The one thing that stood out (not in a good way) was the imitation crab. It tasted like it had been previously frozen... kind of cold, a little dry, and not that soft, fresh texture you'd hope for. Price-wise, it ended up being a little over $30 with tip, which breaks down to about $10 per roll (6 pieces each). That felt a bit on the higher side for the quality, but I will say I couldn't even finish everything because it was pretty filling. For one person, it's a decent amount of food, but I think this deal would be even better if you split it with someone so you can try a few things without overordering. Our go to place for sushi since we moved back to the AV from the SCV over ten years now. Always the same great taste. We usually go when it first opens during the week so the ambiance is relaxing-which I love because I usually like to escape the daily hustle and bustle. Though our normal two waiter and waitress is no longer there, service still remains consistent-from ordering our food, getting our food to our table and refilling our drinks. I ordered the dinner box and picked the spicy tuna roll, sushi pieces, and sashimi pieces. The fish tasted a little off. I'm used to sushi that kind of melts in your mouth, but this fish felt tough not fresh. The fish to rice ratio on the sushi pieces were very off. It was a lot of rice. My fave sushi spot in the AV! We had a really nice experience there today. We sat at the bar and ordered 2 orders of the 3-roll Bar Special. The orders were similar, but one roll was different for one order. When they served it, they gave us the same order for both. I pointed out that we ordered the Blue Maki roll instead of the Baked Salmon. We said that it was fine, but the guy that took our order insisted that they make the missing Blue Maki roll for us. I eventually had to ask a waiter if I was going to receive them. Shortly after, another guest sat next to me and was immediately given water, ginger, and wasabi--items I never received btw. He was served right away, while I was not. What bothered me most was that I was given my check without even asking for it. I'm usually a good tipper, but tonight the service did not reflect that. The staff only interacted with me three times: to take my order, deliver my food, and drop off the check. This was my first time dining alone, and unfortunately, the experience was ruined. I ate at blue maki on 7/16/25 and shortly after my boyfriend and I both became violently ill which resulted in me having to go to the ER a few days later. My lab test results came back positive for Campylobacter bacteria. Blue maki was the only thing that I ate that day so I am 100% positive that the fish I consumed was contaminated. I requested NO SEEDS as my husband has a medical condition with a seed allergy. I never thought I would be writing this bad review for a great sushi place like this one. My fiancé and I have been coming here to share delicious sushi rolls for some time now and we always like to get the 3 roll special at the bar. The food is always delicious and other servers have been courteous to recommend this special for us to share. That wasn't the case today. We came in early and it was just my fiancé and I getting our usual. Excited to share and eat, as we were placing our order the server told us we couldn't share the 3 roll special. They recommended different offers which consist of us getting more food. We were stunned honestly and at one point we just wanted to leave. We ended up getting the 3 roll special and 2 miso soups. We finished the miso soups and then the rolls came in. I noticed immediately my wife wasn't eating with me and refused to take any part of the meal because the server kept looking over at her making my fiancé feel really uncomfortable and it ruined the nice peaceful vibe that we have came to love about this place. I felt uncomfortable eating without her so we decided to take the entire order to go. The server that was supposed to help us out didn't even get us the check, didn't provide even minimum service to refill our basic waters, didn't bother getting us a to go box and didn't even say "have a nice day" or anything. Not sure if she's new but definitely needs to be retrained and shown better. We will no longer be coming here until the service quality improves read more
