BLDG5 is a new high quality restaurant concept located under the Perkins Road overpass. It combines fresh ideas, fresh ingredients, and a contemporary setting in order to result in a excellent eating experience. In addition to meals served on the premises, they have a lot of prepared items ready to take home. First, let's talk about the facility. It seems to be an artistic blend of found or recycled materials and modern contemporary elements. This is especially exhibited in the the restroom (really) where the interior walls are clear to exhibit the plumbing and wiring, and also display a collection of interesting industrial items. There is a large outdoor area, which includes a roof -top seating area. The lower floor fencing seems to be made of differing scraps of architectural materials. This outdoor area can be opened to the bar area by a series of sliding doors, making it an indoor-outdoor space. Then there is the food, which is uniformly amazing. During one visit, I had a cup of their Tomato Basil Soup, which was rich and thick and fully satisfying. I followed this with a Powerhouse Salad to which I added Grilled Chicken. This was an amazingly great whole-meal salad, and the chicken was beautifully grilled, and still juicy and moist. One specialty they have are the various boards, that range from meat and potatoes to entirely vegetable based. I decided to have one of the latter, the Harvest Board, to see if it was as fulfilling as the others. I have to say it was a great choice. The roasted carrots were perfect, as were the other grilled vegetables. The house- pickled beets were really delicious. In the end I didn't miss the meat at all! I was so excited to finally make it here. First when you walk in, it oddly smells like a plastic. It's really weird. It took me back to childhood, a new doll smell. It's not like a faint hint of plastic in the air, I mean it's really strong. It was so strong it triggered my allergies and I had a sneezing fit when we were seated. Waking thru you see the place so nicely decorated. Very unique pieces on the wall, beautiful lighting, some seriously great designers were involved in decor planning. We sat in a room next to the outdoor seating area. My friend had to get up and get a drink of water for me, from our server Cheryl, but she was already pouring and getting ready to come over to us. So I'm sure we were about to be promptly greeted. Cheryl guides us thru the drink menu. I had a passion fruit Brazilian rum cocktail (even though it's my favorite drink on the planet, I cannot spell it). It was very very nice. We ordered two appetizers. I saw great reviews on the chicken karaage, so I chose that one. My friend ordered crab cakes. The crab cakes were pretty dang tasty. They came with a mini salad-as the garnish. No complaints there. The chicken appetizer needed like a snap of salt. It had an aioli and honey sriracha sauce. I'm not a fan of aioli, so I didn't have any. I'm sure that used as the dipper it's the extra kick I was looking for. Next time, I will ask for the sauces to be separated. Our appetizers came before the drinks did, but no complaints, the bar can be busy. Now on the the main event. The boards. We chose the steak and potato board and the Baja board. Both had good flavor. Full of variety. To a regular eye, it seems like a lot. To the eye of someone that's worked in restaurants all of her life, we paid $34 for deconstructed tacos. But YOLO, right. The sauces on the Baja board were amazing. The Street corn, I could have eaten a whole bowl! The chimichurri on the steak board was awesome. Both chicken and steak had great full flavors. The roasted carrots, on the steak board, were really good. The bigger pieces seemed under cooked, but the small ones, I could have eaten alone. My only complaint was that none of the items on either board, were really hot. I had the Baja first, and it was kinda like warm. After eating one taco and moving to the steak, it had no heat to it at all. On our next visit, we will maybe do one board at a time. Overall great concept. Once or twice a month we do what we call Appetizer Love Day. We believe love is what you make it and basically have a soul love Valentine's Day every month choosing to visit two restaurants that we never tried. One of my must haves, is beer on tap, tasty food cook to perfection, and if it is fusion cooking, the dish must have aspects of culture flavors. The two restaurants chosen today are Bldg 5 reviewed in this post and Jinya review forthcoming. Today is a beautiful fall day with bright skies and a lovely breeze. We entered Bldg 5 which had a cafeteria vibe. There's big restaurant refrigerators along the wall with prepared meals to grab and go. We opted to sit out on the patio taking advantage of the light fall breeze. Passing through we noticed the nice bar area. We were seated at a small table (pictured) which after being seated the table was uneven and rocked back and forth. My beautiful husband noticed a piece of cardboard balled up near the leg apparently used to stabilize the motion and tucked it back in place. Well, needless to say it wasn't a good fix but we dealt with it. Per the waiter and supported by the menu there were no appetizers featured on the menu. We ordered the Kitchen Karaage sandwich without the bread that came with two sauces. One tasted like Stein's syrup with a touch of soy added and the other was a mayo base sauce. The price was $16. There was no beer on tap either. We ordered 2 beers (Mango Cart ) for a whopping $7 per can, the price of a six pack. You read that correctly. There is no reason for alcohol price gouging. The meal was not worth $38 dollars and some change. While I sympathize with restaurants dealing with rising cost of food that has led foodservice operators to scale back on menu options, I do not agree with them charging customers more for less. How did it taste you ask? Fresh cooked chicken is hot, crispy, and tender. However, this dish taste as if it was prepared ahead of time and spent far too much time under the food warmer. It was tasteless and absent the ginger and soy flavors common in this dish. We both had two tough grayish chunks a piece and cut the last chunk in half. How in the world can you over cook what we believed to be chicken thigh chunks. Sadly still, it couldn't be more simple to make! It was only seven customers and The chef was too lazy to cook the dish per order. Would we visit again? There's a saying first impressions are lasting impressions. We were not amused, wowed, or satisfied with this dining experience. This was no appetizer love day dish. A few words of advice to the chef: Cook food to order especially if there are a few customers willing to spend money on overpriced less food portions with no darn beer on Tap . Uhmm... I can't recommend this establishment. But if you want to give it a try hopefully you have a better dining experience. Our second restaurant visit experience at JINYA coming. Another great find thanks to Yelp! A little off the beaten path but glad we stopped in for an early lunch while in town for a dive meet. Our server Joshua was very knowledgeable and attentive. Made a great IPA recommendation (Jucifer) and gave us several food choices that made it even more difficult to choose. Sat outside and it was a perfect day, nice sunny and breezy. I had the Chicken tortilla soup, flavors of Tomatoe and chili powder spiced - more like a chili soup not much chicken flavor - very unique hearty and unexpected Cajun style chicken tortilla soup, I'm guessing. The cheese melted lovely, the ingredients a tad bit too cooked for me, I prefer them a more al Dente- the tortilla crisps were seasoned and plating was thoughtful, veggies finely chopped, perhaps they make it fresh and then let it sit and simmer to soak up flavors - I wish the bread toast came out a bit crisper and warm - I loved the cocktail I had - it blended smoothly, smelled of aroma basil strongly - but not overpowered, sweet and green the cocktail runs over the basil as I sip it creating a natural infusion for the palette - the basil could've been fresher - perhaps the aged basil gave it more strength - Kids steak was so tender ( no meat glue real deal ) and fresh - perfectly cooked, marinated well - kids chicken a tad bit dry but very flavorful - the kids chips are delicious well deeply fried and hint of what I thought was lime but turned out to be lemon and seasoned - I love the market options in the store and their soy sauce was gluten free - much better flavor profile. They serve basmati rice, I appreciate that attention to detail. My son Ethan gave it 20 stars Salad ingredients were very fresh and bright in the beet salad, blue cheese was good quality, not overbearing although I prefer super stinky intense blue cheese, beats are pickled so they add a tang instead of a creamy cushion to the vinaigrette - but it works and cut the savory chili flavors off my palate in a nice contrast - the soup/salad paired well, the dressing was delicious, vinaigrette aroma - perhaps add some bacon bits? - could've used a more walnuts and I'm not sure my walnuts were candied as described on menu - I can tell taste matters as the crew is behind the counter taste testing something. Kind people, delicious clean food - we left happy and satisfied. I think my preference for intense flavor contrasts were challenged here as they let the ingredients natural flavors shine, rustic style food... So often we forget what those flavors are with over processed food, don't we? We also tried the edible cookie dough and thoroughly enjoyed it. read more

Worth the stop on a long road trip. We were about halfway through our 13 hour road trip and decided to take a minute to enjoy a decent lunch. Cheers to BLDG5 for being my new oasis in the desert. Love the vibe of the place to start. Being from Austin it felt like so many of the funky little places that used to pepper downtown and South Austin. We had a beet salad and the short rib sandwich. I'm not a beet guy but the greens and dressing were excellent. As for my short rib sandwich...amazing. It was delicious. The bread was perfect for this sandwich. Plenty of delicious beef fat to help it slide down. We will be stopping by on our way through town from now on! read more

I had a lovely lunch here. They have great food and much of it is vegan, vegetarian or gluten free or can be made one or the other. As a woman who is mostly pescatarian I appreciate this. I had the ahi tuna with quinoa, South African Piri Piri sauce, and Brussels Sprouts. So first, the ahi tuna was really good with a nice crust. I Prussian wish it had had less salt on the crust and that it had been cooked rarer (especially when I requested extra rare) but it was rare-ish. The South African Piri Piri sauce is a "roasted red pepper, jalapeños, garlic, lemon juice, smoked paprika and a touch of cayenne." The Brussels Sprouts were tasty but not crispy enough for my taste. Bldg 5 is a FAVORITE of ours! Tonight was a repeat of the Five Star experience that draws us to this place! Cheryl,our waitress, went beyond duty by working out table change in order for us to be comfortable! She was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable offering suggestions to help guide our drink and food choices. My hubbie had a cup of the Tom Kha Ghi. I suggest you pick up a quart from the freezer to take home. It is that good. I ordered a protein plate with steak. I subbed roasted potatoes for the grain. Yum!! A special addition to our night was perfect patio weather with Cam Pyle singing! Cam is THE BEST! A talented singer and musician! He has dancing fingers on the guitar and a voice range that hits high and low notes! The food here is incredible and don't sleep on the cocktails, I know they are pricey but trust they make their own in house lemonades and other infused drinks. I love the spicy Baja margaritas and the Paloma. The atmosphere is super cool too. The bartender James is really the star of the show. On a Friday morning I watched him make at least 50 drinks in the 45 min we were there. Food time is really quick here too. We never wait long. I've had the veggie plate and have added protein chicken once, shrimp another time so so good. The crab cakes are some of the best I've ever had. They do not take call ahead and they can get very busy but they told us 45 min wait and it was only 10 minutes there is a rooftop area to drink and wait and also you can sit at the bar if that is available. My only complaint is the hostesses this past Friday were quite rude and I've never experienced that there before. During this visit, I ordered the grilled shrimp protein plate with the herb roasted potatoes. All protein plates come with rustic grilled bread, herbed ancient grains, and a sauce of your choice. For my sauce, I chose the Argentinian chimichurri which was made with Italian parsley, cilantro, garlic, red wine vinegar, oregano, crushed red peppers, and olive oil. My meal was spoiled by the parking lot! As other reviewers have said parking is a problem. I will get to my meal but first let me tell you how my meal cost me $250 for a new tire. I parked in a gravel spot that was marked as a spot next to other cars. On my way home my tire pressure light came on. I have had this car less than 2 months. The next morning I discovered a large piece of rusted metal embedded in my tire. I had to go immediately to the dealer and pay $250 for a new tire. When I called Bldg5 to let them know they were understanding but told me the parking spot I parked in did not belong to them but to K Street Grill right next to them. Whoever it belongs to and even though my meal was good it left a very bad taste in my mouth and I'm not sure I will go back. Now to my dinner. Our server, Isabelle was delightful, knowledgeable, friendly, and gave us just the right amount of attention. We shared the smoked gouda, jalapeno and artichoke spread small plate as an appetizer and it was delicious. Then I had the crab cakes for my dinner. They were very good and actually were filled with good crab not just filler. I liked the remoulade served with it and the vinaigrette dressing on the greed salad was also very good. Desert was decadent and rich. I had the brownie with homemade caramel sauce. It was warm and gooey. The atmosphere was very nice and there is an outdoor patio area for seating and rooftop seating. That being said I can't afford another tire so I don't imagine I'll be going back. And I certainly won't be going to the other restaurant, K Street Grill since it was supposedly their parking area. One of my Yelpie friends would post the most beautiful plated food from this establishment on his profile and have been wanting to come here for the longest time. I finally went and now I'm hooked. I've been making an effort to come every week! With the social distancing and required masks I felt comfortable venturing out to this place! If you go on a beautiful night, sit on the patio. It's a pretty environment to hang out. This is such a great place for two or got a small group get together. The reason being because their charcuterie style board selections. From a steak and potato board to a Little Italy board. You can also make your board of food with your choice of sauce, protein, and different foodies that would complete your board. It's a little pricey but you do get what you pay for. They display your food up nicely. So far I have not been disappointed with any of my selections. My friend said she has not had a bad meal here and her favorite dish is the crab cakes. It would be nice if they had a bigger selection of wines by the glass that would complement the meal. This spot is just the cutest place ever. Stopped in for lunch during a day trip to Baton Rouge after hearing some good reviews. The outdoor seating was a big seller as I prefer to dine outside due to COVID. When we arrived there was a bit of a wait, but we were offered the option to grab a drink from the bar and there were some tables outside in the front where we could sit. As we were being shown to our table I was surprised by how large the space was, but also by how small the space was if that makes any sense, lol. We sat in the courtyard and the weather was perfect that day, so it was quite nice. I will say, they have managed to fit a good number of tables in their limited space, so if you're looking for a spot where the tables are all 6 feet apart, this spot may not ease your anxieties. I was a little nervous about it, but there was just enough space for me to inch our table a little farther from the one to the back of us so I could comfortably enjoy my meal. On to the food. I've been on a sandwich kick lately, so I ordered the Short Rib Smash. My friend got the veggie plate with potatoes and salmon. The sandwich was packed full of juicy short rib, cheese and pickled red onions. The crusty bread wholegrain bread was a great medium for the flavors and was just thick enough to stand up to the succulent rib and have me not look like a toddler with the mess I could have made. The salmon and potatoes were perfectly cooked and kind of outshined the veggies which were supposed to be the stars of the show (which were still yummy, btw). We were also impressed with our drinks from the bar and would have loved to stay and enjoy more, but didn't want to occupy a table for longer than we needed. Overall, I see why it's so popular and would definitely like to visit again, but maybe at a less busy time. read more

I travel frequently for work and always enjoy trying local spots. This was absolutely worth the reviews and high rating on Yelp!! It's located in a cool neighborhood, has excellent vibes within the restaurant, and the staff was very friendly. I sat on the patio and they had some chill live music - truly a wonderful atmosphere to disconnect from the workday. From a food perspective, it was delicious, fresh and full of flavors. This establishment is very aesthetically pleasing, both the food and the restaurant itself. My date and I got the steak and potatoes board for 2 and added chicken. All of their board have a big variety of different foods, and what BLDG5 is most known for. The harissa romesco sauce (red sauce) was my most favorite part of the meal and it was extremely addicting that I asked for more. Our total was around $75 with the tip, but I feel like I wasn't really full afterwards. I actually became hungry again a few hours later, which I shouldn't expect with paying that much for the food. Vasi with bacon jam and brie was a superb starter, and the protein plate with salmon, aji, and potatoes was tasty and filling. Stay away from the Brussels sprouts--my friend reported they weren't anything special but noted the veggie plate was very good. Drinks: Good selection of cocktails, beer, and wine. My paloma was enjoyable and my friend got a good iteration of sangria. Service: Efficient and friendly. We were in and out in an hour and the host and wait staff were helpful, provided good recommendations, and kind. Atmosphere: Loved the patio. A little bit of noise from the road, but they have done a great job with the space, and it was a joy to spend an hour outside. COVID Precautions: Large patio. I'm sad I have to update this rating from five stars to a two star rating. The first time I tried BLDG 5 was takeout, and I absolutely loved the food! Recently I went to dine-in with a large party, and the service we received was awful. The waitress mocked my friend's food allergy and had a bad attitude. She also forgot to put in my friend's order, so she did not get her food until everyone else was done eating. Honest mistake, but it did not help the experience we were already having. The food was still good; I tried the Ficelle sandwich, but their was barely any meat/brie on the sandwich. The board I shared with a friend was delicious--I loved it! I will still enjoy the food and probably order from BLDG 5 again, but it will most likely be take out and not dine-in. read more
