We were looking forward to trying this place out, but it wasn't great. There was a bit of a wait when we got there, and we ended up waiting just inside the outer doors. Apparently they don't check out there when they call out names, so we must have missed our call and waited about 15 minutes longer before having them check their list. Someone had crossed off my name, but they were able to seat us immediately, thankfully. My wife and I both ordered waters which didn't get a single refill, even after my wife mentioned it to one of the random people that brought her salad, which had the wrong dressing. Her "blackened" salmon had little to no spice on it at all, though she did find a hint of spice underneath after she ate it. It was also a bit rubbery. My cinnamon roll french toast only had topping on one of the three slices. The other two were completely dry. The biscuits and gravy were okay, but the gravy was somewhat sparse on the large biscuits. Our server barely spoke above a whisper and didn't return to the table after we had been served until we were completely done, and just to bring us the check. She never asked how the food was. When I was asked at the register, the lady seemed somewhat taken aback when I responded that it was "just okay", but she certainly didn't ask what could have been improved. Went in for a breakfast with my special lady friend on Valentine's Day. Wasn't intended to be the highlight of the day, just a quick breakfast where neither of us had to cook. I wish we would have. Cold cereal and yogurt would have been better than this experience. It was about 60° in the restaurant. I don't know if the heating was broken or what but I wasn't the only one that noticed. Almost everyone dining there had their jackets on. This poor couple next to us were complaining amongst themselves that the soda was flat. I wouldn't know cause that stuff is poison. Anyway, it took us 40 minutes to get our food. They weren't busy by any stretch of the imagination. The food was less than what I have come to expect from them. My toast seemed like it had been prepared an hour earlier, my eggs were subpar at best and I'm really not discerning when it comes to over easy eggs. I'll drive further in the future to avoid this place. I can't say I'll ever go back. I'll bet I would have had a better meal at the hospital across the street. read more

Sadly, this was the absolute worst experience we have ever had, with this restaurant chain. From the poor service, to the missed orders and undercooked and over cooked food. The restaurant was not busy, so the service should have been spot on. There were employees doing nothing, while the hostess/cashier was trying to clean tables and close out tickets. While telling customers there was a 15 minute wait time for her to clean tables. Missing cheese from cheeseburgers, raw tri-tip, when ordered well done and then missing side dishes. I don't normally have an issue paying $70 for 3 adults and 2 toddlers, but I'm down right angry about the waste of money for this outing. To top it off when asked how our meal was by the hostess, we told her our concerns and asked for the managers name, she was hesitant to give it, but then reluctant stated it was "Jen". Her apathy added insult to injury. While we haven't given up on Black Bear diner, we will never return to this location. Again a lackluster response, with no regard for customer service. I ordered their chicken fried steak Benedict thru a delivery service. Very disappointed. Their hollandaise sauce was a really bright yellow. Think close to neon. Terrible!!! After a 15 minute wait even though there was plenty of available tables, we were escorted to a dirty table. The hostess left my wife with the dish cloth to finish wiping up the table after the previous guests. Other than having our water refilled once, our drinks were never serviced after the initial drink. Then came the food-undercooked tri-tips, cheese-less cheeseburger and chicken fried steak that was not cooked well, however hash browns were cooked beyond edible. I frequent Black Bear Diners in Utah, Colorado and Idaho and have never had this poor of quality and service. Total waste of time and money! I would encourage this location to focus greatly on improving their service level as it is sorely lacking what we've come to expect (and look forward to) with the Black Bear Diner name. read more

We all know black bear diner is delicious! Portions are very generous and the food is home cooking/comfort food. The thing that puts this location over the top is the staff and the management. I have been to many locations in Utah, but the service at this location is top notch. You can tell how much the management truly cares about being the best for their customers. Great food, however service is pretty bad. Every time we go there half of the seating is open and they say there is a 15 to 30 minute wait. HINT TO MANAGEMENT: Sit people at the open tables and start them with drinks instead of craming them in you tiny waiting area. You're losing revenue like crazy, when people get sick of waiting and they go somewhere else. If you dont want a long wait go to IHOP or Corner Bakery. read more

We went for a quick bite it wasn't too busy I ordered a side of fruit and an English muffin my sister ordered a lite version of biscuits and bacon we waited over 45 minutes never once did our waitress come by and gave us an update on our order others around us were getting their orders even those that came after us. So I asked what is the status of our order since we ordered it like over 30 minutes ago she said oh yours is next 15 minutes later it wasn't next.. We were there for almost an hour and ended up leaving because 1- never did she at least come by and give us an update.. 2- I don't think she even put in our order & 3 - they need to properly train their waitress to know how to serve customers.. Just out of this place with my families, we waited half hour before the food served the people came after us was already done and left, when I pointed that out the waitress said she didn't pay attention who came first:( . According to everybody and my 3 year old, the ribs and omelet was over cooked, the chicken strips were very dry and stiff, the cornbread was below average, the veggie came with ribs were only corns. I didn't love it. The service was just ok. The waitress seemed annoyed and we only saw her a couple of times. When she brought our coffee she didn't bother to bring cream or sugar so we had to steal it from the next table. Our order took forever to come out and when it did it was wrong. Sent it back and when it came back the hash browns and bacon were extremely undercooked and inedible. Several friends recommended their breakfast, so I visited and ordered a breakfast of eggs, hash browns, sausage, and a waffle. I was very disappointed with the flavor of each item. The sausage was spicy, which was not pleasing to me. The eggs lacked flavor, requiring application of hot sauce. The waffle was very dry and tasted as if made from.biscuit dough. The hash browns were strips of potatoes with onions. Though the best of the items I ordered, they lacked the flavor and texture of "traditional " hash browns, requiring much catsup to be enjoyable. I'm disappointed because this location is close to our residence and very convenient, but, for my tastes, I will frequent Dickey's, 5 Guys Hamburgers, or other eating establishments in the area. read more

Black bear diner is one of our favorite restaurants ever!! The food is amazing. I usually order The Grizz and take all the extra home to eat in the morning! The portion sizes are big. The staff has always treated us wonderfully. The last 2 times we attended I tried something new- the breakfast croissant! SO GOOD. It's got a pesto aioli sauce and it's just so good I highly recommend. My hubby usually gets the meat lovers omelet, he recently tried the scrambowl and was also super happy with it! The pancakes are phenomenal, I usually take some home! There so sweet it's like dessert. And something about the heated syrup makes it so rich and tasty. Highly recommend!!!! read more

We've long heard about how wonderful Black Bear Diner is, so we finally decided to check it out on Christmas Eve morning. I wish I could offer the same raves other have, but I guess it just wasn't to be. A little about our experience: Atmosphere: I could give this 5 stars. The decor fits the name perfectly and my kids loved all of the bears outside of the building. The restaurant was well laid out, well-lit, and inviting. Wait time: It was a very busy morning and we waited 20-25 minutes to be seated...pretty typical based on other dining experiences at a busy time of day. Menu: Black Bear offers an extensive breakfast menu and we didn't have trouble finding something everyone in our party was happy with. Food quality: I could also give this 5-stars. Far superior over other chains lien IHOP or Village Inn. For the price-point, the quality of the food was what I expected. Portion size: Portions were perfectly adequate, though information on the placemats made it sound like portions would be epically huge. They were not. The placemats also mentioned the size of Black Bear's take-out box budget, as most people have extra food to take home. We took home a little bit, but I had to laugh at how small the take-out boxes were after reading about them. Service: This is where our experience started to decline. First, some of our kids received kids menus that had already been colored in. This was easily corrected, but kind of weird...how did they get from a dirty table to the stack of new menus? After placing our drink orders (mostly orange juice), our sever returned to tell us that he could only fill 4 of the 9 drinks. We opted to let the kids have the orange juice. When he returned with the drinks, he only had 3 of the 4 OJ's and we had to try to convince one of the kids to have apple juice instead. After waiting for our food for almost 20 more minutes, the server brought all but one of the plates. My husband had ordered biscuits and gravy and apparently they were "temporarily" out of biscuits. Would he like a different bread (only toast was offered) or a different meal? Seeing as the rest of us had our meals, it didn't make sense to choose a different meal and wait for it while the rest of us ate, so he chose the toast, which made for a pretty disappointing meal for him. There were no apologies from the server aside from a weak "we weren't expecting to be so busy today". Cost: Higher than your typical breakfast joint, but not outrageous. However, the kids menu conveniently fails to mention that orange juice costs more than double any other drink offered. When we got our bill and saw that a kid's OJ was nearly $4, we about died. Charge that much if you think it's worth it, but please make note of it on the menu! The cashier made an adjustment "just this once", but did so somewhat rudely. We also would have expected a discount on the failed biscuits and gravy meal, but there was none. Final thoughts: We may give Black Bear one more chance, but it won't be on the top of our list of places to return to. Based on reviews from friends, I was expecting a much more enjoyable experience. The negatives for us were primarily service-related, and I realize that this is often location-specific, so next time we try a different location. read more

We have gone to many Black Bears but this was our first visit in Riverton with our good friends It was a horrible experience. They over charged us $ 7.14 and the cashier would not even let me see correct ticket . I called Jennifer and she was not at all helpful She said we were charged $2.99 for a bun. My wife did not want the salad because the food handlers were not wearing gloves so they charged us $2.99 plus $1 for the substitution. I was charged $3 for a tiny bowl of soup even though it was included on the menu Jennifer denied that the food handlers were not wearing gloves but we saw them and they were not. I will file a complaint with the franchisor and the board of Health. I asked for a callback from the owner. Never go back stay away from this place the food isn't that great either. read more

My husband and I went Friday at 3pm. I really wanted some rare prime rib. It was supposed to start at 4pm, but they said I could order it. Being early I was sure I could get a rare cut. I don't know how they cook the meat, but it was more medium well. I was so disappointed. Angel was our waitress and did everything she could to rectify our situation.
