from not washing dishes, utensils, the risk of broken dishes, and the cost of smaller leftover take home containers would balance out. Apparently not. Either that, or management has adopted the airline philosophy of nickel and dimeing their customers with any excuse to increase profits. Even so, customers should be notified of the fee in advance, either verbally or via a prominent sign. Neither the employee or the shift manager seemed aware of the fee before we jointly examined the itemized receipt. read more

Service is horrible, no one including the manager helped us. We waited while multiple waitresses walked past us with no one willing to talk to us or inform us of the wait time. My family finally walked out after the manager just walked past us several times with no help. Went on a Friday morning not even busy waited for 15 minutes. Second time eating here. The other time was a year or so back and I got a burger. From what I remember it was great. This time I got breakfast thru a delivery service. I got French toast. I was very let down. They offered strawberries for a extra $3 and I thought I bet they give you a good amount, I thought I was going to get some great maple syrup and I thought it was just white bread they made it with. No where on the delivery service did it say sourdough. And if it's not that - what showed up was then very wrong. It tasted as if it had gone bad. The syrup that was provided was the same as I have gotten at a fast food place. And the amount of strawberries was a let down. They had also place my side of whip cream in with the hot food so what showed up was liquid cream not whipped. I was just really let down. I have heard so many good things about this place. We love the Black Bear for breakfast. We always go to the one in West Jordan. We were so happy to see them open one in Riverton. But after trying it three different times and always getting the same result....we'll be sticking with the West Jordan location. We had to ask every single time to have our coffee refilled. It takes 20-30 minutes to get our food and every time it comes out cold. For this to happen 3 separate times is ridiculous. Each time they were not too busy. Arrived at 7:15 pm. The greeter informed us that they had a 45 minute wait (they close at 8 pm) so she was told to not seat new guests. The restaurant had to be half full, maybe only a third full. Tons of tables just sat there. I'm sure they were understaffed but the optics looked very bad with so many tables unoccupied. We asked to speak with the manager and confirm what the greeter mentioned. She left to check and returned saying the manager was "too busy talking with seated guests" to speak with us. The food was fine; however, the service tonight was terrible. The hostesses were frequently visibly chewing food at the hostess station - that is, when they were manning the hostess station. Part of the problem was that the hostesses were trying to pull quadruple duty: hostess, waitress, bus, and cashier. And our wait time to be seated was twice as long as was estimated. People were waiting several minutes at times to pay before leaving. And busing was sloppy, so thing we're not cleaned adequately. There were crumbs and food particles left on the tables and food and trash on the floor beneath the tables. Our waitress/hostess took our order in a timely manner, and our food was delivered in a timely manner; however, our meals were incomplete. She asked if we wanted the cornbread muffin which was included in our meals, and we said yes. (She never offered the biscuit as an alternative.) Then the muffins weren't brought. Also, we were never offered soup or salad which is also supposed to be included, and none was brought. Further, after delivering the food, she never once returned to check on us, so we didn't get the opportunity to ask about the missing items, nor an opportunity for drink refills. Yet there was a WAIT! We usually choose this spot as our breakfast place because their pancakes are to die for and usually the service is never an issue. Welp, today sucked. We waited about 20 mins for a table and when we got one, I believe our servers name was Kelsey. We were seated in the area behind the registers up front where there were only like 2 other tables seated as well, which lead me to believe it was being treated as tables needed to be taken outside of the servers section because you never saw the same person working back there. She greeted us pretty quickly, asked us for drinks, and we said two coffees and two waters. She brought back the waters and never brought us the coffee. We waited about 30-35 mins for our food which is a lot longer than normal, but what was really annoying was the fact that after 25 mins of waiting, we were told they were out of the cinnamon roll french toast, which is what i ordered. Not sure why it took 25 mins to notice but this is only extra irritating because every time we come here and try to order it, they never have it. She was only seen again to tell us about the kitchen not having what we wanted and then again when delivering our food, which wasn't even that hot. After that, we didn't see her again until she was delivering the bill, which still had the charge for the french toast on the bill when we couldn't even have it. We tried to get her attention to come have her remove it but was unsuccessful and then we just agreed to bring it up at checkout in the front. She didn't charge us for the coffees which further confirmed we knew she forgot. Another thing we noticed is that in the time of our dine in, a party of 14 was sat right next to us and it was a real bummer seeing how attentive that server was to their table. Pretty sure most of them ordered coffee and got it immediately, so that debunked our theory that maybe they were out and that's why we didn't get it. The real kicker was seeing their food delivered to them as we were leaving and thinking how the heck did a party of 14 wait less to receive their food than just 2 people who was seated way before them. Every breakfast I have eaten at Black Bear Riverton has been served exactly as ordered, hot and delicious. The waffles are beyond yummy. The price on the items I order offers a good value relative to other restaurants serving similar items. Even when there are many customers waiting for tables, the host does a great job of getting customers seated and the wait staff is prompt to provide menus. We came here for dinner. There were 4 of us. My 8 year old ordered the kids pasta. I ordered the Tri-Tip Combo. My other daughter ordered the chicken pot pie and my husband ordered a burger. Pasta was basically mush. My daughter kept saying it tasted really bad and I kept telling her to take another bite. I finally tasted it myself and then felt bad I made her take that second bite. It was cold and mushy and had little flavor. Tri-Tip Combo. I liked the green beans and the potatoes. The Trip-Tip seemed to be previously cooked, refrigerated and then microwaved. It was tender but had an odd texture so I did not eat it. The ribs themselves had no flavor and then they slathered them with cold BBQ sauce that wasn't warmed or carmeylized at all. They probably pan roast these. They had no smoky flavor at all. Liquid smoke would go along way if they are going to pan roast and not smoke their ribs. Hamburger was just ok.. as my husband put it. So $50 later and two people who didn't even eat their dinner we are heading home for cereal:) I've eaten at this place for breakfast and it was okay far better than the dinner and that's why I'm giving it two Star. As far as service goes I felt like nobody really enjoy their job there. This was our second time going there during the night shift. Normally we go in the morning. But this was honestly the most horrible experience I have ever had there. Twice at night. We are a family of 5. Two adults three toddlers. We ordered two meals because we normally share with the kids. It took us an hour and half to receive our dinner. Everything was wrong and everything was burnt. People who came after us with bigger groups left before us. We had the same waitress twice when this happened. If you go at night. Ask for anyone else beside the girl with the super long black hair. Nicole was nice and took off a meal but it was just ridiculous. She tried saying they were busy but the first time we went there. There were three table tops. The waitress forgot the kids drinks and disappeared for a long time while our food sat under the lap staying warm. My husbands steak sandwich was still bleeding. When he gets it medium well. He didn't get his sweet potato fries. My pancakes were burnt on each side and the hash browns were so hard I could hardly eat them. Black Bear! What happened!? I think this is a location that is clearly battling to figure out how to adapt to COVID, even tho it's been around well over a year. So your entire party masks up and walks in, only to be told to go back out and wait in the car. Maybe put a sign OUTside, letting people know? The place was practically empty but there was a "40 min wait"? Why? Understaffed. On a weekend night. Add to that our waitress was incredibly rude. We asked about a meal we'd had there before and her response "you'll have to find it on the menu-I can't memorize everything". Yikes. I wouldn't expect anyone to memorize that large menu but the attitude was certainly not appropriated. Then the food was just nowhere near the standard it used to be. Sausages were dry enough to hammer nails with, hash browns where burnt! Biscuits super super dry. Each one in our party had at least something that wasn't right. Overall just not a good experience and we've been there multiple times before and the standards of everything just seem to have slipped. I didn't go here but my family asked me to write this review. About my family's experience(a family of 4 adults & a baby): They were seated quickly. They only gave them 3 menus & 3 sets of silverware, even though they said it was 4 people. However service to even get drinks took 20 minutes. (If I were there I would have walked out.) They weren't even looked at for that whole time. My sister had to stared down a server to FINALLY BE SERVED! When they were eventually served, the server screwed up half the orders! Mom's order got a protein style burger. They didn't have lettuce to make it how Mom wanted it. So Mom asked for just 2 patties. Simple? Nope! Not for Black Bear Diner. My sister had to ask 3 different times to get her shake, which they messed up too. Neapolitan shake, the server lied again! They didn't have vanilla ice cream, so it wasn't what my sister wanted. 2 out of the 4 orders were messed up, that's a fail! Rumor was it was the server's first day, however where was her trainer then? Nope I think not. They're overall experience at this Black Bear was awful. They wouldn't recommend going here ever. Management did take $9 dollars off of their bill. However this is extremely unacceptable. When you go out for service don't choose Black Bear Diner. read more

It deserves 2 stars only because we were not hungry after we left. The food was not restaurant quality. The best thing on the plate was the mashed potatoes.
