For you traveling from big cities or our coast high dollar areas, you will be impressed with the size and quality of their food. Locals should gasp at the prices! At around $3 more per plate for your breakfast choice, you'll need to be very impressed with their kitschy decor and self promotion. Everything you touch, including bottles of condiments has the Black Bear name on it and I'm sure it costs more to have three varieties of hot sauce as well as ketchup and steak sauce made specially for you instead of buying the usual brand names. The side effect of this is you don't know what the hell they'll taste like. You locals will want to stay with locals! read more

Our first time here in turlock black bear diner.. i had the prime rib. 14 oz . Wow i was very very displeased. 75 percent of the cut was fat . Could not belive they sent this out .otherwise the other four members enjoyed thier meals . Go to Farmers Den, Hot Rod or Aj's Cafe. Went in at 9am, waited until 10am to get the eggs Benedict and when they came out they weren't poached, they were sunnyside up. No biggie, until I cut into it and noticed they were raw. Table of 6, the first three plates came out 30mins before mine, and the next two at random intervals. It takes all of 3-4 minutes to make eggs. I dont know why I waited 45mins for raw eggs. The server said she was sorry, and the manager was going to comp my meal. I sent back the food, I'm not going to eat raw eggs, or wait even longer for food that should have been out an hour before. The manager seemed unapologetic, just kept repeating 'I'm sorry about that' with no real solution. read more

Love Love Love us some Black Bear Diner!!! We had been waiting and stalking for their opening and we were finally able to get there on the third day. We got there in the afternoon, but decided to make it a late brunch meal and eat breakfast. As soon as we both noticed that they had eggs Benedict on the menu, we knew that's what we had to try, because we had to see if it would bring us back home to our favorite place in New Orleans. First off, let me tell y'all, the service that we received from everyone at BBD was impressive and impeccable!! With me being in a wheelchair, I know that I can be a little more difficult than most customers, since I can't be placed in a booth, but the staff were quick to remove the chairs from our table, and to accommodate my needs, and I was/am so very thankful for that!! I rarely go into a restaurant that does this for me, so this is why the majority of the time, we usually just do takeout. But now I feel comfortable to go any time to BBD and enjoy a meal. Now back to the food!! LOL. The eggs Benedict with hash browns arrived in front of me and WHOA! Can I just say that, that plate was HUGE, but looked amazing. I couldn't wait to dive into it. Was it as good as my favorite place in New Orleans? Not quite, but damn, it sure gave it a real run for its money lol! I savored every bite of those eggs!! The hash browns were perfect! Crispy, yet soft. The only down side...I couldn't eat it all, but I gladly took the remainder home in a little box and ate it for dinner! Oh and did I mention that they have sweet tea?! Omg! Love their sweet tea! Not too sweet, just right! And for those people that don't want sweet tea, they also have cruel tea...aka...unsweetened tea. We have been back to BBD a couple times since the first time and we have enjoyed every meal and every server and staff member that we have been with while there. I wont make this mistake again. We were seated at a table that we had 2 foot between us and the table. When we asked the hostess if we could change booths she offered us a table even though there were plenty open booths. My husband had the prime rib breakfast special and it was ordered medium rare and came out well done. The sourdough toast was only half toasted and cold by the time it reached our table. Both of our plates had potatoes and neither of us could eat them due to mine being cold almost as if they went from the refrigerator to my plate and my husbands were under cooked and cold as well. Yikes. I love eating here and have been. After tonight not anymore! Went last night around 5 pm to have my favorite meal. The veggie hash. 2 hour later. I started feeling a bit ill. We have breakfast there every Saturday. We live in Modesto and will not go there. We always ask for the same server, Tanner, he is the nicest young man and always make sure we have what we want. When he sees us sit down, he knows what we like to drink and brings it to us right away. The food is good, and restaurant is clean. All staff seem very nice, but Tanner is our go to guy. read more

I'm very happy to say that this restaurant is a home run! I've been many times and loved all but one dish, the fried chicken, there was almost no crust so bland. Other then that, the food is always quick, tasty, hot and plentiful. Staff is always friendly and prompt. Great place to hang with friends because they don't rush you. I loved their enormous , crispy fresh salads. The taco is amazing, the Cobb and crispy chicken both very good. Never dissappointed. read more

Sadly I believe I gave a good review on the diner before, they were good, friendly and clean. The owners changed and it is disappointing. Garbage outside on the brick work and in the front, the front windows are horrible since it's the first thing you see, the service is friendly but slow and the food tastes like it could be left overs. Our cornbread muffin was so hard it needed a sharp knife to cut. I choose the special prime rib it was old (I know this is a coffee shop but I have had it before and was fresh and good.). I hope the new owners pick up the pace. read more

My wife and I went to this Turlock Black Bear for breakfast this morning. First time we have been at this location. The food was pretty good. I really don't comment on food everybody has their personal taste. The restaurant was clean and the service was outstanding! Ruben was wonderful very kind and always checked in on us. One of the friendliest places you'll ever go to eat. When you walk in it is reminiscent of a lodge with the wood beams and black bears, hence the name. The serving are generous and you won't leave hungry. Chicken fried steak was outstanding and the country potatoes were perfect. A large array of desserts sure to please everyone. read more

The food was great. The Prime rib was tender, juicy and tasty. But the what made the meal was the staff. All of them very attentive and pleasant. Our first visit here. This location has only been open a few weeks, we expected to have a long wait and for it to be chaotic. We waited only a few minutes. They are moving people along nicely. No feeling or apperance of chaos. Our server Brittnie was excellent. Very personable and professional. We only have 2 complaints. The back of the seat is to far from table. The music is to loud. Went here today and wondered why it wasn't crowded at lunch time but we knew why when we left. Pro's... The decor is adorable with bears and train tracks outside. We were seated by a friendly server and given menus. Our drinks came quickly. My husband liked the biscuits and gravy. Cons... The menu was very pricy. There wasn't much under $17 including breakfasts. I ordered a a patty melt (one of the less expensive items) "medium" but it had zero pink inside. It didn't taste bad but the bread was over toasted and I pulled out one slice of onion that was not even sliced, it was the outer part and in there by mistake maybe. My husbands hash browns were as dark as they could be without being black and he said they tasted like they were cooked in old grease. Everything was over done except my French Fries but they were over salted. We both agreed we could have cooked better than this at home. read more

The bear claw french toast is a great treat (definitely not healthy!), hash browns were a little too mushy for my liking as I prefer them to be crispy on top. While I think the menu could use some variety, I was glad to see Felicia, a wonderful server with a great sense of humor, was back. After being a frequent dinner guest, I had been to this diner only once in the last two years. Excellent service and surprisingly good food. Our server Kimberly was awesome!! Allot of training going on so you'll see a few more employees then a normal Black Bear diner, I had doubts of eating here because I compared them to Huckleberry's and Denny's to name a a few local places and I refuse to eat there. Ordered prime rib, medium rare, but it was way over cooked because they Put it on a flat top Grill after they slice it. Server said that's how the chef makes it there. I sent mine back but my husband was embarrassed to do so so he ate his. The manager cooked mine, rather sliced mine, and put it on the plate and it was perfect. My husband's prime rib was horrible. I had him try mine and he said a huge difference. His was dry and hard. If you decide to order prime rib for $17.99, make sure you ask them to slice it and not brown it afterwards. If you do that then I would recommend it. read more
