And just like a record breaking blockbuster can fill marquees with imitators, a newish concept in foodery (just go with the word) can infest the doors of stripmalls all over town. Though I can't blame them, why not make your claim on a slightly different variant on someone else's idea, the culinary equivalence of Rambo---but on a boat? And like every A Bugs Life has its Ants, so must we have the phrase written on so many Yelp reviews, that of "The Chipotle Of____. " I must not be able to get with The Chipotle Of pizza, as I've tried several pizza places trying to forge the pizza pallor with the pick-em fast casual concept and I have yet to be wowed. To me they are just repackaging as new something common place. I mean pre-formulated pizza by the slice or pie has been around since Moses was a child; and build-your-own is as typical as calling for delivery. So when you go in and have the manager give a machine-gun rapid spiel of the ordering process it comes off as "well duh." In the end, it is the taste of the pizza that matters. I selected Build Your Own, going with classic ( read: boring) ingredients. Ham, shrooms, pepperoni, cheese, sauce, classic dough, onions. They have a great selection of ingredients, even some more adventurous, for those that like to get wild. The pie was well cooked and came out fast. These are small single meal pizzas, the size becoming all the rage. Though well cooked they are lacking in something unique. Blaze is standard, almost mediocre. The ham was good, the mushrooms flat, the sauce decent but falling short. The crust is to bland. To be fair, at at $13 price it make a fast cheep lunch, but I wouldn't make a special trip if you are not in the area. They day I came the place needed swept and table wiped. There were too much debris and trash on the floor, plus crumbs on the tables beside me. No one came out and cleaned while I was there. I think a-ok is the right ratings. Blaze it! If you're in a rush but don't want to lose quality with your order then they'll take care of you. This location is pretty relaxed, employees are fun and happy to help. I've never heard of this place before so I stopped by to check it out and it was worth the time. The pizza is cooked in 180 seconds, comes out with the cheese just melting off. They have a long list of toppings, doesn't matter whether it's one topping or ten, the price is the same. I came here because of the free pizza they are offering today. It's currently about an hour to an hour and a half wait if you're thinking about checking it out! This place is like the pizza version of Chipotle-- there is a line of toppings in front of you to choose from, and for the $6.95 build your own pizza option you can add as many as you want! There is only one size and one type of crust which is a thin crust. For the same price, there are Signature pizzas you can choose from if you don't want to pick your own toppings. I got the Meat Eater pizza which has pepperoni, meatballs, red onion, and mozzarella. Even with the long line, once you order your pizza it is ready in just a few minutes--180 seconds according to their menu. Overall I enjoyed the pizza, good flavor and amount of toppings. I am not the biggest fan of thin crust tho, otherwise I would have given a higher rating, but I wouldn't let that deter you from coming! read more

The University District is woefully lacking in pizza options, so Blaze has as wide open market. From my late lunch today, I really hope they're successful in their current location. Everybody was incredibly friendly. (Honestly though, some were a bit *too* friendly, but that always happen during the first week of opening at any place.) The line workers explained the ordering process perfectly. The restaurant was clean and orderly, and there were more than enough staff on hand to deliver quick service. I got the Red Vine pizza, which was delicious! It could have used more heat, so I should have asked for more banana peppers or something similar. Unfortunately, it's not clear to what extent you can customize their menu pizzas, or if it costs extra. However, the pizza was cooked perfectly! I loved the fresh mozzarella and basil, and it worked great with a dash of sea salt at the end. Beverage-wise, I wish they had the new Coke machines like Burger Works had before them. Ok so I am pretty picky when it comes to my pizza but I have to say that I LOVE Blaze! I know it's a chain and I'm not too crazy about pizza chains but this is as good as chains get. My sis first took me here after a football game and I've been back numerous times since. I live in the Short North so I try to go in the summer or late December when OSU is not in session (otherwise there is no way I'm finding a parking spot nearby). For starters, the prices can't be beat. I normally just get a simple pie (cheese only) with extra sauce. It is fantastic! Their sauce is rich and hearty. They use mozzarella and Parmesan and I love the sea salt and oregano they add on top before it heads into the oven. For $5.95 there is nothing more that tastes as good and fills you up as this simple pie! The size is much larger than a Donato's personal pie. I've been able to eat half and save the other half for later. But most of the time it tastes so damn good that I overindulge and eat the entire thing (and then feel super uncomfortable for the next hour). Two downsides: first (as previously mentioned) the parking situation when OSU is in session. You can't find parking anywhere. There is a new location in Worthington that I might try out but that's not nearly as close to me. Secondly, my favorite pizza includes extra sauce, pepperoni and banana peppers. I have ordered that type of pizza at Blaze before and have not been impressed. I love when the pepperonis get crispy all around the edges and the peppers also get crispy/brown on the edges. Unfortunately at Blaze, they don't really get crispy at all so I just get pizza without them (which ends up tasting better and being $3 less!) I have also gotten the s'mores pie before and that's good too as a dessert. Although there's normally not much room left after I've scarfed down my pizza. Located within walking distance of the OSU Union, the Blaze is fast and casual. You can customize your pizza with a choice of toppings or order one of their own pizza designs. It is similar to Subway in how you order and walk around the front, telling the assembler what to put on the pizza (if you're customizing) and pay at the end. What do you get when you cross the campus area with inexpensive, decent pizza? A long-ass line, that's what you get! Never fear, this place does put the "fast" in "fast-fire'd" and your legs won't get stiff from standing in line (unless it's all just mental from noting that everyone else in line is 18 and know nothing about stiff legs). This is another pizzotle style place - go down the line and choose your toppings. The price, for what you get, is amazing - about $6 for a pizza (with whatever toppings you want). For my pep and shroom, I opted for the spicy sauce. The spice didn't really add any flavor - in fact it detracted a bit from the otherwise tomatoey goodness of the sauce by just adding a bit of fire. For my second pizza (hey, at $6 a pop, I could afford 2) I got the classic sauce and thought it was much better. The toppings were all good and the crust had those nice little char spots (very thin, not too airy, a bit chewy). All in all, I'd rank this place around a 3.5 on the pizza scale. It's certainly worth trying and the price is fantastic, but it falls just a bit short on quality when compared to some of the other fast ovens in town. read more

This place saved my day! I tried to take some visiting family to another restaurant, but they had shut down. Blaze was around the corner, and pizza is an easy crowd-pleaser. Additionally, the vegan member of my family was satisfied with their options. The interior is mostly open, with some nice corners that create a sense of intimacy when you're sitting down to eat. The layout and flow work well. The pizza really is fired quickly - in about three minutes. And it's thin crust, which I prefer. You can make your own, or choose a preset. My parents and I each ate one whole pizza, but we were hungry and the pies aren't overly large. The topping quality was high, and there were plenty of different toppings to choose from. The price is reasonable, and spot-on for the quality and quantity you receive. I could see myself eating one or two of these and it wouldn't break the bank. While I realize this is a chain, I had never visited one until we were in Columbus for the weekend. The festival ended very late and they were one of the very few places open til midnight. We arrived about 45 min til closing but we were greeted as if they just opened. They even offered suggestions for the sauce. I opted with original crust and half spicy half marinara sauce. I came here during their free pizza opening promotion, and while I'm not sure waiting almost 90 minutes in line for a 11" pizza that's otherwise worth $7 is the best use of my time, I sadly had nothing better to do (and their pizza is really really really really good). That being said, I absolutely love Blaze. Like other people have described, it's basically Chipotle-style pizza. They have a few premade styles you can choose from if you don't feel like building your own, but I think most people opt for the BYOP (build your own pie) because you can literally put WHATEVER you want on it. They're also not at all stingy with their ingredients, and I was able to ask for extra without being charged more. Speaking of toppings, their selection of toppings is so ridiculous that you'd be hard-pressed to not be able to make a pizza you'd enjoy (unless you don't like pizza, at which point there's no hope for you...). I got 4 different meats (crushed meatballs, italian sausage, grilled chicken, and ground beef), along with half their veggie toppings and an olive oil dressing. Another thing I like about this place is that you don't have to use a sauce as a base, and can just use cheese as the sauce. I find that most tomato sauces are too overwhelming in a pizza, so I opted for a mozzarella cheese sauce base instead. The pizza also only takes a few minutes to cook (it's lightning fast!), so you won't have to salivate for too long after you design your pie. Since it's thin-crust, the pizza isn't as filling as what you may find at other joints, but that just means you'll have room for dessert! My girlfriend and I just left Blaze about an hour ago. To be honest, I am shocked by the positive reviews. If I could give this place a negative rating, I would. The service we received was so poor that we are still fired up about it. Our only reason for coming to Blaze today was to support an OSU student org fundraiser. Unfortunately, my girlfriend paid before the presented the flyer. She and I both realized what had happened a moment too late, and she was visibly a little disappointed. She asked the man at the register if there was any way to reverse the transaction to benefit the organization- even though we knew it was probably too late. Instead of just explaining that it was too late, the staff member actually yelled at her. He picked up a pile of receipts- literally waving them in her face- shouting about how the system wouldn't allow him to run it back. It was unexpected, but she handled it pretty well and started stepping back from the counter. The man behind the register started shouting rhetorical questions- "You came here for the fundraiser, right? That was your only reason for coming? You should have had that coupon out the entire time!" Honestly, I was in shock. He was right, it was an absent-minded mistake, and she admitted as much, but there was NO reason for the aggression. I heard him swear under his breath as he put her pizza in the oven. I don't think this employee realized that my girlfriend and I were together, but if the yelling would have continued, he would have known real quick- I was ready to jump in and do something stupid. Other customers stopped their orders to see what was going on, but the employees behind the counter ignored the whole exchange. I got a sideways glance from the only woman who seemed to know what she was doing, but that was all. No apology.
