My partner is drawn to Irish pubs like an Irish Whiskey fan to an Irish pub... which she is... so I guess this isn't so much a metaphor so much as an accurate statement... what do you want from me I'm not a philosopher. My point being we really enjoyed this place, it's not fancy but it shouldn't be. We wandered in as it was time for more whiskey. The music was appropriately Irish punk the bartender was attentive and friendly. In a touristy area of San Diego the Blarney Stone seems to attract a more local type of crowd. I'm not sure why this place doesn't have a higher rating but last week I had a bowl of Irish stew and fell in love. The broth was flavorful with richness from the sliced celery and spices. The meat was tender and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. I'm definitely heading back soon. Service was good and beer was cold. read more

Roaches! Roaches!!!! If you only remember one word from my review- let it be Roaches!! I so wish I had looked for reviews for this dump before I ate here. The whole experience was a train wreck so just the 'highlights': The waiter was a diva and had the shittiest attitude EVER. He took our order and then he gossiped at the bar until it was time for the bill. He never brought us refills, and when I tried to ask for some napkins - he looked right at me and just walked away. The meal itself was not that bad, until .... I ate my last bite - and a roach ran across the table!! His grand Divaness made his way back over to the table and pretended to kill it. NEVER EAT HERE! LET ME REPEAT - NEVER EAT HERE! I don't care how badly you want to sit on a patio and people watch or enjoy the weather. There are several other clean and sanitary locations to choose from. There really isn't more to say about this place. There kitchen may be the most hazardous thing I have ever seen and there is no way on God's green Earth that the Health Dept let's this place pass code. The floors are disgusting, there is a rich musty smell that envelops the entire room. Nothing has been updated in the last 20 years and I'm shocked not more things are falling apart. As for the service, it's far from even remotely tolerable. I'm not sure what's more important to the staff - working or thinking about unemployment. In regard to intelligence, that is a tough one to swallow for them all. What's more is that they are never open, which I find amazing because it is so awesomely located, but I rarely see them open and I am downtown everyday. With a location like that and if you were open everyday, there is no question that you would be rolling in the extra money and able to renovate that slum no problem. read more

Gavin! He's the best bartender ever. Gavin knew his way around the bar. I was looking for a Basil Hayden or Tullamore Dew; both were unavailable at the time. I then decided on a savignon blanc; which they did not have. Gavin did a great job directing me to another drink without making a big deal of the lack staple Irish Bar liquors. After a long evening fighting the Comic-Con crowds, anything looked appetizing. Unfortunately we chose this place solely because it had empty tables...which ought to have been warning enough. The sole good thing was their beer. The food, in a word, was aweful. The fish and chips was incredibly salty and the chips soggy and cold. The caesar salad was wilted and chicken strips was just okay, but stay away from the ranch dressing. It was waaaay too expensive and the overall ambience was poor (TV was playing "So You Think You Can Dance?"). Bottom line...stay away...run away! read more

Went to Gaslamp quarter on Saturday night with my friend, simply to just hang for one hour or so (at least that was the initial plan..) came to see this place, because we thought its the same place with the one in SF, which apparently not. But we ended up getting a little too much of Irish Car Bombs.. the ambience was good, the bartender were nice too. Came here last weekend because it was the only place that wasn't packed in gas lamp. We ordered drinks fairly quickly and some sandwiches. It took a while for the food to come out, the kitchen was backed up despite there not being a lot of customers around. The waitress was also very rude and made us feel very uncomfortable. Apparently she wasn't supposed to be serving/helping out so her questions came out unintentionally snotty and rushed - for example, she stopped by our table and asked us if she could get us anything and when I asked for water she guffawed and said, "you can go get that at the bar". Um, ok, why'd you ask? We hadnt called her over, she's the one that came up to our table. She could tell we were put off by that response and ended up bringing one glass for a table of 4. Next, when we were restless about our food (2 sandwiches and a side of fries) and asked her if she could check, she said of course and asked us if we paid already. We were super confused about that bc the only place we'd have had to order was at the bar and we assumed they automatically ring you up right then and there. When we said yes, she asked where our receipt was and we said we left it at the bar with the merchant receipt, but we could go with her to the bar to ask for it back. By now, most of the table is super annoyed with her and her demeanor and are really fired up. She explained she needed something/evidence to bring back to the kitchen. Ok, I guess that makes sense but I thought that's usually done at the get go and you just have to ask status on the food itself. To be honest, she gave off really racist vibes so I tried to privately talk to her about it but I doubt she understood. Her excuse for her rudeness was that the place was busy and she's only trying to help out by serving our table. Anywho, giving this place a one star for the waitress who came up to our table. I'm leaving 3 stars because I know during COVID pandemic restaurants are doing what they can-- they have outside dining and have given their employees the opportunity to work which is great. HOWEVER-- upon arriving to the establishment we were told to just wait around the corner and someone would be with us. We had a group of 6 and 4 other parties of 4-6 arrived after us without reservations and got seated before us. When they seated us finally they rigged up a small square table and a small circle one. Big enough for maybe 4 small people. We made do. After they seated us they didn't give us a menu and forgot about us for about 10-15 minutes before asking if we needed anything. Once she asked We didn't have the menu yet? She brought one drink menu and said she couldn't find a food menu. Once we got the menu We ordered a Cadillac margarita, purple patron margarita and a Long Island ice tea. They ALL tasted like straight kirkland brand margarita mix. The chicken fingers were so dry it was hard to swallow. I understand things are hard now but the lack of customer service and just the lack of quality in the food is a major disappointment. Not to mention, there were COCKROACHES all over the place. I get were out side but you would think they would spray the outsides before servicing food and alcohol. The waitress also dropped over 100$ in tips and when we told her she scoffed and picked it up. You should think she would say thank you. The only good thing I can say is the 1800 shots were nice and the peanut sauce from the Thai place next door that they colab with was good. read more

In 2016 my wife and I took a trip to the British Isles, featuring the great country of Ireland. In that country we experienced more than our share of Irish pubs, so when we returned to the states we'd on occasion set foot in an establishment that considered itself to be of Irish persuasion (and let's not kid ourselves, there are more than a few of those). But until coming inside the Blarney Stone, none of them felt very legitimate. As far as this place goes, if I were to blink and suddenly find myself smack in the middle of Galway town, I wouldn't think anything was amiss. Fish and chips, Guinness in large supply, Flogging Molly on the jukebox, dark surroundings, waitresses in green. All was lacking was a leprechaun. And apparently they host trivia, albeit just once a month. I could easily see this as being a suburban hangout were it not in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter District. Regrettably its location in the midst of a touristy area has effectively made it something of a tourist trap, as witnessed by the quartet of douchey individuals who came in while we were there and appeared to be dismayed by the spirits selection, all along talking on their smartphones. But, if you want an Irish experience in Southern California, this place does the trick. Food decent, nothing spectacular, but ambiance does count. read more

The bun was basically some generic grocery store version, with some plain lettuce and tomatoes. Something you would get at your standard weekend BBQ. Visiting friends wanted pub food, so we stopped in 7pm Saturday night. The bartender was too busy chatting to give us our drink order, or to make eye contact when we tried to check on it halfway through our meal. (At that time, there were maybe 8 people in there, no other pub staff.) The Thai restaurant staff took our food order, but it was a slow, painful service experience with us being in another room. The Thai food was great; the Pub food was ok. Both were reasonably priced. We had drinks after dinner at another establishment that wanted our money and was interested in service. With so many choices in the Gaslamp; I recommend looking for another place with a more even record of service. read more

St. Patrick's Day experience: it's about 7pm or so and we try to go to Fields for a Guinness and some Irish pub food. Turns out they have a $10 cover charge, so we find Blarney Stone and wander in. Found a shared bench area to sit. On our way in a sweet waitress asked if we needed to order drinks. We declined. We didn't wait long incredibly long to get our order all in and get the food/drinks back. We ordered a Guinness, a half and half (Guinness floated on cider), mozzarella sticks, and two corned beef sandwiches. The drinks were served in plastic cups. There was no head on the Guinness. (I've been to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin and gotten certified to pour, so it was pretty damn clear they don't know or don't care.) The half and half or whatever it's called (different names at nearly every bar) was not floated at all. It looked like something I try to make at home and mess up. In addition to that it is made with ANGRY ORCHID... not Magners, Strongbow, or pretty much any normal cider to pair with it. I hate complaining about things at restaurants/bars, but the whole reason I come to a bar to get a drink like that is to have it made properly. I send it back and get a Magners because that's bottled and can't be messed up. The tasted great. They were out of mozzarella sticks, so that would've been upsetting had we not seen how large our sandwiches were with fries. Although, someone upset my partner's stomach. He stopped eating about halfway through (after trying my half and half, which he said smelled rancid) and then threw up later that night. we came here with our friends after having dinner a couple of blocks away. they wanted the irish pub feel, so a bar entitled "blarney stone" with the irish flag waving proudly was perfect for the occasion. my friends ordered a round of beers, i had my ice water since i was the designated driver, and we sat and chatted for an hour or so. i must say, this place got PACKED between 10-11pm! the crowd was mostly young men and women in their 20s, so we (who were all pushing 40 if not over 40) felt a bit out of place. we sat outside on their gated patio area as it was a warm night and it allowed us to chat and people watch at the same time. pretty average bar with average prices but VERY loud music. read more

I would give this place ZERO STARS if I could. Three friends and I stopped here for a drink on a Saturday night around midnight, and were confronted by the most ancient (60+), nasty looking (possibly the female reincarnation of The Mummy) bartender I've ever encountered. She also didn't speak any English (although I'm not sure she understood any language) so when my friend asked for a cheap and strong drink recommendation, she responded with "beer?" We ended up ordering two pear ciders ($6 each) and they tasted stale, like they had been sitting in the pipes for a long time. We tried to explain this to her but she couldn't understand, so my friend just paid for it and didn't touch the rest of it. When we went to pay, one friend had cash and the other tried to use a card, but there is a $10 minimum for credit cards (which she had to use a paper sign to explain to us). Fine, so we put both drinks on the card, but the bartender took the cash with her??? and tried to give it to my friend with the credit card until we told her to give it back to its rightful owner, then she stood around and stared intently at my friend while she was filling out the credit card slip. Talk about rude and awkward. While we were there someone next to me ordered three drinks (AMF, Jack and coke???, and Guinness), took 15 minutes to get two of them, and the second bartender poured half of the Guinness and left it sitting by the taps, and Ms. Mummy finished pouring it 5 minutes later. The guy wanted a fresh beer and she refused and just kept gesturing at the glass she had. It is completely unacceptable to bring meals out at different times. The fries were limp and cold, i.e. hours old. We wave the server down again to order some Killian's Irish Red. We're out! Ten minutes later I hear the same server tell the table behind us not to order the Reuben, EWW what was wrong with the one my mom ate? And they ordered a Killian's! What? It magically appeared. My dad and I went here. We should have suspected something when a restaurant in the Gaslamp is nearly empty during Comic Con. The tables were sticky, as if beer was spilled on it and never wiped off for ages. The ketchup, salt, and pepper bottles were greasy, and never cleaned. My hands were covered in crap before I even got my meal. Everything about this place was disgusting, sticky, brown, and old. As we're waiting for our food multiple guys come into the restaurant with loads of frozen foods in bags and boxes and go into the kitchen. Not only should they be cooking fresh, but DON'T HAVE YOUR FROZEN FOOD DELIVERED THROUGH THE RESTAURANT WHERE THE CUSTOMERS CAN SEE IT! What on earth were they thinking?! I ordered a burger, and it was literally the worst burger I have ever tasted. It consisted of a frozen patty, cheese, a tomato slice, and a single piece of lettuce. The burger tasted of nothing. When I put ketchup on it, it tasted of nothing but ketchup. The french fries were cold, soggy, old, and I swear they were partly rotten. Parts of the fries were completely black! To top it off, I never got a refill on my water, and our waitress never checked on us. We asked her for the check, only to get it 15 minutes later. There's a reason it's empty even during Comic Con. Why am I a fan of this place? One, they have outdoor seating where you are able to enjoy a drink AND the crazy people watching at night. Two, they make strong drinks for a reasonable price. My friends and I randomly walked into this pub for some drinks while we were in gaslamp, but perhaps we should've read the yelp reviews first. The place was empty so we seated ourselves and waited for 15 minutes until we were acknowledge. The waitress said she'd be right back but she proceeded to help everyone else before us. It looked like the manager/bartender had come up to me to ask me if anyone had helped me and after I said no he walked away. I thought he would've at least asked us what drinks we wanted. Another 15 minutes of waiting, totaling to 30 minutes, we still weren't helped so we decided to leave to a different bar. read more

We were in on a Friday night, looking for a place that wasn't perpetrating a club scene. It was a light crowd, with a fun and entertaining guy on stage playing guitar. We had a few beers, talked with the bartenders, had a nice time without the typical downtown douchebaggery (sic?) that we often run into. Btw, the bartenders were both very nice, and idk perhaps the owners? We didn't have any food, so I cannot offer any advice on that, but this is a bar so I'm more concerned about the beer, which was typical for a bar. great little Irish pub that maintains its charm compared to all the loud and trendy bars that surround it. seats get taken up quickly, especially the outdoor seating. nevertheless, the bartenders and staff are friendly that you'll want to keep coming back for their hospitality. though the bar has a low rating on Yelp, i'd highly recommend the spot if you're looking for a place to enjoy a few brews with some friends and have some good conversations with the staff. there are even a few celebs that frequent this place during SDCC, though i won't say who since i want to respect their privacy and to also horde her for myself! during SDCC, our friends had two Irish waitresses who were superb and took care of us. plus, that Irish accent was reason enough for me to tip generously....i think that accent is my new Achilles' heel to my heart. le swoon. definitely would come back again during SDCC next year in hopes to see more cute Irish waitresses, some celeb sightings, and to unwind after smelling all the B.O., sweat, disappointment, and sexual frustration in the air at Comic Con. read more

I kind of feel bad writing a one-star review. The owners were somewhat nice to me and my friends, but I'm not sure they know what's going on with this place (also: see below re: owner's actions). It just doesn't belong among nice establishments. I'm no big fan of the Gaslamp, but really -- this place is way too crummy and disgusting to be in a nice spot downtown. The drinks don't seem to be very consistent. They under-poured for 2/3 of my drinks and for the third it was an okay pour. I'm pretty sure the owner, who tended bar that night, just does sight pours. Would you expect anything else though? The clientele. Oh my goodness. The clientele. Some total creepers hanging around that place could not make up for the two (tops) nice people we talked to hanging around there. It definitely seemed like a roofie incident waiting to happen. It took forever for them to run my card. It also seemed like the owner had problems figuring out how to charge me for two well drinks. $12, he finally decided. Was he deciding to give me a good price or was he wondering if I would protest at anything higher? The owner also took advantage of a very drunk man next to me at the bar. He straight-up lied to the guy about what he was paying for, telling the customer a pretty bold lie about the order of rounds for the girls he was with and who paid for what. The guy was wasted and stood no chance of being able to defend himself. He should've been cut off and set loose, but instead the owner lied to the guy about his bill and proceeded to charge him $48 for what I suspected wasn't a legitimate charge. Friday night in the Gaslamp, so why on Earth would you have one crappy, unhappy bartender on? Not only that but the bartender was incredibly slow and must have walked past my buddy and I 6 times before acknowledging our existence. This is the strangest bar in the Gaslamp, but we wound up really liking it and having a great time. It's an Irish pub in name only. Great for people-watching outside, never crowded, and a great respite from the clubs and crowds. We found ourselves stopping in here night after night on our vacation for the Half and Half. I don't know why I keep going here. Whenever I'm downtown, I walk past a bunch of crowded bars and restaurants and then I see this place and it's empty every time. So I always figure I will give them a chance and I have always been disappointed. The staff is rude and doesn't even look at you when you're trying to order a drink even when the bar is mostly empty. I've had stale skunky beer on more than one occasion. I'm not a picky customer. I've never sent food back in a restaurant in my entire life and I've never complained to a manager or anything. However, I do expect a minimum amount of customer service and I expect the beer to not taste like cigarettes. The only thing going for this place is that it isn't crowded.
