Blue Mussel Cafe is the best restaurant pei has to offer. I live here. And I've tried pretty much every restaurant from tignish to souris and keep coming back to BMC. There's usually a wait for dinner but you can reserve a spot online. It's worth the wait. My fave entrees have been the salmon and halibut. Seafood chowder is amazing. The sides are tasty. Always fresh. Service impeccable. I've been to BMC at least a dozen times as a couple, with large groups and have always had great food and service. Can't say enough about this restaurant. Can't wait for the new spot to open in Charlottetown. Highly recommend!! read more

This place has the best and freshest seafood my mom and i have ever had. The food was delicious and very good service too. Best restaurant we came to on our visit to pei. My mom cant have dairy and they were very accommodating and helpful. They cooked her halibut with oil instead of butter. I got the seafood bubbly bake and it was so creamy and cheesy with perfectly cooked and delicious lobster and scallops. The setting is very nice with cute decor and a nice view. Although, unfortunately it was very hot when we went, hotter than outside making our visit very uncomfortable so would not recommend coming here on a very hot day (unless you can score a seat on the balcony where there's a breeze). read more

They can't estimate a wait with any accuracy. 45 minutes was really 95. Not cool at all. During that wait, told 5 more minutes. 10 more told no 20 more now... the yelp app I guess is the only way to get a table there which we unfortunately didn't know about. Season opening visit and the food did not disappoint. Staples like scallops, chowder are fresh and well presented. Crew working there is solid, attentive and easy going. Place was packed by 5pm and it's only the second week of June. If eating later in the season recommend to get in line using the app. All in all a gem of a restaurant in Rusticos. read more

Visiting PEI at the end of season on a cool day and found the Blue Mussel Cafe in North Rustico Harbour. What a great place with great food and awesome atmosphere. Located on a waterfront glass-covered patio, they provided lots of heaters and warm blanket to keep you nice and toasty warm. The Seafood Bubbly Bake was probably one of my all-time favorite meals ever! Best just when I didn't think it could get any better the Pecan Pie made by pastry chef Helen...also one of the best pecan pies I've ever had. The perfect meal in the perfect setting. If I'm ever in PEI again this is at the top of my list! read more

The food was quite good but the process was terrible! We arrived at the restaurant at 4 PM and downloaded the app as instructed. As we had friends joining us from out of town we watched the waitlist to coordinate with their 5 PM arrival. At 4:45 (with wait times of 7-17 minutes), we tried to join the waitlist. We got an error message saying that something had gone wrong but "we know about this and are working to fix it." We tried three times over the next fifteen minutes, getting the same message each time. As we were close to the restaurant, we checked in again at 5 PM. We were told that they would put us on the waitlist (now at 60-75 minutes). We went for drinks and appetizer elsewhere, arrived at the restaurant when we were "first on the waitlist" and had to wait another 15 minutes to get seated. Elapsed time 3 hours frome first contact and 2:15 hours from trying to get on the waitlist. Food gets four stars. Process gets none! read more

I had 14 people with me and they were so accomodating and quickly gave us our own room. My husbeand and I had the Lobster which had the best presentation and the Seafood chowder was to die for! The dinner rolls were amazing and I was traveling with major Breadies. It was the perfect place to get real local fabulous food. read more

This place is fantastic - the owner, his family, and the other servers are warm and friendly and they bring you some of the best, freshest seafood you'll ever eat. The chowder is the best we've ever had - by far. $11 got us a huge bowl of steamed mussels that were so tender and flavorful. We also tried the "best of the sea" special halibut and that was so good too. Took my family there last night and the food was great. My three kids really loved it. We started with some chowder, the lobster dip and a large mussels. All were superb. The younger two went to the kids menu but my oldest has the lobster Mac and cheese and is still raving about it. I had the halibut which was Ok but I would order something else next time. My wife had the pan fried Haddock which I tasted and was quite good. Desserts were great too. I would highly recommend trying this restaurant out if near Cavendish or Rustico. read more

First time coming here after having heard it was a 4 star restaurant; it was extremely disappointing. The minute we walked in and sat down the restaurant was obscenely hot and very uncomfortable. There were flies flying around us the entire time we were there and enjoyed their pick of the litter from our scraps after the meal. I started by sharing the crab cakes with my boyfriend, which were okay but were bland until we received the chow (a relish type dip) to put on top of the cakes. It came with crackers as well, which was a nice touch and different from the way I have eaten crab cakes before. The chow was delicious and I ended up using it to dip my garlic bread in because I found it didn't have much flavour to it; could use more garlic next time. For my main course I had the lobster dinner with potato wedges. The lobster was good and juicy but the wedges were quite tasteless and didn't come with any ketchup or vinegar or any type of dipping sauce. All in all there were ups and downs. The wait time was a bit long and other tables who sat down after us were receiving their food before we received ours. I enjoyed most of my food but I think some things can be improved upon for the future. On the fence of whether it is worth the drive to come here again. read more

We visit PEI annually and love trying different places each time we come. Some neighbours highly recommended this place even though it was about a 40 minute drive. However, my overall experience was very poor for such a highly recommended and rated restaurant. The 6 of us arrived on a Monday night. The place was full and we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. No issue there, amazing views and a couple shops to wander through while waiting. Once we were seated, we were put in a small hit room right next to the washrooms, with no view of the bay, disappointing. However, our orders were quickly taken and our drinks came. That's about the last good thing. It took about 30 minutes for the appetizers to come and another 30-40 for our mains to come. I know 6 people is a good size party but over an hour is excessive. In this time we were very warm and being swarmed with flies and surrounded by many dead ones hanging off the walls. Not the most appetizing decor. Once the food came I split some good crab cakes with my GF. They were flavourful and came with a tastey chow dip. However, the main course was much more bland. I got the halibut steak with potato salad. The halibut was bland with only some areas tasting of cajan or bbq seasoning and others of plain fish. With no sauce or dressing. The fish was bland and almost dry in the middle. Most people in our party were fairly disappointed with the experience and the food except for the mussels and fried haddock. Would not visit again especially with the travel time involved. I expected a certain level of cleanliness and flavour with 4 or 5 star average ratings. Idk if it was a bad day or why my experience was so bad but there are many other places I've enjoyed much more. read more

I give 5 stars for the food...delicious! Worth trying! I give 4 stars for greeting. First time we tried to go, the waitress said firmly, waiting time 45 min...yet we could see free tables..but no explanation was given. Second time, we arrived at 4;45, we were told 30 min wait (they dont take reservation)...so we waited 45 min but could still see avail tables. While we were waiting, they turned away lots of people by saying 1:30 wait time...and its yhe way they say it..some potentials cosrumers were disappointed, some frustrated. Once we got inside it was perfect! But the experience starts before you go in! We were later told table are free on purpose...kitchen not big enough to accomodate all at once so they have different seatings. Recommemdation to owner: have your staff explain at yhe door why wait time is longer in a friendly way...or have set seating times and let your costumers know about the times and would not hurt if u would take some reaervations. After seeing the great reviews on Yelp we decided to venture here for a late lunch from Charlottetown. Wow. So GREAT! Hubby and I shared 1 dozen perfectly shucked, no yucky shell bits, oysters. Delicious! Plump and slightly salty, served with a yummy vodka mignonette and seafood sauce. We also shared the large mussels and a lobster dip. Mussels were perfectly steamed, served with butter. The Lobster dip was actually more lobster than filler. So savoury! My 2 glasses of Chardonnay the perfect accompaniment. Hubby had a local beer and loved it. As it goes on the island, service was on point and friendly. No pretenses here. The food is as good as it gets. If you are looking for hoity toity place, move on. If you want the best and the freshest the area has to offer, this is it! read more

Hard to believe I use to rave about this place and recommend it to so many people! My husband and our friends couldn't believe the difference from our experience last year! Quality and quantity has deminished. Not even any vegetables with our main coarse! It wasn't late in the evening so I'm sure it's not because they ran out...the owner Steve was his flirty self, and his wife Christine noticing this perhaps instructed the chef to hold back on the veggies! Had dinner at the cafe this evening. Started with the bruschetta, which was exceptional. We especially liked the addition of citrus. Our entrees were the sautéed scallops and stuffed chicken breast. Blue Mussel looks like just another seafood shack serving the usual collection of deep fried items. But this place has no deep fryer. The dishes and presentations are all still basic, and the environment quite rustic. Most of the seating is on a deck with a translucent cover. But the seafood is extremely fresh, and (not counting some classic PEI dishes such as Seafood Bubbly Bake) show what could be called respect for the haddock, lobster, shellfish, etc. The newish owner here is sensitive to the interests of his customers as well as to the condition of the over-harvested fisheries upon which he and we depend.
