Having traveled to Naples over the past 15 years to visit family, I will admit that restaurants in this town have drastically improved within the last couple of years. While its cuisine has finally begun to catch up with the rest of the country, the scene still has a long way to go before Naples appears on any kind of culinary map of the Southeast. That said, the success of one of the most popular restaurants in Naples, Bleu Provence, completely eludes me. If this restaurant were in any major metropolitan area, it would have gone under long ago. Instead, to my amazement, Bleu Provence is doing so well that it has actually doubled its space. The prices are high, and the food quality is low. Last Saturday night I dined there, and each of the four specials had the SAME uninventive side dishes (mash potatoes and aspargus). The waitstaff is clueless too, and does not understand elevated level of service that is expected in higher price point eateries. The tomatoes in my cold tomato soup with avocado tasted canned. The couscous that accompanied my lamb shank had 5 shriveled, cold peppers and zucchini strewn across the the top that were supposed to pass as "grilled spring vegetables." Perhaps the reasons that Bleu Provence continues to succeed have nothing to do with the food. Its location in the old part of downtown Naples, near the Dock, is very central. Its decor is quaint, and typifies an American's view of Provencial France. So, if you go to a restaurant for the food, don't go here. There are other, better choices in old Naples. read more

Goat cheese salad.....Fabulous! We tried Bleu Provence for the first time this past October and were not disappointed. Our waitress was more than helpful, she explained the menu, made recommendations, followed-up, and even made the desserts we ordered extra special for our anniversary. I lived in Naples for over 6 years and had a terrible first experience at this restaurant. Gave it another try last week and it was AMAZING! After coming back from France it was a good edging to the real cuisine. Bread was good. We had escargot and the special. Our waitress was really great. Actually did not come up to me to ask how things were going when my mouth was full... Thank you! Plus - French wine list in Half bottles - oh baby. That really impressed me. Seating inside is like a Hamptons style living room with comfy woven chairs and striped cushions. Most of the patrons kind of fit that chinos and boat shoe theme too... It's quiet, good place to have a cozy conversation over dinner. I recommend this place! read more

Sadly we were not that impressed with this restaurant. When we arrived 10 mins early for our reservation the young girl at the front told us that we could be seated in 8 minutes since that was the time of our reservation. After looking around as they had a lot of open tables we asked if we could be seated early and if our table was ready. She responded with "it doesn't work that way". They have a very extensive wine list which is great but the food and service was not up to par. We were constantly looking for our waiter for things. Also, the food was ok but not the level that I expected for the price you are paying. We sat in the back outside which was beautiful but very dark and hard to see our food and menu. Had a great evening - very nice atmosphere, crisp & professional service and really good food. My wife and I enjoyed the evening special (Mahi Mahi in a lobster curry sauce) followed by the crepe suzette for desert. I had moderate expectations about the food due to some reviews and was rather blown away by how good my meal was. I had the black cod special and it was divine. Not just good but excellent. The bread was great and a little different. The service was warm quick and genuine. The wine list overwhelming but they helped my guest choose. The ambiance is lovely. Valet a huge bonus. We had a very nice romantic date at Bleu Provence this past week. Everything we had was consistently delicious, if not completely out of this world. The waiter was very friendly, but he seemed like he might be new at his job. Just a little uneven, but as I said friendly, which I'll take over super slick and unpleasant. We shared the escargots which were deliciously soaked in butter and garlic, as expected. I had a braised lamb shank for dinner which was really tender and decadent. I could have had a small fraction of the shank and been quite satisfied! The cous cous that accompanied it was not that great. We had a molten chocolate cake for dessert which was also excellent (but I don't think I've met a molten chocolate cake that I haven't liked.) Overall it was a nice experience and I would return. read more

A very attractive restaurants edge of downtown Naples. Bleu Provence is a thoughtfully placed French establishment with a warm environment and great service. Pulling up you are treated by a valet person quickly servicing you with a ticket and opened doors. Walking in the ambiance screams sea food with the deep blue colored walls and white trimming, sort of like a Greek or Mediterranean restaurant would. The hostess station placed right on entrance greet you with a smile and walk you to your table. The menus wasn't impressive with a mixture of ethnic dishes, some French some not. Service started with a drink order and a warm baguette accompanied by olive spread and sweet soft butter. Great olive spread might in add, would have liked the bread slightly more firm crusted as it tasted slightly undercooked in texture. I opted to order the escargot and the lue de mer (not sure if that's right) Mediterranean Sea bass . The escargot was good but nothing impressive, lacked a certain garlicky-ness to it, I feel. The fish entree was plated nicely, two skin on filets on top of asparagus and mashed potatoes. The fish was tender and tasty as was the rest of the dish. The sauce on the plate was creamy and slightly on the heavy side. Service was always around and checking in. I would absolutely recommend the restaurant and will consider trying the rest of the menu. Prices are reasonable at $10-15 an app, 25-$40 an entree, most in the $30 range. I'm not sure if the outside seating is by the water, but if it is, big brownie points. Keep it up le Bleu! read more

I'd been meaning to give Bleu Provence a try for years. I finally did recently. The setting is away from the center of Old Naples action in an attractive, quiet neighborhood. The establishment itself has a pleasant, formal, yet comfortable setting. The dishes are mainly classical French. Visually, the chef does an outstanding job in composing each dish. Our pompano was fine as was the slow cooked pork shank. But memorable? No. The house smoked salmon with citrus sauce appetizer was abysmal, with the flood of hyper-tart citrus completely overwhelming the fish. Service was excellent and attentive. They have a very impressive wine list. Take advantage of their early dinner specials (5-6pm) to save on the pricey offerings. I finally made it to Bleu Provence. But will I go back? I wish I could write a more positive review as this restaurant was recently voted the best French restaurant in Naples........but I can't. We were seated at 5:45, water glasses on the table were filled and we then sat waiting for a server for over 25 minutes. Finally my wife got up and went to the front desk and asked if the restaurant wanted us to leave as we had been sitting with no service for way too long. The problem appeared to be bad management as the server wasn't aware that our table was assigned to her. When the server finally came by there was no apology for the slow, poor service. The food was ok, good, but the bad service set a lousy tone for the whole meal. I got the port shank which was an ample portion in delicious sauce, but the accompanying vegetable and starch on the plate were missing in action. My desert was a chocolate cake that sat in a runny pool of sauce. Overall the meal was a disappointing experience. Restaurant management better get their act together. read more

If you love sea bass and good wine, then this is the place for you. The arugula salad was fresh and tasty. But I was disappointed with the cobia fish. The sauce was too thick for the fish and the vegetables were lost in a lumpy pile. The ambiance is very nice. We loved our server, Linda, who was very professional and knew the menu very well. Though the menu is not avidly French, it's the best French cuisine I've found in the Naples/surrounding area... thus far. Waiter kept spelling out the whole menu for us for some reason, but it's cool, he was nice. And I don't really mind, sometimes it's nice hearing their take of dishes anyway. We usually stand out like a sore thumb at most of restaurants we go to because we're much younger than the 90% of guests who are generally over the age of 75. Thoroughly enjoyed the burgundy escargot, duck confit, and crème brûlée. Two in our party ordered the sea bass and thought it be be good mostly, but the soggy skin was a deterrent. Had our 3rd dinner here tonight and I would say it was just ok and if not for my daughters enjoyment of her dinner I would have given it 2 stars. The English pea gazpacho which I had last year in November was too thick. The rose recommended by our sommelier as crisp and minerally had a great start but a disappointing finish and my steak although medium rare plus was tough on the outside with little flavor as was the asparagus that accompanied it. The 2012 Gigondas I ordered with our main courses was relatively flat and uninspiring. It's a great restaurant and I know they can do better but for $500 for dinner I was not impressed. My family and I had dinner here a couple of weeks ago after a wedding, and the food and service were fantastic. Our reservation was for 12 people, we ordered plenty of appetizers, sides, mains, and wine, and everything was delicious. We originally reserved the small private room called the Wine Cellar, which was beautiful and seemed like it would have been great, but the table was a high-top and my grandparents would not have been able to get in and out of the chairs or sit comfortably (it's hard to see that from the pictures on the website). We brought this to the staff's attention, and they quickly set up a table outside the restaurant on the sidewalk right outside of the Wine Cellar so that we were the only table out there. Even though we were basically in the parking lot, it was relatively quiet, especially compared with the outdoor space on the other side of the restaurant that was full of tables and seemed much noisier. The service was great all night, the food and drinks were perfectly paced, and we all had a wonderful evening. I would highly recommend a trip here for a nice night out or special occasion. read more

First time at the restaurant last Saturday, two couples. Service was pretty good and generally attentive. I had the mushroom soup of the day, and it was served cold. I brought this up to the server and the bowl was replaced with another that was so hot I couldn't eat it for many minutes. This slowed the meal for the others in the group, but didn't slow the food delivery. Mains were brought out while apps still on the table. I ordered their Coq Au Vin, a simple dish of chicken and vegetables cooked in wine. It was abominable, overcooked where the skin was almost black, tasteless, dry, and cold. I am fairly certain this was remediated from the freezer and poorly microwaved. Vegetables were black mush, and everything flavorless. Cannot imagine any chef or kitchen supervisor looking at this dish and letting it out the door. Still in shock that any restaurant claiming to be French served anything like this as it was sediment not fresh cooked food. We absolutely love the wine list here. Its outstanding honestly. We often stop in for foie gras (my personal favorite food) and are always pleased. Quality and consistency is key for me. What can I say except that this is THE place to go for French food in Naples. Actually it is one of the best places to go for any cuisine. When people come into town and want fine dining this is one of my top recommendations. Whether you are talking about the food, wine or ambiance it is absolutely exquisite. My personal favorite dish is the Duck Leg Confit. Duck is a difficult dish to get right and is really a testament to a chef's skill. Well, I have yet to taste a better duck dish than here at Bleu. Succulent, with flavors that explode. And this is one of many of my "favorite" dishes here.
