Holy moly, their breakfast sandwiches are spectacular. Came in to this new place with no expectations at all and their offering of coffee, pastries, and food stuff was legendary. The "Hot Potato" breakfast sandwich, which is a crazy thing made with a spicy hash brown and pickled onions with eggs and bacon on a fresh croissant, was very standout. The "Farmhouse" sandwich was very basic in comparison, definitely by design, with standard breakfast meats on a brioche bun, and was also excellent. Had a pastry and it was pretty good, too (it's a bakery so it should have been). Going to have to go back to try pretty much everything else on the breakfast and lunch menu. Great! read more

I have read about the triple tax and now wonder if I was charged it as well? I was there early opening day. We bought a lot of stuff, and I should have paid attention. But I find this in bad form and reflective of the business. When you open, you do a test transaction to be sure that this sort of thing does not happen! We probably spent $70 there. How much did we pay in triple tax? As far as the food, some good, some meh. I got the ranch sandwich. It was small, really small, for the price. Most of the ingredients were good, but the chipotle sauce was just hot, not Smokey and flavorful. It tasted like they put a ton of regular Tabasco in instead of chipotles. The spice was too strong for the sandwich. It just did not meld well. My father got the tomato and cheese croissant. The pastry itself was good, but the filling was not great. We brought a bunch of things home. The special bread pudding was not special. The brioche cinnamon roll was fine but not impressive. The challah was no better than a grocery store challah. The best two things were the two chocolate tarts. One was chocolate caramel and one was chocolate raspberry. They were very good. The shop is cute, but there is only a little seating. read more

I had really loved this place, the service, their food, treats and coffee. But this review is for their bakery, and that's in their name even, so- my husband ordered me a birthday cake from there earlier this month. It was so dry. It crumbled to bits as we cut it. And then it didn't taste good. And the buttercream frosting was not that great. We even put it on the counter for as long as they said to before serving. It was a huge disappointment at my party. We had lunch here and ordered some BLTs and couple drinks. The latte was good but came in a 6 or 8 oz cup. The ice tea was excellent -made there and unsweetened. Food was flavorful and came with a wonderful pickle. Sandwich was smallish and resembled a finger sandwich. All ingredients were top-notch. Service was a bit slow but they are just starting out and will find a lunch crowd gear soon. Ambiance is perfect and kept clean / open. Could use some decent background music. Open from Wednesday to Sunday was an odd schedule but ok. Parking is barely enough,so plan on parking off property and walking over. Try it you'll like it read more

I originally posted a review based on the triple taxes they charged, but they contacted me immediately and refunded for the error. They were very nice about it and I appreciate their effort! But get your receipt just in case upon transaction since this business is still new! We picked up some baked goods to go, and they were decent. The cookies were delicious! Very buttery in flavor! But the Brioche wasn't my favorite as it did not have much flavor. Cafe is super cute and customer service is great! I'd love to go back and try their in-cafe menus as well! The service is outstanding, the variety was excellent, breakfast sandwich had brioche but it was hard and tasted like it was old. The ingredients in the sandwich were tasty but I had to cut the majority of the brioche bread off. The chocolate tart with raspberries was perfect. Crispy tart shell, soft luxurious mousse and deep dark chocolate ganache with fresh juicy raspberries. The dirty chai latte was perfection, not too sweet. Highly recommended! They have al kinds of treats to buy like marshmallows, cookies and pastries. I did buy a loaf of their sourdough bread. It was excellent but I noticed that it was made i Costa Mesa. I thought or assumed they made all their items in house. The chocolate vanilla cream croissant was flaky and delicious. I hope my next trip turns out to be a little bit better. read more

We discovered Blackmarket Bakery earlier this year and it's quickly become our favorite place for coffee and sweets. Staff is always super friendly and welcoming. It's such a treat showing up in the morning and getting baked goods fresh to go along with a fresh cup of coffee. Easily my favorite and preferred place to get a latte too. Most places either put too much milk or they're extremely watered down coffee. Not this place, lattes here always have the perfect amount of coffee ratio balance in the drink and the coffee tastes rich. Highly recommend stopping by here! read more

Their bread is not what I expected to fall in love with, but the seeded sourdough and dutch crunch have become such wonderful additions at home that I had to share. Their sandwich selection is also amazing and I'm thankful the menu has stayed the same so I have been able to get their awesome flavors consistently. Hot potato, phoenix, figaro, and gobbler are all great and unique to blackmarket bakery. I've been here twice now and i don't exactly know how i feel about this place. The first time i came was just to grab coffee and i was very excited to see that they serve dark horse coffee. I got an iced caramel latte with an extra shot and it was pricey but SO good! The second time i came i got the same coffee without the added shot and it was way too milky i couldn't taste the rich espresso flavor at all so that was very dissapointing. My bfs latte just tasted like milk as well. I got a few pastries which were all pretty good but not amazing. the cinnamon roll was my favorite! I also got the Hot Potato breakfast sandwich which was a bit too salty for me. Overall i think this place is a bit overpriced and wish they had a bigger selection of pastries. read more

SO excited to have blackmarket bakery in oside! We've been excitedly awaiting their opening. I lived in Costa Mesa about 9 years ago and used to frequent their Camp location, and was so sad to not be able to visit once I moved back to North County San Diego. Now I can get my fix every weekend! Today we got: Dutch crunch bread loaf (sliced to go) Cinnamon roll Farmhouse egg sandwich Shot in the dark tart (raspberry chocolate tart) 2 ham and cheese croissants Everything was as delicious as I remembered, maybe even better than I remember. Their ham and cheese croissant is truly the best and no others that I've tried can compete. So buttery, best quality ham, and flavorful cheese. I can't wait to load up on cookies, marshmallows, breads, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches all the time. Employees were very nice and didn't take very long to get our food. So darn happy to have a local bakery - and one with bread! I know that sounds odd to say that I am happy to see a bakery with bread. Isn't that the core of a bakery? You'd think. However, visualize any other bakery in Oceanside (there are only a couple) and note that NONE have bread - a loaf of bread! I have always been disturbed by the 34 ingredients in grocery store breads. Even the breads in grocery stores that are packaged to look like they were baked there in the store (most were not) are filled with unrecognizable stuff. The ingredients list says it all. Alas, I have been on the hunt to find something with the short list of ingredients that I recognize. . First time I walked in I could see through the glass partition between me and the kitchen a giant bowl with about 30 eggs in it being whisked by a young man in a spotless kitchen. On the shelf behind him were various bags of flower and what I suspected must be the live yeast. In front of me, below the glass partition, was a small selection of bread ranging from Sour Dough to Dutch Crunch. I picked one up. The plastic wrap around the bread was open at one end because the bread was still warm and needed to breath!. I took it home unsliced (they will run it through the slicer if you want). I have been back every week since. One week my favorite was sold out so I needed to hang out for 20 minutes until the next batch came out. The place is pleasant and easy to hang out in. It smells like the crossroads of heaven and earth. So I did not mind waiting. I got a cup of coffee and sat for a while watching people come and go until my loaf of choice was ready. I have had one of their breakfast sandwiches, their fresh scones, and a couple other items. It's all good. I will let other reviewers focus on the rest of the business. I am hear to tell you, for a few bucks more than big box store bought crap, you can get this bread instead. I suggest you eat their bread slowly, smell it, feel it, put real butter on it. Pretty disappointing experience. I came in on Friday morning and there was one other family sitting down. We ordered a cinnamon roll from the pastry counter and iced coffee. After waiting for 20 min I had to ask for the cinnamon roll. I was given a cold cinnamon roll with rock hard icing, so I asked for it to be warmed up, after waiting a couple more minutes I was given the same cinnamon roll still cold and hard icing. Before leaving I explained our disappointment to the cashier and was told there is "just 2 of us " and "you can ask for us to warm it up again". Waiting over 20 minutes is more than enough , I was given a coupon for a free cookie , asked to redeem it and was told they didn't have any. The pastries here are INSANE! You have to get there early because they run out quick - don't be surprised if you get there at 11am and they're nearly sold out. If you can get your hands on an Ube Cheesecake, pop tarts things, a cinnamon roll or the lemon tart - don't miss the opportunity to try it out. Cool interior and some outside seating too if you bring a pup. Lots of other desserts available that you can take to go. The lunch sandwiches aren't their specialty, but they're not bad. read more

Had a mixed experience with Blackmarket Bakery. Was initially really excited to try them, we ordered a cinnamon roll, berry basque tart, almond croissant, a berry poppins and got some strawberry marshmallows. We loved the basque tart, almond croissant, and poppins but the cinnamon roll and marshmallows were nothing but pure sugar! These items were so cloyingly sweet that no one in my family could even finish them. The service wasn't the best either. It took a while for the cashier to acknowledge us to place an order when we were waiting right in front of her. She also almost forgot our basque tart and we only found out when we opened the box at the shop and noticed it wasn't there and we had to tell her about it. The aesthetics and the ambiance are wonderful, but please go easy on the sugar for the above mentioned items, and a more welcoming/attentive FOH staff would be great! read more
