Black Spruce Brewing Company is a local brewery that has an outdoor, partially covered dog friendly area with a fire pit and a large indoor tasting room. My husband, our little girl and I came by here on a Monday around 5:30 pm. My husband ended up ordering: Aroma Dome, IPA, 16 oz, $7- I don't really like IPAs and so I wasn't a fan of this beer but my husband liked it (which really matters since he picked it for himself). Service was quick and friendly. Restrooms (individual) were clean upon our visit. I liked the space that this brewery had over another brewery that we had visited right before and would prefer coming here again if I lived in the area. read more

Really pleased with all the beers I tasted here. Visiting from Anchorage, for only a few nights how were we supposed to pick which brewery to go to? As there are a few of course. Well we ended up at Black spruce because they are open on mondays. A handful of the others are not. We got a flight, any three 4oz pours for $9. They were all delicious! We got a rainbow: Pilsner, milk stout, and the wow sour. They actually had three dark stouts on tap, first we got the Vernal Buzz Milk Stout with Coffee & Vanilla with the flight. I recommend this one over the Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrel-Aged Long Nights Imperial Stout which had a stronger after taste(longer time in a barrel) the vernal buzz I could taste the chocolate and vanilla notes along with the coffee. It was smooth and easily drank. The later one had a strong taste (motor oil) which is common with stouts but not my preference. Lots of fruitier flavors but done well! Check them out! Didn't have a food truck the night we went but check their website for food truck schedule and other things they offer thru out the week. read more

Large | Chill | Options Large - this is a massive facility in terms of seating. They have an outdoor area and two sections inside that easily fit 35-40 each. Chill - The place is super chill. The staff is very helpful, and the patrons are low-key and looking to converse with neighbors. Options - they have a lot of options. I had their cider which was a solid choice. I would happily get it again. The Price to quality ratio is pretty good, given it is Fairbanks, where everything is more expensive. Why not 5 Stars?: - I wish they had better snacks/food available. They had some food available but it was overpriced and nothing special. It was solid if you have the munchies but, not a major selling point. - I wish they had a consistent relationship with a cool food truck because the brewery experience relies on the combination of unique food/beverages. Pro tip - They have tons of parking. So, no worries about leaving early. Pro tip - They allow you to bring outside food. So feel free to pack snacks or have uber eats delivered. read more

Really enjoy this brewery! Especially now in summer they have a really nice patio setup with a lot of space to enjoy. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I also love to come here on Wednesdays when Megs eats and treats is there serving my favorite gyros in town. Out of the several breweries I visited in Fairbanks, this one definitely had the best location and facility. There was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The bathrooms were spacious and clean. The bartenders were friendly and quick to get everyone their orders and complete payment. They had some cool merchandise for sale although I did not purchase any this time. The beer was tasty but my husband did not like the sour he tried. I would recommend stopping in for a couple beers...since that all that Alaska allows you anyway! read more

This review is a long-time coming. I was in Fairbanks in December, for work. I came here to unwind, at the height of COVID. I was a little disappointed in the folks in Fairbanks. They love to make fun of us fragile Anchorites and to pose in front of that -40F sign but, when I was drinking beer outside in the winter...I was the only one! All the locals were huddled up inside! Anyway, enough intra-Alaska rivalry! This brewery is fantastic! It's easily one of the best in the state. Their specialty is most everything, but when I was there they seemed to be focused on hazy/juicy IPAs and sweet(er) sours. Both of these takes on beer can resemble fruit in different ways: the latter because it's literally cut with it, the former because there has been a ton of innovation in strains of hops...many of which have been bred to produce juicy flavor compounds...right in the hop cone! Although there are lots of breweries in the lower 48 brewing like this, there are very few in Alaska, and this is the only one in Fairbanks. (I'd argue the only one we have in Anchorage is Anchorage Brewing Company) I loved everything I had here, and I wish I could have tried more but I was naturally bottlenecked by Alaska's 8pm closing times...and the fact that I had to work the next day. We are so lucky to have a brewery like this in our state, this is a must-visit if you're in Fairbanks! read more

Having tried several other breweries while on our honeymoon in Alaska, unfortunately Black Spruce Brewing was our least favorite. I had high hopes for this brewery because I am a big fan of sour beers. However, all of the beers that I tried at Black Spruce were disappointing. Their sours were too sour, to the point of upsetting my stomach. My husband does not like sours so he chose a darker stout and was underwhelmed. I did appreciate that they highlighted local artists and sold some of their products in the brewery. But after having visited other breweries in the area, this one just fell a little flat. read more

When I left Fairbanks for Seattle five years ago there was only one brewery. In a booze fueled town you'd think the craze would have migrated sooner. I guess boozing tends to make you put things off, so you get a pass Golden Heart City. So, when I made my triumphant return for my best friends wedding this fall I was pleasantly surprised to find out there were a couple new breweries to kill the afternoons (I completely forgot how there's nothing to do in my hometown). Located in the industrial district of town, the building is sparsely decorated with a main bar, and tables with bar stools. Who needs ambiance when you're there for the beer (and, spoiler, it's fucking good). Apparently they have food from outside vendors at times, but there wasn't when we visited that afternoon. We went right after they opened. Don't judge! As I said, there's literally nothing to do in "The Banks," except booze, and getting married too young. I'm writing this review a few months after the visit, so I can't tell you what beers I drank. I just know that they were both IPAs, and were tasty. Beer wise, this is the best brewery in Fairbanks. It would be one of my favorite breweries if they were in Seattle. I thought it was that good. Its kind of shocking when you find something that's good in a small town you grew up in where the best "Mexican," restaurant for years was Taco Bell! But I digress... I'm glad my hometown got something nice. Sad that Black Spruce opened after I left, but some things are probably for the best. It's a little far from my house, and I probably would have got a DUI by now being that they didn't have Uber there five years ago. Strange seeing Fairbanks all grown up. Its like shedding a single tear learning that your parents found out how to text. Happy, yet sad knowing that you'll get incessant, and pointless messages for the rest of your life. Ended up with a can of Mushers Paradise! Omg this is one great Imperial Sour! Its has a wonderful fruity flavor to it which makes it seem like there's no alcohol in there but it runs at 8%! It has a great sourness to it so I wouldn't want more than 16oz of it. But you want to keep drinking it because how delicious it is. We came for several reasons: the beer, the food, the photos. Parking was a bit sparse on a weekday. Since this place was new to us, we came to try the beer. I typically like oatmeal stouts for the flavor, creaminess, and balanced darkness. BS's stout seemed all that at first sip but then imparted a lingering sour afterglow. Not what I expected and not what I preferred. Maybe it was a fluke batch? Tried the musk ox, which was a little better but nothing that stands out. The Short Days Golden Ale was the best of the bunch - sippable, well-balanced, medium body, good flavor, not too fruity. We ended up getting a quart can ($8) to go. I suppose 1 out of 3 is ok. Maybe try the tasters first before you settle on a full glass? On the afternoon we went, there were pizzas (~$12) by Hungry Robot. Looked tasty so we had a few nibbles. It was ok but this review isn't necessarily about the mobile pizza. Food offerings could change. Another thing that could change is the art in the walls. This time, it was aurora photographs by a local artist. The space is bright green & bold. Pretty drink menu on the wall behind the register where you can order what's on tap. There is some seating & some standing room. For 4pm on a weekday, all the seating was occupied. The high ceilings made the din of conversations loud. Would we come back? Maybe. It still seems fairly new and they may hone their beer recipes over time. I'm not a fan of the loudness and crowdedness but that seems to be the typical tap room vibe. read more

This was my first time to Black Spruce Brewing and I really liked that they offered kombucha as a gluten free option. The space was large on the inside and the outside area was dog friendly. However, seating was uncomfortable and very limited. Knowing that it's newer, this would be what could be improved. I craved to sit at a table or for some high top seating while outside. I loved the shirts at the simple logo on the shirts with the state, tree, and heart. I am torn between 3-4 stars simply because of the seating. The kombucha was smooth and had good flavor. Unfortunately I couldn't tell you much about the beer, but my coworkers really enjoyed it. I liked that it wasn't over crowded and that there was a food truck also offered for snacks (even if it didn't offer something for my very specific diet - I don't hold these things against anyone). read more

I travel to FBX for work a couple times out of the year and after my first visit here, a year ago, I always keep this place on the list of things to do. Having lived in the Pacific NW and currently in Anchorage, I've had my fair share of great craft beer. BSBC is up there with best of them. Always has a varied selection and nothing lacks. I personally enjoy their hazy IPAs best. I've lucked out with nice weather every visit but I could see how it would be limited seating on a not so great day (no covered patio) but their small outdoors is great on a sunny day. If they keep the same mindset they started with, this will be one of the top breweries in Alaska, easy, within the next 5 years if they aren't already. Their beers are great, with the perfect variety, and their menu has a creative layout that makes it easy to comprehend each brew. The staff has always been stellar and helpful and even led me to try something I wouldn't normally drink but ended up being my favorite. Only thing I dock a star for is it's not exactly the best atmosphere if you go solo. There's no bar, only tables and a bar-like counter lining the two sides across from the serving area, so it's a little awkward to try and sit between parties and there's no real opportunity to engage with others unless you just sit near them and try to involve yourself in their conversations - Usually not a problem for me but I found this particular place tricky to do so :) they do host food trucks sometimes too tho so that's nice to also have the occAsional food option. read more

Had two flights. From Ohio with my wife (also reviewing.) Good space, decent service, excellent outdoor drinking space in the early summer with some friends. Flights come in three's. Standard pricing, maybe more expensive than hoodoo on the flights per ounce. Good variety. Didn't like the NE ipa but generally don't like those due to skunky-ness. Unique availability of rye beers. Both pale ales on point. Wife really liked theirs. Would give 4.5 stars if easy, but rounded up. read more

"TOO BAD, BUY ANOTHER BEER". That is the basic gist of what i was told and an extremely poor experience in customer service. I was told they have a pale ale by the girl at the register so I ordered the pale ale. When it was poured I noticed it was hazy, I can not drink anything unfiltered as it hurts my stomach and it's an IBS medical issue. Before even taking a drink I explained I didn't realize it was "hazy" and if they could please pour me another beer of something not hazy. They told me they do not offer exchanges as it is their policy, but I was free to purchase another beer. I explained I did not realize it was hazy since the person at the register who told me they had a pale ale did not say a hazy pale ale. They pointed to the board and said it says hazy and on the menu it says hazy. It wouldn't have been a big deal to replace the pint especially since I hadn't taken a drink and obviously I wasn't trying to take advantage of them and this was a true mistake and health issue for me. The whole situation seemed very odd to me and horrible customer service. we will be drinking our beer at HooDoo from now on where they are happy to give samples of all beers before pouring and in my opinion have a much better selection and customer service. I can't comment on the beer since I couldn't drink what they poured me and I certainly wasn't going to buy any additional beer from this brewery after that horrible customer service experience and other choices in the area. ** update to response. I was not informed this was a hazy pale ale at the time of ordering, i was told they had a pale ale so that is what i ordered. if I had been made aware of it being hazy or unfiltered I simply would not have ordered it, i would not order something I couldn't drink. Immediately upon seeing it was hazy i did inform the employees that i could not drink it because it would hurt my stomach and if they could exchange it because i would be unable to drink it. I don't know how that explanation is interpreted as a preference as was suggested by the responder. My review is in no way a criticism of the quality of this establishments beers. My fiancé really enjoyed her beer and said it was excellent, as i am sure all of their beers are. Gorgeous, airy space, delicious beer, and friendly and helpful staff. We tried several tasters, hung out in their outdoor seating area (and got to pet several great local dogs) and had fantastic pizza by local foodtruck Hungry Robot. (Pickle pizza! Weird but good!) Nice indoor/outdoor seating options and an overall cool spot. The Robot pizza truck was pretty good too (not sure if food trucks rotate or if they are their daily).
