I visited for breakfast on a Saturday with a group of 6 friends, and although it was busy early in the morning around 8:30, it got fairly empty by the time we left around 10. Service was good, but for vegans, there are only 2 food options: a simple avocado toast without any toppings on the breakfast menu or a plain impossible burger with only pickles for lunch. This was not the first time I've been to places with no respectable, filling vegan options, so I brought my own food and bought a ginger ale mocktail ($8). The mocktail tasted refreshing and sweet, and I would get it again! However it was the first time in my 5 years as a vegan that someone has come up to me and disrupted our meal to require me to put away my food, despite there not being any filling, nutritious vegan entrees. They said it was a policy because they serve alcohol, but plenty of places that serve alcohol don't openly restrict outside food especially if their menu doesn't have sufficient options for people with allergies, dietary restrictions or preferences. I had an okay brunch at Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe. I got the Florentine Benedict, and it was good - it wasn't amazing, but I did enjoy it. However, I didn't like how there were no substitutions. I did not like any of the sides that came with my order, so I asked for a side of fruit instead, but they charged me $7 extra for the fruit. It would've been nice if there were subs available, or a wider variety of sides. The servers were friendly, and as for the place itself, it is a small, old-fashioned diner - not the nicest ambience, but as good as a diner could be. So I conceded to the 2 egg plate, over medium (which I emphasized twice), with sausage patties & toast. She neglected to mention I was being charged extra for the 1 sausage patty I got, although the online menu includes sausage. I was also taken aback because the a la carte menu says 2 come to an order. The food tasted alright but the eggs weren't cooked to order and I ended up paying $18 for food I barely ate. In retrospect, I'm not surprised there were only 2 customers sitting in the restaurant. To add insult to injury, when I arrived to pick up my order & show her the online menu prices, she was singing a different tune, telling me the old owners still own the domain & she doesn't have access to update the online prices. You go inside and put your name down with the number of people in your party, then wait for them call your name. We waited not more than 15 mins on a Sunday afternoon. The turkey hash was vaguely curry tasting which was unexpected but tasty! The buttermilk biscuits and gravy sausages were good, but could've used way more meat and flavor. The biscuits were great though. The eggs Florentine are a classic for a reason, they always hit. These prices are phenomenal as well. Cool spot after our dinner at Gigis. We tried the Truffle Fries and they were cooked and seasoned to perfection, but the downfall is not serving it with any sauce (aside from ketchup). The bartender was fun to talk to and seemed to have a good relationship with all of her customers and checked on us often. It felt very local and had really cool decor across the diner. The drink menu wasn't very impressive, with no special cocktails that were really unique to the bar/restaurant itself. The prices seemed a bit high for what it was, but also not super surprising knowing the surrounding restaurants. We came on a Sunday and were surprised that there were open tables and no line, but it was nice to be seated immediately because we expected a wait based on the reviews. Our waitress was pleasant but the food was pretty mediocre. One person ordered the Norwegian omelette special, which seems to have been the best item ordered even though there was an entire slice of unmelted cheese sticking out. The breakfast burrito was ok, pretty bland flavors. The home-fries looked undercooked. Another person ordered the hangover burger and didn't have much to say about it. They have "chicken finger and waffles" and "buttermilk chicken with biscuits and gravy" so I asked if I could order the buttermilk chicken on a waffle. The waitress had to check with the kitchen, who agreed to make it "because it was slow." It was essentially a breaded chicken cutlet, sliced into strips on a waffle that looked like a DIY hotel continental breakfast one. Truly bizarre. Everything had the same colorless look. Second time, I brought my friends while visiting and got my usual - the Eggs & Cakes special. I will say, I got home fries both times and they were definitely better the second time. For a $12ish breakfast this is incredibly worth it. The third time, I went literally the day after the 2nd. I got the Hangover sandwich. Hands down the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Another issue was the portion size. I ordered the corn beef hash, which was not good and the portion was unacceptable. I also got a piece of the banana bread which cost $7.00. The piece was not even half the size of my hand and not worth the price. Banana bread should not cost that much anyways. When I called, the manager was understanding and said he would try to resolve this issue. He called back my coworker whose name the order was under and said he was trying to get in touch with his boss. He called back and his boss wanted us to take pictures of the food for proof, but we had all eaten it since we were starving. He said he would call my coworker back again once he spoke with his boss for the second time. My coworker never got a call back and the situation was never resolved. read more

Happened in to Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe for dinner on a Saturday night. It was open and every where else we went there was a wait. I thought that they would have the same menu as they do for lunch and breakfast, like an all-night diner in New York. In fact they have some "breakfast for dinner," but other than that they've got one burger and an assortment of about five dinner items. Some Italian stand-by's like Penne alla Vodka and raviolis, and some generic-restaurant dishes like chicken under a brick and seared salmon. The latter two come with "vegetable medley," which is probably not good language to use, as it suggests (to this American diner) the frozen vegetable section in the supermarket. The burger got high marks from my daughter and my wife and I had salads which were pretty good. They have a full bar--all kinds of bottles incongruously lined up along the back of the counter of this venerable greasy spoon, next to where you might expect to see see eggs and the pancake mix. It turns out the new owners since 2017 just started offering dinner last month. I wish them the best of luck. I will say I went in thinking I would get a "sandwich" for dinner and was a little disappointed there wasn't anything like that on the menu. The dessert, alas, was not good. My daughter ordered the "chocolate mousse," and we all expected chocolate mousse. What arrived was sort of a soupy chocolate pudding. But maybe that was a malfunction of some kind. read more

Might want to explore their sweet breakfast options next time i come! What a gem! So many awesome choices on the menu here in a classic diner setting. Loved it all. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and were promptly served a cup of coffee. We both had a classic combo of eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, and grits. I really enjoyed my pancakes with fruit baked in, but it was more than I could eat.
