Incredible and so worth the waitlist!!! Our party of 6 adults shared (favorites first): 1. Seafood Bubbly Bake 2. Lobster Thermidor 2.5. Lobster dip (app) 3. Shrimp and scallops 4. Pan fried haddock 5. Pan seared halibut Everything, I mean everything, was cooked to perfection. Nothing overcooked. Nothing dry. Even the sides of corn, carrots, broccoli, garden salad, etc. were excellent. The Bubbly Bake was the table favorite and was a generous portion. The Lobster Thermidor was excellent but the portion was small compared to the other dishes. Lobster dip left us scraping the bottom of the bowl for every bit. Haddock was very good but didn't stand out like our favorites. The halibut was fine but somewhat bland. Staff were friendly, warm, and attentive. It was a memorable night for our family. We stepped into the restaurant and all of our expectations were met, above and beyond. The hostess sat us by a window, giving us a couple of options. Our server, Ashley, was thorough, knowledgeable and kept a close eye on us, making sure everything was up to par. There was enough staff, and all walked the restaurant making sure empty dishes were cleared, orders were brought to the table promptly, with our server diligently making sure we were well cared for. They also cleaned the seats as well as the tables, a nice touch. It was a bit tight - lots of tables - but when it was full of diners, it did not get too noisy and we were able to carry on conversing. The lobster dip had a decadent creaminess, with a hint of sweetness that was melt in your mouth good. I had the seafood bubbly bake, hot and delicious. The Caesar salad was also delicious- so large I brought most of it home for tomorrow's lunch. My family had the halibut(medium) it was the best halibut we have had here on PEI. They also had the pork loin, and while it was delicious, the mashed potatoes were to die for. We had the blueberry tart and chocolate stout cheesecake for dessert. We also had the bearded skipper NA drink and the range light NA drink, both very good. Best meal we have had on the island so far- service, ambiance and the food all were above and beyond. Everyone online recommended this place, from tourist to locals so I had to make a visit. It did not disappoint because it was the best lobster roll during my east coast trip. The lobster was decently priced and had the most filling. We got the halibut tacos, nothing crazy to write about. Oysters were fresh but kinda of small. Service was amazing and the place was newly opened because the old restaurant flooded. The place is nicely decorated, clean, modern, and right next to the water. They also have a patio under renovation. read more

We were at the Anne house of green gables and heard from a friend about Blue Mussel Cafe. It wasn't too far so we headed over, so glad we did. We put ourselves on the waitlist within the correct timing and our table was ready sooner than stated. Walked in and they immediately seated us. Initially they seated us as far away from the windows as you could be but we noticed an open table next to the window and they happily moved us. Our waitress was so lovely (so welcoming!, forgot her name). We of course are in PEI and the place is called Blue Mussel, so what do we order??? mussels! We took the rosemary and lemon in white wine broth option. And a salad to go along with it. The mussels were so good I forgot to take a picture ! Have been at their other location a couple of times and was always impressed, even though we usually waited to be seated the food was always exceptional. This time we were sadly disappointed. The new place is beautiful for sure but the service and food left a lot to be desired. We waited 50 min for our appetizer which was just baked brie which we make at home all the time and doesn't take that long, and yes we realize they were busy but when you watch others seated 10 min after you get not only their appetizers but their main meal it gets very frustrating. After finishing the appetizer we waited another 40 min for our meal. I had the pork loin which was very dry but mostly good. My husband had the scallop and shrimp dish and found it just ok, definitely had better at other places on the island. We skipped dessert because we just didn't want to sit any longer, it was very hot and very loud. From other reviews I guess your experience can either be very good or just ok depending on the time and day you go. For us this time around was a disappointment. read more

Lovely newly built location. Service women were friendly but really, even in a beach resort location, wearing shorts for serving nicer evening dining service is a bit too informal. Had looked forward to PEI mussels right on the island. Sadly, they were undercooked and sauce was watery, still tasting of ocean. 'Bread' was day old roll. Had to order separate side salad. Pricey. They accommodated my allergy to a point. They would not remove peppers from the dish I really wanted and when they served my dish it it had paprika on it, which I'm allergic to. We did not see the bartender for most of our meal. The wait was long. They food was okay. The atmosphere was okay. They had a good view of the lake. read more

My daughter found this place online during our roadtrip through Maine, New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia. It was by far the best meal of our 2-week adventure. We both had the halibut. Absolutely scrumptious...along with the oysters we had as an appetizer. I was so happy to be able to buy a couple of packets of their seafood spice...I've already tried it on steelhead trout at home. Not sure it was tasty as the super fresh halibut we had at BMC but the spice was wonderful. A wonderful dining experience!! read more

This place is a must stop in PEI. They have amazing service and great food. When we arrived, the lot attendant directed us to our parking spot and gave our dog a treat. We had short 20 minute wait before we could get a table, but the app system they use is amazing and keeps you up to date so you can hang out outdoors if it's nice and come in when they're ready for you. Your phone receives updates. I had the lobster roll and the seafood chowder and it was great! I was so into my food I didn't have a chance to take a photo. very disappointing. Untrained young girls as staff. Aisles so narrow a wheelchair could not get through until we physically moved our table! One young lady with an iPad kept circling the area just inches from our table . After the 4 time I noted she walked past us 16 time ...this coupled with the other servers and table cleaners make for the feeling of a circus.... Oysters are good but expensive, chowder was delicious but a very small bowl, and the haddock was awful, potatoes undercooked. We've always felt that the Blue Mussel was really a great experience and we tried to go there tonight. Even though they were open till 9 PM, and it was 6:00 PM you have to still get on their online waitlist and it said "the waitlist is closed". What they didn't say was that the restaurant was entirely full and they weren't accepting anyone else. We drove there not knowing that and were told at the front that we couldn't get in. Well, that pissed me off! Because I can see if a place is full, but they should've answered the phone and then someone would've told us that they were full, but that's how they want to do business - everything's online, no personal contact with staff by voice, no one answering the phone. For that, I give them a 1 out of 5. And also my wife and daughter got really sick there two years ago eating oysters! Oh, they gave us $100 gift certificate. Thank you! If you feel like I do and don't want to play their "no reservations" game, then go to the Rustico Cannery. The food and the staff are great, and they answer the phone! read more

Another PEI restaurant where the catch is about as fresh as it gets. The building sits right on the water in North Rustico, and the oysters here are harvested less than 200 feet away--served within hours of coming out of the bay. You can see the boats from your table, which tells you everything you need to know about the supply chain. The setting feels bright and coastal, with big windows framing views of the harbour and fishing boats coming and going. It's casual, welcoming, and always busy for good reason. We had local oysters, mussels, a lobster roll, and fish tacos. The oysters were among the purest we tasted on the island--clean, briny, and perfectly chilled. The mussels were tender and bursting with flavour, the lobster roll came with creamy potato salad (yes, I know, I keep talking about the potatoes--but it's PEI, and they deserve the attention), and the fish tacos were fresh and vibrant, even if they weren't the star of the table. Everything was excellent--not one standout dish, but a lineup of consistently great plates built on top-notch ingredients. This is a very uneven, much hyped restaurant that, if you play your cards right, can make for a solid meal. To have the best experience, get on the waitlist (see their website) well in advance, and avoid coming hungry. Whatever you do, don't go in the rain. Order a cocktail (the mule and Caesar are good choices), the seafood poutine, the chowder (yes really, both), the garden/ house salad, and maybe some mussels (they are ok, not great- mainly because they are often overcooked). Then head for dessert- whatever pie they have, you want all the options. Or, go hungry and expecting to be seated within hours, and do the whole app/entree/dessert thing. You'll likely be disappointed and a bit pissed at the big bill, and surprised at the dried out halibut/ flat seafood bubbly/ off tasting tuna tartare/ tang-less Caesar salad, and so on. No matter what the servers will be kind and the atmosphere sweet. Plates will be cleared promptly and blankets offered when the temps dip. I think this place could get to 5 stars and be worth the hassle with a bit more focus on the food. It's a shame to overcook quality seafood. It's odd that the oysters aren't consistently well shucked or even nicely briny like others in the same area. It's annoying that customers are left to stand in the pouring rain rather than offered the chance to line up in the warm entryway. A little more effort, maybe a little less ego?, would go a long way. read more

The good: the service, the ambiance, and the white balsamic/lemon dressing....seriously, it was really good. The not so good: the long wait, the value of the food, and the lack of a kids menu. They use a waiting list system and our window was 2-3 hrs. No worries, we'll show up at the 2hr mark and hope to get in. We ended up waiting the full three hours (from when we joined the wait list) before we were seated. Unfortunately they don't have much of a waiting area for customers, and there are a lot of people waiting given the popularity of the place. The cost of the food vs what you get is mixed. I got the market salad w/chicken, and while it was quite tasty, it wasn't large. The haddock was really big and tasty, according to my 17yo daughter. My wife got the seafood bake and was underwhelmed by the flavor and portion. Finally, the lack of kids menu was disappointing. I saw lots of children in the restaurant and most likely had the 22cad linguine, which was the most kid friendly item on the menu. Overall the Blue Mussel is a solid place to go, but customers with kids and those on a bit more of a budget should go there with their eyes wide open. read more
