The Blue Danube is a hidden gem! It's got an old world cozy feel. I love the decor and atmosphere. It's Eastern European food, from a couple different counties. I would say make reservations, they got busy. We had pierogis, which were amazing!!! I liked the extra onions and they a little burnt, perfect! I would try anything under the old world classics. I had chicken paprikas, which was served in a cream sauce and dumplings. It was absolutely delishhhh!!!! Oh and sprinkle some Hungarian paprika on top. Your dinner comes with a side, I would recommend the roasted potatoes. This is definitely a revisit again restaurant! read more

My husband and I have gone to this restaurant for many years and the food is still as good as ever. We had a lovely dinner the other night. I had a sampler plate with schnitzel, perogies, and stuffed cabbage. It was delicious. Even better for me, they had a heffenwisen beer which is hard to find elsewhere and is my favorite kind of beer. read more

I HIGHLY recommend this family owned restaurant they make you feel at home the atmosphere will instantly relocate you to a quaint European village as soon as you open the door The parking isn't the best, only street and very busy -good idea to make reservations and if you want the veal paprikas reserve ahead but seriously all the food is excellent and always fresh You might have to wait alittle for your meal but it is worth it and the selections are great something for everyone - save room for dessert ! Had dinner here with friends for the first time this past weekend and given the number of years this place has been in business, I had pretty high hopes. Needless to say the location isn't great. Parking is on the street near a few boarded up row homes and an abandoned factory. Upon entering we noticed the bar which was full with what appeared to be locals. They all turned around and gave us empty stares as if we interrupted a family gathering. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, the service was slow and a little weird. The food was just OK. The potato pancakes were at least a day old, but the perogies were excellent. The chicken paparikash was bland, the sauerbraten was more sauce than beef. I thought the prices were high given the location, lack of interior updates, and quality of the food. Despite the drawbacks it is nice to have an eastern european restaurant in the area. Overall, I'd call this a good, but not very good or great place to eat. read more

I was one of the people that use the excuse that I have known about the Blue Danube restaurant but have never eaten the food. I see some of the remarks that people make about the restaurant and food. I think to myself I've been to many of the other types of regular restaurants in the area. These people should visit some of those so-called "restaurants" that I have been to and maybe they would appreciate this one much more. The food is truly homemade and not something artificial mess from a can. If this place was as bad as some people think then how did it survive the epidemic or be open for over 40 years? I tried the stuffed cabbage and pierogies and it was outstanding. I will definitely be back to try the other meals on the menu. read more

The area outside was rundown and littered with trash and next to a old abandoned factory building.The inside was quaint but we were sited next to the bathrooms which wasn't so appetizing. Asked for potato pancakes which weren't available along with two deserts that we wanted after our meals? I never write reviews but I signed up on Yelp just to review Blue Danube, it's that good! My family and I ate dinner last week at Blue Danube. We started off with the Pierogies and Potato Pancakes as our appetizer. Both were very good. My parents ordered soup which came with their meals. I did not try the soup but they liked it. I got the salad (which came with my meal) with Creamy Dill dressing and wow was it amazing! For dinner my dad had the Kielbasa and Pierogi platter. He loved it! Now I've never liked Kielbasa but I wanted to try his and next time I go I will order that for myself! It was delicious!!! They make Kielbasa perfectly. My mom had the Jaeger Schnitzel. I tried hers as well and it was absolutely delicious!! I would definitely order that for myself next time I go. My fiancé had the Filet Mignon which I did not try but he ate the whole thing and he is very picky! I had the Chicken Paprikas and it was amazing, so tender and full of flavor! For dessert I ordered the rice pudding to go and WOW was this good! Everything was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant. Service was wonderful. Uch, I want to vomit. My wife and I stopped in for a lunch today and left with the feeling that we ate very bad hospital food; overcooked, under-seasoned, over salted, and reheated over and over until the last sucker got the final serving. I can't even begin to tell you how disappointed and (literally) nauseated I am with my meal at the Blue Danube. I love European food and I love little hole in the wall restaurants that time forgot. However, if they're serving crap food like Blue Danube is, it sort of cancels out those affinities. The Mitetei appetizer was texture-less and odd-tasting and it appeared to have been microwaved. I don't think it was freshly prepared in their kitchen either. My wife's Mom, who is Romanian, makes Mitetei all the time. When it's made from scratch, properly seasoned and cooked on the grill, it's an amazing dish. The Blue Danube version is simply reheated garbage. The goulash was another colossal disappointment. It's goulash, one of the simplest and most beloved of all Central European dishes. This one was heartbreakingly poor. It had a dull tan color with an overly thick sauce, zero flavors other than salt, and the meat was so fatty and tasted so "off" , there was no chance we could eat it. Also, no vegetables! Just very fatty meat and gloppy sauce. We also got the Brussels sprouts with bacon as an accompaniment, which I assumed would be cooked in the oven to get everything nice and crispy. But no, they boiled it to death in broth, until it was near mush. What a shame. Could have been a great side. The schnitzel was probably the best dish of the bunch, but still very, very sub par. It was very dry, lacked crispness, didn't have even a hint of seasoning, and the color was very light beige instead of a beautiful golden brown. A travesty if you love good schnitzel. I'd like to say I feel bad about this vintage restaurant being disappointing or that maybe that it was just an off day or something. But based on the terrible quality of everything across the board, I have to assume that this is what they serve on a daily basis. That notion is really offensive to me as an aficionado of good German/European food and good food in general. Absolutely the worst meal I've had in the area and one of the worst meals I've had in my life. This place needs a deep rethink as to where they go from here. read more

I have heard this family owned and operated restaurant referred to as a "Hidden Gem" and I agree completely. We enjoyed appetizers of homemade pierogies (which were divine with the sour cream!) and Turo Cscuza. I had never heard of Turo Cscuza before but our waitress encouraged us to try it and we were not disappointed. Noodles, cabbage, onion, bacon, sausage and feta cheese ... a fabulous combination from Chef Peter. The serving was so large that I took some home to enjoy the next day, and my 10 year old son devoured it and said "when will you take ME to the Blue Danube??" We enjoyed Veal Oscar as a main course, and loved the "Bulls Blood", a dry Hungarian red wine. It appears that there are many regulars who come here and I completely understand why. Margaret and her husband have owned this restaurant for so many years I lost count. I know it was here 15 years ago when we moved to town. I've mentioned before that the Blue Danube is our celebration restaurant. But as my children are getting older and my husband and I are finding ourselves aline a lot more often , the only place we're my husband thinks he gets a better meal than his own kitchen is at The Blue Danube This restaurant gets better with age it's miraculous that the prices never go up and the food just gets better and better . It's lovely when everyone knows your name and remember s your favorite foods. You can go wrong in any choice you make. Must have an appetizer. Must have a main course. Ok so I recently retired Dec. 2018 after 30 years Law Enforcement with Trenton City. And I have never been to this restaurant. So after 4 months I took my secretary out to her favorite place the Blue Danube. Upon arrival there is street parking only, the neighborhood is a little run down on a scale of 1 to 10 for danger I give it a 2. The out side of the establishment is old and needs to be freahened up. So we walk in sit at the 10' bar and have a drink. While sitting there a slight smell of bleach was around so at least ibknew the place was clean. The barmaid/waitress/owner Margaret was very nice and pleasant. We sat in the dining room with old wood trim decorations and European paintings. The menu has chicken, steak and fish along with German and Romanian dishes which is what they are known for. So I ordered a dish called Turos Csusza with a salad. The salad came out with a cucumber cream dressing made fresh. It was absolutely delicious. Then came my dinner with a side of sweet red cabbage. I learned the chef makes his own pasta and rolls his own sausage along with mixing his own butter for the bread. My meal was excellent and the portion were plenty. The past was done perfect the sausage and red cabbage went excellent together. I was very impressed with my meal. So with drinks and dinner for two the bill was $73. To me it was worth it. The only reason for an absent 5th star is appearance and neighborhood. However I will return to try a diff. German dish. read more

This is the second time my husband and I went to this restaurant on NYE. While the restaurant was kind of swamped and the waitstaff seemed to be a little bit in the weeds- their hospitality and kindness continued to be above and beyond. I had the sauerbraten and my husband had the cabbage rolls. Both dishes were delicious. Potato pancakes and noodles and cabbage for our apps- so good. They forgot to bring out a beer and instead of simply comping that, they comped his beer AND my two wines. I hope that other diners didn't get too frustrated with the frazzled service because it was def an off night and they more than made of for the delays. read more

We waltzed into the Blue Danube just before 7 on a Saturday night during Christmas Week, and were immediately seated without rez at a very cozy table for two along a back wall that felt very private. The layout of the restaurant reminds of many other old Chambersburg establishments that set up a kitchen in an old row house. While not in that part of Trenton, it is close enough to offer the same sensation. It was do doubt done in the 60's or 70's, and has all the charm you would expect from a deeply urban environment at a time when Trenton was still an All American City. Sadly, those days are history. The staff is friendly and helpful, and quickly understood that we were first-timers who needed a brief guided tour through the menu. Although my grandparents came from this part of the Old World, our being kosher kept us from sampling most of the better offerings from a Budapest or Viennese kitchen. We ordered the Danube Sampler, consisting a Pierogies, Stuffed Cabbage, Sausage, and curly Noodles, all in their appropriate sauces. As an appetizer it was a good introduction to several tastes we would not otherwise reach in one meal. The star of the plate was the Stuffed Cabbage; tender cabbage and soft ground beef and pork mix with rice, with a mild sweetness that was most enjoyable. The Pierogies were also soft with a potato/cheese filling and nice Sautéed Onion topping. The special sausage was a very small piece, but that was just as well as the flavor was a bit odd to my tongue and would take some getting used to. Our entrée was a shared Pork Schnitzel and Brown Sauce with a side of the same noodles. It was quite good, but not particularly unique in any way. The Brown Sauce was ladled on a bit heavy, perhaps diluting the taste of the breading and pork. There was some confusion about our order, but our server handled it well, and we ended up with a free glass of wine to make up for it. That was reasonable. Bottom Line - We really enjoyed the atmosphere of Blue Danube, and the wait staff. The food was good, but not great. The standout was the Stuffed Cabbage, with the Pierogies a close second. I would not rush back to try more things on the menu, but if someone suggested a good East European dinner, I would not hesitate to recommend a return visit. read more

Central European food is not attractive to look at, but if prepared properly, it is wonderful to eat, and Blue Danube does it right. This sort of food is not available in abundance, not for dinner, in a comfortable sit-down restaurant (there's certainly great Polish food in North Trenton, but they're more lunch places). I've been a few times over the years, most recently, about a month ago, and the food was great - every last bit of it. I am a big supporter of Trenton; I spent many years living there, and still have many loved ones there, so I don't even listen to people when they talk about how "scary" the place is. Big stinking babies. Don't buy drugs, and chances are you won't run into any trouble in Trenton. Easy peasy. The Danube, though, is located in a slightly out-of-the way and run-down side street of the city, in what is now primarily a residential district. And not everyone has the same ideas about lawn care in that part of town. So there's that. But it is a quiet neighborhood with a lot of families, as opposed to knuckleheads, which is a plus. But the differing standards about the proper length of grass isn't really helping the Blue Danube. Not their fault though. My thoughts about the decor are subjective, so take them for what they're worth: the place has a lot of old world charm. But, to me, it's dated, tired, even though many of the details (stained glass lamps) are pretty. I would not mind seeing a bit of an overhaul, design-wise. But I doubt that will happen - Trenton's restaurant district is not the same as it used to be, and I suspect the Danube, like nearly all of the other restaurants, will be heading to the suburbs soon. On one hand, it's painful to watch that happen, but on the other, I would be really excited to see how this particular restaurant reinvents itself. Anyway, I'm deducting a star for the outdated interior. Everything else about this restaurant is great. Service is helpful, timely. And the food is such a treat - it's hard to find such delicious pierogies, stuffed cabbage, homemade sausage and noodlen, and chicken paprikash. Oh, and they make a Romanian meatball soup that's a must-try as well. Prices, for the most part, are in the $12-20 range per entree, per person -- not cheap. But the food itself is not only a novelty, but it's, as mentioned, delicious, and the portions are big. It's definitely worth the drive into Trenton! read more

Hold hands with a buddy when you walk here. The neighborhood is like a scene out of The Wire. Once you make it safely inside, the food is simply amazing. Now it's a small joint and they had a very tough time accommodating a group of around 12 people. The food took over an hour and they messed up a lot of orders. However, everything at this restaurant is good. I absolutely loved the veal jaeger schnitzel. The sauce and texture were amazing. I inhaled that thing. All the appetizers were tasty as well. Stuffed cabbage, bacon wrapped scallops, it was all excellent. Prices were in the moderate range and if it were in a nicer area, it would probably be higher. If you're brave, lost or your GPS is just broken and brought you here, stop in and try it. You might even grow enough balls to go back. read more

I loved this place. The Blue Danube is one of the most extraordinary holdout restaurants I've ever been to. First, any Eastern European restaurant is a holdout, since it's frankly not a popular cuisine, but for a white tablecloth restaurant like the Blue Danube to be in business in Chambersburg, Trenton (which is now Latino) is extraordinary. After more than a couple of years of thinking that I ought to try this place, I finally remembered that I actually wanted to try it while searching for a place to eat (thanks, Yelp app!), so four of us, intrepid explorers all, made our way thru Trenton in search of the source of the Blue Danube. The neighborhood, as has been mentioned, isn't the best in the world, but I've been in worse. Because we arrived at 8 PM and it was the first night of the annual Italian Festival, except for a few people at the bar, we literally had the place to ourselves. Nevertheless, we got seated near the bathroom and bar (it happens to me very often), but because the place was empty it really wasn't as big a problem for me as it usually would be. The restuarant itself is decorated too look like it might have once been a movie set for a small restaurant in central Europe. Cloth table cloths and decorative plates dressed each table very nicely. This is the type of place I remember from when I was a kid and don't seem to be around nowdays. We ordered four different appetizers, pierogies (good), stuffed cabbage leaves (very good), potato pancakes (very good) and chicken livers wrapped in bacon (awesome). A very good cream of mushroom soup followed the appetizers. Since it was our first time there, we were pretty tame in the meal ordering: calves liver and onions (super tender and flavorful), goulash with broad egg noodles (solid), jaeger schnitzel with spaetzel (good, tender veal and nice, homemade spaetzels) and weiner schnitzel (a little dried out--it was flattened out perhaps too thin, but it was still good). The helpings were very generous, and the sides almost went untouched, althouth I did make a point of trying to finish my Brussels Sprouts. Also very good was the warm bread with herbed butter. I had to stop my wife from eating too much of the bread to save room for the meal. All in all, we really enjoyed ourselves and we all thought that we'll definitely be back. I went here on a Thursday with two co-workers. When we got in, we saw that the place was packed. Definitely an indication of a hidden gem. You can see people have been going here for ages and the restaurant is family owned. They have great specials and a great vibe. The food is Eastern European so this hits Poland, Russian, Germany, Austrian, and etc... They also have daily specials for seafood, a specific country, and etc... The food was good, I had some beef dish and thought it was decent for the price, my friend thought that the stuffed cabbages were the best she's ever had, but she says that for a lot of things. We ate at the bar because the wait would have been like 45m on a Thursday at 8... The bar is small but has a few locals that are very friendly. Good place overall and will come back again. read more

I ordered take-out from Blue Danube for me, my husband, and my in-laws, who are quite the German food connoisseurs. IT had been an especially trying week in my family and the food seemed to brighten everyone's night. I will definitely be back to dine in at this quaint, long-standing establishment. Sure, the neighborhood isn't so great, but it's a block off a main street and parking wasn't a problem on a Friday evening. We ordered potato pancakes for an appetizer, plus Touch of Hunedoara, Sauerbraten, Stuffed Cabbage and Pierogies and Chicken Mehedinti. Each entree came with soup (lentil was fab) or salad (get the house dill dressing) and one or two side dishes. I was blown away by the variety of side dishes and soup selections. With our four entrees, we were able to try a bunch of the side dishes, including the red cabbage, brussel sprouts with onion and bacon, green beans almondine, spinach with onion and garlic, and beets. They were all well-prepared and flavorful. Our dinner also came with bread and a delicious garlic herb butter. The Saurbraten, stuffed cabbage, pierogies and spaetzel were the standouts in our entrees, but everything was enjoyable. And we ate it REHEATED! I can't wait to go back for the real deal! read more

We had a reservation for 6:30 for 6. This is not an exaggeration.... we did not have our entrees until 8:30!!! This is my second time here, the first time was on Father's Day, the service then was insanely slow, but I figured it was because it was a busy holiday. Nope. Tonight wasn't that busy either! The owner came up to our table to inform us that she was short 2 cooks.... ok fine. But why not maybe to help him?!!! Seriously. Food is good don't get me wrong but really?!! 2 hours for entrees. This place is amazing! My husband and I visited Blue Danube recently when in the area and thought this would be good based on the Yelp reviews. The restaurant service and food exceeded our expectations. We started with the pirogi and found them to be outstanding - the dough was soft, the filling delicious and the sauted onions served on top made the dish a real hit. The best pirogi we have ever had, and that says a lot since we lived in the Chicago area for 10 years and ate a lot of pirogi. We both enjoyed the soups we chose that came with our meals - my potato soup with tomatoes was outstanding. My husband chose sauerbraten with spatzle and raved about the sauce, which put the dish over the top on flavor. I had the chicken and kielbasa with peppers and onions - a simple dish but packed with flavor - the chicken was fork tender and all white meat. Make sure to get some of the mustard that is offered to give even more flavor to the dish. We will definitely return again and sample the other traditional dishes that are sure to please.
