One star purely based on service. After enquiring thrice they still managed to mess up my vegetarian sandwich with my friend's chicken sandwich. It was NOT at all busy that day that they could plead that excuse. Thanks to you I ended up eating meat and spent the entire day feeling gross and sick. Stopped in early morning before work and after the gym to grab a bagel sandwich. Waited outside for a bit as I arrived early. Ordered the salmon bagel. When I got to the office it was a little unlike what I expected it to be. Instead of the typical bagel, cream cheese, salmon, capers (+/- onions and tomatoes), it was a bagel with boursin cheese, salmon and a tomato and cucumber salsa. We (my coworker and I) ordered a late lunch and while the food wasn't really that amazing the customer service and the cookie and brownie were life changing! Ok so first the food, we got "the loaf" and a goat cheese salad. The sandwich was ok and the salad was ehhh. It wasn't bad but I would for sure want to try something else next time we ordered. It wasn't bad but it wasn't something that would stick in my mind to want to order again. Now the customer service, they were awesome! We ordered off of Caviar and they called us to let us know they saw our note about the tomatoes and they didn't take them out and wanted to know if we wanted something else. They didn't have to call but they wanted to make it right and I we both thought it was awesome they did that! Ok now the cookie...wow! It was probably the best cookie I've ever had (aside from my moms because well family!) It was still warm when I got it which I mean come on who doesn't love a warm chocolate chip cookie?? It was gooey and crunchy and just really freakin good! My coworker liked his brownie said it was more like fudge than a brownie and ate it all in probably 2 bites! This is the BEST breakfast sandwich in Boston. I got a sausage egg and cheese on an everything bagel and it blew my socks off. My boyfriend got the same but on the hearty roll with chipotle aioli. Amazing. Just amazing. Will often go and buy two breakfast sandwiches just so I can save one for later. Small hole in the wall joint that's won multiple awards and has a random day they are closed so check before heading over. Seems like a regular spot for Boston Medical center employees because I always see people in scrubs picking up sandwiches. It's pretty easy to find street parking in the area on the weekends and the orders are made quickly so you can risk not paying the meter or parking without a resident sticker for a couple mins. I called on a snowy morning to check if this amazing little place was open... Lo and behold it was! I came across this place by sheer accident and I am so happy I did! After reading a few review about how amazing the bagelwiches are and reading an article about the top 50 places to visit in Boston, I had to try it! We came in and were immediately greeted in this quiet corner cafe on a snowy Monday morning. We were told about all the menu items and we decided to select the Everything BLTC with egg on it! Great decision! The food was amazing! This tall sandwich was stabbed with a stick and full of flavor! We also order the triple got chocolate which I most certainly would recommend (especially with marshmallows on top). My friend ordered the American which he thoroughly enjoyed. The vibe and atmosphere made for the ultimate experience! The cream of the crop however was the giant chocolate chip cookie which is what enticed me to the place in the first place. The cookie was crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside! The perfect cookie! You need one of these! I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for breakfast or lunch or both! AMAZING A REALLY awesome place to grab a quick lunch in the South End! I went at peak time on a weekday, and was eating within 15 minutes. There are only a handful of seats, but most people grab-and-go, so there'll probably be a seat available for you if you'd like one. The service was TOP-NOTCH, when I was there, it was extremely busy, and despite them having a computer glitch and all heck breaking loose, the staff was EXTREMELY helpful and very friendly! The place just has a really nice atmosphere to it too, it feels really local, very homey, but also not intimidating for people who might not be so close to home. That's not even mentioning the food! Which was PHENOMENAL. I had the Lower East Side Sandwich Anne a homemade cookie, both of which were exceptional!! I'll be coming back next time I'm in the South End for SURE!! read more

Oh man guys. How have I not known this was here for so long! All the wasted years! I have found it. The best chocolate chip cookie in boston. And it's right here in this humble little sandwich shop. Before we get to the drool-worthy cookie, a few notes. -Great friendly service, even to the horrible woman in front of me who kept pestering them about gluten free preparation and would the cheese melt properly and would they just check on the cheese for her and are they sure it's gluten free? (Nothing against people with an allergy, she was just terrible.) -Yummy sandwiches. I got the Big Papi, which on the menu said was ham and swiss and a chipotle sauce and pickles, but what I got was definitely turkey and the same. I like turkey, so it wasn't a problem but it was still different from what I ordered. -Tiny indoor space, maybe 7 seats tops, at a bar facing the window. -The cookies go fast during lunch. Ok, the cookie. Thick and doughy without that undercooked texture, but so much softer than your average cookie, it was clearly baked in some magical kind of sky kingdom cloud oven. You can just taste it. Then come the chocolate chips. Dark, semi-sweet and milk blending together in a chocolate symphony of different-sized, perfectly spaced chocolate chips so that every bite CONTAINS chocolate but not ONLY chocolate. Obviously a trade-secret ratio handed down from Zeus' own kitchen. Perfect size, large enough to tip you into a heavy-lidded sugar euphoria, but not small enough to tempt you on another back-to-back. Blunch is open for breakfast and lunch (go figure) offering coffee, bagels, sandwiches, etc. The place is cute - reminded me of a kitchen you'd see on TV for a cooking show. I ordered an onion bagel with garlic & herb cream cheese...I pretty much inhaled it on my walk back to my apartment since it smelled too good to ignore. Tucked away at the end of a residential street in the South End, just across from Boston Medical Center, it's kind of off the beaten path for a brunch spot. This cozy cafe is perfect for a casual Saturday brunch with your best girl/boy friend, or even better if you are solo--just grab one of the counter spots facing the street and people watch to your heart's content while sipping locally roasted coffee. The food is so comforting; it's got a gourmet flair but still tastes home-y and made with love. The owner took our orders patiently despite our hemming and hawing with indecision...it's just so hard to decide when you have so many tempting soup, salad, sandwich and pastry options before you! I wish more cafes would serve breakfast/lunch all day... After waffling between a breakfast eggwich and one of the creative lunch sandwiches, I ordered the Loaf--a supremely satisfying combo of ground beef meatloaf, melted Fontina cheese and sweet roasted tomatoes sandwiched on grilled white Texas toast. All it was missing was perhaps a handful of chips. My two girlfriends ordered bagel-wiches which were stuffed with perfect egg frittatas and their choice of toppings. We lingered over brunch and fantasized about moving to the South End just so we could visit Blunch more frequently without the hassle of finding ever elusive parking. I was Blunched. And I liked it. I liked it a lot. Today after Julie T.'s long surgery next door I insisted that we drag her doped up ass to Blunch for some much needed lunch. After 6 hours of sitting in the hospital almost within eye sight of Blunch, I was determined to finally go try this place out. It sits on a corner street on Harrison and is a wonderful hidden gem. The service was great and the employees were very friendly! We had a car and parking was difficult but I normally just walk or bike. My friend and I had both were overwhelmed by the massive menu. All we wanted to do was order an eggwich, and that we did. Mine was moist, warm egg on a toasted everything bagel with goat cheese and in-house roasted tomatoes that were exploding with juicy flavor! It was herby, cheesy and delicious! Julie T. had a sausage, egg (with spicy!) and cheese. Hers looked delicious as well! They had hot and iced coffee that was self-serve which was cool! Today, I was a "lady who lunches" (or rather, "blunches"). I had the day off and the weather is gorgeous so Flynn and I took a walk to meet my husband for lunch. Lunch options are limited when you have a dog with you and your husband only has about 30 minutes for lunch, so we ended up here. I loved everything about it this place. It's tiny and the menu is fairly limited but it covers all of the basics, plus a few more. He had the Papi (something with ham) & I had the Bird (something with chicken, as I'm sure you could tell by the name). It was delicious and quite large - I could only eat half. Since I'm not a true "lady who lunches" - just a 9-5er with a day off, I doubt I'll make it back to Blunch very often, but my husband eats there all the time. It made me wish there was a place like this way out in Watertown...sigh. read more

With the opening of this place, I was excited to see the South End creeping into, well, more of the South End. Down in the south South End, the neighborhood isn't quite yet the homogenous yuppie wasteland that some people call it. And that's fine by me. I like the assortment of pizza-burger-gyro places conveniently located across the street. Not to eat at, but to walk past. I'll admit, though, that moving Flour just a few blocks closer would make a BIG difference. Especially with the blizzards. Enter Blunch. Or, Flour-lite. It's a tiny place on the corner of Harrison and Springfield, directly across the street from BMC. Walking through their front door isn't all that much different from entering through the back door of somebody's kitchen, but in a good way. There's seating for about 15--bar stools only--with an unobstructed view of the neighborhood action. Like Flour, the menu's written on a chalkboard in the back. Breakfast goods, sandwiches, salads and soups dominate. I had "The Colonial," featuring a mix of new and old world favorites: smoked turkey, cucumbers, Swiss cheese, greens, and berry preserves on multi grain wheat bread. It sounded like Flour's turkey cranberry chutney, so I tried. The bread was conventional sliced bread, but the fillings were generous. I also got a freshly-baked peanut butter chocolate cookie, which wasn't bad. I'll be back to try the soups. And, GOOD NEWS: they're dog-friendly! Just a quick update here... The Provencal is officially THE (not one of the) best sandwich I've ever had. I challenge anyone to find me a better one. If I could eat one every day (and not turn into a giant beast), I would. I really do like the other cafes and sandwich shops in the area (Flour, Stella Cafe, etc.) but the Provencal blows all of their sandwiches out of the water. This tiny place packs a lot of flavor!!! I stopped in because I could resist a selection from the daily whim board. I had a bagel sandwich with some tasty ingredients: pressed onion bagel, mini sausage patties, provolone cheese, egg, and last but not least spicy cherry peppers!! I don't think I would have ever thought of this combo myself and now that I have eaten it I can't wait to try the other creative selections that Blunch has to offer. Disclaimer: I rate places based on how well I think they're meeting their goals and my standards - not necessarily based on how they fare against each other. If you're going to a diner expecting fine dining, and you rate the diner accordingly, you're just being mean - not to mention unrealistic. With that in mind, Blunch kicks it out of the park. One of the best features of blunch is its atmosphere. Stepping in the door of this true neighborhood joint, I feel like I'm suddenly transported to a Paris hole-in-the-wall bistro - complete with background music and window seating for basically everyone. And the food measures up, too: lighter fare, with salads, fluffy egg sandwiches, and the owner's "whimsical" sandwich creations... not to mention a fun assortment of drinks and pastries. I wish I could visit more often - and it's a huge disappointment that they're not open on summer weekends - but I can't hold that against them. read more

My buddies/workmates and I had lunch here today, and I have nothing but good things to say. I have never felt so welcomed by an eating establishment (not that the south end is always so particularly "friendly"), or so much like I could care less what the food might be like, just because the service was so wonderful. Thankfully, the food was GREAT! Really great. There were a nice collection of meat and vegetarian sandwiches, soup specials, egg sandwiches, and baked goods, and each of us chose something different (as well as a plethora of treats!). Sadly, they were out of pickles. Not sadly, I got to try a different sandwich, and my friend opted for the suggested replacement of cucumbers and italian peppers. The lunch fare may be even better. It's b'lunch, duh) they feature a daily "whim" sandwich and soup. Today I found their "Dinner Party" pressed sandwich featured. smoked turkey, brie, green apple, cranbery-ginger relish... all on fresh, pressed bread. It was amazing and makes me wish this was a staple on their menu... then again, I'm excited to see what they offer tomorrow. Working at the hospital across the street has allowed me to try pretty much every sandwich Nikki offers (call me old fashioned but I can't bring myself to eat a vegi burger). Breakfast: The bagels are fresh and toasted on the grill. I usually get a toasted onion or everything bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon. The coffee there actually tastes like coffee (foreign concept to Dunkies and Starbucks). And because its first thing in the morning I can't resist her fresh baked, just out of the oven, still piping hot muffins. Vanilla muffin with raspberry or strawberry is as close to heaven on earth as anyone can get. Lunch: Since I've tried all her sandwiches I love and look forward to the Whim of the Day. If you ever see the Girls Club or the Cuban I highly suggest you get it. My favorite menu sandwiches are the Big Papi, The Bird, The Beef, The Colonial, The Fish, The Wilbur, The Giving Tree, The Lower East Side, The Delovely, and The Piglett. This is not taking away from any of the other sandwiches, they are all great. A great thing about Nikki is that she can cater to people with food allergies. I went with my friend who has wheat allergies but really wanted the Giving Tree. Nikki made it into a salad and all was happy in the land of Blunch! Snacks/Drinks: Its all about the chocolate chip cookies. I have been fortunate enough to have a chocolate chip cookie topped with peanut butter, nutella, and raspberry sauce. Sensory overload. The brownies and bread pudding are great as well. The bread pudding comes with a topping. I've seen peanut butter, raspberry syrup, and espresso syrup. All worthy toppings of such a great snack. Then there is the cooler of drinks. Oh me, oh my. This place is amazing! It's a really small location (can barely sit 10 people), and mainly for take-out. The hours are very limited, so it's mainly for late breakfast and lunch, and closed for dinner. That being said, I have ordered the desserts and 2 of the sandwiches here. The chocolate chip cookies are AMAZING! Especially if you can get a fresh batch. They sell out quickly but they keep making fresh batches. Also, once they made a Reese's brownie and it was really good. Sandwich-wise, my favorite is the Boca. It's an awesome sandwich with peppers, their home-made sauce (like a chipotle sauce), arugula, and a boca burger. The veggie burger is REALLY good, and so is this sandwich. I have also gotten the melt-down, which is basically grilled cheese on crack (4 types of cheese grilled on their bread), and you can't go wrong with it. One warning I would give, however, would be to assume that ordering and getting the food will take at least 10 mins because it's usually very crowded. This is an update and an upgrade. I love this place!! The only downside is there is not a lot of seating space but you can't expect to host numerous people in a tiny spot. I typically call in my order, pick up my sandwich and then speedwalk home because I can't wait to bite into my savory sandwich. After waking up from a long night, I was in search for a place to seriously recuperate with some refreshing breakfast/brunch. Funnily enough Blunch turned up on my Yelp! search and after eating there, I can now say that I'm glad I went! Situated on the corner of a street away from the usual noise, Blunch had an uplifting aura about it. It's quaint and refreshing artwork complimented the artsy vibe to this venue. I had the fluffy frittata with aioli and a roasted tomato. Highly recommend this choice as it is light, if you are on the move and rich in taste. The kitchen in the background even made the place smell inviting. The lady behind the counter said the wait would be about 10 mins, but the food took less time to get ready. Definitely a must go spot, especially if you're looking to explore the breakfast scene in Boston. read more

It's not a bad place. It's at the end of my street so that's a bonus for me. I usually swing by for some breakfast once or twice a week. Bagels are ok. It's the herb cream cheese that makes it matter. From what I've heard the owner whips it up herself. Maybe she just adds herbs to ready made cream cheese, but still, I'm impressed. The downside of it all. When the owner isn't making it- they get my order wrong 95% of the time. And that's not good for a to-go place. I see them charge me more for any of my extras ( which are written out on the menu- I'm not being crazy difficult.) but it gets lost from the cash register to the kitchen. A distance of 5 feet. Maybe less. So no matter what- check your order at the counter. Help them. Help yourself. Coffee's pretty good too. read more

Went here with a coworker to grab a bite to eat for lunch after hearing so many great things about this place. As many Yelpers have commented, this place is a shoe box. We ended up eating in the restaurant, but there aren't many seats available. For my lunch, I decided to go with the Delovely. For the price, the sandwich was actually quite large. The ingredients were all very fresh and worked well together. I felt that my particular sandwich was a little heavy on the cheese and could have used more apricot, but that's probably just the sweet tooth in me. To finish the meal, I split one of the chocolate chip cookies with my friend. The cookie itself was pretty good, but I have to admit it didn't hit as high of a mark as I was expecting after all the glory on Yelp. Overall, this place is a great option for lunch in the area and doesn't take too too long to get a sandwich, just be prepared to carryout if there is no more room to sit. read more

When I found out that I would be working (at least part time) in this part of the South End, I was a little disappointed. My first few lunch reconnaissance missions yielded pizza, Chinese food, and some chains, so I despaired of ever finding a good neighborhood place that wouldn't make me feel like I swallowed a bag of grease coated anvils by mid-afternoon. Then I discovered Blunch while out on a walk and found the type of lunch place I had been looking for. Blunch is tiny, although I've always been able to sit down at one of their counters if I was feeling like I needed to get out of the office for a bit. With its location across from BMC, they do a brisk take-out business. There seem to be a lot of regulars, as the owner and staff recognize most people when they come in. Since I wait and order there instead of calling something in, I usually have a 5-10 minute wait for my food, but everyone is so nice and friendly that I can't really say I mind. I love the fact that Blunch serves breakfast all day, and they certainly deliver with a delicious egg and cheese sandwich that has always been cooked perfectly. I usually get a breakfast sandwich in the interest of being "good," but their desserts look fresh and delicious, and I'm always tempted by the brownies and cookies. I did try one of the daily special paninis which was a breaded eggplant with cheese and roasted red peppers. I'm not a huge fan of red peppers, so I pulled some of them off of the sandwich (which was gigantic enough that I couldn't finish it). Since I had elected to eat it at Blunch, the owner noticed and mentioned that next time she would remember not to put peppers on mine, which I thought was incredibly sweet and great customer service! The sandwich was still delicious, so I reassured her that the peppers really weren't a big deal. I've never been bowled over by the coffee at Blunch, but I don't consider it a coffee place, so it doesn't really bother me (although I do need to try one of their iced coffees now that it is getting to be spring). With the delicious food, nice atmosphere, convenience, and friendly staff, Blunch won me over and is now my favorite lunch treat. read more
