This was my first time ordering from blue ocean and I will definitely be going back for more! All three of the rolls were really yummy but my favorite was the blue o roll! I also had their cream cheese wontons but sadly could not resist eating them before I had time to take a pic! I ordered for pick up, but it looked they had a nice outdoor patio set up so next time i will be going back for dine in! read more

Went for our anniversary, Apps were great, food was okay but less fresh than when we've come here before. Service was absolutely terrible. The server was nice enough but we felt absolutely forgotten and considered leaving a few times in the 45 minutes between ordering and receiving our food as the three other tables in the otherwise pretty much empty restaurant sat, ordered and got their food. I ordered a tea when I first sat down and it showed up after an hour barely warm and it was a teabag in a mug. Which is fine but if I wait that long for tea I am expecting something else I guess? This experience was the last straw and we will not be returning. read more

I'm in town for work and heard the ramen at this place was good. I ordered spicy miso ramen and a spicy tuna roll. The rice on the spicy tuna roll was pretty good. Something was off with the rice. Can't quite put my finger on it. However, the spicy miso ramen was fantastic! The broth had great flavor and just the right amount of spice. Enough to make your nose run but not blowout your tastebuds. Mine had 3 huge pieces of pork. I'd definitely go back for the ramen. I recommend this place. I got mine to go but the inside of the restaurant looked nice. Give it a shot! read more

I would rather eat a bowl of top ramen than a $16 bowl of bad ramen with lots of fancy looking toppings. I got the pork broth ramen. The broth was under seasoned, even with generous additions of chili oil and soy sauce it just wasn't salty or flavorful enough to satisfy. The pork was over cooked and the noodles didn't really seem like the right kind of noodles for any ramen I've had before. The portion size was average, the service was good and the ambience was good. Wouldn't come again. read more

My family wanted good ol Sushi and Ramen. We also wanted to go somewhere that was unique and fun for the kids. So we went here! The inside is like your in the inside of a comic book and the servers are so nice. The ramen was delicious and affordable. Sushi was also a hit tonight! Parking can be a mess but if you get there before the dinner rush you should be able to site pretty fast! read more

The service was mediocre, but some of the food tasted truly awful. Our party had a variety of dishes, including soups and various sushi rolls. The sushi was alright, but the soups were awful. I eat a lot of ramen, and this tonkatsu ramen was the worst I've ever eaten. The pork belly was bland, but the broth had an almost chemical taste to it. Another member of my party ordered some udon, which tasted grossly salty. Neither of us could finish our meals. After receiving our check, we were also hit with a credit card processing fee and a mandatory 20% gratuity for our five-person group. This was ridiculous, given our service and food quality. read more

I recently went to blue ocean. I'd been before for sushi/drinks and it's always good. However this time, I decided to try some ramen. Bad idea. First, there are no prices on the menu. This has never been an issue because all of the sushi rolls and apps are reasonably priced so I didn't think twice about the ramen. IT WAS $26... for a small bowl of gummy, overcooked noodles and very fishy, low quality seafood. I ate less than half the bowl and physically felt too nauseous to continue eating it. It makes me sad knowing that there are far more authentic ramen spots in stl that charge way less for better. The service was fast and pleasant, and the sushi and soju were great. I just know to stay away from the ramen :( read more

We have been anxiously awaiting the reopening of the dining room to use a gift card I've had for many months now. The food is still as delicious and fresh as always. We ended up ordering 5 rolls and they were all flavorful and amazing. We also got crab rangoon and they came out super fast, were hot and fresh and the sweet and sour sauce was the best I've ever had. The only disappointment was that the bar wasn't fully open yet as they don't have a bartender. Their drinks were so good last time that I was bummed to not have another perfectly crafted cocktail but they still serve a limited selection of beer and sake. The service was great and we'll definitely be back! read more

Blue Ocean has been a favorite of ours for a couple years. My daughter chose it for her birthday dinner tonight. The restaurant vibe is relaxed and comfortable. Their service and sushi, 2 salmon niguri are excellent. We had saweed salad and four rolls: softshell crab, St Louis, Catepillar, and Sake Bomb Everything was delicious. The salmon was melt in your mouth tender and flavorful. Our favorite roll was the Sake Bomb with a nice spicy bite. Least favorite was the St Louis roll. Although very tasty, it was lacking I the key ingredient which was tuna. Such a tiny piece of tuna you couldn't taste it. We will definitely be back again. A little pricey but still worth the visit. read more

This is easily my favorite Sushi place on the MO side of the river. You definitely eat with your eyes and stomach there! The inside is AWESOME for someone who likes anime/manga stuff as well. Since the place is decorated from top to bottom in it! I have never really had to wait long to put in my order or have it come out to me as well. Which is a great thing when you have a hankering for sushi. read more

We got take out from here, first time ever. The poke was ok but my daughter loved her sushi: shrimp tempura roll, fried sweet potato roll. My poke bowl was small for the price and didn't have the selection that I'm used to. (If I want poke, I should just go down the street to Poke Doke.) Our pick-up order was ready on time. Prices here are on the expensive side. I'll have to plan better and try coming for happy hour next time instead. But the service here was really fast and nice. I like a lot of the sushi rolls I tried! It definitely woukd satisfy my sushi cravings in a pinch. We also tried some ramen and it was decent. Not the best I've ever had but definitely better than others. The broth could have been a little richer and the noodles were a bit thicker than I'm used to, but over all it was still pretty good. I will definitely try to come back for happy hour. But will probably stick to just sushi next time. read more

Came here to get a Yelp Elite treat of specified three specialty rolls for $15. They were all really good. In fact it was all so much food that we didn't finish it all go figure. Ordered us each and udon because we just moved here and were feeling under the weather. I got real upset when I saw the noodles in the broth being packaged thinking I was going to end up with some soggy fall apart noodles but I was wrong. The broth was steaming hot when I got home and the noodles had the perfect bite to them. The soup needed more items in it to get a five star but overall pretty good. Our rolls specials were the spicy girl, cardinal, and blue ocean. They were all very tasty and filling. Very pleased. Also added an order of the crab rangoons or "goons" as they are called and we got so many that we also didn't finish them. They were really tasty and packed with food. All in all a great meal. Is is the best sushi I've ever had? It's not but they were well made and tasty. What more could we ask for? read more

This is my second favorite sushi spot in STL. Someone in charge knows exactly what they are doing. I spent several years living in Japan so I know how things are supposed to be. My go to is the guydon bento for lunch. They get the beef onions and sauce 100% right. A place that can do the lesser known dishes and do them well is a definite winner in my book. read more

My wife and lived in the loop for the last year and a half and for some reason never ventured to Blue Ocean until last weekend. Let me tell you, we were missing out! The sushi was delicious and I'm not even a huge fan of sushi. There were so many creative rolls too (pics attached). It was awesome! I read about their happy hour and it looks awesome for great prices on rolls certain days and great prices on booze Monday-Friday. Literally can't wait to go to that. The ambiance is great and makes the restaurant look really nice. Only area that could be improved was the speed of their service. However, I'm not holding it against them as the place was packed when we went. Will be back! read more

I love coming here because they have some great happy hour specials! Located on Delmar in the Loop, parking can sometimes be tricky around this area! We've been eating here before it moved to this location....so at least 13 years. We've been out of town for 3 years and came back. A little disappointed to come back and not be all you can eat only on select days and not the day we were in town. Still spent the same money enjoying our favorite rolls. I have been here several years on New Years Eve for all-you-can-eat sushi with friends. We always order the 3rd level (more options for just a couple dollars more). If everyone in your group orders the same "level" for the all-you-can-eat, it make it easier on your server, and everyone can share. Our server was great in making recommendations, especially once we started slowing down on ordering. She suggested some "lighter" options, instead of us ordering another deep fried roll. Sushi for days!!! The last two times I have been here, some part of my order was waived. Once, our group of 5 people each received a shot of sake on the house. This most recent time, we received our desserts for free. The homemade cheesecake they had for NYE was amazing! The green tea ice cream was very creamy- not an overly strong green tea flavor. They always ask if we have a reservation, even when the restaurant is near empty. Each time I have attempted to call to make a reservation, the phone is not answered and goes to a generic voice mail. Went here last week for by bday! I love this place, particularly the 1/2 price sushi specials they have on wednesdays! We were seated and served pretty quickly. I ordered the fried cardinal and the la flama blanca. Both were very good. Also ordered a beer. There beer selection is pretty good for a sushi place. They also have a lot of other alcohol to choose from. Will def keep going here! read more

I had a really good experience at Blue Ocean. I know I'm mad at them replacing my beloved Seki's but I think this place is quite good under new management. The cocktail scene here is off the charts. I love trying their new and inventive cocktails. The sushi still isn't quite there yet but all the rest of the restaurant is coming together nicely. I also love all the new sake and beers they have been offering as of late. Overall this place is fun and the food is good. Also a bonus that they stay open late. I was also at one of their yakitori dinner event. It was decent but the idea behind it was good. Looking forward to more collaborative events such as this. read more

Took a friend for my first visit here. Wanted to see how well the all-you-can sushi experience would be. To be honest, it was not worth the $38 (w/out tax and tip). In order to get the most bang for my buck, I chose 4 signature dishes and 1 regular roll (I also had shrimp tempura as side which was decent but lacked bold flavors). Take a Chance: Presentation with fire is always exciting. However, the dish itself lack bold vibrant flavors that I anticipated with such a display. Cardinal: The roll was one of my favorites. It wasn't overloaded with cream cheese. Had great texture and taste. Sriracha Chicken: This was actually a big winner for me, which surprised me by the fact that it wasn't a speciality roll. A must try for any sushi eater! Caterpillar and Bazinga: These two were deemed local favorites. While I finished both rolls, nothing memorable was gained from either roll. (This was slightly due to the fact that I was stuffed!) All in all here's my assessment Pros: The restaurant has a button at each table to call a waiter to you. Sadly, I only found out about this after eating. The ambiance of the restaurant is a nice mix of anime and urban style. All you can eat sushi is hard to find and this place has it. Thursdays are $10 ramen! The regular rolls are great and the price is nice. They provide pictures to help make food choices! Cons: All-you-can each sushi isn't worth it unless you overdose on the sushi. There's a 2 signature roll limit per order. So you gotta wait a while to get your next rolls. Also, they do not like sharing so don't do that! The specialty rolls aren't so special. They may look fabulous but the tastebuds won't experience much. The rating is mainly due to the over priced all you can eat sushi experience. The waitress was quite helpful. If I go again, I would stick to their regular rolls and noodle dishes. read more

Meet the Business Owner: Chai P.

The idea of the Blue Ocean is what comes up through my traveling and culinary experience with close friends. I am so lucky to be surrounded by great people that share the same goal to create exceptional dining experience to clients. I started this restaurant in 2008 after my graduate school and I picked up the name from a business text book (not related to fish in the ocean). We first offered All you can eat sushi omakase and are constantly adding on other delicious dishes and drinks especially craft cocktails. Hope you enjoy ! We didn't get a choice and were sat at the bar. Ordering is done through the QR code and water is offered self-serve. We split an order of the appetizers: house cucumbers and karaage. I'm not a huge cucumber fan but I tried it. I preferred the one with miso as I found it to be more subtle in taste. The chicken was average and didn't wow me. We each got the chicken shoyu with no pork, no scallions and an extra egg. It felt like it took a long time to get our food. We were both surprised once we got it as we were expecting actual chicken pieces but after rereading the menu description, it was chicken oil. He was a bit disappointed as both our dishes were covered in scallions. I suggested we not send it back since it took quite a while to get our food and they were close to closing. Nevertheless, I found the broth to be tasty and full of flavor despite there being no meat. Overall, it was a solid first visit.

The food menus were in a state of disrepair, with staples holding them together. We started with some appetizers, including pork gyoza, crab rangoon, and spicy edamame. The pork gyoza was delicious, but the crab rangoon was quite crunchy and flakey with not much flavor. The spicy edamame tasted like it had been soaked in Franks' Hot sauce or Sriracha sauce, which I wasn't a fan of. I wish I had ordered them regular instead. For sushi, I opted for a shrimp tempura roll and a rainbow roll, both of which satisfied my craving. Overall, it was a decent experience for the price, but nothing stands out that would bring me back again and again like other places. I might come back and try the ramen and see if that changes my mind.
