I've been wanting to eat at Black Bear Diner for years! I got what I wanted for my 55th birthday from my besties! I didn't know what to expect, but already knew what I wanted! The staff greeted us very friendly and sat us right away.The restaurant was clean and it seemed pretty lively for a Saturday morning. The crowd was diverse and people were seriously there to have a good time! Champagne bottles were poppin as mimosas seemed to be the popular drink this morning! I wanted comfort food, and that's exactly what I got! Chicken fried steak smothered with their delicious gravy that comes with 3 eggs, I chose hash browns and some fluffy ass biscuits and gravy!!! Yummmmrrs!! To top things off, our server managed to magically find a candle for my blackberry bear claw! Did not have a great time. We came in on Sunday, 9/5, around 1 pm. The wait time is pretty standard on Sunday, especially with brunch, so we waited a little to get seated, but on top of that, we also waited an additional 30 mins after ordering for our food to arrive, which felt extremely long, and we were basically dying of hunger. We did about 1 hr of waiting. But we know it is Sunday, and it can get busy; however, it is pretty rude to not be checked on. Our waiter basically ignored us the entire time; she only came to us when we signaled for her. Our drinks were empty, and she did not check to see if we were okay. On top of that, she seemed annoyed to take our order and seemed very rushed. The minute we said our last thing, or so she thought, she closed her tablet and left. I had to tell her to wait; I was not done, as I still had other questions, like ordering hash brown and white bread. We also want some mimosas, which we had to track her down just so we can ask for them. Food took 30 mins, and my order was wrong. On top of that, not once where we checked on when we had our food until the very end, and only because she checked on another table and she saw me staring her down. I felt ignored and disappointed coming here; I swear I get better service at Denny's and would much rather go there for breakfast. I was looking at Grubhub to see where we should order from and looked at the reviews from my "go to" breakfast place and saw one review after another that said "the food was great, but they left out ________" I had the same experience last time with them. so I passed and went to Black Bear Diner in Tarzana. We had a lot of food and my expectations were low. WRONG!! The food came on time, wrapped perfectly for the 92 degree weather we are having, nothing missing and so delicious! They even made a perfect poached egg and some of the best oatmeal we've ever gotten from a diner. What was really a nice surprise for a veggie omelette was the Shasta Scramble and the fruit cup had a bunch of real nice fruit The iced tea was delicious, fresh brewed and still cold when it got here! There will be a banana cream pie to have later as well!! I called to talk to the manager, to commend the cook and the one that packed up the food, but no one answered the phone LOL. The reason I'm doing this, especially, is because there is so much negativity in our world now, If you had good service, good food make sure you say something. He greeted us upon entering, let us pick our seats, helped us with our ordering, and was perfectly attentive even though he was the only server at the time and was serving around 5 tables. I ordered a lite steak breakfast with a 6oz steak, two eggs, toast, a cup of chili and a single pancake. Everything was great. The fresh made chili was delicious, definitely something to try if you haven't. The pancake was a sweet cream pancake, perfectly light and airy, yet crisp on edges and perfectly lightly sweet. I had never seen this place before or even heard of it until my son brought it up and suggested we go there. He had never been here, either, so it was the first time for both of us. There is plenty of parking shared with other businesses, and immediately upon arriving, I already noticed what a cute place it was. It's your traditional retro/vintage diner type of place but the decor is all related to black bears. It's so adorable and charming, both inside and out. This place has a lot of character. The menus look like newspapers, which I thought were super cute. We were both in the mood for some breakfast and ordered the same thing, the Volcano. It comes with 3 Pancakes, 2 Eggs any style, 2 Sausage Links, and 2 strips of thick-cut bacon. For drinks, we just stuck with water. The food was absolutely delicious and YES, you can definitely go wrong with these simple items! The pancakes were hot and fluffy, the eggs were perfectly fried and the bacon/sausage were nice and crisp. My son always asks for his bacon burnt, and they actually delivered. He was loving every bite. The plate also comes with some butter packets and maple syrup. My son asked our server Carlos if they had any kind of strawberry topping and he brought some out for us. He was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The menu is extremely extensive and we need to come back to try some more items. They have dinner plates, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and much more! They even have a small refrigerated case at the front counter where they sell a small selection of desserts like pies and such. What a cute and comforting place. I came Friday night and I was excited to try their AYCE fish fry Friday. It is breaded pollack fillet with fries, hushpuppies, cole slaw and tartar sauce. Randomly stopped in for breakfast and it did not disappoint. I haven't been here in a while and I feel like the food quality has improved significantly. I ordered their Bigfoot chicken fried steak and also tried their chili, pancakes, and orange juice. The chili is homemade and had a really nice flavor, I was obsessed and ordered more to go. The chicken fried steak and eggs were cooked perfectly. The only thing I wasn't a fan of were the potatoes, they were too greasy. I am not a big fan of pancakes but I tried it and it was really good, crisp edges and light and fluffy interior with a nice hint of sweetness. Came in here on Friday with my brother while being in the SFV and let me tell you, this place was amazing. This location is honestly so much better than Palmdale. Hence I had a bad experience in Palmdale but Tarzana was amazing. Our waitress was so nice and she took our drink order right away. A cute wodden style eatery that would appear to have been here for years. The inside is extremely decorated well with bears everywhere and the seating with that classic leather with soft fabric. It is grandma seating at its best, the best kind! The drinks were great but the food is a catastrophe. I ordered the fried chicken but it was dry and all crunch not bite, with very little meat. A couple bites in, it feels like a chewing sport. The fries were great and the plain pancake was delicious. I'm obsessed with Black Bear Diner. I have never stopped in until recently. Usually I am at the diner just down the street. I am so happy I finally gave Black Bear Diner a shot! The minute you walk in you just get such a welcoming and home-y vibe. The rustic bear/cabin theme is just so cute. The service was outstanding. We went on a Saturday morning and surprisingly it was not that busy. They have a counter you can dine out, two tops, or bigger tables for groups. Super family friendly! They have all your classic breakfast favorites and tons of lunch and dinner options too. I went with a scramble and it was so tasty! Not oily, not dry, it was actually perfect. Coffee wasn't my favorite, but it was hot and they kept filling my mug so I was happy! I like that there was a little message from the founders on the placemat. It seems like they really do care about the quality of the food they are serving and the experience at the restaurant overall. One piece of constructive criticism, I wish their menus weren't paper! Black Bear Diner is a chain restaurant practically in all 50 states. This is a great diner setting with food made to order. We were able to get seating right away. The service is great and the staff is friendly. They have a great selection of dishes to choose from. From traditional patty melts and sandwiches to burgers and fries. And their breakfast dishes are served all day. I chose the 2 eggs and bacon dish for lunch. I preferred my eggs over easy and the bacon was crispy and cooked to perfection. I've been to this location a total of seven times so far, and more than half of those visits have included bad service, which has only gotten worse. My visit today was no exception. My server today had zero enthusiasm whatsoever. He was one of the most inattentive servers I've ever had. He only checked on me once during my entire visit. Meanwhile, he was constantly checking on the table behind me. The food took over half an hour to arrive. The restaurant wasn't too busy, and everyone else seemed to be getting their food before me. The food itself has been good on most of my visits. However, I noticed that one of my pancakes today was hard and stale. The second pancake was fluffy and flavorful, which is how their pancakes usually are. I was going to let my server know about the first pancake, but he never came back to check on me. It's a shame, as I'm a big fan of their sweet cream pancakes. I've also tried their chicken tenders and their house-made Hot Italian Patty Sausage on previous visits. The chicken tenders were well-seasoned, with a golden-brown exterior and tender meat inside. I enjoyed them with the habanero sauce. The sausage delivers a satisfying combination of heat, texture, and breakfast indulgence. I always like to kick it up a notch by pairing it with the habanero sauce as well. The ambiance is cozy with rustic charm. You'll notice warm wooden furnishings, booth and table seating, and inviting cabin-like decor featuring bear-themed accents. Overall, this restaurant has a ton of potential. The food is great (for the most part), the portions are generous, and the ambiance is nice. We weren't sure, did they run out like he said or did they just didn't have any prepared. We didn't quite get what he meant but it leaned towards like, nope no more. Anyways, rant over. We all ordered but with the wait time, we ordered some of the garlic bread to munch on. It was ok, nothing major just white bread with a little garlic spread and cheese sprinkled and toasted. When the meal came out, it was a pretty decent size portion. 2 piece of pollack, 3 hush puppies , a side of coleslaw and with fries or onions rings. Served with a slice of lemon and tartar sauce. One of us had fries and they wanted some malt vinegar. A bottle was brought out but it barely had much left. We asked for another bottle but when the waiter came back, he said there was none. So basically none in the whole restaurant I guess. Fish wise, it looked quite deep fried. Hot to start which it clearly just came out of the fryer. It was crunchy on the outside but still nice inside. Two decent size piece. Coleslaw was quite nice, hush puppies were ok. Also the onion rings were good. As it's unlimited, after the main potion comes out each additional order is one piece. For the price of the meal at 19.99 for unlimited fried fish, it was affordable. Fish wise, it was good just a little over done with the fried batter. Service was nice with our waiter. I can say I've tried it now after seeing an add for it. Wow -- I just discovered this place while getting a brake job done across the street, and I'm so glad I did. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted immediately and shown to a super comfortable cabin-style booth. The whole restaurant feels like you stepped into a cozy mountain lodge in Big Bear -- except it's right here in LA. They even have an old-school jukebox, everything is clean, and the warm cabin décor gives it a relaxed, welcoming vibe. The carpets honestly reminded me of a classic mountain hotel. The food was phenomenal and unbelievably fast. About five minutes after ordering, my California omelette arrived with bacon, fresh fruit, and a pancake that was honestly crazy good. You can tell they run a tight kitchen. The fresh-squeezed orange juice from their Zummo machine was excellent -- definitely worth ordering. The bill was $50 for all you see in the photo - up there for a diner, but it's a really great diner. I like clean, quick, and quality service; this place checks all the boxes. This restaurant used to be our favorite diner whenever we took a trip up north. After our last experience, looks like we'll have to find another diner. We arrived around 10:40AM, there were only about 6-8 tables with customers. I always order the Country Fried Steak here, so I ordered their Bigger size portion which is $1 more than the 5 oz. Version. When I ordered it, the waitress immediately said they were "out" of the bigger size and I could only get the smaller portion. When I asked about the size difference she explained that the bigger one is 10 oz and the smaller one was 5 oz. (If this is the case, couldn't she have just put in the bigger order and given me TWO 5 oz portions for the price of the bigger portion?). When she noticed my hesitation, she said she would ask about it and let me know. Did she? Nope. She just dropped off the 5 oz. One without any further mention of what we had discussed earlier. Not only was that a bit off-putting, our server seriously seemed pissed off from the moment she sat us down. We constantly felt like we were bothering her and she was doing us a favor by waiting on our table. She also never came by our table to check on us or ask for refills. I had to get up from the table and flag her down myself. The ONLY exception to her surly and sour service was when she dropped off the check. For the FIRST TIME EVER, she flashed us a fake smile and made some kind of dumb joke. Ummm...I'm sorry Bonnie, you don't get to treat us like we're bothering you by patronizing your restaurant our entire meal and then redeem yourself with one fake smile and a dumb joke. Now let's get to the food. My steak was alright, about what was expected. The potatoes though? Terrible. Both my wife and I got the hash browns. Both of us were served stale hashbrowns with no crisp whatsoever. Some of the potato bits in the hash brown was also undercooked. I think it's a grave sin for a breakfast place to mess up potatoes. I mean, it's a staple. It should be automatically GOOD. This was NOT the case here. Now THIS is a diner! The food, fantastic. The ambience, true to the bone and the service was friendly! I ordered The Grizz, their biggest breakfast on the menu so I could try most everything. The pancakes, divine! The bacon was thick and crispy, I love it and I'm not a fan of bacon. Even the sausages were really good. The poached egg were cooked just right for me. Overall I was very happy and satisfied and not disgustingly full like most diners make me feel after. The atmosphere made me feel like I'm somewhere in the back country in Montana or somewhere remote, like back in time. It was a good experience. I'll definitely be back here to try their pot roast any time of the day I feel like it because that's how their menu works, served all day. Way better than Denny's or iHop! The one guy working front of house was quickly swamped and the result was that everyone got inferior service. The food was plentiful, well prepared and hot. But the service went from good to completely inadequate. I know that I wasn't the only one who noticed. I mean, where can you go and have breakfast where it was reasonable. I had been to one before when I lived in Las Vegas, but I can say we will be back I liked it. The Black Bear Diner on Ventura blvd in my original home town of Tarzana looked at first to me to be a novelty store as I passed it driving on my way out of town. Outside I saw two large Black Bear figures and the restaurant looked like it was made in the mountains with wood and stone, in other words Black Bear country. Think Mini Disneyland with hopefully better food. But one morning I was hungry , breakfast hungry so I decided to give it a try without an E ticket .The Black Bear Diner was established in the small city town up North called Mt Shasta City in 1995 by Bruce Dean and Laurie and Bob Manley. They are still involved with the restaurant today . They now are serving 143 communities in 14 states and known as Bob Papa Bear and Dean Sugar Bear their office is known in Mt Shasta location as booth # 1 Greeted at the door we are led to a comfortable booth by the outside window. For breakfast being hungry I ordered two eggs over easy with crisp hash browns home made round mild Italian delicious juicy sausages . One fluffy pancake fresh orange juice and of course coffee. The order took a little longer than I thought it should, but found out that they cook to order. The server was very attentive and checked in on us frequently . The place including the bathroom was immaculate. Besides a spread sheet at the table listing the restaurants history it also listed the places 6 Credos which I found to be true. 1 greeted at the door 2 Server was attentive to our needs 3 since breakfast is made to order it will take a little more time, but they have a old fashioned juke box playing some good old songs from the past that kept me entertained. 4 they serve ample food with large platters which brings into play credo number 5 they gladly tell you to take the left overs home and enjoy it for another meal at home. Finally number 6 They encourage customers to write to them holding them accountable for all 6 credo's. That's delightfully bold and this Black Bear Diner is indeed a welcomed addition to our little community here in Tarzana . It is not just a novelty location but a wonderful place to have breakfast and you can if you wish buy a toy bear. Overall delightful experience. read more

Fantastic Ambiance. Makes u feel like you are in a cabin in mountains. Country music playing, tables are wooden, everything has a black bear logo on it: hot sauces, coffee mugs, etc. Loved the coffee mugs. Service was excellent. Steak was VERY salty and sour. Hash brown was dry and cold. Over easy eggs were cooked to perfection. Loved it. read more

Went to have Breakfast with my Aunt & Uncle. The guy who served us was great, food was delicious and the wait time wasn't so long. The atmosphere was also very welcoming. I got the Grizz, and while the food was good, my only complaint is that the Pancakes felt a little undercooked, will get them Well Done next time. read more
