My sister and I were up in Vermont and decided to stop for lunch. I have been to Black Rock a handful of times a few years ago, when my in-laws were alive, but it was my sister's first time. We were both quite pleased. If you know me at all, and have read my reviews, you know my comfort food is a good burger and fries. I had forgotten how good Black Rock's burgers are! Perfectly cooked and reasonably priced. The fries were plentiful and delicious, and their bottled root beer was also quite good. Our server, Sue, was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Not great. I ate at the bar, so my service expectations weren't especially high, but the staff came across as borderline rude. I started with the shrimp cocktail, followed by the surf and turf, which included a filet mignon and a lobster tail. The shrimp cocktail was served hot. It was actually good, but it was the first hot shrimp cocktail I've ever had, so it was a bit unusual. When my surf and turf arrived, the filet was overcooked and the lobster tail was undercooked. When the bartender asked how everything was, I told her. She responded that they could put the lobster tail back on the grill to cook it longer, but there was nothing they could do about the filet. I agreed to have the lobster tail cooked a bit more. Unfortunately, when it came back, it was overcooked to the point that it felt as though the chef was trying to make a point rather than fix the problem. Growing up in San Diego, there was this place: Black Angus Steakhouse. A solid, go-to joint any time you wanted a great steak dinner - for not a ridiculous amount of money. But much like my dreams of finding consistently good Mexican food ever since I moved to the East Coast in 1995, a decent steak joint is nearly impossible unless you want to pay handsomely. Enter Black Rock Steakhouse. They want to be Black Angus, but fail on several points: ambiance, and... well... the meal overall. We got the tomahawk steak (split between two, it was beyond plenty). Thing is? It's promised "on a hot rock" - no hot rock. Also? Never have I ever had a Caesar salad with mozzarella. And the dinner rolls? Not only were they dry as a bone, they were also cold. Same with the Beef Tataki appetizer. Cold. The 'mint julep?" Barely a fleck of mint, no sugar - just watered down bourbon. And don't get me wrong, it's not that the food is terrible, it's not... it's 'just okay.' And if I want a date night with a great meal? Let's just say these guys appear to be thriving on being the only game in town, which is a total bummer, because they could be so much more. read more

When they first opened the food was great. The last, and final 2 times I went the food was not good at all. My wife and i went for our 20th anniversary and i ordered Prime rib and lobster. The prime rib was so chewy I couldnt eat it. The lobster was way over cooked and was a leather texture. My wife ordered salmon and it was basically raw. Her baked potato was room temperature. Our anniversary was ruined. We decided to try again a few months later. I got a steak with the rock. It was cool to the touch. I literally put my hand on it. My wife had seafood alfredo and it was ok but kind of greasy she said. When i asked about the rock being cold, waitress was upset and said she'd handle it. We just made reservations at Black Rock Steakhouse for our upcoming ski trip in March. This will be our 3rd visit! Nice varied menu that can please just about anyone! When winter brings us to Okemo, we make the trip down to Black Rock. It's not by the mountain, but less than 20 minutes away. I think that helps with the prices! read more

Ate here for the first time tonight....soooo good! Three of the five of us ate steaks that were cooked to perfection! One at the broiled seafood dinner and it was amazing! I selected the seafood Ala vodka pasta and it too was really great! If I were to find something that could be improved upon, it would be the calamari appetizer, bread and the salads that came with dinner. These weren't bad, but I'm not a big fan of Yorkshire pudding (the bread, because it doesn't tend to have any flavor to it in general. They made it correctly, just not a fan of it. The calamari tasted good, but the appetizer was mostly a caprese salad with a little bit of calamari...but if you are looking for something light, it could be a nice light meal, the calamari was cooked well. The salads that came before dinner were HUGE! To me it seemed like a lot of waste going into the trash. They could easily cut the salad portion size in half and still have a good dinner salad. Our server was wonder, the food tasted great, loved the light up menus making the menu easy to read, and the drinks were great as well! Over all...I highly recommend Black Rock, but make sure to make reservations. This is a popular (smallish) restaurant for a reason. They are available on Open Door for reservations. read more

Our experience was pretty average....we went for lunch. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. My biggest complaint was the bottom bun on the sandwich was incredibly soggy and inedible, almost like a paste. I went with a rather large party so I assume they made the sandwich and let the hot chicken sit on the bread for a while during the time they were finishing up everyone else's plates. I was able to scrape it off and just eat the top bun. The French onion soup was so delicious (5 stars!). I would definitely order it again! The table ordered fried pickles for a starter and I wasn't a huge fan. I'm not sure what the sauce is that they served with them but I felt they would have been better with ranch. Burgers were cooked perfectly, the fried goat cheese salad was a greater starter along with the blooming onion which was ginormous and we couldn't finish it! What a disappointment! I was so excited to eat here but it was terrible. We waited one full hour for our food to come. We were only a party of 2! My steak was something I wouldn't feed my pet! So chewy; I literally couldn't swallow one piece. When I told my waitress when we finally saw her again - she offered me a to-go box. I said - I just told you how awful it was- why would I want to take it home?? I ordered the mixed grill - steak, chicken, shrimp. The shrimp was good. The chicken was a tiny piece. On vacation in the area and this was one of the restaurants our hotel suggested. Glad we picked this place. Place is nice, we had some privacy with the seating and my husband and I were able to talk without too much noise around. Service was good and quick. Food was excellent. My husband and I both had the filet mignon which was probably the best I ever had! For dessert I had the lava cake and my husband had the apple crisp ala mode. The service was horrible. Ordered grilled tai chili oysters. Very nice flavor but not presented well. Not shucked off the shell and pieces of shell present on oyster. Yeah I know thats what I get for ordering oysters in VT. The prime rib lunch special was awful. Very thin slice of meat and flavor was sub par. Chicken sandwhich was ok. We visit Vermont each year the week of Thanksgiving and always go to a steakhouse the night before Thanksgiving. This year we stayed in a different town, so we tried a local steakhouse that had good reviews from the homeowner, so we decided to give it a try. I will start by saying the decor is super confusing. Like a hodge podge of sorts. The waitress - super abrupt. We asked if there were any specials before we got involved in looking at the menu itself. She curtly replied "It's on the wall" or something like that. Mind you that didn't help those of us we had our backs to the bar wall where it was written in chalk (quite a lot of specials too) and even those facing that direction had to stand up to see it because it wasn't viable over the high booth backs. When it came time to order, we knew exactly what we wanted and for someone who didn't seem to want to be bothered waiting on us, we were trying to make her job easier by telling her exactly what accompaniments we wanted for our sides, yet she seemed hell bent on rattling them off to all 4 of us. It was bizarre. We did not elect to have any of our beef selections cooked via the hot stone method, but rather did kitchen preparation. Luckily the food made up for some of the oddities. If you like popovers you will enjoy them. My family isn't a huge fan of them. My Caesar salad was excellent and the prime rib was very good also. The kids enjoyed the truffle fries. My steak fries were unremarkable. Very dried out. We were too full for dessert. Hours appear limited. It seems they are only open until 8 pm. read more

Soooo...went in as a 1-top and seated in perhaps the worst table in the house. That's fine...I'm a single on Sat dinner service. I get it. Service was amazing, and continued to be through my visit. Back of the house though...Eesh. Scallops wrapped in bacon app was rubbery. Okay...again my fault. I know bacon takes 10-12 min to cook and scallops about 90 seconds, especially ones that small. Even less time. How could I expect otherwise? Ordered a MR ribeye. What I got was pretty blue...like less than rare. I kinda figured when it came to the table very quickly and still steaming that there was no way that steak was rested. Asked to have it put in the oven for like 60-90 seconds and it would be perfect. Came back steaming again 8min later. This time MW to well. I sucked it up. It was terrible and seemed underseasoned. To the front of the houses credit they did offer to re-fire and I was comped a desert (very thick and dense chocolate cake with a decent ganache). Again, service was excellent. I will try again. Perhaps an off night for back of the house, but really...it's a steakhouse. I'm no stranger to a professional kitchen and have experienced meals across the US with many being Michelin-rated. So perhaps I'm just a too much a snob for rural Vermont. Granted, may be true. read more

I visited Springfield with friends. My rating is based on a Friday evening dinner and late Sunday morning breakfast. Party of 4 arrived 10 minutes before Black Rock is scheduled to close which is 9:00 PM. We sat at the bar. Our waitperson'Brooke' promptly greeted us and took our drink order (1 wine and 3 Martinis). We asked if the chef would prepare Thai Chili oysters which he did and they were delicious. Dinner consisted of broiled seafood platters and Saku tuna plate. The seafood platter was fresh, nicely seasoned and tender. The Saku was thinly sliced and fresh. Breakfast was a combination of buffet and made to order omelettes. We ordered a variety of omelettes including sausage, spinach, jalapeños and cheese. All were very good. I had biscuits and sausage gravy from the buffet, and hash browns. The biscuits were fluffy and gravy was creamy. Overall we had a great experience and will definitely be coming back to try their steak. read more

I have been dying to come here since my husband started raving about it after he went. It was so good, we even got his parents a gift card to go there. After waiting (very patiently for three years, I might add), it is finally my turn, and I know we'll be back! We came for an early dinner, and made reservations for 4:00pm due to COVID. It wasn't busy when we got there, but the restaurant quickly started to fill up starting around 4:30pm. We sat outside, which was nice, except when our steaks came, so did the flies (not much the restaurant can do about that though. Guess those flies know a good steak when they smell one). We ordered the fried gator as an appetizer and steak "on the rock" as a main. I got the Argentinian Steak and my husband the Rib Eye Steak. Our main courses came with a salad and a starch as well. First came a few slices of bread and a couple popovers served with both regular and honey butter. The popovers were light and went well with the honey butter. The regular bread was a bit dense and firm, but tasted good. Our salads came quickly after that. Our waitress explained all the salad dressings are homemade. The raspberry vinaigrette, which I ordered, is made with real raspberries and is more like a thick dressing rather than a traditional vinaigrette. My husband got the thousand island, which was beautifully tangy. We loved both, and since they were served on the side in little disposable containers (likely due to the pandemic) we took what we didn't use home. Similarly to the salad dressings, the sauce that came with the fried gator was also obviously homemade and amazing. It was spicy and flavorful. The fried gator itself was in a peppery batter and still moist (NOT dry and overcooked). I really enjoyed it as some of the best fried gator we've had. Finally, the main event had arrived! Our main course came out -- first my husband's and then mine. By this point, most of the outside tables were full, but no one else had ordered the steak in the rock. The waitress explained how to cook the steak to me (as a first-timer) to cut off bite-sized pieces to cook individually on top of the rosemary spear for flavor, which seemed to entice some of the other customers. Both my husband and I were surprised most of the other people did not know about cooking on the rock. We assumed this was what Black Rock was famous for, as its name implies. The steak themselves were good. I ended up liking my husband's ribeye better than my Argentinian cut because my steak smelled a little funny and "earthy," which affected its taste to me. I think this may have been due to how the cow was raised and the age of the cow. All their beef is quite fresh, so I think that smell/flavor had something to do with that. I've had similar experiences with beef from local slaughter houses and farmers as well. Sources online indicate the "earthy smell" is linked to the beef being grass-fed. For me, this was a turn-off. Our starchy sides, loaded mashed and loaded baked potatoes were more of bite breaks between our steaks. They were great, but the steaks were stealing the show. We ended up taking most of our potatoes home. By taking those potatoes and half our steaks home, we were able to save room for a delicious homemade chocolate mousse. The chocolate mousse was topped with fresh, homemade whipped cream, dark chocolate chunks, and Hershey's syrup. We loved it! The mousse itself was a tad grainy and definitely could have been smoother for a truly sublime dessert, but the chocolate flavor and lightness all mousses should have were there in spades. Even though I didn't like my cut of steak, I would definitely come back. I'd like to have their filet mignon next time. Our server was helpful and attentive, even as the restaurant grew busier, and she had tables both inside and outside. This is a great restaurant with a fun twist. The first thing you notice when you walk into the restaurant is the seafood smell. I hate seafood; that's why I'm going to a steak house. Seafood, no matter how fresh, smells like low tide and rotting seaweed to me. Really off-putting. Anyway, you sit down and look at the specials on the board and just about every single one is some kind of surf and turf thing. So OK, no specials for me. I know I want either a filet or prime rib, and the regular menu did not disappoint. They have both. And the steak entrees automatically come with a side salad and some kind of starch (potato, sweet potato or rice). You can sub the starch for another side if you want, which I did (Broccoli with cheese sauce - delicious!). The menu says an extra charge may apply for subs but we weren't charged. The house salad was fine, nothing special, but good. My husband ordered the filet so I got the prime rib. He ordered medium and I ordered medium-rare. What he got was medium-rare and I got rare, so the gauge that the chefs use is a little off. You might want to keep that in mind when ordering. Oh, forgot to mention that you have the option to order your meat cooked by the kitchen or "rock cooked," which means it's served rare on a hot lava rock, which cooks the meat in front of you, right at the table. I don't want to sit there, hungry, and watch my meat cook. That's why I'm going out to dinner. It might be a novelty for some, but... whatever. I don't REALLY mind rare, so we didn't send the meat back. The au just was delicious! The meat was pretty good. Not the most tender but not terrible. It being prime rib, there was a thick ring of fat around the meat. This was the most most fat I've ever seen on a prime rib, but it didn't come at the expense of the size of the meat, so it only meant a larger treat for the dog when we brought leftovers home; not a smaller portion for me. All good. My husband said the filet was pretty good too. Drinks: My husband got a local IPA (lots of local brews on tap) and I got a glass of cabernet. Husband gave the IPA a thumbs up and he didn't get a headache from it. He asked for the 23 oz and got a 16 oz. After he finished the 16, he reminded the waitress that he had ordered the 23. She brought another, 23 oz, no charge. Nice. The wine was served in a mini carafe with the empty glass on the side, so the portion was great. Speaking of our server, she was delightful. Very professional and showed up at all the appropriate times. Didn't hover too much. Perfect. The atmosphere, aside from the seafood smell, was pretty good. The place was packed - luckily we had a reservation and were seated right away. Decor is lots of wood, as you might expect at a steakhouse. Everything clean. All good. So overall, it was a good experience, but I feel I have to take away stars for the smell and the cooking level of the meat. It's on par with a very good Texas Roadhouse experience, which I know can be very inconsistent, but imagine a very good experience at a Texas Roadhouse (it happens), minus the dancing waitstaff.
