This review is long overdue. We have been patronizing Blackhawk Pizzeria for nearly 30 years. Their thin crust pizzas, spinach calzones, and sausage and pepperoni rolls are the best in town. We ordered a couple of pizzas online, and they were ready right on time and were piping hot. Inside was tidy and clean. They have 2 styles of pizza: Neapolitan (thin crust) and Sicilian (thick crust). I love Neapolitan pizzas, and these were good, but I was disappointed the crust wasn't as airy as I expected. Usually Neapolitan pizzas have a thin crust but a very large and airy rim, but the rim crust on these were flat. But the pizzas themselves were very tasty and they didn't skimp on the toppings. read more

We have never had a great experience here. Yesterday my granddaughter had a multi-hour appointment in Blackhawk Plaza starting at 12:45 pm. This pizzeria advertises it opens at 11 am, so we planned that I would get slices there for her to eat during her appointment. I went there at 2 pm and the place was locked up. No sign saying why. No sign clarifying what the hours are. Very unhelpful and unbusiness-like. I double checked the hours online and telephoned. A rude guy answered and said they open at 4 pm. I noted that their website says they open at 11. He said no, 4 pm. No apology, no explanation. Then he practically hung up on me. The staff at the business where we had the appointment said the place had never been good. Never again. read more

The older gentleman was very rude and even dismissed me with a hand gesture when I politely asked if I could order a pizza with thick crust. That kind of behavior is unacceptable in customer service, and I honestly don't know how this place continues to operate with such an attitude. I cannot recommend this establishment. read more

After reading several negative reviews, mainly about the "older man" being rude. I was curious to see for myself. My party of six went for a dine-in experience. The place was clean but definitely dated and a bit drab. It could use a makeover to feel more inviting. As for the service, I can understand some of the past complaints. The older gentleman everyone mentions was there, along with a younger employee. He doesn't have a particularly friendly or welcoming demeanor. He honestly looks exhausted and like he's been working far too long without a break. That said, he did his best to be kind and accommodating. There was a clear language barrier, but he never lost patience as we tried to understand him. The pizza itself was okay, nothing to rave about, but not bad either. The container of red pepper flakes had barely a teaspoon left, and the lid was so grimy I didn't want to use it anyway. Small things like that could easily be improved with a little attention to detail. They only had one menu for our entire table, and half the drinks we tried to order from it weren't available. So yes, there are things that could definitely be improved but overall, it wasn't a bad experience. Pizza is a personal preference, and this place might not be for everyone. But if you do decide to give it a try, go in with an open mind. Don't judge solely on appearances. I walked away feeling compassion for the man running the place, and I sincerely hope he gets to retire soon. He's clearly been working hard for a long time. read more

We've been coming here for over 10 yrs. I'm not sure why I haven't left a review here. Consistently piping hot pizza whenever we pick up. We always order half and half and BP makes it with enough toppings, same great chewy dough (not too thin or too thick), crust it always eaten, and tomato sauce is perfectly balanced that all my NYers friends say this is the closest to NY style pizza in the area there is. read more

Best Pizza in Danville! I been coming here for 10+ years and every time it was perfectly prepared. I've tried others around town like Melo's, Ascona, etc. and I have always come away wanting Blackhawk Pizzeria. Their dough is always made fresh and hand rolled. The tomatoes sauce is not over powered with oregano or too thick. The toppings are anyways good quality and very fresh. I think the secret to why it tastes best is they cut everything thin so it cooks evenly and combines into one awesome layer. They also crumble the sausage evenly all over. Lastly because everything is so thin, the pepperoni is still able to get browned around the edges and curl up slightly. Over the years our order has changed as the kids got older, but always great. First was pepperoni only (I didn't allow cheese only, we just waited until they could handle the good stuff ). After a while we started doing pepperoni with 1/2 sausage, then we did pepperoni and sausage, then we start adding mushrooms. Now that the kids are older and our usual order is pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, onions, tomatoes and garlic (oh, the garlic is free). They do have thick crust pizza, a big rectangle of dough, tried once, not for me. When we order on the phone, they anyways assume thin crust. We always order to go, the place is not really a place you want to sit down and eat. The pizza is the only thing that matters! Also we get the salad, it's ok, nothing special. They use the same thin sliced tomatoes they add to the pizza. They also add black olives, which we asked to be removed. The lettuce is a combination of head lettuce and spring mix. We usually add more stuff at home like red onion, carrot, avocado, etc. But the main reason for getting the salad, other than guilt for not having many veggie, is the house Italian dressing. I had a very unpleasant/interesting experience today. I called to see if they were open and the gentleman who answered the phone took my order and I asked him if we could order ahead and then dine in as I had four toddlers with me and wanted to be respectful as far as a chaotic lunchtime waiting for Pizza to be ready. He immediately said "no, pick up only " which was fine, it was a nice day so we chose to eat the pizza outside. We walked in and the gentleman said not one word to me other than here is your pizza and I asked him if we could have a few paper plates and some napkins and he rolled his eyes to both questions. I had four toddlers with me so it was a valid request. The pizza was nothing special, but the review is more about how poorly I was treated. I would never go back here. Love this local pizza joint. We have come here a couple times in the past to dine in pre covid for the combo pizza (bell pepper, sausage, pepperoni, onions) and we have been big big fans!! The crust is so soft and sometimes you can't beat that convenience of dining close to home. They have delicious ranch, and overall fairly reasonable prices given the neighboring competition is set at a pretty high price point.. a Large Amici's pizza costs us close to $35! One complaint was that when we ordered for delivery a couple times during covid, the pizza was inconsistant with the previous experiences. The toppings were all concentrated in the center of the pizza leaving an undesirable amount of plain crust on the outskirts!! Anyways, definitely give this place a try if you are in the area -- they do deliver around town but I recommend picking your pizza up or dining in once we are able to. read more

Sadly, their food is good...but any sense of deliciousness quickly dissipates with the owner leaving a bad taste in his customers' mouths. Order was cancelled by business so I really can't rate them fairly. There was an issue so instead of just calling & informing us we got an email & a txt that order was cancelled w/ no real explanation of why. I think I possibly know why b/c we added mushrooms & jalapeños to one of the calzones but if you would have called we would have gladly been ok with NO mushrooms or jalapeños. We're still waiting on refund to are credit card since order was cancelled. Five business days & it should drop. We were looking forward to havIng a couple of calzones & a side salad but we will try again & make sure no modifications. I guess the instruction box was of no use in this case. Things happen, so we will let it go at that! After reading some of the reviews we will not be ordering any food from this establishment!!! The order being cancelled was a BLESSING! We normally get pizza from Amici's but their quality has really gone downhill and the prices keep going up- $28.75 for a large plain cheese NY Pizza! So we've been looking for a place that serves good NY style thin crust pizza at a reasonable price. Based on the Yelp reviews, that's what I was hoping to get at Blackhawk Pizzeria, but unfortunately we were disappointed. The crust may be thin by CA standards, but it's way to thick and doughy for our tastes. The sauce was pretty good, and the price was $10 cheaper than Amici's, but we won't be return customers. Also, I did takeout, and was surprised to see the owner/cook wearing his mask around his chin while he was preparing our pies, and only pulled it up over his mouth and nose when I went to pay. In fact, I almost hung up due to his terse tone. I think the thin pizza was overcooked. The crust was tough and hard. The flavor of the toppings and cheese was actually pretty good. My friend and I went riding Mt. Diablo and we parked in the mall parking. We came back hungry after climbing 4000ft, so we decided to eat some pizza as a reward. We ordered a large pizza half chicken and half veggie and asked the person to add garlic. The total came out to $24.90 plus tip. The guy was great, courteous and he offered some paper plates for us to eat in the plaza. All good. We took our pizza and went back to our SUV, and we decided to eat in the trunk. We opened the pizza box and found no chicken. It was just half cheese and veggie with garlic. The store was not at all busy. Ours was the only order and yet somehow, he forgot to put chicken on one half. I am sure I paid extra for the chicken and the tip. I still give 4 stars because the pizza was great, fresh and the sauce was sweet and tasty. Took out 1 star for the absentmindedness of the person who made our pizza despite having no other orders. We were surely disappointed that we did not get what we paid for. But again, we decided not to make a fuss and the pizza tasted good. Anyway, check to make sure you got what you asked for.
