I need to be better about taking pictures, there are about 100 Yelp photos on my camera that need uploaded. What this implies is that these baked goods were ate in about 10 minutes. I had a chocolate and an almond croissant; Daniel had two chocolate eclairs. All four were soooooo good, obviously fresh, and the croissants were pretty close to what I had in Montreal. When you come inside it's clean and the smells are amazing. There is a small patio outside for sunny days. Get some of their bread for your next meal, even the prices are reasonable. Who isn't intoxicated by the smell of freshly baked bread? Add free samples and we swoon. This place has a lot going for it and it's local; I wanted to love it. But I don't. My cherry and apricot biscotti was so stale I couldn't even gnaw through it. I could tell the flavor was amazing when it was fresh so believe me, I tried. The blueberry muffin was, "Meh." Just needed a tad more sugar -- and that's saying something because I am most definitely NOT a fan of the "cupcake muffin" conundrum. Worst of all, there were fruit flies in the bakery case. Ew. The cookies were delicious and I enjoyed the zucchini cheese bread, but no one in my family was wowed by it. One of those places you find looking for something else and are SO glad. They do have samples of their bread, as many others say (french bread and butter, at least when I was there) and it was delightful. I ended up getting a pepper parmesan loaf, which I've just been eating like a little piglett, and a cherry linzer (gone on the ride home). Ate about half of the loaf of french bread my sister got, but my mom wouldn't share the salty dog loaf she purchased. Definitely a re-visit when I'm back in the area! read more

The person who helped me was able to think critically (often lacking in customer service these days). The chocolate cookies tasted absolutely amazing. I had to create a profile just to say that this place rocks! When I walked in I about fell on the floor upon meeting that "bread is being baked here" smell. The baker was extremely helpful and personable in the way that I want a merchant to be when I've found a place I hope to return to. I'm a huge fan of good bread - having been able to teach English in a baking school in France right after college. I thought I might have to defect until I found this place... Plenty has been said in the other rave reviews of the Bluegrass Baking Company. This is simply a "amen" to all that crusty "staff of life" bread goodness being baked in that sweet little shop tucked away on Clays Mill Road. Jim and Co. bake some fantastic bread and I feel fortunate to have them in my town. I often purchase my BBC bread at the Liquor Barn and Good Foods Co-op. Occasionally I visit the bakery and it is always a treat. Among my favorite breads are the 7 grain sliced sandwich loaf (also available as a round), the ciabattini (small ciabatta), pan bello (super crusty Italian white round), and German beer bread. When I do make it to the shop I invariably indulge in one of Jim's delicious confections such as a raspberry danish or chocolate croissant, oh yeah! During the holidays BBC does some great limited run breads as well. read more

I was disappointed in this bakery for a few reasons. First, I ordered a sheet cake and it turned out to be more like bread. Thick and dense and heavy, not light and delicate as I expected. Maybe I'm not a cake expert and I don't know what cake is really supposed to be like, but the people I served it to didn't like it either. This left me with a lot of wasted cake--and at $47 for a half sheet, that was a lot of wasted money in my opinion. When I called and complained to the manager, he promised me a refund, but when I came into the store to get it, the manager wasn't there and the person on duty said she would not give me a refund after all. Instead, she offered me in store credit for $45. So, I'm going to hope their pastries are better than their sweets, as some of the other reviews have suggested. (The price of the cake is another point of frustration. When I called to order it and said I had a budget of around $30, the person taking the order said that would be no problem. But, when I showed up the day of my event to pick up the cake, they charged me $47! I was told that the person on the phone had been wrong, and they wouldn't adjust the price.) Bottom lines: a) don't choose this bakery for the cake; b) ask for an exact price quote when you order and get it in writing so they don't change it on you when you pick it up c) don't expect honest or friendly service on-site--promises made on the phone may be broken. read more

I used to go here every morning to drink coffee and munch on fresh bread. Then my schedule changed, and it's been so long ago that I forgot all about it. I was playing with the Yelp! app, and did a search of nearby businesses, yesterday. WOW, am I glad that I did!!! I was a few blocks away, and thought it strange that I didn't know about a local bakery..... Well, I did. It's just been a while since I've been in the neighborhood. The floor plan has been rearranged, but the smells and friendly service is still very much there. Much has already been said about the wholesomeness of the breads, and the rich crunchy crusts (not all of their breads are crunchy crusted, but those that should be - are.) So, I'll just say they are, and Yumm. I'm thankful for the Yelp! app, and rediscovering an old favorite haunt. As I was leaving with a bag of deliciousness, I noticed a Yelp! sticker on their door. Been in here a couple of times and every time I go in...the magic begins. Super nice store, laid out nicely with everything in clear view on shelves. If you don't see it...ask, they may have it fresh or in the back (got some heavenly things this way here). As mentioned by others, the bread is crusty and wonderful and defintely "old world" (which being a former military guy and living in a bakery in Germany, I appreciate). Great pastries and cookies too. The Almond/Coconut bars are amazing and my 9 year old is fond of chocolate croissants. The Cream Puffs and Coconut Macaroons are amazing as well. One other thing...the baker is very friendly and loves to talk to the customers. Nice guy. My only complaint...kind of outta the way. Need one of these in every town in KY. read more

I tried this place a couple of times (due to the great reviews) when we first moved here about 2 1/2 years ago and I just wasn't a fan. I recently stopped by again (largely because they are across the parking lot from North Lime which is a steady fixture in my life), and I'm now hooked. Their bagels have ruined me for all other bagels in Lexington. They are AMAZING. The miniature ciabatta loaves are also an insanely great deal ($1) and perfect for my family's panini nights. Add to that their generous samples, the intoxicating smell that welcomes you as soon as the door opens, and their wonderfully friendly and helpful staff, and I'm amazed it isn't insanely crowded every time I walk in the door. Do yourself a favor and at least stop by for a cheese bagel the next time you're in the area (just please don't take the last one if you make it there before I do!). read more

There is so much packed into this what looks like a tiny bakery off the beaten path. I drove past many times before going in person after Good Foods Coop stopped selling their basic sliced breads. Had I only known! So many good breads, all shapes and sizes, as well as multiple pastries of all kinds and rugelach too (perfect). I don't think I've had anything bad there although I'm still looking for that perfect baguette that La Matin used to sell - not quite as light and airy, but still light years better than any other baguette in Lexington. Their peasant breads are great - someone recommended the danish which I would normally never consider, but this tastes like what probably a real danish should - bright tart fruit flavors, delicous flaky pastry. Unfortunately I'm doing a diet that only allows fermented wheat products for awhile and will only be able to get the sourdough bread, but lucky for me it's fantastic. read more

I was so excited to try fresh local bakery bread and got the 7-grain loaf. It had a very strong soapy taste. I actually got scared enough thinking they may have accidentally spilled something in it that I threw it out. I also wasn't a fan of the employees smoking right in front when I pulled up, then went in and handled my bread with their smokey cigarette hands without washing them. I'm hesitant to try again, but I feel like everyone loves this place, so it must've just been an unlucky experience. Hoping next time will be better! read more

The Bohemian beer bread is good but costs $4.25. The croissants are fresher and tastes a little better than those at Starbucks. The staff were friendly but I wish they would not handle the bread and cookies by bare hands after handling cash. read more

I've never been in the building but they get 5 stars from me! My husband often works in the Lexington area and he started bringing home the wonderful BBC bread that he would buy at The Liquor Barn. Bluegrass Baking is an underrated treasure for Lexington. If you want a nice place to drink coffee and fresh OJ, Magee's will do fine. For superior baked goods, you have to go to Clay's Mill and BBC. Never had anything but a great loaf of bread. I especially enjoy hte nut breads. The biscotti are also worth a try. Friendly staff. read more

I was calling around Lexington trying to get 100 cookies on short notice. I needed within a 2 hour turnaround time for a company function. BBC was the only bakery willing to accommodate the order on such short notice. They literally baked the cookies and had ready to pick up on time. The cookies were delicious. So I went in because of the good reviews. The place smelled so bad, the smell just hit you when you walked near the door. Went in and the place had bread and pastries sitting out and some in cases. Everything was covered with flies and gnats, even inside of the cases. I inquired about some of the breads and the man was trying to shoo gnats away from the bread I was asking about. The seven grain bread is the best bread I've ever tasted in my life. I challenge you to tear off a small piece and let it dissolve in your mouth and slowly chew so that you can experience the different textures and complex flavors that only come with the chemistry of slow chewing. Not only do I love the many breads - especially the rustic bread with walnuts -but I also find the desserts to be divine. The easiest dessert to take to any event is the Bete Noire, a flour less rich chocolate cake. Add whipped cream and raspberries and you have something very special indeed that our guests will love! You can reserve items in advance and don't forget the wonderful holiday breads they make in November and December. The owner and the staff all love what they do and it shows. Lexington's best source for handcrafted, artisan-style breads and baked goods. The food is made from REAL ingredients, and the quality is top-notch. Among my favorites are the Danish pastries (all varieties), the chocolate croissants, ciabattattini, and many of the crusty breads and baguettes! The raspberry / chocolate chip muffins are wonderful, especially when warm. They also have delectable pies, cream puffs, tarts, and chocolate creations. If you are disappointed with supermarket baked products, you definitely want to give this place a try. If you are HAPPY with supermarket baked products, you might stick with them- or you might discover a whole new world of what real bread really is all about. This place is heaven for those who love real quality breads, pastries, muffins, and hand-crafted desserts. They accept credit cards, cash, and checks. There are 1 or 2 2-seat tables inside for enjoying purchases, and a tiny bathroom (not w/c accessible (though the bakery is). Also a few small table/chairs outside. read more

*The* place to buy *real* bread in Lexington. I almost hate to tell you my favorite bread there, but I guess I should share the secret. The Bavarian Rustic is wonderful. It's a whole grain bread that is not sweet! (I don't understand why most whole wheat or whole grain breads everywhere else are sweet.) At any rate, the Bavarian Rustic is the bomb! Unfortunately, it's only available on Tuesdays, so I rarely get a chance to get one. (I believe that Jim sells out of these most Tuesdays.) Usually, when I manage to go to the Bluegrass bakery to buy a Bavarian Rustic, I buy two loaves, because it freezes like a dream. Another favorite is the German Rye. It's a rye bread without caraway seeds. Many people are unaware that the flavor of rye bread they detest is actually the flavor of the caraway seeds that are found in just about every rye bread in Lexington stores. Try Bluegrass Bakery's German Rye sometime and you may find that you actually like rye bread. Then of course, there is the little demi baguette that's great with just a little butter or "green stuff" (=an avocado, cream cheese, garlic paste)... but I digress. Stop by Bluegrass sometime.
