4 of us had dinner at Blacksmith last night and the food was very good. We started with a special appetizer, a soft shell crab served with homemade cole slaw and a fried green tomato. It was excellent. The crab was fried but not greasy at all and with a very light batter. For dinner I had the shrimp curry. I would've liked more veggies and maybe not such an overwhelming coconut flavor but very much enjoyed the dish. My husband had the short ribs served over shrimp with polenta and it was soooo good and such comfort food. Another diner had the shrimp and crab with pasta. The chef forgot the crab meat, and the server agreed that she didn't see any either. The server went to the kitchen and brought out some crab meat to add to the dish...however she then said "the chef said the crab meat was there but here's some more"!!! Wth? Some things are better left unsaid. Speaking of service it was REALLY slow. We were told upon arrival there would be a 10 min wait which was 40 min. The server was super busy and everything took a really long time, from arrival to leaving, we were there for 3 hours. However, it was the night of the bathtub races so I think they weren't prepared for the crowd. Lastly, we sat outside and it began raining...although there is a roof we were getting dripped on, and the server disputed that lol, it also got quite chilly and we asked for the overhead fan to be turned off, and we were told that they could slow it down but not turn it off. Mainly because of the service, fan, and dripping I'm giving this 3 stars, but I would say the food is a 4. read more

Many times when in OC we go into Berlin and the Blacksmith never disappoints . Staff friendly , charming setting , no pretense . I have gone onto the kitchen to hug the sous chef ; it's that good . Fish of the day is usually are choice . Wine is varied with good choices , cocktails .... if they only had Lillet it would be an excellent martini bar . So if you tire of the fried food du jour at most places , give this a shot . read more

The service was nice. The eggplant small plate was good. Too much cheese. The cucumber- elderflower martini was ok but it wasn't what I expected for elderflower. The pasta was the real let down. It was supposed to have truffle oil. We didn't taste truffle at all. When we mentioned it to the waitress she brought a cup of "truffle" oil but I'm not quite sure what it actually was. Truffle is very strong and we should smelled it right away; however, , but we had to struggle to ascertain that it was truffle oil. I was disappointed in the main entree. read more

4.5 stars. 90% of my crab cake was lump Blue crab. Fresh caught with a mild sweetness that was balanced by the creaminess of their homemade tarter sauce. Nuff said...Pictured are the crab stuffed deviled eggs. Everything simply delicious. If anything, there could have been slightly more complexity/spice added to the food. All the beers on tap were from a local brewery called Burley Oak. Nice to see a grassroots effort of local businesses supporting each other. Delivery and service all top notch - the bartender was juggling making drinks for the whole restaurant and serving all the bar seating yet didn't lag in making sure we had everything we needed during our experience. This is a new tradition to part of my road trips up and down the eastern shore. read more

We always enjoy finding a restaurant with creative choices. We stopped in for lunch on our way to Virginia Beach and ordered the crispy pork belly and the vegetable samosa as appetizers and they were both excellent. For our entrees my wife ordered the killer taco with shrimp and I ordered the soft shell crab sandwich. The taco was the better choice of the two and was exceptional. The soft shell had a little too much batter for my liking and overwhelmed the crab. The hand cut fries were good but lacked that really nice crunch that comes from a two step blanching followed by a crisping phase. They were somewhat soggy. Since we were there just at opening I suspect maybe the oil wasn't at full temp yet. The service was excellent and the restaurant had a great ambiance. The quality of the ingredients were outstanding. The preparation was very good with a few very minor misteps that would not discourage me from returning. We visited at a time when crab was hard to source. I appreciated the chef's decision to remove dishes instead of substituting lesser quality crab. The menu is varied offering a nice range of dishes from shirt ribs to chicken, crab to burgers. The mac and cheese would satisfy the younger diner and the vegetarian and vegan options, beyond the standard salads and a soup, were nice to see. We thought the portions were generous for the richness of the flavors. In fact, the cevice could have been halved and I would have been fine with both the portion and price. The favorite deviled eggs were more filling than you would imagine and the cold artichoke soup was a refreshing dish enjoyed on a warm day. The lemonades (one jalepeno and one mojito) were crisp and cool with a fine balance of flavors. The service was friendly and prompt although I suspect they are a bit short-staffed for front of house -- a fate shared by many restaurants these days. The restaurant was a bit stuffy that day and too hot on the patio for us. I thought the cevice was a tad too sweet and the soup was a bit on the salty side for me but not for my wife. Do not pay with a credit card!! We were double charged! The waitress told us she ran the card twice but not to worry , it will just show as pending and you will not be charged twice. However, we did receive a double charge. I called the restaurant twice asking to refund the one charge. They said the refund would effect their payroll and their accountant was handling it. We never received credit as the restaurant said. It has been more than a month and our credit card company is having to disputing this. Don't trust them. Food was just OK at best! read more

We had a fantastic meal at Blacksmith. The special today was a quiche with tons of crab and fresh vegetables. It came with greens with a yummy and light Balsamic dressing. They do a good job of cleaning between patrons. We will be back the next time we come to Ocean City. read more

If you're coming to here for dinner, make sure you get there before 9:30pm before the kitchen closes. We got there at 9:44 and were informed that even though they were still open and didn't have the exact dinner hours posted anywhere, they only had a small dinner menu available until they close. We were fairly disappointed but stayed to give it a shot. I ordered the deviled eggs and the pork belly: two off of the "small sides" menu even though the portions of the pork belly were larger than a normal appetizer. The deviled eggs' description did NOT say it was fried and that was something that I feel like people should be aware of prior to ordering. While the filing was delicious, the bed of greenery and everything else was very salty. There was too much old bay seasoning. The noodles in the pork belly dish were fairly good but the meat itself was comprised mainly of fat. The Far right chunk started out meaty and good with a yummy creamy sauce on top of the crispy top, but progressively got more fatty as I worked my way left. I should've ordered the double patty veggie burger. The atmosphere was very hipster and seemed like a quaint place to eat. Just don't get there after the kitchen closes was the lesson learned from that night. read more

We went to the restaurant a few months ago when looking for dog friendly restaurants on the way to Assateague Island. We weren't expecting much, but wow! The outside area was not crowded, the dogs loved it, the food was beyond expectations, and the beer selection was nice. The food was so good that I'm writing this review a few months after the fact. I can't wait to be back in the area and go here again. Berlin is a very cool town as well. I recommend anybody in the vicinity to come check this place out. read more

Went to this place on the way to Cape Charles, VA. Went with my family of 4 and our dog. They were the nicest, they gave our dog water, checked in on us, and generally catered to our needs. The location outside was beautiful and comfortable. Lastly the House Burger was one of the best I've ever had. Definitely coming back on our way home! read more

Fabulous vegetarian options, including an entire veg menu. Having recently moved to Berlin, I have found Blacksmith to consistently be in the top three for vegetarian friendly food on the daily. They have an amazing cheese plate, which is listed as an appetizer but is massive (literally fed me, my wife, and my six year old). It's gorgeous. They also have veggie burgers, curries, and all sorts of weekly specials. In closing, if you are interested in healthy food, or even not-so-healthy food (fab cheeses anyone!?) check this place out. Also, has a wonderful outdoor seating area that is available winter and in season. (Winter they have heat lamps). Its covered, so even in icy or wet weather, you can sit outside and enjoy. Such a cute little place! And the food was delicious! But our server was either very new or just didn't know how to answer any questions. I am one of those people that asks the server for their opinion on dishes or on beers or special beverages if I am not familiar with it. She couldn't tell our friend what their lightest beer was. Then when she brought him two samples, she only named one of them and couldn't remember what else she brought him so it made it harder to figure out which one was the one he wanted. She couldn't help me and my girlfriend on what special drink to her. She wasn't able to answer questions on the food options really, and I over heard another waitress going over specials which we were never told about. I do recommend going here because it's so cute and the food was very delicious (pork belly fat was amazing!) but I hope you get a more experienced server! Faithful reader, please forgive me, on my first trip to Blacksmith, I did not sample: the Short Ribs over Polenta, nor the Flash Fried Oysters; I also skipped, the Drunken Clams(Drunk on Burley Oak) My dining partner had Salad with Steak, I had a bite... Delicoius! I was feeling rather basic that evening and I ordered the House Burger. Meat and potato lovers, BEWARE, this thing was awesome. Two hand formed patties layered with Cheese delivered on a locally sourced fresh baked Brioche. On the side pan fried heirloom potatos (?) I washed it down with 2 Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA's, A perfect match - exactly what the doctor ordered. I should point out that Blacksmith offers a full bar and has Burley Oak on tap, I however, went with the Dogfish Head; I have been bashing them (Dogfish) a bit since Burley Oak came on the scene. I know that the owner of Blacksmith spent many years in the Rehoboth Beach area, so I tipped my hat to her past and opted for the Dogfish 60 minute IPA. It was a perfect pairing - I was right. Pre-pandemic, I would have rated this place 5 stars for its food, service, atmosphere, and outdoor dining. Post-pandemic and the first place we attempt dining out to take advantage of their outdoor courtyard, and I'm impressed. They temp you at the door and require sanitizer. Masks are required to walk in to your seat and indoors. They have baskets to collect menus and some obvious protocol for cleaning between guests. Plants staged between spread out seating. Servers were really warm and welcoming. Food was excellent. And dog friendly. You can't lose here. read more

Great Decor, but you can't eat furniture! Service was slower than slow and was not so busy. I think they must have messed up our order. I really don't know how you can mess up a steak that much! Rude service from the hostess, an older woman, and from our server. The kind of rude where they want you to know they're barely tolerating you. Our server - a red-haired male with a man-bun - talked down to me because I asked a few questions about the dishes, trying to find something my kids would like ("it's seitan, why would it be spicy?") He was so pointedly rude and condescending that we left without ordering. And when someone's so blatantly rude to you for no reason, and in response to everything you say, and does it while while making the kind of challenging eye contact that lets you know they don't care, you start wondering if it's because you're the only non-white person in the room.
