I understand using a QR code to place your order. It's not my preferred dining experience, but I can accept that's how the restaurant operates. What bothers me is being asked to choose a tip before I've received the service. I'm given options like 10%, 15%, 18%, or 20%--but how am I supposed to know what level of service deserves 10% versus 20% when the service hasn't happened yet? If I choose 10% and the service is excellent, I may feel like I should have tipped more. If I choose 20% and the service is poor, I feel like I've overpaid. Ironically, this system makes me more likely to choose a conservative tip every time. I'd much rather have the option to tip after the service is provided, when I can actually evaluate the experience. My recommendation: keep the QR ordering if you want, but move the tipping option to the end of the meal, after the service has been provided. That would make tipping feel more fair and meaningful. read more

Unfortunately, we did not have a great breakfast experience at Blu Jam Cafe. There is a waitlist QR code to join outside that said our table would be ready in 15-25, then we waited for 30+ minutes. We asked for indoor so we understood that anyone sitting outside would go first, but what wasn't cool was seeing people who walked in after we had already been waiting get seated inside. It was super chaotic because no one knew how to order since you either have to order via the QR code on your table or at the register, so the manager had to step in and assign roles to everyone. FYI it's additionally confusing because there are no servers and yet they still have the workers run around delivering the food/drinks/etc. No hate at all to the workers since they are overworked and wearing many different hats, but this system just created a very frustrating breakfast experience. We were hoping the food would make up for this but unfortunately when I received my Blu Jam Benedict, the eggs were completely cold. The table next to us also had the same issue with their meals and sent back their food. Really want to give a shout out to the manager, Wilson, who worked very hard to make this experience better for us. He had a new one made for me and when I couldn't eat that one either because it still tasted off, he was able to refund my order. He was also so kind and very understanding to us throughout. If you're heading to Blu Jam, come prepared with two qualifications: (1) a healthy appetite and (2) decent tech skills. The dining experience has changed quite a bit. Ordering is now done through your phone, or, if you're like me and prefer human interaction, you can walk up to the counter and place your order there. Unfortunately, the traditional waiter-service (although there was a bottle of water on the table) experience is gone, which took away some of the charm that restaurants used to offer. For me, that was a bit of a disappointment. Ironically, I still found myself tipping the cashier. As for the food, there were some highlights. My wife's avocado toast was excellent--fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. My chilaquiles were tasty as well, but not without issues. The eggs were cooked over easy and were much runnier than I would have preferred, and the chicken portion was surprisingly sparse. Came here during a week day morning and it was fairly crowded! We were seated right away and explained that there was no traditional wait service but instead we could scan the QR code and order through there or go back to the host stand to order. The place is cozy, rustic and very family friendly with kids drawing/artwork displayed throughout. They also have a nice patio seating option, but it was a bit cold the day we went. You can still request for syrup. The orange dream shake is ridiculously good. It tastes exactly like an orange dreamsicle but the texture is so smooth and creamy. I really recommend this drink! It's a little pricier but worth it! The churro French toast is also good and they cut those into strips. I prefer the og though. Extremely fragrant, flavorful and creamy. Strong notes of lavender with the right amount of earl grey, vanilla and honey. I was HOOKED. Breakfast panini was good as well. The potatoes were crispy but bland. Food wise, everything was lacking salt but the tabanero hot sauce did justice to add so much flavor to the panini and potatoes. Panini was beautifully toasty and extremely filling. Ingredients is very healthy and clean which may be why its was lacking so much salt.
