I showed up 5 minutes early and instead of focusing on onboarding or safety, the staff prioritized forcing me to create a marketing account and hand over my email before class. Nobody asked about **my knee pain** or offered workout modifications like Basecamp or Burlingame Fitness did. I was thrown into a dark room mid-class with no idea where my station was, what weights to use, or even how to start(!) the treadmill, while the oversized class made it impossible for the instructor to notice I was struggling. I had to stop multiple times just to change weights and restart. Change and restart. In the end, I lost the class credit and time. The whole experience felt like corporate lead-generation and profit mattered far more at Barry's than the safety and success of new members.

Her classes are always the most intense and leave me feeling spent in the best possible way! The front desk staff are incredibly friendly and make an effort to learn your name so they can greet everyone personally. Great gym! Highly recommend!!

I'm a wheelchair user and had been a member at Primetime for a couple of years. The equipment suited my needs well enough. However, the elevator began malfunctioning with increasing frequency -- breaking down multiple times a month -- to the point where I was once stuck inside it. On other occasions, I made the trip to the gym only to be turned away because it was out of service. Since all the equipment I rely on is on the second floor, a broken elevator effectively meant no access for me. The real issue wasn't the maintenance failures -- it was how management handled them. After several days of trying to reach the club manager, I finally got him on the phone. I made a simple, reasonable request: could they notify me when the elevator was down so I wouldn't make an unnecessary trip? Without any hesitation, he told me this was a "liability" for them, cancelled my membership effective immediately, and hung up. No acknowledgment, no apology, no discussion. I understand that equipment breaks down. What I don't understand is treating a paying member's accessibility concern as something to be discarded rather than addressed. I'll let you draw your own conclusions -- I just wanted to make sure this experience was on the record.

Let me count the ways how much I miss and love Equinox…read more Yes, I know--it's a high-end gym. But you truly get what you pay for. I was a member of this location for over a decade, and since moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, I can honestly say there is nothing quite like it. The nearest one to me now is in Atlanta, and I still miss the San Mateo club regularly. This location has everything you could possibly want in a fitness facility--and then some. The Fitness Floor Downstairs is a beautifully air-conditioned workout space designed for people who are serious about exercising. No distractions, no crowds hovering by the windows--just a clean, focused environment. You'll find: * Full weight training equipment * Recumbent bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills * Dedicated spin, Pilates, TRX, and group fitness studios * A large open stretching area with foam rollers * Cold, filtered water stations throughout * Staff available for spotting if you're training solo It's efficient, professional, and thoughtfully designed. Locker Rooms & Amenities The locker rooms feel more like a boutique hotel than a gym. They are consistently spotless and fully stocked with: * Plush towel service * Spacious showers with teak benches * Steam rooms infused with eucalyptus * Complimentary razors, Q-tips, and personal care items * Premium Kiehl's products It's luxurious, yes--but also incredibly practical. You can comfortably get ready for work, dinner, or travel without feeling rushed. The Rooftop Pool One of the standout features is the heated rooftop pool. It has multiple lap lanes, cabanas, and water aerobics equipment, and it truly feels like a mini country club in the middle of downtown San Mateo. The pool is heated year-round, which means you can swim in any season--something you quickly get spoiled by. They even provide sunscreen from Supergoop!, along with full towel service. It's those little details that make the experience feel elevated. Classes, Spa & Services The class offerings are extensive and easy to manage through the app. Signing in is seamless--just scan your phone and go. Highlights include: * Yoga in a beautiful bamboo studio with HEPA filtration and ceiling fans * Pilates (available as private, duo, or small-group sessions) * A full-service spa on the upper level * A juice bar and retail shop featuring premium fitness apparel Everything feels intentional, polished, and well-maintained. Location & Convenience The club is located right in the heart of downtown San Mateo, making it incredibly walkable. There are restaurants, grocery stores, and cafés nearby, including one of my favorite bakeries and specialty markets. Parking is also surprisingly easy for a downtown location: * Two-hour validation * Surface lot, garage, and rooftop parking options That convenience makes a big difference in daily use. Value & Membership Yes, membership can be expensive. However, many employers offer corporate discounts, which can make the cost more manageable. In my case, the value absolutely justified the price because I used the facility regularly and took advantage of the amenities. Even when I relocated, canceling my membership was straightforward and professional--no pressure, no hassle. Bottom Line Equinox San Mateo set the standard for what a fitness club should be: clean, thoughtfully designed, service-oriented, and genuinely enjoyable to use. If I ever move to another city with an Equinox, I will join again without hesitation. Because at the end of the day-- life is short, and you should live well.

The staff are…read moreconsistently friendly and welcoming, the crowd is respectful, and the location and hours are very convenient. However, I can't give more than two stars unless management seriously improves equipment maintenance. Several machines have had "Out of Service" stickers on them for at least six months, with no visible progress on repairs. In some cases there are only one or two of those machines in the entire gym, so when one is broken for months, it becomes very inconvenient for members who rely on that equipment. On top of that, some of the existing equipment is clearly aging (frayed cables, worn components, etc.). What makes this more frustrating is that the gym offers a premium membership tier that includes access to the hydro/water massage bed, but that has also been out of service for a long time. Even more concerning, the water fountain and bathroom have both been out of service multiple times. That's a basic facility issue. Members need access to drinking water and restrooms during workouts. Meanwhile, the gym sells bottled water at the counter, which feels especially frustrating when the fountain isn't working. On a few occasions they even had to bring in a porta-potty outside the gym, which says a lot about the state of the building facility. Again, I genuinely want to rate this gym higher because the staff and community are great. If management commits to properly repairing and maintaining the equipment and facilities, I would absolutely be happy to update this review and increase the rating.

This review is beyond late. Sorry for the length of this review, there are simply too many…read morewonderful things about Energy and I wanted to share in detail for those trying to navigate proper basketball training for their daughter in the San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, San Carlos, Belmont & surrounding cities. It is hard to describe the "energy" the coaches bring to this team of girls. Coach Dave, founder of Energy, is the heart & soul of this wonderful organization. His coaching staff and everyone who knows him raves about his character and work ethic. He's the type of person who will go out of his way to help those around him, even if his own plate is overflowing. Energy basketball is an all girls training league for 3rd-12th grade. The grades are split up 3rd-5th & 6th-12th. We call the 3rd-5th group the "younger side". The coaches are split up strategically to help balance the energy & needs on the different sides. The coaches on the younger side are a bit more gentle and they encourage the girls softly (but still with just the right amount of toughness) because 3rd grade is young and the fun aspect still needs to be very much present for them to be engaged. Then, you have the coaches on the "older side" (6th-12th), like Coach Brittany, Coach Sam, & Coach Anthony who are perfect for the older, more experienced girls who take the game a bit more seriously. However, don't get me wrong.. there are definitely younger players who take training seriously and sail past their peers with regards to skills and talent. The coaches at Energy see this potential and determination in players and will move girls up, as needed, to ensure they are always "training up" & being challenged appropriately. My daughters have been training with Energy basketball for a little over a year. Both of them went from not enjoying basketball to looking forward to their bi-weekly training sessions with Energy. Each training session starts with a quick dynamic warm up where the girls will chat with a friend while going back and forth on the court to stretch, in order to prevent injury & to help the girls get ready for training. Next, they run different drills & work on skills, ball handling, etc. throughout the season and end each session with a scrimmage. The last thing they do is gather in a circle and award one player on the younger side, one player on the older side, and a coach as the night's "Energy giver", the person who radiated positive energy towards themselves and others by giving high fives or saying encouraging things. Energy basketball has a motto: Attitude & Effort (being two things you can control on the court) There is a ridiculously fantastic coach to player ratio. There are some nights where there are 4 players per coach. The girls get a ton of individual attention which is great for their development because coaches are able to correct things on the spot or add a layer of difficulty for a particular player who seems to have mastered the current drill. If a player is really struggling to keep up or learn something, a coach will pull that one player aside and teach them separately turning the group session into a 1:1. The icing on the cake: Energy trains at Crystal in Belmont & Hillsborough. Both locations are clean, brightly lit, with bathrooms nearby, seating for parents to stay and watch, and my son's favorite part is that he never has to clean his shoes at the Hillsborough location because the court is simply that clean. One of my personal favorite things about Energy is they always play music. Statistics have shown music will push a player beyond their usual limits by giving them a boost in energy, pun intended. Doesn't hurt that I like their music selection and chosen level, not too loud but just loud enough. Another really amazing thing is that I've never seen a coach on their phone unless they are at the bench purposefully taking a break from interacting with kids. Unlike the summer camp with Warriors, Esface, or the casual games through Next Level. I've seen coaches eating while reffing and being on their phone within a span of 10 minutes with Next Level at Hillsdale high school. The director of the Capuchino all girls location is actually quite good and I would recommend that location to girls. Parents of girls: It's always nice to have girls train with boys because boys are (usually) naturally stronger, bigger & faster so they will be training up. However, our girls barely get touches on the ball during scrimmages so it's wonderful to have this all girl league where they are guaranteed tons of touches as well as constantly training up. To be fair, Energy is not for everyone. My daughter has a few friends who did not enjoy it because they are super competitive and want to play as many games as possible. Energy recently added Saturday recreational games for players so they get to play in a game, in addition to the scrimmages during training sessions.

I loved my time as a player on Energy. When I began playing for Energy, it was the club's first…read moreyear as a team. I was an incoming senior at Burlingame High School and I wanted to be ready to play at a varsity level for my high school. At this time, I had been struggling with confidence in my basketball skills and I wanted to feel prepared for the incoming season. The coaching staff was a prominent influence towards the increase of my self-confidence. They worked tirelessly to adjust to each player when it came time to help them improve as a player. I personally felt they had a great balance between looking at the team as a whole and as individuals. They recognized I needed training in my ball handling and point guard skills in order to better contribute to the team and take advantage of my strengths. Not only did the welcoming and motivating environment push me to be a better player but the drills pushed my abilities to a point where I began to exponentially grow as a player. Coach Dave, Coach Jeremey, Coach Laura, and Coach Anthony complement each other and fill in what the other coaches lack, which creates a very diverse and successful coaching staff. They also created a team that was genuinely bonded through not only basketball but school and life, which helped create a team comradery. Lastly, I was very grateful for how they understood that I had school work, college applications, and other extracurriculars such as volunteering to do next to Energy. They helped me feel I was capable of balancing all the aspects of my life along with Energy. I recommend Energy to basketball players that want to refine or build their fundamental basketball skills along with having a motivating yet challenging coaching staff to help them along the way. The team is fairly new so it is still working on building its reputation in the AAU community. Besides being new, Energy has so much potential to be a successful club team
