Picking movers is kind of like buying a used car when your car is on the side of the road smoking: you know you're doing to get screwed. Bad analogy, but picking movers always feels like you're going to get played somehow; slow movers, crazy pricing/sneaky fees, etc. I never experienced that with Blake & Sons. I worked with Shannon and Carmen to set up my move. I had a two move team because I was already packed and ready to go. I have a 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment with A LOT of boxes (don't judge). I was a bit nervous because I only had my loading dock at my pick up location for 1.5 hours. I was terrified it was going to take the guys a long time to wrap furniture, get boxes down, load the truck. I couldn't have been more wrong. They were lightening fast! They had the moving carts loaded before I could even sit back down on the couch. They didn't piddle around. They understand people want their moves to be done efficiently. They were done within the time I was quoted. They took better care of my furniture and belongings than any other movers I've used. I didn't feel like I got screwed by a used car salesman. I feel like members of my extended family took care of my move and set me up for success. read more

We couldn't be more pleased with the moving service that Blake & Sons Moving & Storage provided. They arrived just on the early side of the expected range of their time for arrival (9:50 a.m. at a time estimated to be between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.). They packed both quickly and carefully. They had me take pictures of anything having any prior damage, for the protection of us both, which told me they were being thoughtful and diligent in their work. They came with a plentiful number of insulated blankets to protect all of the pieces of furniture and anything delicate. They were friendly and professional. They moved the belongings approximately 140 miles, arriving several hours later, including time for a statutory mandated half hour break. Within eight hours of arriving at the originating address they had transported and moved everything into the destination residence. We tipped the movers for their good work. The price they charged was fair and competitive. As agreed, we packed all loose, non-furniture items into boxes prior to their arrival. Since we lived nearby they allowed us to come by and pick-up as many used boxes as we thought we would need free of charge. They worked with us to make sure everything was done as planned, just as we did with them. We found them amiable and helpful at each stage along the way. There were no surprises, no "sticker shock" of unexpected last minute fees and charges. There was no last minute "up sell" of additional services. (I would recommend deciding which level of insurance you wish before the day of the move and including this in your expected cost.) I sent them an email after the move thanking both the office staff and, especially, the movers for their hard work. In general, they do the job well and honestly that they've been hired to do at a fair price. Obviously, I can't promise you will hv the same experience, but this was mine. We will likely be moving more things at a later date. My father passed away in March and we needed a mover to help pack up and clear out his apartment, with some things going locally here in MD and others being hauled up to Vermont. My experience with Blake & Sons was absolutely first-rate and flawless from start to finish. On the office end of things, we dealt with Carmen and Shannon, both of whom were extremely friendly, professional, and efficient. In terms of the move, Alphonzo and his assistant were excellent - very friendly, helpful, and careful with packing and moving out the items. Both the local and Vermont deliveries were totally smooth. Especially regarding Vermont, the delivery driver was very communicative in terms of the timing for the arrival of the items. On top of all of this, they were the least expensive of four quotes that we got. I do not hesitate to recommend them, and will absolutely use them again in the future. read more

We did two moves with Blake & Sons in Rockville, MD. Both went smoothly and actual times/charges came in under the estimates. The first crew was fine; the company reimbursed me promptly for one item that was damaged in the first move. The crew for the second move was much better! They were polite, helpful, and took meticulous care with our stuff. They were very careful not to scratch any walls in our new home despite some really tight staircase turns and narrow doorways. I once read that divorce, death and moving were the most stressful events humans endure. I'll second that. I've had some shite moves. However, Blake and Sons did nothing to exacerbate my stress during my 3/31/2014 move. The office staff was kind enough to give me quotes on separate occasions for separate move days. Their prices were competitive with all the other companies I called. I decided on Blake and Sons because another moving company I called for a quote suggested Blake and Sons since they were committed. I thought that having the competition's respect ought to count for something. The truck was early and the two man team (Howard and Jerome) started working a few minutes early but wrote down the start time that was negotiated. The men were professional, congenial and it was quite a relief that they moved my clothes on the hangers from the closet(s) into the wardrobe boxes. They wrapped my full dressers in plastic and gingerly moved all my worldly possessions from one spot to the next. Everything was covered to protect it from being damaged. The movers didn't take any liberties, they asked for instructions so to meet my preferences, they didn't take excessive breaks or work laggardly. The move took longer than expected which cost $300 more than I was quoted. However, I have never moved in under the quoted time; I anticipated this. There is a massive stress disparity between moving and death/divorce. I certainly wouldn't liken moving to having drinks in a tropical location with a hot doctor who is the "marrying type." Moving sucks. I hate it. Both my cat and I have inadvertently locked ourselves in the closet as it is hard and stressful acclimating to new digs. Blake & Sons could not be any worse of a company. I hired them through Ship-Smart to move my household items across the country and ran into so many issues along the way. First the movers that picked up my stuff did not help with the boxing process even though this is a standard service and as a result, they left without items that were supposed to be shipped. Second ship smart's processes are so deficient that they mixed up my shipment with someone else's and as a result, I wasted an entire day and had to wait almost a month before my items were finally delivered. Lastly, the items were packed at their shipping center in the worst way with no regard to damage control, leading to broken items. read more

I really try to give everybody the benefit of the doubt, but my experience with Blake and Son's was beyond unprofessional. TL;DR company cancelled on me less than 24 hours before my move when they had 2 weeks beforehand to disclose problems they had created for themselves. On May 31st, I spoke with Sharon and described the terms of my move: no big furniture, just clothes, dishes and a few small pieces that needed to be in NYC on June 15th. She gave me a quote and said that with a move that small, a same-day job would do (i,e., pack and load the morning of the 15th and deliver the same day). I had my elevator in my NYC building reserved from 5-7 pm on the 15th, which Sharon said the movers could easily accommodate by "going on a long lunch" or "taking a break". I said great, gave my credit card for the deposit, and that was that! Received another confirmation e-mail on June 8 to say everything was good to go. Then, starting June 9th, a new person, Shannon, begins to call me to say there's a problem with the move. She says it's not a job one person can do in one day and she's not sure why that was even scheduled. I try to explain that Sharon had set it up in that manner because it was such a small move. Shannon calls back the next day to say she doesn't think it can be done, and that the elevator times cannot be accommodated. I gave her more details over the phone, which she said she'd take back to her supervisor and call me back. I also offered to let movers come the day before (June 14th) to pack my stuff instead of same day, seeing as I wasn't the one who requested the same-day movers in the first place. Didn't matter to me when people came to load my stuff, I just needed to get to NYC by the 15th. Still hadn't heard anything by today, so I assumed all was good (mistake on my part). I called this morning to double check, and found out I'd been removed from the moving schedule. I was reconnected to Shannon who said she'd called and left a voicemail yesterday to say my move under these parameters couldn't be done--less than 48 hours before the move! Oh, but she called the wrong number, so I obviously never got that message. I offered again to let loaders come today, I offered to push the delivery date back to June 16th, and was flatly rejected both times. I asked for recommendations of other moving companies who could accommodate a now very last-minute request, and received none. When I voiced my frustration at being left high and dry without movers less than a day before my scheduled move, she only kept repeating that I knew this was a ridiculous request starting Friday and that I should've known based on our earlier conversations that it wasn't going to happen. Excuse me for believing the company I had scheduled weeks ago was going to go through. From May 31st-June 9th, I heard nothing; if something was amiss, why did it take them so long to tell me so? And again to definitively cancel me the day before (or 2 days before, according to whoever got that phone call)? Anyway, thankfully the other moving company I was talking to when I chose Blake and Son's was able to accommodate my very last-minute request. But I will definitely never recommend Blake and Son's to any of my DC friends. read more

Blake and Sons really exceeded our expectations with our full-house move! The quote they gave us was in the mid-range of what we were given by several moving companies, and their final bill came up just a little under what we expected to pay. The movers were on-time, hard-working, friendly and so very careful with every item they touched and packed/padded. Not a single item was damaged in the move (ironically the only thing that broke was a lightbulb, and it was my husband's fault, lol) and they kept the old home's and our new home's floors both clean and undamaged. I have already recommended them to several of my friends who are about to move. I cannot recommend this company. Their movers broke, gouged, scraped, dropped, cracked and otherwise disfigured many pieces of our furniture. In addition to the furniture the movers destroyed, they also destroyed several boxes that were marked FRAGILE. One box had a lamp that was smashed, but, even worse, was another group of boxes that contained a priceless chandelier from Venice, Italy valued at $5,500. The main stem was crushed and several of the arms and flowers were shattered. At the company's suggestion, we had purchased additional insurance up to $150,000. for an extra $750. However, after sending Blake and Sons pictures of the damage and the estimate for repairing only the furniture by a professional furniture repairman valued at $3325, Blake and Sons sent me a check for $750, which included the $500 deductible. The cost to repair the chandelier is an additional $5,500. From the damage that their movers caused to our priceless belongings it is evident that they did not wrap the furniture as it should have been and that they stuffed everything into the trucks without regard to size, shape or fragility. Obviously the pictures that I sent to Blake and Sons to prove what their movers did were disregarded by them. read more

A few years ago the floors were being replaced in our apartment and the developer hired Blake & Sons to move us in and out of our apartment. They packed everything (all the furniture, clothing, household items and art of a two bedroom apartment) and three weeks later bought it back. Nothing was damaged, nothing was missing. The crew was courteous and contact with the company was always pleasant. A few months back we took on a winter apartment in Florida. Remembering the great experience I had with Blake & Sons I called up to get a quote to move us from Arlington VA to Boca Raton FL. I wanted to use a mover who would actually drive their truck to the new location, rather than a broker. This time I was moving six or seven pieces of furniture and about 40-some boxes, including TVs, my computer, audio gear and art 1100 miles. I had a nice chat with Shannon Shioutakon, we coordinated everything and she priced out the job. Her fee was the second best price I got, but given my experience with them, I decided to pay a few hundred dollars more for the comfort level. This was probably one of the best decisions I've made in the past few years. On the day of the move the crew showed up on time and loaded the truck in about 2 hours. When I found a few other items I wanted to take, Pedro, the crew chief, carefully wrapped them and placed them on the truck. As before, everyone I came in contact with from Blake & Sons was courteous, friendly and extraordinarily helpful. On the day of the scheduled arrival I smiled as I watched as the red, white and blue Blake truck pulled up to our new digs in Boca. Two hours later the truck was unloaded, boxes neatly placed in one area of the apartment and all of the furniture in place. As before, nothing was damaged, nothing was missing. It was as near a stress-free, perfect move as I could imagine. As you might guess, I am a BIG fan of Blake & Sons Moving. I would recommend them without hesitation, you simply cannot do better. read more

A pathetic, unprofessional experience with Blake. We used both their moving and storage services. When we went to remove our furniture from their storage facility, we discovered that rodents and animals had gotten into the storage area and had gnawed and urinated all over our wood furniture. Alarmed we approached the owner's wife/office manager who dismissed our complaint and refused to accept any responsibility whatsoever. They claimed that they exterminate for rodents regularly so there couldn't possibly be rodents in their facility -- although their own storage facility foreman confirmed to us that yes, there were rodents in storage building/facility. The foreman was the only person with any honesty and integrity. Steer clear of these folks b/c if you have a complaint or want to resolve an issue with them, they flatly refuse to take any responsibility whatsoever. There are many reputable movers locally who deserve your business. But not Blake. read more

From my initial call to determine a price, to making sure all of my furniture and 50" TV would be transported safely and cleanly, I was VERY impressed with Blake & Sons. Received a call the day before my move to make sure everything was in order. I had two different drop-offs, which was not a problem at all. At 2 PM the day before our move Budget rental called to tell me the 26' truck I reserved 2 months prior to move my entire house was not available even though I had a reservation. Wow! I just used Blake & Sons for an out of state move. I called and spoke with Shannon several times asking questions and she was so helpful and easy to work with so I decided to go with Blake Movers and placed my deposit. What a great decision! The day before the move they called to confirm which put my mind at ease. Then Brian called about 30 minutes before the start time to confirm they were arriving on time which was 8am! Brian and Brett arrived introduced themselves and started right away. We then went to the storage unit where they were again so careful to wrap everything in pads secure it and work quickly. I was blown away at how quickly and carefully they worked with my stuff. The next morning in NC I received another phone call ahead of time that they were going to be early! All my stuff arrived safely at my new house and they did an amazing job unloading!! They went above and beyond and I have to say it was the easiest most stress free move I have ever had! I was actually relaxed when it was done and unpacked the boxes that were in the rooms they were marked for. The amount was what I was quoted for and I could not be happier!! At $190 per hour, this moving company is not the most competively priced but I thought - hey, you get what you pay for. Well, I paid alot and didn't get much. I had boxes clearly labeled "fragile- glassware" and the movers stacked heavy boxes filled with books on top of them. I'm still unpacking but I've already found a broken pitcher, a cracked glass tabletop, a damaged wooden bed post and a bent tv stand. As for insurance coverage on your items, when reading the fine print of the contract I noticed that the customer pays a $100 deductible to file a claim. So, they break my things and to add insult to injury, I have to pay them to get my things replaced? I will not use this company again. read more

I cannot recommend Blake & Sons enough. They were subcontracted through ShipSmart to move an apartment-full of items and furniture at the last minute. I dealt with Pedro and Mervin on the receiving end and they could not be more professional or kind. They arrived promptly after calling that they were 30 minutes out (protocol to inform the customer before they arrive) and unloaded the truck smoothly and safely within half an hour. Everything was wrapped and taken care of so nicely. They were very courteous on the unload to keep walkways safe and items neatly stacked, offering to unwrap anything I needed unwrapped. I didn't have cash on me and I was easily able to add a dollar amount to the invoice and to charge with the card on file. Both gentlemen were very understanding and gave me a business card to do so. I can't recommend this company enough. No words can truly express how impressed I was with all aspects of how they treated me during this whole moving process. I had no idea what I was doing or who to trust. Wow was I lucky cause I sure hit a home run using these guys. The woman in the office could not have been nicer or more informative. I felt like I was calling them everyday and they answered every question and never lead on about how much of a pain I felt like I was being. I was in awe of how hard the 7 men worked getting us out of the house and into storage as well as into a separate truck to be moved to our temporary living situation. The guys were so nice and polite and could not have been more efficient. The estimate I got was pretty dead on, actually a little less and the icing on the cake was all the free boxes I needed.
