I loved my visit to the Ice House Restaurant. It's definitely got a dive bar atmosphere, but trust me the food is solid and the portions are generous. We struggled to get seating at any of the restaurants near the beach for dinner, but this place was roomy and comfortable to sit down for dinner. I got the fish, and I was really impressed by the quality and the value for the price. The menu had a little bit of everything for everyone. This was our first time here. We also celebrated our 46th anniversary. We had two bad experiences at two separate restaurants so far. One restaurant got the order wrong and we had to send it back. The second restaurant made us wait for over 30 minutes and the food came out luke warm at best. We don't mind waiting for good food but it has to come out hot. We felt the waitress didn't like her job very much. Here at the Ice House, We had a very different experience. We orderd two starters a salad and split an entree. The waitress Michele W was so attentive she brought us our meal in three stages. The meal was hot and delicious every step of the way. We watched Michele work all night with joy and energy. The Ice House restaurant is a local dive bar that offers a quaint dining area with amazing diner options. We stopped in after choosing this location for VB restaurant week and were not disappointed! Their restaurant week menu offered specialty cocktails for the first and last course and a few really great main course entrees. $35 for each three course menu was an amazing value for what we received. I chose the 12oz ribeye and my friend had the blackened salmon. Both meals and sides were very well prepared and the salmon tasted very fresh! The service was absolutely outstanding. After diner we chose to check out the bar area and watch the end of one of the NFL playoff games. The bar had a very friendly and local vibe! A landmark restaurant from 1910 I believe and supposedly a don't miss. Welllll. I think in this day with all the restaurants available you can miss this one. Besides being somewhat sketchy from the outside when you venture inside the decor looks very old and tired. At least dust all those old ice house tools! Tables and chairs are old and tired looking. This place is in dire need of an upgrade and a good cleaning. Now onto the service: outstanding service. No complaints at all there. Food: we had the prime rib and the crab cakes. Sigh - I wish restaurants that served crab cakes would at least TRY to make them with lump crab and use old bay. These were horrible - like a canned tuna fish cake. Yuck! The prime rib was fine. The service here was good. No complaints. Upon walking in I was nervous because of the smell but it could have been from the carpet; they are located just a few blocks from the beach. Our party of 6 were seated quite quickly and after a few minutes of reviewing the menu we places our orders. I went with the steamed platter which included 2 snow crab clusters, steamed shrimp, and 2 sides. I ordered french fries and beans and rice for my sides. The shrimp were not seasoned but cocktail sauce was provided so that helped. The French fries were lukewarm but good and even better with old bay seasoning added on. The beans and rice were spicy but not to my liking. The snow crab clusters arrived after everything else and they were not seasoned at all. It looked like the old bay seasoning was added to the cluster after they were cooked. Being from Philly, we love seafood and love flavor aka seasoning. The service started out very rocky because they left us seated for 10+mins without anyone coming by. Started with the fried shrimp for an app, it was made fresh but the batter kept falling off. This was an overpriced waste of time and money. The reviews were great which is how we ended up here... but the food was awful. My daughters food looked good but she got steamed crab legs... I'm not sure how you could mess that up,.. my boyfriend had the crab cake sandwich that was burnt. And it tasted like it was made with miracle whip or something.. GROSS... I'm not a fan of a burned sweet tasting crab cake. And the tarter sauce had the same type of taste... nasty... My one picture i took was the fried flounder sandwich...when have you ever ordered a fish sandwich and it's soggy and all broken up. We ordered no lettuce and tomato and it was on there anyway. The very sweet lady that worked in the front, ran out to their little patio thing they have to sweep up glass that someone had broken and the manager there tonight absolutely scolded her and I felt embarrassed for her for him to fuss at her telling her that he isn't worried about broken glass with how busy they were. But why would you yell at your employee at all but especially in front of customers... that clearly is part of the reason people don't want to work now... the lack of respect from managers. We stopped in last night (Mon 12/27) with family to enjoy the burger night special. I'm not much of a burger fan, but I will never turn down family time! We came around 5:30 pm and were seated right away. Our server, Jen May, was incredibly pleasant, kind and engaging through our entire meal. I would definitely request her on our next visit in! The indoor dining area is cozy, with several tv's to enjoy a game or two. It felt a little cluttered and the floor under the benches along the back wall could use a good vacuuming and cleaning, but that shouldn't deter you from dining in. The food and service are top notch. The website price for burger night is not consistent with the actual price on the menu we received ($6.99 versus $5.99 on their website). I totally get the cost of everything - Jen May let us know that they were having to increase prices based on meat costs, which I totally get! In any case, the burger and fries is still one of the best off-season deals at the beach. The burgers are HUGE, cooked to perfection and really tasty. I am starting my post-holiday detox a little early and tried the garden salad with grilled chicken. Chicken was juicy, but a little over-seasoned. The veggies were VERY fresh. Our daughter's burger was the perfect size and also juicy while still being cooked to well done. Restrooms are clean, though a little awkward in placement - you have to walk through the prep station on the way to the kitchen, which is a bit hectic on a busy night. I nearly took out a server walking with my toddler to the ladies room. Overall, the service and tasty food were enough to make me want to return. We were in town for a festival and decided to swing by for a late lunch. I loved it! It's your typical dive bar with a great history - my favorite kind of place. We sat at the bar and our bartender, Amy, was so kind and personable. The food was amazing (buffalo chicken wrap & potato skins) and the drinks were extremely reasonably priced (especially for the beach area).There is a small parking lot in the back and plenty of large tables. Our family of 8 w 3 littles arrived around 6:30. We were seated after they finished clearing a large table w booth on one side which is great for the kids. Waitress was friendly and attentive. The hush puppy appetizer of 10 inchy sized balls was yummy w sweet flavor and butter served on the side. Kid meals were generous. Adults had fried shrimp, steamed shrimp, preachers sandwich, Greek wrap and crab cake sandwich. The crab cake wasn't a hit but everything else was although the huge fried shrimp seemed a bit salty but could just be me as I don't use much salt. We may go back while in town for a week. It's time for an updated review from me for Ice House Restaurant. My original review was from my first visit here back in 2014. This place is actually historic landmark since 1910. Although the building is old, it is still quite functional. There is some parking available in front where some storage units are, as well as behind the restaurant and a parking lot across the street (parking is angled and you need to enter on the eastern side of the lot if you park there). You can find me here many Monday evenings for their Burger night special. Things in this world have definitely changed, especially in 2020, compared with 2014. There is a sign that masks are required to enter the restaurant. There is hand sanitizer available at the host stand when you come in. Takeout has always been available here, but delivery has never been an option to this day. When we come in, we are always greeted with a smile and have generally been seated immediately. Seating in the main dining area is limited now due to the current conditions we are now living in, keeping social distancing enforced. Consider this the new normal for now. All staff are wearing masks and have seen tables sanitized after other tables are done. My most recent visit here was on November 23, 2020. Michele is one of our regular servers that we know here and she knows exactly what we drink when we get seated. Mondays are burger night (starts at 5 pm) here and that's exactly why we were here that evening. Since we are here often, our server even remembers what we normally get with our burgers too. I go with a medium well burger with jack cheddar cheese and bacon added to it. They come with lettuce, tomatoes, and onion already. They have done a great job for me with my mushroom allergy as well. Our server knows that we don't use mayo, so she doesn't even bring them out with our burgers. The burgers come to the table about 5 to 10 minutes after ordering. The burgers are consistently cooked to order and always nice and juicy. The fries also come out hot and just the way they are liked as well. Overall, since I have been coming here quite frequently now, this is an excellent place to come. It may have the feel as being a dive bar type of place, but it's really good for anyone, even children. Even though I tend to come in for burger night, they actually have different specials each day throughout the week, including weekends. If you happen to be in the area or at the oceanfront and want to get away a bit, you should definitely look at this place and try them out. read more

Absolutely loved this place. Stopped by for a quick dinner in virginia beach. We had a table of 5 and were seated immediately. Our waitress was very chill, and helpful with the menu. I definitely got the vibe, this is not a place that tourists normally visit. It's a pretty quiet and chill crowd, which was Lovely! It dosn't look like much on the inside, the love is in the food. This was some of the BEST food we had in VA! Fairly priced and delicious, exactly what we were looking for!! I got a grilled chicken sandwich with a side of mac and cheese. Everything on the sandwich was perfection and so fresh! The frys and mac we're also great. Well seasoned, and had a nice peppery flavor. (Not to much.) My three visits to Ice House have been spread out over probably two years. I recall local Yelp Elite Drew P. telling me for years to hit up their Monday burger deal for $5 which was my first occasion to dine with them and it was great and a bargain. The location is in old area of Virginia Beach a few blocks from the Oceanfront possibly called Shadow Lawn but please anyone correct me if wrong. The building itself is quite the antique and previously housed a rail station. Don't let the looks deter you. There are a few businesses connected, most notable Zeke's Beans & Bowls. Parking is directly across the street, be careful of the designated one-way entry. There is also parking in the rear. The lot had some minor debris. Ice House business is segmented in a way. They have strong bar activity and the dining room that adjoin each other by a door that is often closed. If you plan on bellying to the bar be advised it's small. My last visit on Saturday found them packed and standing room only. The dining room although smallish with just over a dozen tables had plenty of vacancy. I believe a hostess/waitress would seat guest but no one was there. A waitress quickly acknowledged me and I took a seat at a rear table. The dining room is best described as rustic with dark wood and a barn feel. The decorations a hodge podge of items. I was reminded by my server that it was restaurant week which was the reason I came. However she also reminded me that Saturday's are probably the busiest of the week with a Prime Rib special. The menu is American, so they offer fare of steak, chicken, ribs, salads and sides. But the menu is actually extensive with seafood platters and even award winning lumpia that Chef Patrick Hylton singled out in a 2019 Pilot story. My order was the Saturday Special 14 oz Prime Rib for $21. It comes with two sides. I included french fries and cole slaw. Although the have draft beer, bottles and wine I elected for tap water. Within 15 minutes my plate hit the table. The rib was the size of an adult foot and over an inch thick with marvelous bark and marbling. It was cooked to my specifications medium. I was excited, everything looked outlandishly delicious. So the verdict. The Prime Rib was easily the best I've had in the area. The meat was tender and chalk full of flavor. The outside fatty bark a real treat. Dipped in horseradish even better. The fries were browned up, crispy and seasoned perfectly. The slaw was a shocker as crisp but still creamy. Is Ice House a hidden gem in Virginia Beach? I'm not so sure I would go that far, but it is a locals restaurant that is not as well known in the oceanfront. Keep in mind they offer Saturday and Sunday Brunch. If you have yet to try I would give them a shot. Great food, service and prices are family friendly too! read more

Ice House on Norfolk Ave is definitely a locals place. Lots of history in this building. They are great for lunch specials and the nightly specials. The food has never disappointed. I did go during restaurant week and ordered from the $35 menu. I got the Deconstructed Lox and Bagel salad and Broiled Scallops. I gave away the dessert because I don't particularly like dessert. The salad was delicious. You can't go wrong with smoked salmon. And the Broiled Scallops. Wow! They did not skimp on the amount. It was served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I ate every bite. I like a simple scallop and that's what this was....just the scallop with some S&P and butter. Like I said....they did not skimp....I got at least 6 scallops. I had great service by Karen who was very attentive and made recommendations. I will definitely go back....maybe Burger night or for the chicken salad. read more

While we were on our short Valentine's Day vacation we decided to go to a locally recommended restaurant. Thursday dinner time they have a rib special so I tried them. I was not disappointed at all. I really like this place but don't be fooled by it's location as it's tucked in a cranny of the oceanfront. The inside is intentionally done, mildly dark (how I like it), and just a very homey place.
