THIS is the best place for fresh fruit pies in town, apple, cherry and blueberry pies are so good. it's just sublime. you can taste the fresh blueberries and lemon juice, and they use a wonderful cookie tart crust. prices are great and I can guarantee that you will be the hit of the party if you bring one of these babies.. I stopped in here after seeing the storefront as I passed it in a bus. It looked like a very old school bakery to which it seems, is a dying breed. I went in to get a linzer tart and a cherry strudel. The linzer tart cookie was out of this world! It reminded me of how they used to make them when I was much younger. I have had linzer tart cookies from many bakeries in the past year but none hold the candle to this one. It is the best! The cherry strudel was fantastic with all its phyllo dough layers and very delicious cherry filling. The girl behind the counter was very cheerful and packed my goods to go. I bike from Flatbush to Queens every so often, and every time I zoom down Queens Boulevard, I pass by this shop and tell myself I'll drop by and check it out...on the eve of Thanksgiving, I came on a whim after being intrigued by the tasty treats in the window. When I saw the red center and the powder sugared circles, I knew I had to get it -- Lintzer tarts, my favourite. This place is literally a hole-in the wall; the shop front is slightly bigger than a closet, but the offerings are larger than life. I resisted the urge to get anything more, so I just settled for one large Lintzer, only setting me back 4$. I think hands down this is the best Lintzer tart I've had in the city. Time for some sweets......Andre's has a decadent treat for you. The love affair begins as you stand in front of the store and glance in the display window at the freshly baked goods. When you open the door your met with the scent of butter and the sweet scent of cakes and pies. My all time favorite is the blueberry turnover, followed by the apple turnover. Best words to describe these two is fresh, tasty and an ultra flaky crust that melts every taste bud in your mouth. Don't go late or you will have a harder time getting the turnovers they are just that popular. The turnovers are $3.00 each and roughly the size of your hand. The Linzer torte which is a traditional Austrian pastry is comprised of two shortbread cookies (one with a hole so you see the jelly peaking thru) with fruit preserves wedged between the cookies and a dusty of confectionary sugar. The Rugelach, which comes in chocolate or raspberry.....(raspberry is our favorite) can be ordered by the pound. A pastry with swirl of luscious raspberry filling baked to perfection and ready to be devoured (it may have crushed nuts in it so check with the person at the counter before ordering). Andres has so many options to choose from, streusels, tiramisu, a variety of cookies, cakes and Sacher torte cakes (yes you can buy the entire cake or just get a slice). The Sacher torte is a chocolate addicts dream, made with a dense chocolate cake and covers with a chocolate glaze. My husband missed their famous strudel and croissant. Since we were around the area, we passed by and rushed to catch their closing time. I love a good babka, but I've had only a few so when I saw it on their menu I ordered a chocolate one. $15 for a whole babka seemed pricey at first but it's a big portion. The chocolate is rich and the pastry is flakey on the outside, soft inside. We usually make a strong cup of coffee and have a slice or two.. the chocolate is good but it's also a lil gritty from the sugar. Would be great warmed up... The bakery smelled really good. However I went today and all of the strudels and baked goods are wrapped in plastic individual servings. Are they for real? Their rugelach are famous. I learned about the bakery years ago when a colleague mailed a pound of Andre's rugelach. They are 5*. Fast forward and I know live nearby and will pick up a slice of cake if I'm need of a high quality sugar experience. They're worth the calories:-) Their dobosh torte and seven layer cake are a chocoholic's dream come true. They now have a couple of tables outside. Need a cake for your next event? Try them. The rugelach were a little stale, but. the linzer, utterly inedible - and it takes -a lot- to make a jam filled cookie and dusted with confectionery sugar inedible. I came in with high hopes but was generally unimpressed. The rugelach have a nice flavor but are quite a bit too try. I'd really come for the beigli: the poppy-seed flavor was rather weak (although the raisins do help prop it up) and the intervening dough is thick and dry, with an egg taste stronger than the poppy taste. I will admit, these do go well with tea (the dryness balances out a hot drink), but I'd rather not have to steep a cup to enjoy my pastries. read more

Confession: It's this delicious Blueberry Compote Tart pie that keeps me coming back to this shop again and again. Had this pie during the Holidays and just couldn't stop thinking about it. So decided to trek my way to Rego Park to get this pie. Boss lady told me there's only one available since it's already late in the afternoon. Bought the pie ($16), took it home, and devoured it. Pie itself has a buttery shortbread crust, and crumbles on top. It's the Blueberry Compote that's the star of the pie. Blueberries are not too sweet nor tart to overpower the entire pie, but compliments itself with the crust on the bottom. Because it's not too sweet I can continue bite after bite without realizing I almost ate half the pie. Shop sells other pastries, so will definitely come back for their sweets. read more

Andre's Hungarian Bakery is the real deal! My family has been patronizing their Forest Hills location since I was a little girl and I remember the older Hungarian woman who owned it. She is no longer with us, but I'm glad to say that nothing about their pastries has changed. They're most well-known for their strudel and rugelach, but they carry a large assortment of Hungarian and and European treats that can't be beat! They are a kosher establishment and use butter, I believe, so it's not parve for the kosher meat-eaters. I have never been disappointed by their apple and cheese strudels with their flaky crusts, and the raspberry rugelach... well, I cant stop at just one. One day I am going to have to try their cabbage strudel, which will be more savory but every bit as delicious, I'm sure. Andre's is not only one of the few authentic European establishments left in the area, but it's become a Queens institution and I hope it stays around for many years to come. My only recommendation is that the woman with extremely long nails working the front counter stop using tape to close the bakery boxes and figure out a way to tie the bakery string. Part of the charm of a bakery is the string used to close the boxes! The gentleman working alongside her was closing boxes with the string and it looked much better and is the authentic bakery experience! read more

Quantity: A good sized item, but still felt pricey. Value: $15.00 for a Strudel Half Strip. Ambiance: Andre's Hungarian is located in the Forest Hills area of Queens. The unassuming bakery has just enough space inside for customers to walk along the counter and see the different options. Enjoy the smells while you visit. RUGELACH is the best I've had so far. The one with raspberry jam has just the perfect amount of that chewy jam texture and floral/tartness to complement the buttery cookie. The one with chocolate is slightly different in terms of the filling but just as good. CROISSANT - if you get the plain croissant, it's not your typical French style.. the dough is more like Danish imo. It's HUGE though. The chocolate one is pretty good. But again if I were to categorize it, I would say it's more like a HYUUUGE chocolate danish. It's LAYERED with TONS of chocolate and the corners are nice and hard and buttery.. the best part. I think I've tried the hazelnut torte cake here or something. I remember the flavor being good, but the texture wasn't that great. I haven't tried enough of their other items to give a thorough review but can def vouch for the rugelach! I would give this palace a 3.5 stars but yelp doesn't give half stars. Taste - good, standard. There were a tiny bit on the drier side but I did come late in the day around 5pm. The challah was fine. Rugelachs were good. Have I had better? Yes, but there weren't bad at all. I just prefer the ones that's less sweet but have more chocolate taste. I was curious about what laid underneath the hardened chocolate layer of Sacher. No one photographed a cross section of it. So, I did. I knew it had apricot, nuts and chocolate. I was told the nuts are in the cake. Indeed it was. I can't tell what kind of nut. Texture was ground not too fine, maybe thru food processor. I tasted and saw a hint of cocoa in the cake, but it doesn't taste chocolatey. Unfortunately, the nuts in the cake get caught in the crevices of my teeth. The apricot jam is the filling in this 2 layered cake. The jam is sweet. I would prefer a thinner layer of jam. And lastly, the hardened chocolate exterior. That was decadent and sweet. The selection's better than the website lets on. I got some chocolate rugelach and a vanilla rolad. The rugelach is finger food. Somewhat larger than bite-size. The rolad is similar to sponge cake but in a rolled/swirl shape. Both were good. The name 'rolad' is interesting. Several of their baked goods were labelled 'rolads,' so it's probably not a typo, but Google doesn't seem to know what they are. Quick, friendly service. read more

The strudel here is abysmal. I am truly shocked that they can call this a specialty. This is just not strudel. They clearly put the filling and just wrapped the pastry around it making a disgusting pastry burrito. You are supposed to spread the filling then roll so that the filling laminates with the dough. That way, there is some bread that is actually chewy. Never mind the fact that the filling itself is somehow grainy and doused in dumb amounts of cinnamon. This is the sorriest excuse for an apple dessert I have ever seen. read more

If you've ever been to Hungary, you'll know how important pastries are to Hungarians and how there is a bakery on just about every corner. Unfortunately, not many places can compare. While I wanted to buy up the entire store, I refrained and stuck to just a few pastries. The rugelach was delicious and the linzer tart was exactly like my Hungarian grandmothers make. The poppyseed strudel was a bit too sweet and thick for my personal taste though. Now the walnut beigli: it was divine! We went in yesterday after we had lunch at The Bund. They are a very tiny shop. You could only fit maybe 3 to 4 people inside. But the pastries are to die for. I bought the Honey Slice and the Cherry Cobbler. The honey slice was absolutely delicious. It was quite interesting as it had candies fruit inside. The only other pastry I have ever had with candied fruit has been a fruit log that you get at Christmas. The cobbler honestly was just a run of the mill pastry. The prices were very reasonable. They only accept cash though so be prepared. I'm on my way now to go get more of the honey slice for sure!! read more
