Good Chinese food in a unique setting but l left a bit underwhelmed, especially for the price. You can find similar authentic Chinese food in many other Chinese restaurants. We came on a Thurs at 6 and it wasn't too busy at all but definitely filled up by the time we left around 7:30. We got a few drinks and beers. For hearing about their drink menu, I was surprised that it was pretty limited list and they also didn't have any beer on draft, only cans. The cocktails were good but not outstanding. For food, we started with the chengdu chicken wings which were huge and delicious. Perfectly crispy and they had a nice sweet/spicy sauce with it. We also ordered eggplant with spicy garlic sauce, Chongqing dry hot chicken, house fried rice, shrimp/scallop, braised fish with napa cabbage and Wok Crispy Salt & Pepper Shrimp & Scallop. Standouts were the shrimp/scallop that were nicely breaded but you could still taste the fish and was well seasoned. Braised fish with napa cabbage was very flavorful and the braised fish was sooo tender. Have visited several times over the past 4 years when coming back to visit family in the area. A number of other reviewers have commented that "things have changed", and I, unfortunately, agree. Visited on a Saturday evening - the place should be packed, but it wasn't. I easily secured a same day bar seat reservation for 8PM. After checking in, was seated at a half empty downstairs bar. No physical menus, everything was done via a QR which is fine I guess, but for a spot that positions itself as a premiere bar a bit tacky. The online menu on the public website is the only menu and where the QR takes you. I asked for a spirits list (logical for a cocktail forward bar), I got a quizzical look and a shrug of the shoulders in return. Given the menu was only 8 cocktails, picking from those I started with the Beachcomber Mai Tai for a whopping $18. This, if it's the true spec, should be a rum forward cocktail with 2 1/2 oz of rum. They batch their cocktails (not a problem) so I couldn't see their build, but there is absolutely no way this drink is made to specification - my guess is they are skimping on rum as a cost play, batching lets them get away with it. Drink was, frankly, pretty forgettable - not bad, just unremarkable. Wanting to see how they could do off-menu, I asked the bartender to make me a Hemingway Daiquiri. Now, for a cocktail bar that has a long history of rum centric and tiki leaning cocktails, this should be an off the top of their head cocktail. It's simple - white rum, lime and grapefruit juice, and maraschino liqueur. Bartender had never heard of it before, and then spent a few minutes staring in to his phone presumably looking up the recipe. He built it using Rhum JM white rum which is absolutely the wrong rum for this drink - it needs a white Cuban rum (which we know we can't get in the U.S.), so the usual sub would be Bacardi, Planteray 3 stars, Probitas, or others. Definitely not a Martinique agricole. This may be a too detailed nit for some, but with the framing that this is supposed to be a premium cocktail bar, this is an error that should not happen, and not for $18. Figuring the third time might be a charm, ordered the Trader Vic 1944 Mai Tai. This is the classic, the standard against which all others are measured. It's a distinct recipe, especially if you call yours the 1944 Mai Tai. This was not that. It was again light on rum with probably the wrong rums used in their blend. It was also substantially over dosed with orgeat making the almond sweetness an almost overpowering flavor versus playing a subtle supporting actor role. Again, swing and a miss. Drinkable if you like sweet, and don't mind hefty almond. But if you want to try the real Mai Tai - this is not it. Overall, for the price, fairly indifferent bar service, lack of information available to the customer (e.g., spirits list, etc.), and fairly off the mark cocktails I think you can find far better spots right now for that same money. If you definitely want that tiki inspired cocktail vibe - your better bet will be places like Wusong Road in Cambridge or Shore Leave in Boston, and I'm sure there are others. This place has a reputation of having amazing cocktails due to a mixologist who is well known, so we were excited to try them out! Come to find out, the second floor is no longer a bar setting but a dining room and there was no bartender up there. The drinks were okay at best but still priced at a premium. We got three appetizers: dumplings, crab rangoon, and "pungent" ribs. The dumpling filling was dry and lacked flavor; they came sitting in a bowl of soy sauce. The crab rangoons also lacked any flavor on their own and reminded me of a cheap Chinese restaurant quality. The "ribs" were a bowl of dry, very chewy meat; inedible at best. I think this place was once something, but it definitely does not hold up to its previous reputation. We were super disappointed. The cherry on top? We ordered our drinks and waited 20 minutes before anyone acknowledged we never got them. They took our order a second time and we waited another 10 minutes for that round. read more

The staff is really accommodating and offered us options for mocktails, which was great. I highly recommend the halo halo mocktail, it was sweet and refreshing! We ordered a lot of food options including the lo mein noodles, crab rangoons, crispy cumin fish, and shredded chicken with spicy garlic sauce. All the food was good, but my favorite was definitely the lo mein noodles. Some of the dishes were on the saltier side as well. We were referred to the Baldwin by friends. They told us the food and drinks were nothing short of amazing, great ambiance and we would need to make reservations well in advance. .... 1. We made a reservation last weekend at 6. When we walked in, there was literally one couple and a single person in the ENTIRE place, upstairs and down. Maybe it gets busier late. 2. The drinks were very good. Carefully crafted and measured with some unique and inventive cocktails. The bartender was talented and attentive. We had their take on a manhattan which was good. The down side? Bring your wallet. Every specialty cocktail on the menu will run you $18+. 3. Ambiance; it's pretty run down in there. It's in an old "mansion" which makes it pretty unique for an Asian restaurant and it could be really cool if any money were put into fixing it up. I would say the upstairs restaurant is nicer and moodier than the bar area. 4. The reason you came, food. There were several innovative dishes in the menu that I would try. The problem is that 2 people can only order so much at a visit. We got 4 dishes: crab Rangoon, chicken lo mein, bok choy and Dong Po Boneless Ribs. The lo mein was typical. The same as you would get from your local take out joint. The rangoons were a step up, with better wrappers, filled well and tasty but not extremely different in flavor. The bok choy was my absolute favorite, prepared simply and an ample amount. No heavy sauce. The boneless ribs dish surprised me as they were battered strips. They looked like clam strips! They were served with chili peppers and nicely spicy, however the description said served with cauliflower and that was untrue. It was just pork strips and peppers. Not in a sauce- which I prefer. Do not look for most of your pupu platter favorites, they are not on this menu. There are a few "American comfort dishes". Most of the really unique specials are online, not on the printed menu so use that QR code to see what's fun and different. Big drawback, this place is expensive! $29 for most prepared dishes including our spare rib dish, $23 for bok choy, $18 lo mein, $15 for crab rangoons...it's a lot! We spent about $160 for the 4 dishes and 1 cocktail each (2 total). Not awful but certainly more than we would usually spend. Love! Such a gorgeous building, and the service was great. We tried three drinks, the Bossa Nova, the Jalisco Sunkiss, and the Strawberry Martini. The first two were awesome tiki drinks, and the last was a cool sweet but stiff option. I'd order any of them again for sure! For food, we had the chicken and corn egg drop soup, the pan-fried pork dumplings, the house fried rice, the General Tso's chicken, and the prosperity noodles with chicken. Everything was really really good! We were avoiding most of the spice because we're spice babies, but the noodles were a very manageable level. Our only notes: 1) the menu has a LOT of nuts, both food and drink, so be careful if you have allergies; 2) the prosperity noodles are a bit of a salt bomb, particularly some of the vegetables; 3) the wrapping on the American style dumplings is really thick, although the flavor is nice. Having gone to Blossom Bar in Brookline I was fully bought in to the idea of a classy sexy cocktail bar attached to a routine Chinese joint. Hell those are two of my favorite things in one place like a Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. But what I forgot was that while the suburbs is an awesome place for routine stuff, it's not so good at unique. The food was pretty ok though I distinctly remember getting essentially the same dish for roughly 1/4 the price down the street. Guess you pay 4x for the dim lighting. You'd think less light meant lower prices. The cocktails we just kind of meh bordering on bleh. They definitely made good Instagram photos but like most things on Instagram they're pretty empty and somewhat nauseating. I guess this is cool for the suburbs but for anywhere else this is an avoid. read more

Interesting twist on Szechuan food and cocktails - I've been to the Blossom Bar in Brookline a few times but I think the food and drinks are slightly better if you make the trek out to Woburn, plus the atmosphere is so fun. It feels like you're in the basement of some eccentric rich lady's basement drinking Mai Tai's. All that said, as someone who puts a higher premium on food over drinks, I thought the dishes were hit or miss and very, very heavy on the salt. The specialty cocktail options at the downstairs bar were limited (if you want more drinks, go upstairs), though they have a full bar and can basically make any drink you want. None of the options really called my name at first but I went with the Ichigo Coast Collin's, because of the strawberry and shiso combo. It was okay, very strong. I wish they offered non-alcohol versions of the specialty cocktails but the waitress explained that most of those came pre-mixed and the only one they could do a virgin version of was the Halo Halo. Food-wise, the standouts were the crab rangoons and the Dong Po boneless ribs. That said, a few of the dishes we ordered tasted exactly the same if you swapped out the protein. The boneless ribs had the same seasoning as the Chong Qing spicy chicken. The Fei Teng fish dish was covered in a thick brown sauce and for a $33 dish, had very little fish. None of the dishes had that characteristic peppercorn numbing Szechuan flavor profile. If you want American Chinese food that's spicy, this is a good option. I give five stars to whoever made the playlist, they were busting out some deep cuts of 90s hits. read more

I've been here a handful of times and each experience has been amazing. I've been to both bars, the Trading Co (upstairs) and the Baldwin Bar (downstairs). Even though they are housed in the same location, keep in mind that they do have different drink menus (the food is the same) and different ambiances. Either way, make sure to make a reservation and be mindful when you're making the reservation since there are two bars! On to the food and drink...The food is good and the drinks are even better! I've had their scallion pancake, prosperity noodles (spicy, but a must try!!), spicy dried rub beef brisket, and tangerine chicken. Everything was high quality and well-cooked. I loved the scallion pancake as it was light, crispy, and flakey, just like a scallion pancake should be. The tangerine chicken was also really tasty; there was a perfect breading-to-chicken ratio and the sauce it was covered in wasn't too sweet. Their Sichuan food, the beef brisket and prosperity noodles, was some of the best I and my friends have had. There was this nice slightly numbing flavor that wasn't too overwhelming. Drink-wise, I'll have to split it up based on the two different bars. - Baldwin Bar, Downstairs: I've ordered the Halo Halo and Chopstick Mai Tai. The Halo Halo is a really great frozen cocktail, you can taste the ube and isn't spirit-forward at all. I really recommend this drink. The Chopstick Mai Tai is also really tasty and paired well with all the food we got. I also got a Passionfruit Daquiri on the house during one of my visits (have I mentioned amazing service!). - Trading Co., Upstairs: I've had their spin on a Piña colada, the Avenue of Giants, and the Gold Ceremony. The drinks are a bit fancier upstairs as well as in the dining rooms. I really loved the strawberry mascarpone espuma that was a part of the Avenue of Giants since it was so light and flavorful. The Piña colada was so tasty too and our bartender was so kind and made it just for us. The Gold Ceremony was really spirit-forward but also very good. Overall, this place is a must-visit. I love the drinks, food, and service. Our servers have been amazing EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. The only thing I will say though is that you have to make a reservation. The place is designed with a cool island feel. Outdoor patio tables. Music. A cool interior. It's the most energized spot in the burbs. Growing up, we really never had many options for Thai, Japanese, etc. One thing we did have was Americanized Chinese food. This place brings me back to being a kid, eating dishes like sesame chicken or shrimp, sweet and sour, fried rice, etc. The combination of savory and sweet is so good. This place reminds me of this spots in NY I grew up on. The duck was super dry, but everything else was really good. I was so looking forward to the duck and ended up leaving more than half on the plate. Fried rice was awesome. I really enjoyed it. The sesame shrimp definitely brought me back. My husband and I stopped in here a few weeks ago on our way back from another restaurant and we asked for seats at the bar. We were told it would be a 4 hour wait, so our eyebrows raised and our interest was piqued. Four hours? We hoped that meant this place was incredible. So he booked us dinner for a week later. Our waitress was amazing- super friendly, attentive, and helpful. We appreciated and enjoyed her service. The drinks my husband ordered were both good... as other reviews mentioned, heavy on the ice. He enjoyed them. I tried one and thought it was tasty. The food was mediocre. The sesame shrimp I ordered had an extremely thick sauce slathered on top that didn't have a ton of flavor other than "sweet." It wasn't awful.. wasn't great either. Shrimp sizes were decent. The Dan Dan noodles had about 1 TBSP of finely ground pork on top (So finely ground that we didn't even taste it). All we could taste were the Szechuan peppercorns that were all through it.... If you've never experienced these before, they're gonna numb your tongue and make you feel like maybe you're having an allergy attack. An interesting experience to say the least. My husband's dry chicken dish was the same... peppercorns galore. Not much flavor other than that. The crab rangoons? Delicious. Our favorite part of the meal. 10/10 recommend. I was asked if I had reservation and told there was no room but that I could wait and something should open up. The host was nice but very busy on his headset coordinating a spot for me, I was sure. After waiting a short while, I was led downstairs. The bar was completely empty, except for two people. I'm not sure if they were expecting a rush or if this is a procedure for Covid. The atmosphere would definitely benefit from just letting people go down and order a drink... stand if they have to...because this bar needs some life. The setting is lovely, however. So I sit at the empty bar and order a $15 Queen of Tejano. The bartender was aloof. The drink arrived. It was gorgeous and well made drink but served in the tiniest coupe glass I have ever seen. It was good but only lasted a few sips. The bartender never talked, checked on me or asked if I wanted to order food. These reviews seem unmonitored so I guess they are doing great. An excellent experience start to finish. Cool vibe - it's in an old mansion that dates to mid 17th century. Two separate bars with different craft cocktail styles. We sat downstairs - my wife had the Trader Vic Mai Tai and loved it. I had the Uncle Harvey's airplane. Really well executed drinks and nicely balanced flavors. Not your avg local Chinese rest Mai Tai (they have their place and I love those as well). The food is done by the Sichuan Garden restaurant. While it's a more limited menu than your avg place the food is well above average. As close to authentic Sichuan as I've had in some time. Service was very good. Attentive without hovering. This review is multi fold; have been here many times, to the downstairs bar, downstairs regular tables, patio seating, and also upstairs at the trading company. Here we go: 1. Regular restaurant dining is good if you want good food and a quiet place to talk. I don't mind it, if I want a flashier night I'll make the reservation for upstairs or in the downstairs bar. 2. Patio: great addition to this place, adds more seating, and when the weather is nice you get a great breeze and even though there isn't much of a view to speak of, the outside of the building is pretty and they have cute lights up. One note though: if you are mosquito prone wear off spray when you sit outside here; there happens to be a bog type body of water behind the property. 3. Downstairs bar: the OG "Baldwin Bar" - very cute. I've sat both at the bar and at the tables here and enjoyed both seating options equally (I honestly prefer table seating, I don't do that well on a bar stool after a couple drinks lol). Bartenders/servers are fantastic, same great food and a great menu of drinks (make sure you order from the downstairs drink menu as upstairs menu is different drinks) 4. Upstairs: The Baldwin brothers trading company: super cute aesthetic with the library decor. My first visit up here I sat on the couches which was comfortable but I felt a little on display as they're in the middle of the room. Maybe other people wouldn't mind that, I suppose its preference. The drinks upstairs are epic! They have a version of the drinks they can do that has dry ice presentation and if you want to just go on and be extra, go for it! I had been hoping to come here for several years, and finally got the opportunity this week. I was honestly a bit let down, and I'm not sure I'll bother to come back. First off, the service was remarkably mediocre. For a place that is booked start to finish all night and charges the prices they do, I shouldn't have to flag the waiter down to order another $22 drink. Food came quick and so did the drinks, once they were finally ordered. Food was great, perhaps not quite as good as sichuan gourmet, but really close. We got a few apps and shared a main, and I was very happy with everything we ordered- it tasted fresh and a step waaaay above what you normally get for Chinese food. The let down was really around the drinks and prices. The cocktails were fun and inventive, but they were weak, expensive, and short. I ordered too, and they erred heavily into "wildly creative" and not enough into "good". Peanut oil is great in my Chengdu chicken, maybe not as much in my cocktail. The second drink I got was so heavily frothed that it was hard to taste the cocktail beneath. The two drinks I got were $17 and $18, and they ranged from 17-22$. Food was similarly expensive, $17-22 for an entree that elsewhere costs $15-18. Absolutely LOVED my time at Baldwin Bar. The staff is incredibly friendly and I can't say enough good things about the drinks and food. This is a sister restaurant to Blossom Bar in Brookline and it made a lot of sense when I had learned this. First of all the location is great. I love that you can find something like this outside of the city. The building is an old historic home and you wouldn't expect the inside to look like what it does! So much character! In addition to outdoor seating in the front of the restaurant there are 2 levels inside that offer different menus. We started at the bar on the 1st level and my first drink, the halo halo, was too delicious for words. Being Filipino myself, I knew I had to try this beautiful purple drink. Not only did it look amazing, it tasted even better. I could've drank many more of these all night but I wanted to try different drinks as well~ all of them were delicious but this halo halo was my favorite. The food was also yummy~ Chinese Szechuan food. Some of what we had includes the sichuan pickled veggies, cucumber with garlic sauce, the scallion pancake, crispy lo mein, and a few other dishes I'm failing to remember! But I assure you, everything was tasty and enjoyable!! Needless to say, I will definitely be back next time I'm around the Woburn area. I came to the Baldwin Bar at the recommendation of a friend. It was sort of in a random location (which is actually a good sign for speakeasyish places). When you enter the bar, it has an island feel, and while we came pretty much as soon as they open, I can imagine this place is probably super popular for those that live out this way in the burbs. They did a great job of making custom drinks based on our vague suggestions, although several of the drinks we had were fairly heavy on the ice. The menu also gives descriptions for each drink like "juicy, refreshing, crushed ice" which is a fun way to label things. The spicy dry rubbed beef brisket was solid. The waitress who served us most of the time was friendly and attentive, like most of the staff, except for one guy who was super brusque and borderline rude. I was particularly impressed with my mocktail which was delicious, flavorful, and made with just as much attention as an alcoholic beverage. (Some places treat mocktails as just a throwaway item on the menu.) We got dumplings for our appetizer and they were hearty with some nicely cooked dough. However, I wasn't too wowed by my beef lo mein. Very little beef and just didn't taste any different or special than a lo mein you'd get at a simpler establishment. Perfectly flavored, sauce not too thick or thin, love the crunchy vegetables with the chicken. 5/5 stars for it having a hip/funky vibe inside. 3/5 stars for everything else. The cocktails - Good, but the ones that come with crushed ice are $15-$18/drink and in four sips you will be done. No, not big sips, it's just there is so much ice and hardly any cocktail. $18 for four sips worth of cocktail?? The entrees (which don't include rice?) - 3+ extra to get rice with any of your $17+ entrees. Give me a break. I pay $17 for kung pao chicken and have to continue to be ripped off by paying EXTRA for any amount of rice. I've never seen such an expensive entree not include even a small portion of rice that's typically a part of the dish. We split the pork dumplings, which were ok, but did not stand out in any way compared to what other restaurants have to offer for pork dumplings. I took my fiancé here to celebrate his birthday on Wednesday night (6:30 pm), we had the best time! We had two rounds of cocktails. My fiancé got the Uncle Harvey's Airplane and I got the Chi-Chi Martini. Our mixologist was friendly and efficient and made excellent cocktails! I will definitely order the Martini again! The ambiance is very comforting and fun, low lights and dim ambiance. For food, we got the tiger skin peppers and pork dumplings. Both were delicious, a little spicy but I loved them! My fiancé got the shredded beef and I got the salt and pepper shrimp and scallops as our entrees. Everything was amazing. Highly recommend this spot. Love this place, came back here after 2 years. Got the queen of tejano drink, and a custom tropical mezcal drink. The tejano drink is pretty stiff, maybe a bit too much tequila for me to sip on. The mezcal drink was amazing. Got the chengdu chicken. It was dry and had plenty of sichuan peppers. Better to get rice along with it. Would recommend making reservations before coming here. read more
