The food was amazing! Some of the best BBQ I've had north of Virginia and other southern states. Cocktails were delicious and are changed seasonally. I had burnt ends and brisket along with Cole slaw and baked beans. Baked beans and burnt ends had a nice spice to them. My wife and mother in law shared a burnt ends and pulled pork platter with mac n cheese and Cole slaw. They loved it. I had a local beer which was good and the ladies got a couple of the cocktails which they loved. We will definitely return as this is just south of our camper and we have been exploring the area more lately. read more

A great place to get bbq in Middletown This restaurant, Black Hog BBQ, started in Frederick, Maryland and has grown into a small restaurant chain with four active locations in the state. Their website states that the black hog is the rarest breed of hogs and they decided to name their company after it. This location, the Middletown restaurant, is the newest addition to the group. We were driving through town and looking for a bite to eat and decided to try it. It is a little off the main road but pretty easy to get to. It is in a strip center on a corner unit with plenty of parking. We were greeted as we entered and taken to a table. The waitress, Athena, did a wonderful job for first-timers like us. She told us that most of the locations are similar to this one with a restaurant and a bar. I ordered a chopped pork platter (sandwich and a side of French fries) and a sweet tea. The sandwich and fries were excellent. The tea had a different taste from the ones that I am used to so that was not my favorite. Food is served on metal trays with butcher paper below and plastic silverware so don't expect fancy plates. The staff was wonderful, the location was very clean and the prices were very reasonable for the amount and quality of food that you get. This is not a white table cloth restaurant. Dinners are served on a cafeteria tray covered in paper, flatware is plastic, and all food is served in small paper containers. There is a roll of paper towels on the table in lieu of napkins. This is not a criticism but it should help to set your expectations. The service was good and all staff were attentive. My first impression after sitting down was that it was too loud to carry on a conversation. The music was loud and the sound was amplified by the bareness of he surrounding. There is simply nothing on the floor or walls to absorb any sound. A few tables with folks plus the music leads to shouting to be heard. Turn down the music or get some sound absorbent materials in the seating area. It might be fun to sit outside if the weather was cooperating. Now the food. Generally good but not great. I give it three stars and that's my overall rating too. I ordered a pork shoulder platter with fries and coleslaw. The pulled pork was good but had some bone chips and was served lukewarm on the cool side. A stale cold piece of cornbread and two pickle chips accompanied the meal. The several sauces I tried at the table were all really good. The coleslaw was absent any carrot or character. Lots of chopped cabbage and some vinegar was about it but it was plentiful. Nothing special. The fries were also lukewarm but they were good. There are few other items on the menu I will try again. It looks like a fun place to take the family and have some good BBQ. I've had better and I've had much worse. The total was only $30 including a 20% tip and included one beer. I'll be back to try a few other items. If they quieted it down and had better temperature holding I would up the rating to four stars. Nevertheless I'll come back to try other items because I saw some ribs go by that looked pretty good. I had the bacon cheese burger it was excellent. My wife had chicken and liked it too. The whole place was very clean. The service was outstanding. We never had to worry about needing anything. I am finding it hard to write this review as I work in the food industry and I know the importance of guest feedback, but I believe it is necessary to share my experience. I have always loved the Urbana location, but I am from Middletown originally and I was visiting family so I chose this location. *The pork was so undercooked* that I first heard from my father that he was feeling sick several hours after our meal. Not long after I began to feel very sick as well. Digestive issues and nausea were non stop all night and morning with painful cramps. You should be embarrassed that a basic smoked meat dinner costing over $100 is making your customers sick. And this is clearly not some random isolated health incident, As my parents' friends joining us for dinner became very sick as well. To put it bluntly so my message is clear; gather your kitchen staff into a meeting, learn how to properly cook your food, and get your s*$t together. read more

I've been to other locations and had good service and food so I grabbed some quick takeout the other night while back in Middletown. The gumbo was pretty good tasting, but it was really thin and lacking for sausage and even rice. Cornbread was good and nice sized portions. The sandwiches and burgers were okay but nothing to write home about. I arrived early and was there with other customers as they packed things up in the back. The staff would constantly unwrap everyone's food to see what everything was and then close it back up. Some sandwiches and containers were opened multiple times by different people. It wasn't really something that made any of us waiting comfortable. I would suggest having a marker or some system to write what everything is when it comes out. read more

She said Personally the Fries needed to be Thicker cut or like Red Robin because you don't get much of the potato itself. BBQ (Arkansas and Texas brisket) was excellent, quite savory, but expensive and very small portions, especially after trimming the fat. Chili and gumbo were more appropriately priced, large portions and tasty, but extremely oily. Sides were mediocre, but again very large portions - more of each than the meats. BBQ salad was a joke: a large pile of lettuce, a few croutons, one (1) sliced cherry tomato, and one (1) cored, halved slice of cucumber with a meat side. Service was excellent. I had the 3 rib appetizer - it comes wet or dry and I chose wet with sauce. The ribs were excellent! And the KC sauce is sweet and a bit spicy. I like that you could order the ribs in multiple sizes. Comes with a tasty piece of corn bread too. Purchased brisket and pork shoulder to take home for later and a side of cole slaw. We were given original sauce to try - I really like that better than the KC even. The pork shoulder was super moist and flavorful. Brisket was good too but the ribs and pork shoulder were the stars in my opinion. Cole slaw was nice and crunchy and more on the the vinegary side of flavor. The meat was very good and the I loved the side dish as it was just a little spicy. My son also had the brisket sandwich. The decor is spartan but clean.
