The space is actually three drinking and dining establishments with a shared kitchen. If you sit in the bar, you can have items from either menu. We are at the Blk Shp. The Blk Shp is the more intimate dining room, with a lovely wood burning fireplace and several conversation pit style dining areas to relax with the small group of friends. The menu has Spanish- and Mediterranean-inspired tapas and small bites. My friend and I came for lunch, shared two tapas and had a lovely time. We'll come back with our husbands next time, and try more menu items. The Red Hen side is more open and the menu is different. I'll come back and try this, too. read more

I really enjoyed the short ribs! They were probably the best out of everything! The garlic shrimp was also really good! The octopus was okay, taste a little burnt. The flatbread was probably the least favorite. I felt like it needed another kick, maybe something sweet like honey with it. Service was nice though. Good vibes. read more

My wife and I found this place by accident. And are we happy! We have always enjoyed a tapas restaurant and this one is a hidden treasure. Lots of selections and all of it delicious. The portions were much larger than expected which makes it a bargain. They have a tremendous selection of whiskies thanks to Andrew behind the bar. And a loud shoutout to a waitress Heather! Who would have expected incredibly complex and well spiced tapas in this tiny southern Jersey town? We certainly didn't! The pork tacos were just stupendous as were the Spanish potatoes (olives and tomatoes and garlic and Smokey paprika, oh my!) the chicken kababs too: amaze! Skip the Octopus. Otherwise fantastic. And, in a truly classy way, Elizabeth the owner chef presented herself to front of house and interacted in meaningful ways with each table. Went here for dinner on a Monday night. Didn't have to wait for table. Very intimate setting, not a huge place. Had a few sets of couches where we sat, very comfortable. We wanted to order the whole menu but ordered at least 12 of their tapas. My favorite were the garlic parm pork wings, ceviche, octopus, and hanger steak! One of the best pieces of steak I've had. Ordered four out of the five desserts and they were all delicious. Churros were my favorite. The highlight of our night was our waiter Xavier. He was super friendly, very personable, and made us laugh all night. I'll definitely will be returning. read more

We have now been twice. The first time we visited BLKSHP, was a Tuesday, around 730/8pm. It wasn't packed, but it was definitely popular for a Tuesday Night. We had nothing but praise for the place from the time we were seated, through when we got home. The amount of food you get is dangerous. For the price, its well worth it. That's why its dangerous, you over order and slowly your bill becomes more and more high, before a large bill sneaks up on you. The dining room is smaller, but its expected for the location, an old renovated building. The music is a little off, and loud, but its easy to not pay attention to it once your food arrives and you begin eating. Now, to the food: the food was either superb or just not right. We ordered a good variety of food, to get a good feel for the menu, and everything we tasted was either on point or not something we'd order again. The steak tip pastries, jumbo wings, garlic shrimp, and Hanger steak, all hit the spot. Spot on descriptions, cooked perfectly, and seasoned great. Each one highly recommended. However, we did order the Mussles (cold, in a weird mixture of celery and carrots in a cold broth) and Pork Tamales (way too wet, cold salsa, lukewarm meat, extremely spicy meat, and bland grits). And neither thing would be recommended. Both had horrible descriptions, not indicating that they would be either cold, or spicy and both dishes were just not enjoyable. The steak tip bites were amazing. 4 stuffed pastries with melty cheese, and perfectly seasoned steak chunks. Enough to actually enjoy AND bring some home. This bring us to our second visit. Honestly, this is where the score drops. I am going against my better judgment (3 stars) primarily because i always give a place 3 tries before i either never go again, or i keep coming back. This was the first negative of the 3 tries. We visited on a Sunday and the place was dead. 2 other tables (one getting ready to leave, and one eating. This time, we had 4 adults and 2 kids (youths aprox. 11&13) we were raving about the food and place in general, and they sat us at the couch table. This was where things began going down hill. The couches are entirely too low and the table even lower. This made the entire meal uncomfortable. We asked about moving and they said the only options would be to go to the corner table and it "might be crammed." Honestly it would've been more comfortable than the table we were at, but we decided to continue at the place they recommended. Moving on... When we ordered, the food took entirely too long. Our initial visit, the food came at a perfectly timed pace. Not all at once, and not too slow or fast. This time however, some of us got and ate all our food before some of us even got the first dish. I understand its Tapas, and i understand it is a shareable and unmanageable time frame for dishes to be delivered, but it felt weird that pork tamales and jumbo wings came before a Caesar salad, and sweet potatoes. All our dishes were good again, but the timing of the food just seemed off. Also, the Steak tip bites shrunk. The initial visit was 4 bites, and this time we only got 2. With 1 other table seated, and the dishes we ordered, it made no sense why some things came out and other took entirely too long. For instance, we ordered the Red Lentil curry, and it was the last thing to arrive, after all other dishes were eaten and cleaned away. The weird part was, we mentioned it to the waitress, and she made a comment like "oh its still being cooked" but we could tell it was forgotten. Mainly because it was brought out a couple minutes later (almost indicating she went in the back, and they rushed it out). We ordered a couple drinks, but the majority of the table ordered water. Our cups were dry for most of the time. It wasn't until she came back a little over half way though the meal, we were finally given a pitcher of water to refill our own glasses. Over all, the second visit definitely felt like a completely different dining experience. And not for the better. We definitely would NOT recommend going in a group larger than 4. Seriously not a place to bring kids (mainly ones that aren't interested in exploring different tastes or types of meals). And i would really not recommend the couches. If you have to, break your group up and sit at tables. It will change the experience significantly. Over all, we really do dig the place and will absolutely be giving it another try. We had heard the menu was changing (after our first visit) but it was the same one 3 weeks later, kind of disappointing. But as stated before, my motto is to give a place 3 tries. And at this point, (at the time of this writing) it's tied: 1 good 1 bad visit. So, hopefully our 3rd visit changes in a good way so we can keep coming back. read more

Finding outstanding local South Jersey restaurants is a mission of mine and the Black Sheep in Swedesboro is certainly one of the best! The atmosphere is chic and inviting. It is an intimate place for date night and spacious enough for a group of friends because you can easily still have a conversation. The staff is courteous and attentive without feeling rushed. The menu has a marvelous European flavor to many of their dishes. We had several small plates that were delicious and very filling. One of my favorites was the eggplant chips. All the cocktails are done with thought and detail. We were celebrating so I had my first Cognac French 75. Marvelous! The chef came out to met us as well which I really appreciate. Even their desserts top the charts for me. (there is an adorable ice cream shop next door if your prefer that) Outside has a fire wall and cozy seating. Food and drinks were good in the beginning, I had no complaints! Ordered the chicken kabobs and the chicken was mushy I could mash it with a fork. I hate to return things but had to because I wasn't going to eat it. The chef and manager both were very defensive stating the chicken was made that morning and they were confused as to why I sent it back. The manager stated they wouldn't refund me the full price because the meal was already made. As a paying customer, the management could have handled the situation much better. read more

Just had a very long , slow meal at Blk Shp. I ordered the grilled octopus and it was warm at best. The sticky ribs were good and the steak empanadas were tasty. The service was brutal. When we arrived, we were the only diners in the restaurant and it took our server 20 minutes to bring us a glass of wine and a bottle of beer. Unfortunately, it continued to go down hill from there with the lack of service. I am so very disappointed with my dining experience and will not be returning. read more
