Stopped in while on a walk with a friend because we wanted to ruin our dinner appetite with pastries. We are both downtowners but have never visited this coffee shop so we thought it'd be worthwhile to check it out. I got an apple fritter and my friend got some type of pastry with Nutella filling and almonds on top. I didn't realize it until after we left the coffee shop, but we stopped in about 8 minutes before closing. The employee didn't rush us at all and even offered to warm our pastries in the microwave. Both pastries were delicious! Having them heated was very nice. I also noticed that this coffee shop has free wifi and various loaves of baked bread for sale. And they have dairy free options for coffee/tea! Customer service was great- friendly demeanor and no rushing- and delicious pastries. I'll be back! read more

Came home for a long weekend and decided to visit as many local coffee shops as I could while I am here. Bluff City Coffee is the third one I have been to. The place looks ok. Kinda anywhere USA coffee shop. I got there right at opening time (even though they still opened up 10 minutes late). The guy behind the counter was not very friendly. He wasn't rude or anything, just not friendly. It kinda felt like Dick Cheney was taking my order. I ordered a sausage egg and cheese croissant, and a latte. The sandwich was good, and the latte was very good. The barista (a young lady), did a very good job on the latte. They didn't ask me if it was for here or to go, they just gave me a paper cup. Others came in, and got mugs (I assume it is because they are regulars, and they know what they normally get.) This wasn't a big deal, but the reason I bring it up is because they have a jar asking for your sleeves so they can re-use them. I am all for that, but it would be easier if they'd just asked if I wanted a mug in the first place. Overall, I would go back there if I was nearby, but I wouldn't make a special trip to go there. read more

It's always hard to admit to not being hip, but I like regular old coffee, the kind that a waitress named Betty serves up from an aged Bunn drip system down at the diner. Ordering a large regular coffee here was a different experience, because Bluff City only does expresso and a regular coffee is watered down expresso - It's called Americano (just so you will know, in case you find yourself in this situation) and was quite good. The atmosphere here is comfortable, outdoor tables are nice, weather permitting, and acoustics were good for a meeting inside of about 10 people I attended. read more

Cute little place in the heart of Memphis. Love this part of town for its history and western appeal. The cafe is perfectly located by a few shops and restaurants. I had the latte which was good and the Nutella Danish. I love Nutella but the latter was ok. Tasted like a mix of cheese and Nutella but overly sweet and the pastry wasn't crunchy or puffy. Far and away, this is my favorite coffee shop in Memphis. It's much more relaxed and work friendly than the other shops I've been to, plus they have the 'Duffin'. The duffin is what happens when a muffin and a donut make a baby, and it is one heck of a baby that they made. There is free wifi (just ask for the password), outdoor seating, sandwiches, pastries, cakes, and a lot of options to suit whatever you like to do to your coffee. Truth be told, I don't know much about coffee. However, I have really enjoyed the several different kinds I've had there, and find the price to be reasonable. The variation in seating options makes it ideal for any situation. Whether you're grabbing coffee with a friend, working on the laptop, reading a book, or just trying to collect yourself with a coffee, there's a seating arrangement perfect for you available. I think this is an underrated part of many coffee shops, and I think Bluff City actively planned to account for every customer's needs. Bluff City Coffee is a total package when it comes to coffee shops, and the 'Duffin' is the bow on top. What are you waiting for? Go get the duffin! read more

Adore this place!! I'm a latte person when I'm going out for coffee, and always know a good spot by the number of unique flavor choices they offer; Bluff City definitely checks that box. It's also surprisingly hard to find a coffee shop with a quality breakfast sandwich on their menu, but we firmly rely on Bluff City for a delicious sammy every time (and, their biscuits are some of the best I've had in Memphis). read more

Everything here is great. The coffee, the treats, the atmosphere... I believe everything is baked fresh on site. The difference is obvious. Prices aren't too bad. There's really no such thing as a "cheap" coffee shop anymore. Prices are competitive. The only reason they are getting a four and not a five is that they close way too early, and they are inexplicably closed early during events like River Arts Fest. I tried to go there today, and they had closed even earlier than usual. Do they not want my money? I know there isn't a lot going on downtown week nights, but there is an art school right next door. Staying open til 7 or 8 couldn't hurt. Anyway, I highly recommend. Just get there early, and if you work across town, forget it for weekdays. read more

I want to love this place because it is the closest to my apartment and I want to support local but I may have given it my last chance (of many!). The baristas are the rudest around! You will get much better service and friendlier faces at any Starbucks! Their espresso machine seems to always be down and everything is just over priced for the quality. The price and espresso machine being down are all things I could get over, but the constant rudeness is just not okay! They act like it is a major inconvenience for you to be a paying customer! If I were you I would walk down a little farther to the coffee shop in 387 or Java Cabana in 409. That's where I'll be going from now on. read more

Dare I say I am more of a tea drinker? (I do and just did) That being said, I did in fact go for a coffee here recently and it was honestly one of the best coffees I have had in a long time. I dono if it was simply the fact that I hadn't had coffee in a while, but regardless, I was quite impressed. I am by no means a coffee expert, but I know what's good, and this coffee is good. The place itself is cozy, with a few larger tables in the back. There is a sort of communal row in the front which also works well. Overall the internals of the place make ya wanna hang out for a while, and I believe that is the goal. The other standout were the pastries being offered. Not your standard fare (although some of those were available) by any means, with us getting a savory pie (kinda like a empanada but much thinner crust) and some sort of cherry muffinish kinda thing. One of the busiest coffee shops I've seen in town, packed with all kinds of people coming and going while swapping stories and doing business. Service was great, AC was a little weak, but that's possibly from people coming in and out so often. Plenty of outlets all over the place, though the volume of users seemed to weigh down the wifi connection. Unfortunately, the latte was a bust. Didn't have much flavor and the texture was weird, almost like milk heated in a microwave with none of the espresso coming through. I would have to say that I preferred Starbucks lattes to this. I'll give 'em another shot in the future, but there seem to be better options just a bit up Main. read more

I'm a morning coffee person, and get a little tired if being relegated to the same old Starbucks every week, when I travel for work. And sue me if I want to occasionally drink from a nice large mug, rather than a paper cup. On a recent trip to Memphis, I searched downtown, where I was staying, to find a non-chain alternative. So this is what came up, and had some solid reviews. I went with the basic Americano, and it was top notch. I also added a pastry, and blueberry yogurt muffin, that turned out to be pretty awesome too. I'm not sure if they're made in house, but I highly recommend. Another nice bonus is that you can just hop on the trolley if you are downtown, and get dropped off right at the place. If you are staying in downtown Memphis, or even work down there and have time to grab coffee for 30 minutes, this should be your place! read more

Great addition to the trendy South Main corridor. Free wifi, reasonable prices, enough seating, good service. Drip coffee was a quality dark toast, without any bitterness. The chai was in the American style of sweet with a little cinnamon flavor and very mellow. read more

We stopped in the place to get a espresso and sandwich. Bad idea. Wish I had read the reviews first. The lady ringing us up was nice enough but when I ordered a sandwich the man behind her interrupted to say that he was only making breakfast because he wanted to close the kitchen soon, although it was 3pm on a Saturday. We orders some pastries, which were stale and not very tasty. The place is dirty and they leave dirty silverware sitting vinegar by the trash which makes the place stink horribly. The owner in particular is incredibly nice, the food is decent, and the coffee is excellent. Real Italian sodas (and Italian cream sodas) make it difficult not to seriously screw up your diet here. Emailed the establishment about the service only to be give a corporate drive performance answer and being advised that they have substandard back office business practices that seemed weird. I stumbled upon Bluff City Coffee when I was visiting Memphis last month. The staff were really friendly, the coffee was delicious, and the atmosphere made it a perfect place for studying. Comfy couches, awesome historic pictures on the wall (although looking at them got me to daydreaming - I'm a historian), and good music. Location is perfect - walking distance to the Civil Rights Museum, a trolley ride away from Beale Street, and close to lots of neat shops and art galleries. Paid a lot for not a lot. $8 for an ok sandwich and a 10-minute wait (even though no one was in front of me). I was ok with waiting a while for my change as trainee rung me up, but it should not take 2 minutes to count out my change. I found this coffee shop after I visited the Civil Rights Museum. They had a good selection of drinks and pastries which was hard to choose from but eventually I chose a bagel with cream cheese and an iced coffee which both hit the spot. I was sightseeing and it was hot so it was nice to cool off and charge up my phone before I headed to Nashville. It's a great spot to relax and study. read more

We were visiting from out of town and had rented a place in the neighborhood. We were excited to have a local coffeehouse nearby but ended up being disappointed. The baked goods were terrible and dry. We order a couple items and struck out on all of them. We had an iced latte (incredibly bitter) and two hot lattes, one with scorched milk.
