If you asked me yesterday, I would have said I don't like ribs. Turns out I just haven't had good ones! I cleaned the ribs at Blues City Cafe and wanted more! Their restaurant has fun colorful window paintings outside, and inside it's larger than it appears. I went for "the best meal on Beale Street" because I wanted to try the ribs and catfish. It's a huge meal, and even though they sell a larger one for two people you could easily split one. The ribs were the star of the show- cooked perfectly, they really did fall off the bone. The sauce was amazing too. The catfish was great, but I'm a sucker for hush puppies, and theirs are fantastic. I also loved the boiled new potatoes. If I lived in Memphis I think I would gain 20 pounds because I would eat ribs from Blues City Cafe at least once a week! read more

My wife and I were traveling back from Chicago after our daughter's boot camp graduation and stopped in Memphis along the way. It was around 10:20 pm, and we were honestly just happy to find a place that was still open. I wish I could remember our server's name because she was incredible. She kept calling us "my dears," which made us feel right at home, and she even made me a Thin Mint shot (Rumple and Baileys). After a long day of traveling, that was exactly what I needed. We shared the ribs and the fried catfish plate, and both were outstanding. The ribs fell right off the bone -- tender, juicy, and not dry at all. The dry rub was great on its own, but the BBQ sauce paired perfectly and really enhanced the flavor. The meat could easily stand alone, but the sauce took it to that next level. My wife loved the catfish -- juicy inside with a perfectly crispy outside! She also enjoyed the hush puppies (I'm usually not a fan, but these were good). Overall, if you're in Memphis and want a great late-night meal, this is the spot. Great vibes, excellent service, and a welcome change from Chicago. The ribs are amazing. We had the stuffed mushrooms, they are so good. Rib plate with coleslaw and beans are some of the best I have ever had. We had fries, and sprinkled the special seasoning on them, everything was amazing. I wish I could have saved enough room for the apple dumpling. Amazing spot and great location, super close to the FedEx forum! We came here after the Lakers vs. Grizzlies game because the kitchen is open late. The live music was amazing and the food was also amazing! Portion sizes are large and prices are affordable considering the quality and the amount of food you receive. My only complaint (and this may definitely be because they were very busy after the game) is that we didn't get everything we asked for. I asked for double Texas toast, no slaw and received no Texas toast at all. At this point in the night and after all the drinks/festivities, toast is all I had on my mind so I was incredibly disappointed when there wasn't any. We had a perfect experience, all the way across the board. The food was excellent, the service was impeccable, and the ambiance was delightful. Since I had never been here before, it was a pleasant surprise. We're staying at the Canopy hotel just up the street, and we found this place online. My girlfriend joined me for dinner, and she enjoyed the Caesar salad. She also tried some of my green beans, which were really good. I had the catfish platter along with the green beans and potatoes, and everything was perfect. As we scoped out the dessert section, we noticed they have pecan pie and ice cream. Yum! But why were they not slammed busy I asked myself? I ordered a green house salad, that was overlooked and never arrived. I ordered a full each of ribs with no sides, yet it came with beans, Cole slaw, fries and a piece of toast. Most of which was wasted. The ribs were definitely good. Just good and nothing special. I wasn't asked if I wanted them wet or dry. I wasn't asked if I wanted sauce or not. When the ribs arrived, they weren't exactly hot, just warm. Not wet, just as though they had been sitting, under a heat lamp, waiting for someone to buy them. Lastly, the decor was what I expected for a cafe. Straightforward with a city vibe. All in all, it wasn't a bad experience, but it was pretty far from my best. The food was edible, the restaurant was clean. Most of the staff were complaining about lack of business and how slow they are. I'd give a hint, stop complaining in open space, and listen more closely to your customers request, only serve your customer what they ask for, and lastly look at the bill to make sure your customer received what you are charging them for! I'm on the fence if I will return because of so many other options and that's hard to say. For me this experience was barely a three. A person named Christian took care of us and had our food, shot and whiskeys there in a matter of minutes. Inside, it is a bit loud but good enough to have a conversation without issues. I tried the fried cat fish. The amount of food that was enormous, so I had a lot of leftovers. The flavor was amazing. So I did the uber takeout and since I was staying at the hotel nearby, it took me less than 30 min to get the food. So the ribs was amazing. Soft, gender, and the meat slipped off of bones. In fact, bones were breaking into pieces so you can imagine how tender the meat was cooked. Steak fries were enormous and good. Not too shabby about the cole slaw and the big thick toast was stale. No comment on pork and beans since it's not my favorite food ans I have nothing to really base my opinion on. But I would def come back to have the half rack ribs.
