Very disappointed. My wife and I first dined here about seven years ago. We were celebrating her birthday. I had the dry aged Cowboy Ribeye and my wife had a salad with steak bits. This was the best steak that I'd ever had in my life! I could literally cut it with my fork! Fast forward to today, also celebrating my wife's birthday, and what a let down. I've had much better steaks at Texas Roadhouse than the one I had today. There was no cutting this ribeye with a fork and for $75 dollars I would've been much happier at Texas Roadhouse. Let me start with the good: Steaks were perfectly seasoned and cooked, did not need any steak sauce, salt or anything, just plain good. The not-so-good: It was Friday evening, after Thanksgiving (2012), they were about half-capacity and so not what I would think was overly busy. - Service was SLOW, INACCURATE, AND APATHETIC - Took our order 30 minutes after seating. - We ordered appetizers. Appetizers never came - never delivered at all. - Ordered a bottle of wine. Waited 30 minutes for that to arrive. (Had to ask for it multiple times) - Entrees arrived about 20 minutes after the wine. We asked about the appetizers, they were like "Meh. Didn't put them in, too bad." - Baked potatoes were woefully undercooked. My date's potato was literally cold in the middle. - Waiter acted like we should be eternally grateful because he didn't charge us for the appetizers he never delivered. Serious! I was dumbfounded. We arrived at 6:20pm. It was after 9pm when we walked out the door - still hungry. We ended up stopping somewhere else to get a snack/dessert. The worst was thing was watching other customers arrive after us, got drinks and appetizers before we had our wine, were done with their entrees and eating dessert/paying/leaving as we were getting our entrees. But the steaks are really good, that's why they get a second star. No, screw that, they don't get a second star. My husband and I live in Indian Hills and are very picky about our steaks. We found Black Hat several years ago and have yet to find a place with better filet mignon (we've tried quite a few all over the Denver and mountain area). They always cook to perfection and the phrase "melt in your mouth" l now understand. The food is amazing and always keeps us coming back for more. Matt is such a wonderful server. LOVE the food here - I've never had a more consistently cooked fresh steak than I have at this little local gem. I usually get the 8oz sirloin and my hubby the 12oz. The sides are a nice choice although my favorite is the creamed spinach, baked potato, or chorizo gravy mashed potatoes. We were passing through town and chose this place for a nice dinner. The place is clean, and service was quick. Our waitress was really nice and welcoming. I ordered a steak dinner and hubby ordered prime rib. We also both got salads (cesar and wedge) My steak wasn't cooked how I asked, but it was still tasty. The decor was simple and the atmosphere was charming. One thing I noticed was that there was a certain spice in almost all their foods. It was in the Cesar dressing and the wedge salad dressing and also in the bacon flavor - kind of like a smoked flavor... I did not care for it but my husband loved it, so I do appreciate their attempts to put their own spin on common foods. Because when it works (as it did for hubby) it really works. Pros -Service was good -Prices were affordable (check about the $35 per person special) for quality of food you get -Seating and parking were fairly easy -Never heard of or had Chorizo mashed potatoes - good, but wish they had a more prominent Chorizo flavor in the gravy. Cons -Wedge Salad - just okay - I am not taking major points off for a damn salad, but compared to other steakhouses, was just average -Beer selection was not good - domestics and standard imports. Typically steakhouses are not huge "beer places" but worth mentioning -Steak quality was okay - aged rubs/flavors were good, but not the BEST quality steak I have had. -Baked potato needed more seasoning If you are living or staying in Evergreen and don't want to drive to down to Denver, Black Hat Cattle is a perfectly adequate option. After 2 return trips after my first visit, I have to note that either they have significantly improved or were just having an off night during my first visit. In both of my last 2 visits, I ordered the rib eye and both times it was excellent. The sides were good, especially the potato dishes. The wine selection has been expanded to include some good, moderately priced reds. Service was friendly. We came for my son's 21st birthday and he was promptly greeted by the hostess with a Happy Birthday! The ambiance was very mountain like and log cabin ish. Don't let the outside fool you! I had the steak and tips. The birthday boy had the surf and turf his dad had the cowboy and my daughter had a salmon dish We have absolutely no complaints. The hot fresh bread when it first came out is amazing and perfectly warm. As a side we all had the vegetable medley at the suggestion of our server. So worth it! Spinach, carrots, purple cabbage and more, the seasoning was incredible! The absolute only thing that could have made this better is if they served liquor. That would have given it 5 stars. Okay- here goes: I live in the community above Black Hat and have given the place five tries simply due to location convenience. The first time we went was for my birthday dinner and ordered the steak & lobster. I ordered medium rare- the steak came out medium (close to medium well) and the lobster was rubber. AND I am not a big picky person- so for me to write this review means- yep: this place sucks. BTW: The final ticket was $140- in no way was it worth it whatsoever. The second time, I go with a girlfriend for happy hour and Cassie the bartender was fabulous- therefore I resolve it can be a happy hour stop, not necessarily high priced dinner spot. Remember- I live 3 minutes away so I can be reasonable. The third, fourth and fifth time all sucked. The third time, the new bartender was being trained (where's Cassie??) and apparently the kitchen cook was too because she had no idea what the happy hour Slider menu consisted of, took a guess and wrong-o. I was told it was grilled chicken with sweet potato fries. Nope. It was pulled bbq pork and regular fries. I don't want to get into my eating habits, but the grilled chicken and sweet potato fries fit into the Paleo (sorta) eating. So, back to not being super picky, I eat it. And the fries weren't even cooked- they looked as though they came off of another plate....from like three hours prior. Back to not eating at Black Hat- not even the happy hour menu, and resolve "how bad can they screw up a dirty martini?" Remember, I live 3 minutes away and the the place is convenient. The fourth and fifth time just sucked. The service is horrible!!! and the martinis aren't martinis. So, I talked to the owner. I explained everything I just said on here (in summary and without the sarcasm) and he said "okay." Smiled and said "okay." I looked at him waiting for something more. Nope. She was a horrible waitress anyways...and please, don't argue with customers, especially when you know you are wrong and just trying to BS your way out of it. My Dad is hard of hearing so I called ahead and reserved the little private room they have in the front. It was *perfect*. Really 4.5 stars. Food, service, location are outstanding. 4 of us for dinner. Started by splitting a couple of cesar salads. A little heavy on the dressing but flavor was great and we ate every single bite. They baked fresh rolls, that were hot and yummy, but a little plain. Steaks were great. Two of us had the bone in ribeye, the cowboy drumstick. At $40 it's not cheap, but wow, is it good. Cooked perfectly, tender and juicy. Came with a baked potato, hot and yummy, and veggies, cooked well. We also had the elk medallions. Really interesting, tasty, and again, cooked perfectly. Finally had the small filet. Crispy on the outside, cooked perfect on the inside. This is what you expect from a good steakhouse. Service was very good and attentive. If you're going to close for the holiday week, it's very customer friendly to have updated hours on your website, your door, and your phone recording. We called, got the message about no phone reservations, and decided to go anyway because it was a halfway point. They weren't open. The half of our party that made it said the doors were locked, hours were listed on the door staying they were open until ten... I get that businesses can change hours during holiday weeks, but what's the point of having all these forms of communication if you aren't going to use any of them? I sincerely hope there wasn't an emergency for the staff, and if so I'll retract my review, but at times the customer experience starts before for is set in the restaurant. I have to say I was pretty disappointed with this place. For the price you would expect excellence, but it was mediocre at best. My boyfriend and I went here this past Friday evening for an early Valentine's dinner since I had a class to go to on Valentine's day. Our reservation was for 6pm. Service- The service was good, but the server was just "okay". She was attentive, but not very friendly. With the amount of money these folks make off one table, again you'd expect excellence all around. It almost felt like we were burdening her whenever she came over to ask how things were. Food - Rolls came out prior to the meal and those were about the only thing that came out hot! The butter they served with the rolls literally looked like they just took a stick of butter out of a package, cut off a quarter piece, sprinkled it with seasoned salt and put it on a little serving dish. They could have put in a little bit of effort here. We ordered a scallop appetizer and while it tasted okay, it was lukewarm at best when it arrived. I ordered the 6oz filet with salmon and a 3 shrimp skewer. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium and it came out medium rare. I'm not one for sending anything back to the cook so I dealt with it. The filet tasted "okay", but pretty comparative to a steak from Lone Star Steakhouse. My sides were sweet potato fries and creamed spinach. The spinach and fries again were lukewarm at best, but did taste okay. The salmon was okay, but definitely could have used a little more seasoning or something. The shrimp skewer was probably the best thing on the plate. My boyfriend had a cowboy drumstick steak, basically a steak with a bone for a handle I guess was the idea. He ordered mashed potatoes and the creamed spinach as well. His steak was also cooked more of a medium rare than medium. The potatoes and spinach were just as lukewarm as mine were. We ventured on to try desert; creme brulee with "fresh" berries. These berries were anything but fresh, the whole tiny 8 of them that we received. They looked like thawed out blueberries in a berry type of sauce. Now they didn't taste horrible, but when it says "fresh berries" I'm thinking literally fresh berries like freshly cut up strawberries and raspberries, not withered up blueberries that were so tiny that you literally laughed looking at them. The creme brulee was pretty good otherwise. In the end this meal, including a $30 tip, cost $170. This is one place we will not come back to for the quality at this price. My suggestion is to try Fleming's if you want to spend a high dollar amount on a nice meal and better service. read more
