Tried this place on a whim because I was in the neighborhood and craving fish tacos. I originally planned on getting my food to go but the waiter suggested I stay and eat at the bar. I'm usually not one for small talk and random chatter but, I must admit I'm glad I stayed. The grilled mahi mahi fish tacos were good but, like another reviewer mentioned, the shrimp taco was lacking. The house-made salsas however were great, so I smothered the shrimp in it that. At the waiter's suggestion I substituted the refried beans for green beans and slaw. Very good decision indeed. I've been here twice and I'm a big fan of the Garbage Can Nachos. They are some of the best, if not the best, in the New Orleans area. Nothing fancy. Just Tex-Mex goodness. Lots of toppings; Beef, beans, cheese, black olives, tomato, maybe onion, jalepenos and sour cream on a bed of homemade chips. They're currently $8.95. Generous portion. More than enough for a meal. Two people could split this for lunch. I had to get extra chips both times because there was so much toppings. Service is friendly. Ambiance is fun. The place feels a little claustrophobic when crowded. I went around 7:00 on Friday and had to park down the street a bit. It stays relatively dark inside, which I like. read more

This is a funky little dive in Old Jefferson. Do not be scared off by the outside of the building or you will surely miss out on a good meal. I have never, ever had a bad meal here. I usually go here for lunch with a friend of mine. We split the loaded burger and an order of cheese fries. The burger is massive and delicious. Unless you have a huge appetite, splitting it is the way to go. I have also tried the quesadillas, the Thai ribs and the garbage can nachos. All were delicious, but the Thai ribs are fantastic. Super tender and just the right Asian spice. Their tortilla chips & guacamole are a great starter. The only reason that I do not give this place 5 stars is because it is one of those places where you leave and your clothes smell like their food. The joint is that small and you are literally like 10-15 feet from the kitchen/grill. Also, if you go right at peak lunch times, you probably won't find a parking space because they only have like 8 spots. Parking next door at Jefferson Feed is risky because they do have signs posted that they will tow your car. All and all it is a great little place. Perfect atmosphere for a father and his three year old son. The waitress was great with my son and went out of her way to make us feel special. I like this place so much. This is a place that mostly neighborhood locals know, but you can always drop in and be seated within a few minutes. They have pretty good margaritas and sangrias. I love the grilled tuna and the menage salad. I also like that the waitresses all help each other and kind of work as a team, so whenever you need something, you can always get without having to wait on your own server. This place is super cute. Me and the boy went in at lunch after picking up some gardening supplies next door at Jefferson feed. Burgers AND Italian AND Mexican had us a little wary, but we were to hungry to come to a consensus on somewhere else to stop on the way home. I'm glad we stuck around. He had a shrimp burrito that was huge and absolutely stuffed with shrimp AND came with rice and refried beans on the side. The boy can put away food and he was struggling with those last few bites. I had three steak tacos, gringo style. I love my tacos Mexicanos but was in the mood for cheese. You can either have your tacos topped with lettuce, tomato, and cheese *gringo) or onion and cilantro with lime wedges (mexicano). Both varieties come on a single corn tortilla. This would be my biggest complaint. The tortilla was definitely not fresh. It wasn't old or stale, but it wasn't made recently either. I ended up trying to eat as little of the tortilla as possible. Which is a shame since a freshly made corn tortilla can be so darn delicious. The steak in the tacos was suspiciously tender, but I won't complain about that. The lemonade wasn't fresh either. It tasted like lemon gatorade or something. They really are getting all these stars for just being a really cute spot. The two waitresses were fast and sweet. They worked in tandem to cover the whole dining room, which is smart. The food was just fine, but the place has a nice ambiance. I would love to sit in the corner with friends and have a few margaritas and snacks while watching a world cup game or something. I love this place. From the Mexican dishes to Italian, there is no meal this place doesn't get right! I was always a fish taco girl, so I brought my dad who is a picky fish taco eater. He loved them and always asks if we can get them when he's in town. My mom loves the lasagna but I was skeptical at first since they're so good at tacos, fajitas, burritos, etc. However, the lasagna was one of the best we've ever had! Now both of my parents request to go there when they're in town! Blue Tomato may look like a giant hole in the wall, but you'll quickly realize you're dining at a local favorite once you get seated. The menu is a great mix of Mexican cuisine and American dining, with some other styles of food thrown in for good measure. Some of the Mexican menu options are more authentic than others, with some being down right tex-mex. At the end of the day, it's all very well crafted and very tasty. I wouldn't recommend this for an authentic Mexican experience, but if you want a delicious monster burrito or a terrific hamburger you're in the right place. The menu isn't the cheapest, but it's also not too pricey. The staff is also very friendly and very efficient, I've walked out smiling each time I've gone in. This used to be one of my favorite places to eat, but in recent years the portions have gotten smaller, and the quality of the food has declined. I used to be able to make two meals from a single meal, but that is no longer the case. My go-to item that I order is te ground beef chimichanga, which used to come to the table nice and cripsy. The past few times I ate there it was greasy and soggy. The food definitely seems to have a pre-made, and frozen before being cooked quality to it now. It is definitely off my list of places I recommend to people. I feel the need to add that the restaurant is extremely small, and gets extremely crowded when they are busy. It also does not have enough parking, and the other businesses that are close will have your vehicle towed for parking in their lots. read more

Having spent considerable amounts of time in Mexico and currently residing in Texas I may be a bit biased on Mexican food. My party of three had the chips, salsa and guacamole for starters. The salsa was bland almost like canned mild Rotel. When I asked for hot sauce I was quickly offered a Louisiana style hot sauce and a habanero sauce. A dash of the habanero sauce helped. The guacamole was simply smashed avocados with diced tomatoes on top, just plain. Could have even been bagged avocado not fresh. For entrees we had the Big Ass chicken burrito, garlic shrimp fajitas and spinach artichoke chicken quesadilla. Shrimp fajitas: good flavor but the shrimp, onions and peppers were just sautéed not really grilled or charred as I would have like to see. Big Ass Chicken Burrito: they weren't lying about being "Big Ass" it took up 1/2 of the plate. Pretty tasty with a little added hot sauce. Spinach Artichoke Chicken Quesadilla: taste was great, not as greasy as some quesadillas I've had which is a good thing. The idea of a spinach artichoke quesadilla is a great one. All in all the food was good, just found it all to be extremely bland . Prices were fair and the service was on point. read more

1st visit. Heard about the place years ago & just never made it there. Apps we got my must have Chips & Salsa. Salsa was good & chips were fresh. Son ordered the Cheese Nacho's. This was shredded cheese from a bag piled on top of chips then tossed in the oven. This was just "ok". I could of did without it. Entree' my husband got the pulled pork sandwich which was so tender & flavorful. My husband is still talking about it. My son & I got the Big Fat Burrito. His Shrimp & mine Chicken (it is also filled w/ beans). This comes w/ rice & beans & topped w/ salsa & cheese. The Burritos are so huge they made great left over dinner the next night. We were so full we skipped dessert but we'll definitely go back & not wait yrs this time. If the place gets real busy parking may be a problem. It is on the corner of Jeff hwy so parking in front of the door is a pain getting out when you leave. read more

I've eaten here many times but never tried the ribs. Ordered the 1/2 Thai and 1/2 BBQ and it was fabulous! The meat without any sauce is so flavorful. The sauce just adds to it.
