Our Lilah was 18 years old and had kidney disease and hyperthyroidism for 3 years. Having cats before, I knew it was futile to fight old age and disease. I gave her, her meds, but I wanted to be accepting that cats don't live forever. Interestingly, Lilah kept kicking despite the disease. She kept going along, and I knew one day I would know when it was time. Lilah was a consummate house cat. She was perfectly happy being indoors, with a warm place to sleep and nothing exciting going on. And so, when it was time, we knew Lilah didn't want to go anywhere. She just wanted to be home, with us cuddled around her. BluePearl made the process so easy. From the online appointment system (because, who wants to call a place to say those words 'i'd like to make an appointment to euthanize my cat?!) to the vet who came so compassionately. Lilah didn't even notice anything was going on, which was amazing because she didn't need any more stress. The vet walked in so gently and explained everything to us so compassionately, and allowed the process to be so amazingly peaceful. Even when it was time to take her away, she wrapped her delicately in this fluffy bed, so respectfully. Yes, it was pricey, but it was totally worth it. Ten years ago I tried another "traveling doctor" who couldn't find the correct dose of medication and I saw my large mixed breed dog suffer enormously in her last minutes on earth. This is my first time doing end-of-life planning for a loved one and nothing will change the fact that I am an absolute wreck right now, but this consult helped ease my decision stress over whether I'm doing the right thing for my cat. The information I got will probably save many hours I would otherwise have spent on fruitless phone calls, waiting in phone queues, and agonizing over how to tell if he needs to go to the ER. I just had a quality of life virtual consult with Dr. Diane Eigner for my old kitty with multiple chronic health conditions and I'm so glad I did. I was extremely stressed about spending another $200 for this consult, but it was very helpful (and will save me from some unnecessary medical expenses) to have the full, unhurried presence of an expert who was there to prioritize my cat's happiness and answer my questions about what comes next while I was waiting on my upcoming appointment with my primary care. Dr. Eigner helped me understand the next potential treatment options that a specialist might recommend for my cat's conditions, which was really helpful in understanding how my decisions will impact his quality of life. We also went over the limitations and options for vet house calls and why it's complicated (info which is impossible to find online), how to advocate for ways to reduce his stress at the ER, and how to make end of life decisions if things didn't improve. She gave me some homework to chart his quality of life and improve his home environment. One really helpful thing was that she looked at him and gave me tips on how to evaluate his respiration and how it relates to what's going on inside his body. After all, some types of abnormal breathing are a medical emergency, and some are just that he's exhausted from anemia and is waiting for the pharmacy to send his medication. This is something the ER unfortunately just doesn't have time to educate you about, they'll just say "come in immediately if anything is abnormal", and I'm trying to minimize the stress of the ER for him unless he actually needs a procedure they can do for him. I felt really seen by Dr. Eigner because she has a cat right now who is going through a similar collection of chronic conditions, so she was really able to share empathy for the hard decisions I am making right now. read more

His sympathy and calm bedside manner gave us an intimate and stress-free ending to our Annie's life. He carefully provided us an in-depth understanding as to the conditions that brought Annie to her end. Please note that we had our feral kitty euthanized at our local vet four months ago. That experience was far too impersonal, clinical, unfamiliar and it lacked the empathy Dr. Scott presented to us. In our minds, the thought of having Annie euthanized was more like being sentenced to death; however, we were relieved by Dr. Scott's explanation that Annie was near her death based on her fastly declining physical condition. At no time were we rushed and Dr. Scott went out of his way to allow us ample time to grieve. In calm and simple words, Dr. Scott made it clear that Annie's death was imminent. With his assistance, our Annie died at 3:02 pm yesterday afternoon, peacefully in our arms, without stress and anxiety, warm in her bed. It was a magnificent passing if that makes sense? I cannot overstate how satisfied I am with this service. Saying goodbye to a pet is never easy, and I dreaded the assumed legwork I would need to do for euthanasia (as well as the actual process too). After some research, I realized it was a comparable price to euthanize at home versus the vet's office, and WAY MORE COMFORTABLE. Booking was so easy, the visit was dignified and respectful, and the support services are great. Our dog was elderly, weak, and got very anxious/confused when out of her element - thus, vet visits were a traumatic experience for everyone involved. We opted for home burial because of this, but I would recommend for any pet regardless of anxiety level. Hopefully we will not need this service for a long time, but I hope to euthanize at home versus a vet's office from now on, just based on this experience. We opted to bury our pet ourselves, so I cannot comment on the process after the event itself. Our cat had reached the end of his life, but due to covid restrictions our normal vet (who is fantastic) was not able to allow us in so we could be with him while he passed. We reached out to multiple services but Pet Hospice was the only one that was able to work with us. They were extremely caring on the phone, took care of everything online in advance, and got us an appointment quick so our poor kitty wouldn't suffer. Putting down our cat was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but it was made a lot better by how kind and caring Pet Hospice was.
