We went here with the highest of expectations and maybe that is why things did not measure up to what we thought they should be. I like my steak to be very rare but, when it was brought out is was pretty much raw and the inside was cold as ice. This is partially my fault because I ordered it very rare but, being ice cold is not a real preparation. Secondly, it was not seasoned at all. No salt, no pepper, no garlic, but, lots of air. The sides were underwhelming. My husband had the elk. The elk itself was extremely tasty but was drowned in an abundance of bleu cheese. I am so disappointed with our recent experience here. It was our first time after we have heard so many rave reviews about this restaurant. We wanted to have a special night out on my birthday, so we hired a sitter and got here RIGHT when they opened. The service was terrible and they waitstaff was not attentive at all. Despite the restaurant being empty and having a reservation, we weren't seated right away, so the bartender suggested we sit at the bar until someone was ready to seat us. An hour later, we asked if we could get our table since no one had stopped by to seat us. We got our table and then waited an additional 15 mins without anyone stopping by to take our order (and we almost missed an opportunity for the early dining menu). While the food was good, things were missed- finding the server to ask for more wine or a missed dessert order was tough. I don't know if it was just an off-night, but we will most likely not return (even though it's only 2 minutes from our house.) We ended up being there for 3 HOURS for dinner!!! 3 HOURS!!! Tip: Go to Willow Creek for a restaurant that cares about their customers and has amazing food and drinks! read more

We went for the 5280 deal, and enjoyed ourselves. The waitstaff was excellent- very friendly, polite, prompt, and thorough. My water glass was always full, which is something I greatly appreciate, and I never felt bothered by the presence of whoever was topping it off, which is rare for me. The food was above-average for a steakhouse, and well priced (I took a peek at the menu to get an idea of their regular pricing). Portions were generous, to say the least! My house salad was fresh, but over-dressed. The prime rib was a nice cut of meat, a little on the dry side but still melt-in-your-mouth tender. My husband's steak was well-seasoned to my tastes, although he felt it lacked salt (which was easily remedied with the salt shaker on the table). The veggies were on the less-cooked side, which I love but I know some people hate. I'm not a big apple pie fan, but it sounded good that night and I was not disappointed! Service was pathetic, we had to wait for everything. From being greeted to seating, water drinks, ordering, our meal, our check! 2 members of our party ordered the salmon and we were told they didn't have any. So they tried to make a substitute with crab and were told the same thing. How can that be there is a giant city right down the road? I loved this place. I ordered the tips, mixed veggies, and mashed. All of the flavors were so scrumptious! It was a party in my mouth! My husband had a t-bone and creamed spinach. Everything was cooked perfectly and the spinach had a little peppery undertone. Delicious! The atmosphere is very nice too. VERY CLEAN. I always take that as a good sign. I live in Evergreen and the restaurant selection here is slim pickings. I am happy to have found The Black Hat Cattle company. They clearly take pride in what they do. I found Black Hat Cattle Co. by word of mouth from a good friend in Evergreen. We were having a hard time finding steaks and good ground sirloin during the beef shortage due to Covid-19. The owner was selling boxed steaks at a reasonable price compared to what the local grocers wanted. We took a drive up the hill and bought a box from the restaurant. The owner is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and welcomed us into a lovely dining room and bar area with a great mountain town atmosphere. I will be back for a meal at this wonderful restaurant once they are fully open again! LOVED the steaks! Excellent quality! I hope they continue selling their famous "steak boxes" in normal times! We love Black Hat. We are regulars there. If you are looking for a canned, chain-like steak eating experience this isnt that kind of place. Its REAL... a REAL, established steakhouse... with real bison on the wall, a real bar and real people running it in Mr. Dave and Mrs. Julie... the steak is amazing as are the sides, etc... it's as dressy or casual as you want to make it which is perfectly appropriate to the true Colorado vibe. Its consistently great. The old country western music playing in the background fits the ambiance of the overall, old Colorado feel. Everytime we have guests into town it's on our short list of places to go. I highly reccomend a visit. Expect great food, good people and a REAL Colorado experience. read more

A+ guys! We went in to celebrate a Major anniversary, 23yrs active duty for hubs. He wanted a steak and I craved fish. Surprising enough there aren't many decent fish places in the mountains. We were pleased to find Black Hat Cattle, this fantastic cowboy and Indian themed restaurant nestled in the side of the mountain. They have quite an extensive menu and offer a 3 course special from 4:30-6p for $34 and happy hour drinks. The meal includes either a house salad of mixed greens with Huckleberry dressing or Caesar salad, we chose 1 of each. He ordered the NY strip and I subbed the salmon for the red trout fish combo, which comes with a crab cake, and 3 grilled shrimp. Each meal is accompanied by rolls, and 2 sides, the veggie medley was a delicious kale, carrots, and red cabbage, and a potato, his baked, mine mashed. The meals were cooked to perfection and generously seasoned. I was a little surprised by the meatiness of the fish, but was assured that it is a tougher fish than salmon. To finish you were offered either a Huckleberry bread pudding with whiskey cream sauce or ice cream. After a spinach dip appetizer and drinks, the meals were too much to complete, so we took our (bread pudding) desserts to go. Our server/bartender Denise was fabulous and we were well taken care of! The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because of their usage of plastic and styrofoam. Also, we were slightly disappointed there weren't any draft beer options. My husband and I went here for a valentines date and were very disappointed; it has very nice atmosphere and decor but the food is just mediocre. I ordered a filet and it was dry and had no flavor. I ordered mushroom to go with it and they came in a bowl by themselves and had no sauce on them not even butter so they were dry and rubbery. Could get a better and cheaper meal at chili's. We just went on a Saturday night for the 5280 Restaurant week deal. It was great. I started off with the BLT Wedge salad. I was afraid I wouldn't like the blue cheese dressing but it was good. All 4 of us got the NY Strip Steak, and they were cooked exactly how we asked. We got the Chocolate Delight for dessert and it was TO DIE FOR! Ambiance is really great. Close to Denver, but far enough away that you feel like you're way out of the city. I really loved it, and hope to go back sometime (though obviously not when it's normal priced because I can't afford steakhouses). I love 5280 week! read more

As a cattlemen I was extremely disappointed in the meat quality I can say the two times I have been here the meat was 60% tendon and grissel. Most insulting the manager told me this was typical of a New York cut and the same for the ribeye on the next trip. My husband loved this place and introduced me to it. I always felt it was overpriced for what you got. The last time we ate there it was just awful. The server was rude and slow. We order the ribs dry because my husband doesn't like sauce (we share), so his ribs were ok. There was something very wrong with the sauce they served on the side (it tasted moldy). Well, the waiter (who had been horrible throughout the whole meal) NEVER came back by the table for me to complain. I ate my sides, but figured I'd rather eat the meat tomorrow at home with BBQ sauce than eat them dry at the restaurant. Both of us had completely finished eating by the time the server returned. My meal was certainly ruined. When the waiter finally returned, he didn't even want to hear about the problem. I can't believe we tipped him! The next day my husband emailed the owner (a first for either of us...we were just that mad and disappointed). The owner did respond, and actually apologized. But what floored us was that he didn't say, "hey, we'll buy you a glass of wine or a dessert to share next time you return." Nothing! Certainly not the way to retain a good customer. At least he could offer us a $5.00 comp for the fact that our meal was completely horrible and the waiter acted like he was doing us a favor to finally get our meal on the table. We will never return. Get your act together! You can't keep a restaurant in business with overpriced adequate food and staff who make you feel unimportant. read more

I cant give it any stars. My party never was able to get a seat after waiting for over an hour. From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted quite smugly as we did not have reservations. Three rimes the hostmonster said she would see what she could do, then promptly disappeared. Twice we were told it wouldn't be much longer and then we were ignored. If i had been told that there was really no chance of getting a seat i would have gladly left and desired to return . But to wait over an hour and to be treated so rudely i know i do not want to ever return. Don't treat your customers that way. The hostess needs to take a class or better yet go to a real steakhouse like the keg or capital grill and see how customers should be treated. Very poor poor service. read more

Great food. We were looking for someplace new with GREAT steaks. We had the New York Strip and Filet Mignons. They were excellent. This is a Western-feel gem opportunity to duck out of town into a rural mountain setting just minutes from Denver. It is nice but relaxed. The staff was helpful and glad to see us. If you are looking for fantastic steaks in a unique setting that makes you feel like you got out of town, this is it. This place is one of my favorite hidden gems in the area. Don't let the drive to Kittredge scare you. It will take about 25 minutes from C470 and Morrison Road. The food is consistently very good and a great value. The steaks are high quality and well prepared - better than what I've had at places charging a lot more. The dining room is quiet which makes it ideal for a celebratory dinner with my elderly parents since my father frequently forgets his hearing aids. The service is always very good and sometimes excellent (our waiter the last time we were there was outstanding!). Their Restaurant Week dinner should not be missed. Unlike some places, they don't scale down the portions or the quality for the promotion. Oh, and the bread pudding is not to be missed. read more

This was our first time eating at Black Hat. In fact, we had not heard of this restaurant until we received a gift certificate. We took the short drive from Denver and parked at a small parking lot 100 yards away from the entrance. We loved everything about this place. The owner, Davis greeted us at the door and showed us to our seats. The service was excellent and the food was wonderful. We lived the grilled artichoke. Our steak was perfectly cooked and the side dishes yummy. Oh, and fresh baked bread- who doesn't love that! The atmosphere was nice, not too loud. We had made reservations for 7:00 on a Friday night but we did not need them. There were customers in the restaurant but it was not full. We will be visiting the Black Hat again! read more

Not super impressed, or worth the expense. My $40 plate included a filet that was so over cooked it had to be sent back and the replacement was 20 minutes later, after my wife finished her meal.
