I remember learning the Tuen Ng story - here is where the story gets muddled - a depressed poet suicides by jumping into the river. Villagers threw rice dumpling into the water AND made noise on the water so the fish don't eat him... actually I am sure my story is mixed up, so please consult your local Chinese mythologist. So it is even a surprise to myself that I am now one of them dragon boat paddlers... those we're no longer concerned about drowning poets or man eating fish. I was introduced to this club via a friend who hasn't had much luck with some of the other clubs in the Bay Area. Diesel Fish is, by reputation, one of the most social and welcoming teams in the California Dragon Boat Association. I have only been going for a few months, but am find myself picking paddling up very quickly - as well as having met some awesome people along the way. The Fishies has a team of dedicated, helpful coaching staff as well as teammates of all levels to help you along. An Evite is sent for each training - Tue and Sat, with Thu for advanced paddlers - so there is no such thing as 'not remembering to go'. Dragon boating is a physical work out, and anyone who currently has some sort of fitness regime will have no problem warming up to it. Along with the support from teammates and coaches - I can honestly say I look forward to water time after work on practice days. The paddling takes place at Redwood City - I live and work in SF, and have no problems joining a car pool to practice (teammates come from everywhere). There is always dinner planned after practice... never any pressure to join for dinner, but its always welcoming when you go. So my thoughts? Swing by a Diesel Fish practice and try for yourself:) PS - there's also the occasional 'Boat Race' practice on weekends... but THOSE are purely optional;)

No. (I know how to stand in a pool with a fancy drink) Do you need to be athletic? No. (I'm not!) Do you need to be _____? No. Just be yourself, and come on by. I started on 1/6/2012 (it was a little cold that day) and have been paddling since. I thought I'd give it a try after having seen a race a few months before at Treasure Island. I'm so glad that I tried it out! There have been ups, there have been downs. But I've made a ton of great friends, seen some real athletes, and challenged myself to get better. Dieselfish is first and foremost family. Oh, and I now have a gold medal from an international competition race. Sweet. ;) Come on out and give dragon boating a try!

Is it the level of dedication that's shown by its team members? Or is it merely the medal counts? There are probably multiple answers to this question. For me, I love this team because of its inclusiveness. Let's face it: Not all of us are born with an athletic talent. For someone like me, I've always been on the sideline of any sports event as a spectator rather than a participant. And as a true foodie, your chances of finding me at a buffet is about 1000x higher than watching me compete in any non-food related races. So, for a person like me to even have a spot on a team at all is something to marvel at. Not only did BAD take me in with open arms, it's given me the opportunity to continually learn about sportsmanship, camaraderie, and workout discipline. I find it amazing that my teammates are from a diversity of backgrounds and ages. It's humbling to have a chance to practice with and learn from those who are at the master level (40 years old+), some of whom have even competed at the international races. Members on this team range in age from as young as 18 year old to the hush ages that I have yet to discover. In my opinion, that's a very positive aspect since it gives everyone an equal opportunity to participate. One of the other main reasons why I love my team so much is that BAD is just as food-motivated as I am. After most practices and races I've gone to, there's yet to be a time when food isn't somehow involved. I mean, what could be more amazing for a foodie like me than to be a part of a team that's after my own heart? In fact, I love it so much that I'm willing to endure the traffic-up-the-heezy drive all the way from East Bay to Foster City multiple times a month just to attend the practices. So, do you want to be part of this awesomeness? Come and check us out at one of the 10:30AM practices on Saturday and see it for yourself. And, as a disclaimer, this isn't a team where we train actual dragons or anything remotely close to Dungeons and Dragons, so set your expectations accordingly.

As the founding team of dragon boating in the Bay Area, it's hard to stay away from the roots of this team. Even rival teams are joining forces with BAD to do good/well at races around the world. One of the strengths of this team is how it spans the age ranges to bridge the gaps with a camaraderie to support each other and help grow the sport for the good of the community. Even a part of me misses the chant, "Girls gone BAD!" So, check out this team for yourself to see how BAD it truly is in the best sense of the word =b

I showed up 5 minutes early and instead of focusing on onboarding or safety, the staff prioritized forcing me to create a marketing account and hand over my email before class. Nobody asked about **my knee pain** or offered workout modifications like Basecamp or Burlingame Fitness did. I was thrown into a dark room mid-class with no idea where my station was, what weights to use, or even how to start(!) the treadmill, while the oversized class made it impossible for the instructor to notice I was struggling. I had to stop multiple times just to change weights and restart. Change and restart. In the end, I lost the class credit and time. The whole experience felt like corporate lead-generation and profit mattered far more at Barry's than the safety and success of new members.

The workouts are varied and challenging. Each day of the week is dedicated to a different part of the body (legs, upper body, core, etc.). The coaches are motivating and great at both correcting form and offering variations for moves that may be difficult for people with knee or other issues. Shout out to Coach Euni! Her classes are always the most intense and leave me feeling spent in the best possible way! The front desk staff are incredibly friendly and make an effort to learn your name so they can greet everyone personally. Great gym! Highly recommend!!
