(4+ stars if you stick to sushi, 3.5 otherwise) I was surprised and disappointed when Chinese Kitchen abruptly closed as it was one of Greensboro's better Chinese takeout spots. Black Ginger opened quickly in its stead late last month and while the concept is different, it is a worthy inheritor of this location. For the unfamiliar, Black Ginger isn't visible from Dolley Madison Road proper. It instead may be accessed via Tomahawk, Mapleleaf, or Milner Drives. For those who know the spot from its Chinese Kitchen days, the interior has been pleasantly refreshed. New booths and better lighting make for a clean, bright, and contemporary space. Black Ginger's menu skews Japanese. Bento boxes, miso, and an impressively large sushi menu (including deep fried rolls) are among the offerings. However, there are also Thai curries and a few Chinese standards (Kung Pao and orange chickens and Mongolian beef). Vegetarians won't be put out trying to eat here, either. For our first visit, my wife and I went with a chicken bento box and a steak house fried rice respectively and split a tornado roll. The tornado roll, a fried sushi concoction featuring spicy tuna, cream cheese, pineapples, jalapenos, and a wasabi cream sauce, was easily the highlight of the meal. It was crispy, the flavors balanced nicely (my wife, who hates wasabi, found no complaint with the sauce), and there was plenty of it to go around. Sushi definitely seems to be Black Ginger's strength, and their other rolls merit future investigation. The rest of the food was more uneven. The bento box included a nice salad with a ginger dressing that featured hints of citrus. Accompanying gyoza (fried unless you request otherwise) and cucumber roll were fine, but the chicken was a bit rubbery. The steak fried rice offered a welcome medley of vegetables (corn, peas, carrots, and onions) and made for perfectly satisfying comfort food though I would hesitate to call it exemplary. What is exemplary is Black Ginger's service. My wife and I were greeted warmly upon entry, our server capably answered questions and brought food out with a smile, and staff checked on us throughout our meal to ensure that we were enjoying everything. For the quality and quantity offered, Black Ginger's pricing represents a good value. Bento boxes (protein, vegetables, sushi, gyoza, salad, and rice) range from $9 to $12 depending on the protein, and many entrees are priced about the same. A lot of the fried and specialty sushi rolls go for around $12, including the tornado. Given how recently the restaurant opened, Black Ginger is off to a good start. Some dishes are stronger than others, but stellar service and a bountiful sushi menu make it worth trying. Now if only they'll add cold sesame noodles. read more

I stopped by Black Ginger for a late lunch after looking up places to get sushi nearby. Between our table we had steamed dumplings, 2 sushi rolls, and a teriyaki stir fry plate. My shrimp tempura roll was good, but not great. The stir fry plate had an odd aftertaste. And the other sushi roll which was a 'specialty roll' was smaller than mine. While the staff were nice and attentive (we were also the only ones there), I don't think I'll go back. The quality of the food didn't match the high price tags. read more

I've only had a few things other than sushi here, but I've had a ton of their specialty rolls. They are all fresh and delicious! The service is always fast and friendly. The dining room has been clean for every visit, and the atmosphere is nice and comfortable. Our go to date spot- it's never busy and the food is always good. We have tried all of their specialty rolls on the menu and haven't had one that we really disliked. The menu does have the most popular Asian dishes, so if sushi isn't for you, don't worry they have other optiond. The staff is always friendly and tries hard to make sure you are satisfied. I also like how clean the restaurant is. The bathroom has never been dirty during my visits. I would really recommend this place to anyone. read more

We both liked what we recvd, but I found her s n t a little strange for sushi. My disappointment was the staff and their lack of knowledge. Did not know what "dry" sake was or even meant. I have become a huge fan of sushi lately so I was craving this for my birthday. I wanted to go somewhere new and this is the place I chose. I am so glad I did because it was so great. Our waitress was so sweet and patient with us, and she answered all of our questions with enthusiasm. I had been looking forward to coming here for month and finally got the opportunity. It was lunch time and a little later so we basically had the place to ourselves. It is not at all what I expected inside or location wise. The inside reminds me of this fried seafood place I went to as a kid. Same set up. Anyways, get there and get seated and order a drink while I wait. I was very conflicted on what to order because they had "dry ramen" and I was very curious about this but I knew I wasn't going to eat much so it would be wasting money. I ended up getting lunch sushi with spicy crab and while I was told it came with cucumber and avocado, it didn't so I asked for cucumber and laid it on top of it. It was still pretty dang good but I wish I would have gotten a different second roll. I looked at the drink menu for a while and they have sake flights! That temptation was real. The food here is aight. I ordered the deep fried monster roll. My only gripe is, the sushi rice was really mushy. I'm used to soft yet kinda firm rice. The flavors were aight, but then again I keep thinking I'm going to order a sushi roll that measures up to my beloved Godzilla roll in the QC. The gyoza was good. This is typically fried, but I asked for steamed. I enjoyed that. I should have just ordered that and some soup or noodle dish. Our server was pretty nice and was patient, answering a million questions my mother and I had before, during and after we ordered. I really don't understand the hype about this place. My sister and I decided to grab lunch here since it was considered one of the newer hot spots. New maybe, definitely not hot. We looked over the entire menu, but both of us wanted sushi. I kept seeing "cheese" as an ingredient in many, if not most of the sushi rolls. I assumed cream cheese but asked the waiter just in case. I can't imagine actual cheese in a sushi roll. It was, in fact, and thankfully, cream cheese. Since I do not like cream cheese in my sushi, I asked the waiter what he recommended sushi wise without it. He commented about how he loved cream cheese in his sushi and then walked away. I guess he couldn't give me a recommendation. (?) Anyway, we ordered the tarantula roll and the Over the Moon roll, with an appetizer of crab Rangoon. First off, the crab Rangoon was amazing. Not too cream cheesy, very flavorful of crab, and the wontons wrapper was yummy. I only suggest putting them on a paper towel before serving because I literally had grease dripping off my fingers. Both sushi rolls were decent. But that's it. Not awesome, not great, not bad either. Acceptable. I always like to try new sushi places and every single time I'm disappointed. The Black Ginger evolved from the old Chinese Kitchen which survives in the same exact location, sharing the same misleading address. The restaurant is NOT exactly on Dolly Madison Rd or West Friendly Avenue but is, instead, in the Guilford Village Shopping Center straight down Milner Drive from Friendly into the Guilford Village Shopping Center. See my map. As one can easily see the new owners' focus on the Sushi menu while including other Asian cuisine including Japanese and That and Chinese. I tried the Inagi (eel) Nigiri-style (over rice), the pork dumplings GYOZA which were fried instead of steamed (I should have specified steamed as the fried ones were a bit dry but tasty.) I tried the Mongolian beef with "fried rice" which was tasty while a little on the sweet side, that came along side of some cold steamed broccoli. Traditionally, Mongolian beef is served over deep-fried saifun or cellophane noodles. The rice was cooked perfectly and has a fried flavor but was plain without adornments. I hope, with the excessive number of items on the menu, Black Ginger is successful. There was not a big crowd at lunch but, hey, it was Thursday and they just opened. The menu is HUGE so there is much to try on return visits. Extensive sushi offerings that all sound amazing. I can't wait to try them all! This morning restaurant used to be amazing. I know the pandemic has made things tough, but not only did prices go up, quality and quantity went down. The edamame went from $4.99; the wine didn't go up in price, jt the last few times I have been there the first glass was sour; the glass in the photo was $8.00 for Firesteed Pinot Noir, and this sushi roll was 13.95 and is now 15 or 16 - but looks like a normal sushi roll of about $7 - not the specialty roll it is proclaimed to be. The staff are unprofessional - the sushi chefs, servers and managers. As a customer, the sushi rice is the base for all rolls. I thought the sushi rice on the rolls was dry (as i worked in a popular sushi spot in tampa for 2 years. We got a lot of customers and stayed busy) so I pointed it out to the server to note to the chef. The chefs had a loud outburst and said "the sushi rice is fine!" The manager said the same in the dining room loud enough for me to heard. It was very passive aggresive but no one server or manager came to address me about it. Holy Shrinkflation! We ordered 3 rolls with our take out today, and they were COMICALLY TINY! Like the center of the sushi was the size of a quarter! We've been eating here for years and thought of their sushi as one of the best, but NO LONGER! Two rolls are usually enough for an average person right? Ordered a $12.50 binto box (asked for tempura shrimp but received shrimp & veggies in a brown sauce, so I just accepted it quietly rather than make a fuss). It came with "California roll" ... which was the volume of 3 sugar cubes (one bite). The $2.50 "sweet tea" which consisted of ice, sugar water and the slightest hint of a tan color (perhaps tea?). I ordered one of the shrimp bento boxes, my daughter ordered on of the bowls. The box consists of fried tempura shrimp with a gaggle of fried tempura vegetables. if you are not a vegy type person you will still like these veggies. The mushroom soup is a light chicken broth with some green onion and mushrooms. Delicious in its simplicity. The irony was the only things I didn't love, but still enjoyed was the shrimp and sushi roll. Both were good but not great. The shrimp was a little too greasy and the sushi was cold in some spots warm in others. One happy surprise is you also get a pork pot sticker which was very good. He told me to just order an entree curry if I wanted rice even though I had already made an order and wanted a simple side of rice.
