We thought Blue Moose Pizza looked appetizing and most reviews were positive. When we got in, there were multiple tables unbussed and there seemed to be one server and one manager working. Our server was friendly, but the service was a bit slow. The place was not that busy, since it was "off" season in Vail, yet getting service seemed to be an issue. At one point, we moved inside because we got chilly and asked our server if the table we took was okay, knowing there was only about five other parties in the entire restaurant, and she approved. The Manager walked by to seat a new group, and said "I'll take you this way, we save those tables for larger groups" looking and speaking directly to us. We found this extremely rude and passive aggressive. We ordered two pizzas, The Big Moose and a GF pizza and mozzarella sticks. My party enjoyed The Big Moose pizza, they said it had great crust. The gluten free pizza was alright, and the toppings were incorrect, but I still ate it. Overall it was an okay experience. read more

Our experience at Blue Moose Pizza for dinner was great. We got soup, salad, cheesy potato chips and their pizza. It was delicious. The waiters and servers were so nice and down-to-earth. Our waitress informed us that they stop selling by the slice at 5 and that was fine for us. I really appreciate this restaurant because Vail seems to be filled with high end restaurants that get tiring after two days. This place was comfortable and the pizza was delicious. We ate here during a snowstorm on Sunday, November 4. We were one of only a few groups in the restaurant, and unfortunately, our service was lackluster. The server only came three times: to get beverage orders, food orders, and to drop off food. I had to flag down a different server for a box and our check. I am never one to write a bad review, but am disappointed by my experience. This used to be my favorite restaurant in all of Vail and was a loyal customer for over 8 years. This year was a bit different. My fiancé and I went to get our pizza, the place was completely empty but we still had to wait 20 minutes for a table. After that, we order our regular (Big Moose) and our waiter forgets the ranch we ordered, Parmesan and pepper, and my fiancés beer. The pizza had no sauce on it whatsoever, just cheese bread basically. We thought it was just a bad trip, but we went back yesterday and had an even worse experience. We were seated at a dirty table and all of the surrounding tables were dirty with no one bothering to clean them. It took us 20 minutes to be served (again only 2 tables in the whole restaurant were full, so it wasn't busy). Our waiter did not bring us ranch, Parmesan or pepper flakes again and never checked in on us. The pizza was just cheese bread with no sauce once again. We paid $50 for a pizza and beer, so we do expect better service and taste honestly. Super bummed as this used to be our favorite, we will be trying out other spots in Vail moving forward. read more

My husband and I were bar hopping and stumbled upon this pizza shop in Lionshead Village. It was a great take home treat after a few cocktails and appetizers consumed elsewhere. We ordered your standard Hawaiian and half meat lovers pizza. The pizza was great, but nothing special to set it aside from other average pizza places. The staff here was friendly, not too knowledgeable when it came to the locally brewed beers, but made sure our glasses weren't empty. The atmosphere is family friendly, the bar area is small with restaurant style seating throughout. Could be cool for lunch during a day at the slopes. Probably won't be back. read more

How sad when a favorite restaurant declines in quality and service! Over the years we enjoyed stopping for pizza and salad in Vail atBlue Moose. This summer we entered an empty restaurant in spite of crowded streets filled with market day shoppers and tourists. We missed seeing pasta choices as they were removed from the menu. My Greek salad came without feta cheese and without olives. When asked, they brought a side of cheese and said they were out of olives. No compensation and no apology. The pizza was tough and lacked flavor. Sadly we won't be back to our traditional lunch stop. read more

This is my favorite pizza place in all of Vail. It has a great location, next to the skating rink in Lionshead, and the pizzas are really good too. I usually order the spring or summer pizza, though this time I tried the Mediterranean salad pizza, which was really good too. There are tons of open tables and they are handling takeout first, according to the hostess. Not really an ideal way to ensure the clients are spending the most money while we want to order drinks and pizza. They don't answer their phone when trying to call. People came over and said they had a reservation but hostesses told us they so not do reservations. They must be special.. We are waiting and no one can figure out how to serve us drinks. We went to the bar ourselves to get them. Get your act together. Hope this pizza is as good as I remember. Okay we just sat and had to use the restrooms. Apparently the VERY young employees are responsible for cleaning them because they are disgusting. If we're going to get Covid, this is the place. read more

After a short wait I was seated at a table in what seemed like a tight room for all the tables. They did have another 50 or so tables outside, but it had been raining all morning and everyone was forced in tightly. Service was attentive and offered good tips which I appreciated. The menu is vast. One tip was that the soup was not homemade which I was glad to know before ordering. The pizza was excellent. Ordered the small 12" sized and noticed it didn't have as thick or as wide of a crust as the big ones I could clearly see at the tables right next to me. The crust was great though. Ingredients great, especially the sliced meatballs. The slice we ordered a la carte was my only complaint. It seemed old and for a cheese slice, had areas with no cheese. My kid said it sucked after five bites. I'd recommend the place and considered going back even the following day. It's in the middle of the village, so be prepared to walk there. read more

Tonight I did something I have never ever done in my life: I walked out of a restaurant. This was 2 hours after putting my name on a seating list, and 45 minutes after ordering 2 12" pizzas that I never had the pleasure of seeing. I have never had such an awful experience in a restaurant, and that's saying a lot. Please join me on my journey I like to call "ordering a pizza for your family." 6:30: arrive at restaurant and put our name on a list for party of 4. We're told the wait is about 25-30 minutes, maybe up to 45. That's fine - we can entertain ourselves in Vail. 6:36: receive text message (see picture) that our wait will be 45 minutes. Fine. On longer end of the span given, but okay. 6:37-7:20: Watch in horror as the names on list (link on text) listed before mine wait up to an hour to be seated. I have two children and a husband. This isn't good. 7:20: return to restaurant to see what the status is. Am told that as soon as a table frees up, it's ours. 7:35: Hostess asks if we would be okay taking a high top at the bar area next to the open door. We sympathize with the evening she's having and agree. 7:45: realize we have no place settings and no server. We flag down a harried server to ask if he knows who is assigned to our table. He sighs and says he already has 6 tables but "I guess I can handle one more." Fantastic. Feeling the love. We ask for 4 waters. 7:46: Waiter asks if we'd like to order. We would! We order 2 12" pizzas, one cheese and one some cowboy concoction. Waiter informs us we may want to get appetizers as pizzas are taking 30 minutes or more. I drop my forehead on the table, breath deeply, and order some mozzarella sticks. Which I totally do not want but my 8 year old is near tears in hunger. 8:24: No mozzarella sticks. 4 empty waters. No sign of waiter. 8:25: we spy our waiter flying by us and flag him down. We ask him if, perhaps, our pizza might be ready? He answers "it should be, I'll go check!" He then flies to our left to the kitchen. I see him root though a huge pile of hanging orders. He then flies by us again and refuses to make eye contact. He then goes into the server area..... disappears. We got up and left 2 hours after we put our name in. I told the hostess how upset I was, and she only offers an apology - I think her exact words were "I'm so sorry." I was too as it was now 8:40, and I now was beyond hangry myself, plus I had a riled up husband and 2 really hungry kids on my hands. We came home and made the most delicious PB&J I have ever eaten. I think the hostess forgot to assign a server to our table, and the overworked server forgot to put our order in. Regardless, this was a disaster. Yay family vacations! I came here three times in my short trip to Vail! Friendly staff that will help guide you through the menu for the best choices. Local or visiting, it is the right choice to satisfy your hunger and your family will love it. The food is gracious and delectable. Great tasting pizza from generous and high quality ingredients all the way to eating enjoying every bit of their tasty pizza crust. The Caesar salad dressing is made on the premises and it is very thick. When we put in the order we asked that they have a light hand with the dressing (to avoid having the lettuce completely drenched in dressing) and the kitchen was able to oblige us. The pasta tasted like it was freshly made. I had the Fettuccini Alfredo, which was excellent. Fairly simple ingredients, but in a very "less is more" sort of way. Every ingredient had its place and complimented the others. We'll definitely come again to try other items from the menu. This was a great find! read more

The bathrooms are disgustingly dirty and there was no soap in the men's room. That is concerning considering the kitchen staff should be washing their hands. If we had seen the bathrooms first, we would have left before ordering. In addition, the dining room looked like they hadn't vacuumed in a week. The staff was friendly and the service was good. What more can i say about the "Autum Slice" any of their pizzas they can do slices of, except gluten free. My slice was made to order and came out perfectly. After an incredible afternoon of shredding the green hills at Vail, I didn't think my day could get any better. But then we sat down at Blue Moose Pizza.. Wow. If you are in the good graces of god you may get lucky enough to have Chad as your server. He'll steer you to the pizza you didn't even know you wanted and might just make you fall out of your chair laughing while he does it. We got Caesar salads to start which had an impeccable lettuce/dressing ratio. Then we had the jalapeño popper and the chicken ranch pizzas. Both absolutely magical. I didn't think I was a crust guy until this place flipped my world upside down. 11/10, amazing food, ask for Chad. read more

So, we have vacationed in Vail over the summer three times (2011, 2016, and now 2018). We used to LOVE this place but didn't have a great experience this time--with the food and the service. First of all, we arrived before the lunch rush on a weekday. We were immediately seated and asked for a high chair and a booster seat. They never came but that's okay, we could walk over and get them ourselves. Then the wait between the drink orders, the drink arrivals, and the actual ordering seemed long... but they were starting to get busier so whatever. Five of us got the lunch special--a slice of pizza, a drink, and a cookie for $6. All the slices of pizza came out cold and took over 30 minutes. Two others got calzones, which took even longer but were piping hot and delicious. Then we had one kids' pizza slice that was also cold. They did heat our slices up after we mentioned they were cold, but they acted shocked that the pizza could be cold. In the past we have had great service here at the Blue Moose. This time we had multiple servers over the 90+ minutes we were there--but no drink refills, no name introductions, and really, no one who seemed to care that we were there. To top all this off, it was a gigantic pain to get our cookies. Our bill came--no cookies. Then we asked for them and the server said he'd put in the order to heat them up, but it'd be 4-5 minutes. Ten minutes later... no cookies. We asked again, and immediately a plate of cold cookies came out. We asked if they could be heated up only to be told that they were. There's no way--the chocolate chips were completely solid. I'm a baker; I know what melty chips look like. By this point we just wanted to leave so I said to my sister, let's just take them back to the condo to heat up there. This time a server hears me and says, "oh no, we can do that for you!" So we wait some more and they never come back. Finally my dad walks around to find the manager, complains about our entire experience. The only response is "sorry." Oh, and the manager brings us a plate of cookies. But they are a different set of cookies than before--these are thick, dense cookies while the first plate was thin and almost brittle. So weird! After reading other reviews I hope plate #1 didn't find its way to someone else's table later. I'm not sure if we'll be back to Vail anytime soon but if we are, I doubt the Blue Moose will be on our list of places to eat. It's a bummer because in the past the pizza has been excellent. read more

They're open even though it doesn't appear so. Construction is still going on inside, menus are on paper (must be temporary), & no beers on draft even though they're listed as such. Waitress seemed bothered we inconvenienced her when we walked in (place was empty) and was lacking in personality that it was uncomfortable to hear her barely speak. We ended up walking out because it was just not a good vibe. Even the bartender said 'our taps aren't working?' Had a pizza here: 12" meat lovers with basil on top. Pizza was just ok overall. Flavor was there, but the basil was burnt so you didn't get that fresh basil taste. Probably should've been added at the very end of the cooking process and let the heat from the pizza itself do the cooking. The crust was soggy in the center so lifting the pizza off the pan was a bit of a challenge with the pizza drooping down. Overall, satisfies the pizza hunger in a pinch. read more

Finally we get a waitress. One of the gentlemen cleaning the tables noticed we had not been served and he brought us water, this guy is an A+ worker, these employees should learn from him. Waitress brings us plates, of the 4 plates, 1 was dirty, really, did you not notice a dirty plate? Eventually (i'm guessing) the manager (woman) ends up helping us, she was good, but no sorry no nothing for this lack of quality. Not 1/5 ONLY because the food was very good. I should not have even left a tip. Not sure which of the three stooges runs this business. The menu made this restaurant look like an affordable, reasonably priced place to grab some lunch on a busy summer day of outdoor activities. Upon walking in, I noticed that the place was completely dead on a Saturday lunch hour. There were 2 other couples in the restaurant and maybe 8 on the patio. The oldest employee appeared to be 21. After 12 minutes of waiting for a server to take our drink order (to no avail), we left and walked across the plaza to the "Tavern on the Square". The Blue Moose Pizza was a great dinner after a hard day of skiing. The restaurant is very casual, jeans are fine, and is the right type of atmosphere to relax, but still have a great meal. Our group had the Blue Moose Pizza, when in Rome...., and it was delicious. The pricing for an 18" Pizza was $22. Not outrageous for Vail, but still a 'little' spendy. The beer and cocktails were in the $5 range too. What kinda chapped me was the $5 side salad, for just regular lettuce, tomato (singular) and shredded carrots. For ordering a salad, with a meal, I would think it be less. The Jager shots we had at the end were $6.50, and the liquor selection was limited. The service was outstanding though, and in a mountain town that can make-up for the prices. Marie, our server, was fun and attentive. I liked that there were crayons to write on the butcher paper over the tables. This keeps the kids' attention, for the parents' and other patrons' sake, before the food comes out. Truly outstanding gluten free pizza in Vail. I had the salad pizza which was honestly amazing. I've given it 4 stars as I genuinely expected them to have vegan cheese, and also the service was awfully slow. Drink selection was nice and I had one (ok, 2) moscow mules in traditional copper mugs that were quite well made. I'd go again as a lunch or dinner affair if craving pizza in Vail, but I'd hope for a better selection of toppings, particularly cheese, in the future. read more

I should have looked at yelp before coming here but we were STARVING and this was the first place we saw. We arrived and were seated. They hostess said our waiter would be there soon to get our order. 10 minutes passed and we were just brought water and told our waiter would be there soon. ANOTHER 10 minutes passed until finally a waiter came and asked us if we had ordered yet. Um, that would be a no. I ordered a slice of pizza with spinach and smoked gouda. Sounds good, right? 3 minutes later, waiter comes back and asked what I ordered again. Not a good sign. Our food came out about 20 minutes later and my pizza had brown crumbles on it. I guess when I order smoked gouda on my pizza I expect it to be melted? Instead it was crunchy cheese. Gross. The crust had no flavor. I could barely eat the pizza, but like I said before, I was starving. We never got refills on our water and we never saw our waiter again. We had to ask a random guy working there for our check and even he took forever. The restaurant was not busy. There were plenty of waiters and only 5 or 6 tables. What the heck? They had no idea their phone was broken for hours. We ordered the Winter Pizza and no fresh Roma tomatoes so they felt sun dried would do, completely different flavor. They said they couldn't make a medium pizza and didn't know how to adjust the crust size so we were told we had no choice but to get a large on our second pizza. They were out of spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, whole wheat crust and the phone was broken for hours with zero knowledge until we told them when we walked over. Major change is needed with whomever is responsible for keeping kitchen stocked and servers, hosts, etc. trained on customer service. Not sure what is going on but it used to be a favorite. read more
