My wife and I'd been running around taking care of errands and decided to stop for dinner at Blue Mound Cafe. As usual, Marla. was manning the front area. She's usually the first person we see when dining at Blue Mound Cafe. We normally come by for breakfast but this time it was for dinner. After being seated, Marla took our drink orders, two unsweetened teas please! We looked over the specials on the white board so we could make our decisions. My wife decided to order the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn. I decided on liver and onions, fried okra, and mashed potatoes. Both of our dinner entrees were HUGE and one would had been plenty for two. My liver and onions were good, I hadn't had liver in a long time. Awesome mashed potatoes and fried okra. But the stellar star of the evening was Terry's chicken fried steak. It was one of the best either one of us have ever had. Marla took excellent care of us throughout our visit. Turned out to be a perfect spot; not only was Blue Mound Cafe close to his job site but I knew instantly when we walked in that I found a cute little gem! My son ordered the silver dollar pancakes, which were much larger than we expected. He said they tasted good and couldn't even finish them all. I ordered the BLT which was PACKED full of bacon! We went on the first Sunday they were open and really enjoyed it. We got there mid-morning, right before the rush. The servers were attentive & friendly. They keep your coffee cup filled. The coffee was really good, like a smooth medium dark roast. The portions are MASSIVE and our food was very good. I got the breakfast quesadillas with bacon. They are stuffed! I couldn't even eat half the quesadillas and kept eating the hash browns but they seemed to be never ending. The salsa is really good! The box of leftovers felt like it weighed 5 lbs, lol. My Mom enjoyed her senior breakfast. The only thing that could have improved for the business is the older woman with short white hair working the hostess stand and register could have kept her comments to herself or a staff only area. She kept making comments like "just terrible" "such a disaster" while huffing and puffing. And from my perspective as a diner, we had a good time, saw staff working together to figure things out, lots of tables smiling with food on the tables & we enjoyed our food and service. This place is great. I went there for the first time today and I loved it. I had the Swiss mushroom cheeseburger. It was huge and cooked perfectly. I also liked the fries and the coffee was the best anywhere. I will definitely be going back to try other items on the menu. The service was good as well. Tried Blue Mound Cafe tonight for the first time. Stopped in for an early dinner. The café is tastefully decorated and has plentiful seating. Our server, Isabella was great! When taking our order, she asked great questions and once the food came out she remained attentive but not intrusive. Everything we tried was delicious. Nothing came out cold. We also found the restaurant to be extremely clean! I saw the reviews about things sliding around on the table and we experienced the same thing. The only difference is that nothing was dirty or "greasy". We found the texture of the table tops caused the sliding and it was not the end of the world. We will definitely be back! read more

Came here for breakfast with a party of ten. Food was just ok. Nothing special or memorable, Biscuits and gravy were average at best. My wife's omelette was more cheese than egg. Not good. Main comment is about their tipping and credit card policies. Standard gratuity on a large party is 25% on the gross, not subtotal. Plus another 3.5% on credit or debit cards. Getting nickel and dimed like that just leaves a bad taste. We have no problem tipping more than 20% for outstanding service but for that to be the standard rubs us the wrong way. Then to charge 3.5% for even a debit card is just poor form. So our $55 subtotal became $75. We won't be back. read more

Yall, this was some good eating! I had chicken tenders and fries with homey mustard sauce. That batter was amazing. It was not fried too hard, as many places do now. The French fries were very lightly salted, but they weren't crumbs or too thick. And the food was piping hot! Wooooo!!! I highly recommend this place for a good home cooked meal. Our server, Jaunita (sorry if that's spelled wrong) was wonderful. Mom couldnt read the menu (the blocking and coloring for the menu aren't great, which is my only gripe). We were 6 adults. Service was slow and unsmiling, food was fine. Five of us had a meat-n-veg lunch plate or a sandwich basket. The worst thing was that our 6th person wanted only a single side (though she also later bought a dessert to go), and at checkout, the restaurant tried to charge her an extra $3 for having not bought more food -- a surcharge not noted anywhere obvious on the menu nor on a sign, nor was it pointed out by the waitperson taking the order. We could not even chew it. We called the waitress over, told her it was tough, and we could not chew it. She took it and asked us what we wanted instead. We settled on chicken. We said no, we would eat it there. She came back and dropped the cake and our ticket on the table once again without a word.The cake slice was huge, but there was nothing to write home about. Never once did a manager come over and talk to us about the returned plates of unbeaten food. I have never not had a manager come talk to us about returned food. We get it. Sometimes, it just happens. The fact that the manager did not speak to us makes me wonder if they weren't doing bait and switch and using different meat when the chicken fried steak was on special. As we went to pay, the person next to us was having trouble getting their ticket corrected. They were charged for 2 pieces of cake, and they only had one. The girl at the register kept asking them if they wanted another piece of cake. They kept saying no. Don't know how they finally resolved it. There was another couple trying to get their ticket adjusted because they were charged for sprites when they had water. Don't know how that one was resolved, either. We live in the neighborhood right behind it so we pass it all the time. I got the Ol' Timer smoked sausage and egg sammich. Their hash browns are so good! The sandwich itself was also really good! Boyfriend got the Dirty Rooster without the peppers and onions. That was really good too! Very fresh and homemade tastes. Overall, definitely recommend based on first impressions. So I'm torn. There are some things that are 5* worthy, and others that are not so great. I've been there three times this week. First the good: Scratch biscuits, great. Fan of the hog heaven omelette. I do like the home fries offering, although it might be a tad too heavy on the onions/veggie garnishment. Which was a little shocking to me, as I had enjoyed the breakfast menu. Side of fruit was different than most breakfast places that focus on grapes, cantaloupe, and pineapple. Instead the fruit was just strawberry and banana which while tasty lacked variety. Service is a mixed bag. During super busy times it's understandable, but I ended up waiting 12m after being seated to be approached for my order today and there were plenty of employees, much less than a capacity crowd, and I felt invisible. Overall folks are very friendly though, I just think there might be a lack of organization in the seating/server assignments. The big thing that struck me was pricing. in general, the main items on the menu seem reasonably priced, but I feel I get nickel and dimed to death on certain things. Today I had what is called a stir fry combo which is essentially 2 over easy eggs served over hash browns, with some veggies and near undetectable amounts of bacon and sausage. That and an ice tea ended up costing $21 before tip. i admit I have similar issues with say, Hooters charging me $20+ for 6 wings and a drink, but potatoes, 2 eggs, and veggies for that much seemed off. Some items on the menu are priced in the $12-14 range, others in the $16-18 range, so it is what it is. I still want to go back as I've heard great things about the chicken fried chicken and questionable things about the meat loaf. But the realization I could get hit up that much for what was essentially a veggie bowl has me in my feelings a little bit. Hoping certain aspects improve (service, consistent bacon) so I can raise my star rating to a proper 4. For now it is a 3.5 to me. read more

Went this morning with my sister and our old man for breakfast. The decor still reminds me of the Old West Cafe. The food was good. I got plenty of onions in my scrambled eggs which I enjoyed. The pork chops were well seasoned, but just a bit over for my palate. The hash browns were a bit under as well. But my buttered wheat toast was pure perfection.
