We visited on our family vacation and were looking for a restaurant to accommodate our large party with a wide array of dietary needs. The front of the restaurant has considerable outdoor seating and it is covered with fans which is so appreciated in summer. We were a party of 12, and the service was exceptional. Jackie, the owner, was also very attentive and incredibly thoughtful, making sure we had everything we needed. The food was delicious and everyone really enjoyed their meal. Hold your wallet open then plan to go get a real meal at Sterling Tavern, Pop's Kitchen or Atlantic Hotel. Food tasted ok, for the bird's portion they give you, but needed a bank loan to pay for the meal. What a great restaurant! Even though the weather was rainy, we enjoyed our outside seating. Even though we're not vegetarian, everything we ordered was on the vegetarian menu and it was amazing! Had high hopes for this place. I saw it listed as one of the best little restaurants. It was adorable farm to table and decorated very whimsical. My husband ordered the fish and chips, and it was just OK it was snapper with the skin on and the cross just fell right off of the fish. I ordered a salad, actually a chicken salad on lettuce with cranberries and nuts. It was good however it didn't state on the menu that was flavored with Curry. My family was driving from NY to North Carolina with our golden doodle, and was pleasantly surprised to discover this pet-friendly gem of a place for lunch. We loved the relaxed vibe of the outdoor porch and the super-friendly service. The food was amazing - burgers were tasty and grilled to perfection! The surly hostess should have been our warning to turn around and go to one of the other restaurants in Berlin. Who argues with two old people who say that they'd like to eat inside on a day that's over 90 degrees and very humid; and who cares if the hostess is, as she described herself, "an outdoors girl." Anyway, that was our reception today. We wanted to try a couple of the 'small plates,' so we ordered the samosa and the empanada as appetizers. I used the singular, because they serve just one of each. My wife liked the flavor of the samosa, but did not like the empanada; I did like the empanada, which turned out to be the only lunch item I found palatable. My wife ordered the cheeseburger and I had the curried chicken-salad sandwich. Both came with fries. Both were hideous, as were the fries. The chicken-salad was just a scoop of shredded thigh meat with a lot of raisins in a curry-infused mayo. Not what one would expect for the price. The burger had a strong, unpleasant taste; when I took a bite, I had to spit it out. It definitely tasted to me as if it had some sort of MSG product; to my wife, it tasted like it had garlic salt. Either way, it was bad. We left most of our burger and sandwich. The fries were also bad -- limp, not hot, and they had soaked up too much oil. Because I have a serious MSG allergy, my wife asked the waitress to check with the kitchen to see if they used any of it in their dishes. In response, the surly hostess appeared and introduced herself as the chef. Not content with assuring us that there was no MSG in use, she then informed us that our dislke of her burger was obviously because we were not used to eating fresh meat, only the frozen kind. So, argumentative with us on arrival, and insulting to us as we departed. This is a definite one-and-done for us. Our waitress was very good, which is about the only positive thing I can say about the restaurant -- even the tables are packed too close together, so that your neighbors are almost your table mates. Nasty chef/hostess; uncomfortable physical layout; and extremely disappointing food. read more

I had the crab cake dinner today. The crab cakes were indeed made of large chunks of jumbo lump. However there was no crab taste at all and no seasoning at all - very bland taste. The primary taste was mayonnaise. I mentioned my disappointment to the server who was sympathetic, however the manager would not discuss it. Ambiance of the restaurant was unique and modern. The food was mediocre. I felt like it was once really good, but went downhill. The food was over seasoned and too salty. I got the crab bisque, which was unexpectedly broth based. The BLT cesear dressing was plopped at the bottom of the plate and barely mixed. The dressing was also lacking flavor. I had some of the best eggplant ever at Blacksmith! I've never had thick slices of eggplant that was so perfectly fried (no grease!) yet so tender. I want to know their trick! Their other food was great too, the soft crab special was again, perfectly fried. The crispy crab deviled eggs were fun (the whites were fried) but a little messy. The short rib empanada was wonderful, the meat was so tender! We find that the small plates menu is more exciting than the main dish options so we had four dishes to share between the two of us. They are pretty reasonably priced for the portions. The service was peppy and the place is cute and comfortable to sit in. One day we have to make it back for the happy hour! During lunch, the same woman pulled all the staff together and lectured them (in front of guests) on some procedure they were doing wrong. Very unpleasant and unprofessional. 4 of us went to this place. We asked if we could get the ribs and grits on separate plates, no, was the answer. So we ordered 2 cheese burgers and asked for them to be well done. They were red inside. When I told the waitress she said that's the way they cook them. When I said I ordered it well done, she said they don't take the temperature of anything to see how done it is. The Black Smith has taken amazing measures to ensure the safety of staff and patrons. I was asked to sanitize my hand and given instructions on when to wear my mask when I went in. My first trip here for lunch. Outdoor/patio is so charming, well shaded under the large tree. It would be very pretty with string lights in the evenings. It was an extremely hot day in the upper 90s but we were comfortable with the shades. The only annoying thing are flies which constantly landed on our food. My daughter and I ordered three appetizers, samosa, empanadas and crab devil's eggs. The former two only comes with one piece each for about $8, which is pretty pricey. The devil's eggs were delicious and my favorite. The pastry shell of the samosa didn't taste fresh. It was way too crispy. Overall, our dining experience was pleasant. read more

We came to the restaurant for lunch, were seated right away. The story says' Farm to table'. I always like to get seasonal dishes , so I ordered a soft shell crab sandwich. My husband had deviled eggs and fish tacos. The crab was small and had thick breading and looked very dark what suggests was fried in old oil. French fries were very soggy and absorbed too much oil. The fish tacos had much breading as well. The deviled eggs: just the presentation. The preparation of the food is not what I would expect from Farm to table restaurant. Had lunch this weekend at The Blacksmith. When we got there there were three groups of people waiting outside. They directed us inside to give our name. We were a party of two and were agreeable to eating at the bar. She said there was only one seat at the bar , took our name and told us to wait outside. The bar area was nearly empty. Just broke a fundamental restaurant rule. Not wait outside but wait in the bar with a cocktail while we get your table ready. Waited outside for 15 minutes before we were seated. Things got better then. Great service from Madison. Cocktails were professionally crafted. We had The Smitty & Maple Walnut Whisky Sour. Very Good. Had the Crispy Chicken sandwich which was great. My wife had the Crispy Eggplant sandwich which was not crispy but it was delicious. Sat on the enclosed deck which was a little chilly. I've been coming here for about 3-4 years now and have recommended this restaurant to many people before. I love the ambiance in here. After Covid happened they added a great addition to the front to utilize more seating area. When walking in you get that "neighborhood local restaurant" feeling. I've tried Caesar salad, vegetable samosa , Nashville chicken, curried chicken salad sandwich, Brie cheese platter, pappardelle with "jumbo" shrimp and a shrimp curry dish. My last visit with a takeout order was super disappointing. The pappardelle and "jumbo" shrimp (which I've had a couple times before) was not jumbo. There was barely any truffle cream sauce and the shrimp were little baby shrimp, not anything I've received before. When they boxed up the to go salad they put the dressing on it so, it was super soggy by the time I received it. Hope this was just a fluke incident. I still have hope for this restaurant though because I have had many other great visits dining in. read more
