My friend and I both had Blue Danube on our list of coffee shops to try, so it was a no brainer when it came time to decide where to get breakfast after visiting the Clement St. farmers' market. Unlike a lot of the newer coffee shops nearby, Blue Danube felt more popular among the locals. The cafe itself felt more established and cozy, almost like a college town coffee shop. I ordered the California wrap because it's made with a winning combo of avocado and lox. While we waited for our food, we sat down at a table in the cute parklet outside. Our food was brought out ~10 minutes later. The California wrap was a lighter version of a breakfast burrito; stuffed with soft scrambled eggs, creamy avocado, a healthy serving of lox, and served with a side of fresh fruit, the wrap contained all elements of a solid, balanced breakfast. We didn't order any coffee this time, but I'll be sure to try it on my next visit. read more

LOVE, LOVE this neighborhood coffee shop. Probably come once a week (street cleaning day) for the Exquisite homemade Bagels w/Cream Cheese and a strong cup of coffee. Not always easy to find a seat, but folks will let you share, if you ask nicely. A lot of "computer sitters". Stepped out of my routine this week and had the Oatmeal. Huge bowl, fair amount of almond chips, fresh berries and bananas, cinnamon & brown sugar on the side. Choice of milk. All sounded yummy. When it arrived, it was so pretty. What I didn't know I needed to ask was for my "milk on the side". It was swimming in milk and the oatmeal had cooled a lot. And it was tasteless, even w/my adding the brown sugar, some honey, more cinnamon and a wee bit of sugar. Plus the oats weren't even cooked. I was so disappointed. Back to my usual bagel. Solid place for a coffee! I ordered a medium size iced vanilla latte ($7.50) and it was perfect for the hot weather today. My friend ordered a hot chai. She said it was a little too hot at first and she burnt her tongue lol. It's a smaller coffee shop and can get pretty crowded and hard to maneuver through when there's a bunch of strollers everywhere inside. On August 15, 2026, around 11 a.m., I was having coffee and tea (she, my meeting companion had tea) inside. Our hour-plus meeting would have been just fine if it was not interrupted on two or three occasions by the open kitchen burning food. My companion thought it was cheese. I commented to her that I smelled plastic. She retorted, "Well, if it is American cheese, then yes, you did smell plastic." (Ever had cheese made in China?) The second/third burning was the worst in duration and nasty odor. As we were departing, I went to the counter to acknowledge the good coffee, and that the repeated burning of food was quite a negative, the counter worker, a GEN "?", responded with a look of, "Do you think I give a SH_T?" Based on the kitchen and the counter man's care, I don't think I will be back soon. Had food not been burning on the grill, I would have given four stars. I can understand burning food once, but to then repeat it shortly thereafter is just not acceptable in an open kitchen. I know, they were having a bad day, cut them some slack, life is hard. Walking and talking for miles to find a place to sit and drink, my friend and I came upon Blue Danube. I ordered a Purple Rain smoothie and a Yerba Mate tea for my friend. The smoothie was yummy and the tea came with a cute teapot that can be refilled. Having returned from Taipei recently where many restaurants kick out customers after 1.5-2 hours, Blue Danube lets us sit for however long we want. This is my second time eating at Blue Danube. First time here, I got the breakfast bagel which has scrambled eggs, tomatoes, cheddar, and bacon. All of the components were nicely done, although it is a tad pricey at $13.50, given that the bagel isn't too loaded with filling. The second time here I came with my uncle and partner. My partner got the granola with yogurt, which came topped with blueberries. She really enjoyed the granola and yogurt, which was reasonably priced. My uncle got the tuna sandwich, which he really enjoyed. He particularly thought the bread and homemade tuna salad tasted fresh and tasty. I got the rosemary chicken sandwich, which was also very good. I really liked the soft roll, which was soft but held its integrity, as well as the cayenne mayo which gave the sandwich a slight kick. The chicken was grilled nicely as well. My only negative was that I wished the sandwich were bigger, as I was left a bit hungry. Overall a good place for a solid, reliable meal. read more

This is an updated review. I went to the Blue Danube twice this week, with two entirely different experiences. The first time, on a Saturday, I had French Toast, which was DELICIOUS! It was moist, flavorful and a decadent treat. The atmosphere was nice. The second time I went was later in the day, in the middle of the week. hoping it would be the bustling, cheerful, cozy place it was years ago - before the internet. Back then, it was filled with artists, locals, warm and friendly frequent customers who talked and laughed while listening to cool music, eating good food and drinking coffee. There were volumes of art journals that people could draw in and look through. The Blue Danube was a GEM. So I went in there at around 6 pm. There were about 8 people sitting there, each by themselves, working on their laptops or looking at their phones. It was a TOMB. No conversation. No music. Each person plugged into his or her own universe. I don't begrudge anyone going to a cafe to be on their devices. What I DO begrudge are the absurd 1-star YELP reviews of people bemoaning the fact that they have to pay TWO BUCKS for two hours of WIFI. Really?! I could see knocking off one star from your review, but ONE star? Is it worth damaging the livelihood of business so you can save two bucks? Do you know how much the rent is on these San Francisco restaurants. What would happen if people just sat for hours on their phones nursing their cappuccinos? If you can afford to live in the City, you can afford $2 to help keep your locally owned cafe open, that's been around since the 1970s. If you don't want to spring for the $2, go to Starbucks. ANYWAY, great place. Great food. Cozy vibe. And it would be far better if people would just put down their phones for a little while and had a conversation. read more

Maybe I'm ranking this lower than I usually would because wifi is important imo...you have to pay $2 for 2 hours of wifi on top of paying for a drink or food. Imho, that's a pretty wild policy in this economy and lots of people go to coffee shops in order to work or study. I can't even say that the coffee, ambience, or food was good enough to warrant returning or going out of your way to try it - the coffee was weak, relatively watery, and the bagel melt was flavorless. I also felt bad that the door also kept opening and people who were cold had to keep getting up to close it. But, it could be a convenient place to just hang out or read or something if you're already in the area. This cafe is a nice place to sit indoors or outdoors and have a drink and/or snacks while having a little chat or get some work done. The line wasn't long and went by pretty fast since the service was fast. I got the Chai Latte, which was pretty disappointing. It didn't have a strong taste and tasted pretty watered down. This place is a local gem. I've come here several times. The tables all have drawings on them from artists. Very unique. Today, I got a vanilla latte w/almond milk as I was waiting for a friend of mine. Unfortunately, it was more of a latte & I didn't taste any vanilla. I think this coffee shop is the very definition of hipster vibes. It's a small place but the place is packed and busy. There's some out door seating areas and the inside is packed with some tables a couch and a bookshelf with apparently a bunch of journals that people can apparently write or draw things in, which is pretty unique and cool thing to see. The tables are also decorated with some comic book themed things like Batman and the Hulk. Coffee and tea are also fine, but it's the environment that I find the most intriguing and awesome here. I love the overall vibe and aesthetic of this place! The art on the walls is a really great way to feature and support local art. I had a breakfast bagel and mocha mint. Both tasted great but nothing amazing or notable! I came here to get some work done but had a few qualms. One, the WiFi is 2 dollars for 2 hours for a pretty slow connection. Two, it was extremely hot inside the cafe with no ventilation besides the front door. Not sure if this is because of the kitchen in the back but it was really uncomfortable. This is a very busy cafe. Everytime I'm here it's a long wait, 10-40mins long depending. It has a classy cafe feel but super small and crowded. Always ask if people are in line to order cause some are waiting for food and drinks. I've never had the food but the drinks are often hit or miss because it's busy. IMO warm egg and cold lox do not go together. This would've been better with one or the other. I could only eat half. It does come with a small cup of fruit, some pieces room temperature... The restaurant has menu tables inside and a patio area out front at and 9:30 on a Saturday morning it was about a third full. The menu board has beverages of smoothies, juices, coffees and teas and for food, breakfast items, bagels, salads, sandwiches and small eats. For those wanting alcoholic beverages, they offer beer and wines. I got a California Wrap, a grilled flour tortilla with lox, steamed eggs, cream cheese, capers and avocado and it came with a cup of fruit. It was a tasty breakfast sandwich with a good amount of lox. I also got a cup of house hazelnut coffee. Love this local coffee shop. Inside is like a vintage thrift store with antique mirrors and eclectic art. Has a lot of personality. It's a very cozy feel. Already in Richmond, I needed to find a nearby coffee shop to get work done before my meeting. When I was searching most of them close before 5pm, so I was happy that Blue Danube is open until 7pm. The inside is pretty spacious and gets busy quickly. I was lucky enough to find the spot in the corner. The staff is friendly. They have a huge menu for food and drinks. I spent $22 for a ham sandwich and white mocha coffee. Pretty expensive for a meal but expected in San Francisco. Usually when this happens I feel annoyed and don't have high expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. Although simple, the sandwich ($16) was tasty and warm. Wish it was bigger tho. I thought my coffee ($5.75) was going to be small, but ended up coming in a comedically large mug. I mainly came here for the wifi. For access it costs $2 for 2 hours. The Blue Danube is my favorite coffee shop in the entire city. Despite living an hour away by bus, I eagerly make the trip just to experience this amazing shop. The food is consistently incredible, I especially love the bagels with all of the veggies. Their coffees are clearly crafted with love and attention to detail and the staff here make an effort to know their customers. I also suggest buying their Neapolitan espresso beans to self brew at home if you sadly can't make it here every day. When you can come in person atmosphere of The Blue Danube is warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot to relax or study like my partner loves to do. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall positive experience. Although this doesn't impact my five-star rating, I do wish the space were larger. Its popularity means it's often busy, and finding a seat can be a challenge. However, the quality of the food and coffee and the enjoyable experience more than makes up for this minor inconvenience. read more
