Hubby and I enjoyed a pleasant evening with dinner at Black Bear Diner. I had salmon with pesto on top. It arrived on a layer on a fresh cooked spinach with fresh veggies and a baked potato. I wished they had rice as the side dish choice for the fish entree. Hubby had chicken fried steak. He loved the white gravy over the mashed potatoes. Both items came with soup or salad. The salad is a hefty fresh mixed green with carrots, red cabbage, and cherry tomatoes. Nicholas was an excellent waiter. He was attentive and courteous. His service was remarkable. My wife and I have been to the turlock location at least four times now. We love it! The hostess is always very quick and accomidating. We have three small children. The food is plentiful like all other Black Bears we have been to. But this one has an atmosphere unlike any of the others. Visited the new BBD in Turlock on Sunday afternoon. Was greeted with a warm smile and greeting upon entering the establishment. The restaurant offered a very bright and open environment. While the restaurant was steady with business, I was pleased with the promptness of being seated. Our server could not have extended any better service from beginning to end. I do believe her name was Deanna. A BIG SHOUT OUT for her attention to details and exemplary service. Of course the food was quite tasty as well. Was there with my daughter and her family. We stopped in around 4 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. We were both surprised as to the excellent job that had been done on the remodeling of the building . This place has an open & inviting look. We especially pleased at the warm welcoming we received from various employees. Sandie had salmon & I had the chicken fried steak. We both throughly enjoyed our meals. If you have the chicken fried steak, you want to be hungry as there is a large portion. Our waiter was pleasant & efficient. He was present when needed & was friendly. Took the family to this location this past Monday. We were seated rather quickly, drinks came quick and that's where it started to get slower. When we ordered our food the wait was a little longer than anticipated. Normally servers will bring out the kids orders first but not here. My wife was served first, then me and then the kids. We waited for the kids meals to arrive before starting to eat and as you might expect, it got cold during the wait gap. Nevertheless we didn't complain or fuss, we just went about our way. The food was good though a bit pricier than other comparable locations. A family of 5 with 3 kids 11 and under shouldn't run over $100 for breakfast. Huckleberrys runs about $85, iHop about the same. The $4 kids drinks with no refills was a surprise. Now cost and wait times aside, the one thing that would affect my return is the amount of flies at this location. More than half of our time here was spent shooing away flies from our table. It distracted the kids too much and it was a nuisance to my wife & I. Other places have fans at the entrance or small separate entrance that keeps these kinds of things from happening. Cool Hands Luke never had this issue when they occupied the same space. 3 stars because of the flies! Yes, I can't handle flies with my indoor dining. read more

We've been going to breakfast here when my husband and I have a day off together. The service has been amazing! We try and get the same section because we have a server who is amazing! He will have 10 tables and doesn't miss a beat! He gets everyone their refills and food and manages to have excellent customer service and is always so happy, polite and helpful! He's more concerned with pleasing customers who prefer not to wear a mask for more business when the safety of his employees and other customers should be his #1 priority. asked for the open face turkey sandwich with yellow turkey gravy. A young man delivered it with beef gravy, told him the mistake and he took it back, then brought it back out with sausage gravy. Told him it was wrong and that I asked for yellow turkey gravy to which he now stated they don't have it. So I canceled my order. Waiter shows up, I explain and he proceeds to tell me they do have the turkey gravy. Count our losses and as we pay the bill the wife points out some cream pies and the kid behind the counter has NO idea what pie is what. Second hostess shows up and says banana cream and coconut cream. wife orders a banana cream to eat on the way home To Fresno. Half way home she starts to eat the banana pie only to find out it was coconut. No manager available, all staff looked to be in early 20's. Worst experience ever. read more

Black Bear is now the new home of our business referral group, BNI - Turlock Business Partners. They welcome us early on Thursday mornings and the food is phenomenal! The room is set up and ready for our group of approximately 35 people. A variety of scrambled eggs, side meat, french toast, fruit, juice, coffee etc. Scott (Manager) and his staff are on top of their game! Ample parking, the restaurant and restrooms are very clean, welcoming staff and the kitchen staff should get a huge kudos. Their separate meeting room is perfect for a business meeting. I would normally give this location a 5 star review but lately it has been not. You could say my family are regulars there, table 15. The staff members are always friendly and respectful. The place is always clean and the food good. If an order is wrong they fix it. But lately things have changed. The staff are short staffed which has caused longer wait times to be seated, get drink and food orders, refills on drinks, tables to be cleaned and waiting to pay the check. Most of the time there's only one to two waiters or waitress. And they are running around like chickens with their heads cut off! With only 1-2 of them it's impossible for them to do their job properly. I my self was a business owner and a waitress and I know that is your job to do all of that stuff but to do it like that! The owner needs to seriously redo stuff there or they will not only lose customers but good hard working employees. read more

We decided to go to Black Bear last night because I was craving a turkey dinner. The last time I was there the turkey dinner wasn't as good as it usually is, but decided to give it a try again. I was so disappointed it was actually worse than the last time! They used to serve an amazing carved piece of turkey that always left you wanting more when you were done. What I got last night tasted like watered down cheap turkey lunch meat smothered in gravy. I understand that turkey is difficult to get right now and is expensive but please either take it off your menu temporarily until you can get the right turkey, or buy the right turkey and charge more. I don't mind paying more for good quality. The best part of the meal was the salad. Wouldn't give 2 cents for the rest of it. The only reason for the 2 stars is because our waiter was amazing! read more

I tend to stay far away from Chain restaurants, however I must say, Black Bear Diner in Danville does an excellent job serving hot food!
