I may need to revisit this place in the summer when it's busier in Carlsbad than January. I went in the other night to watch a NFL wildcard game and the place was pretty empty besides around the bar. The place is huge, but the bartender wouldn't leave the bar to check on anyone else(except the 10 people sitting at the bar). So after a couple of beers we just left and went a crossed the street to Coyote and drank there. I think in the summer with more people and more help this place could be cool. Who charges a cover at 9pm on a Thursday night in Carlsbad??? I knew that they often charged cover, so I called ahead (around 4pm) to find out. The woman in the bar with an Irish (ish) accent answered and told me cover started at 10pm. I figured I'd show up around 9, but had my girlfriend call again around 7 to double check. This time a man answered, assuring us that cover started at 10. We arrived at 9:10 and were told that there was a $5 per person cover. I told the bouncer that I had called ahead and my girlfriend explained that she had also called and were assured both times that cover didn't start until 10pm but the bouncer didn't care. I asked to speak to a manager and he said there were "none on duty". Hard to believe. Anyways the bouncer was a real dick and the staff seemingly lied to us (or didn't know) about the cover time. Long story short: We decided to go somewhere without a cover because, come-on, it's Carlsbad, not Vegas. EDIT: Since then I have even checked their website and their events calendar says "NO COVER TIL 10PM" on the day we went. Shady business here. Also -- while i'm on this rant: They offer $1 tiny cups of beer (not bad for $1 though) from 7:45 - 9:45 on the patio. But they go off of "Boar's time" which is about 20 minutes fast, meaning it ends around 9:25. Ironically though it always starts promptly at 7:45 / real time. read more

The good: Cheap beer out back before I believe 10, I think it was a friday night that I went and it was dollar beers on the back patio / smoking area. 4 Bars total, one bar in the back, one in the side room, and two in the main room. There was a lot of girls so my buddies were quite entertained dancing and mingling. The bad: I was DD'ing the last time we were there, so I wasn't drinking, period. I had a handle on my friends who were drinking, a lot. One of my friends was pretty drunk and the bouncer started talking to him, I went over and said that I'm his DD tonight and I'll make sure that he's ok. Nope, he needed to be thrown out of the place at that instant for "stumbling" even though he was walking fine, he just had the dumb drunk person eyes going on. After he put up a verbal fight for a bit with me at his side, the manager approached us outside and offered him free admission next time, which was cool but brings me to my next point. Cover charge: no one likes to pay to go into a bar unless there is a PPV on. The drinks at the main bar are a bit pricey and the bartenders could give 2 craps about you IMO. The clientel here is a little "off" as well. It's a strange mix of hippie / marine / gangster kids / and skater kids, kinda blows my mind a little bit. Maybe there's less hippies when they don't have a reggae band there.. which actually wasn't half bad I'll admit. The bottom line is that this place kind of makes you feel like a cattle, like you're in a huge night club in a city, but it's in Carlsbad, and it's a bar, be personable. Security and staff are rude, showing no sign of hospitality. I was told not to stand in multiple locations throughout the bar which not only made for a tense situation but directed me towards the front door immediately and out of the building. The cover fee was not worth it. read more

The bouncer was an asshole....he thought I was drunk when I only had a few beers and wouldn't let me in the club. The extent of my night.

Years ago not many places in Carlsbad had cover charges, even on Saturdays, because it's a bar town. Then places started having live music, stages, DJ's, weeknights and weekends. It's now the norm to have a minimal cover and/or dress code at non bars in Carlsbad. Boar's somehow was able to foster the N.County Hip Hop scene unlike just about every other bar around. The line can be long, the bathrooms are through the dance floor and on your way to the back patio, which closes early, but there is a main bar with 2 tenders and 2 small bars on the outside. A few booths and chairs, an ok dance floor, cheapish drinks and pool tables. A mish mosh of many features of other places near here. They usually don't have a dress code and of course you'll see the college-early 20's guys with sneakers, T's and maybe even a plaid, but the old adage. Pay the cover, your less likely to have the rif-raf, but this is an exception. read more

Sleazy bar with snobby staff and low class service. It could be a fun place if you go with a group of friends, but definitely not a place where you would want to go to meet people. These are the general rules: 1) When you go outside to smoke, do not attempt to take your drink with you. The bouncer will give you a stare down as he sees you approaching the back door with a drink in hand. He will not back down until you place it on the ledge. 2) As you place your drink on the ledge, mentally pray that no one places roofies or pees in your drink. 3) Do not open a tab using a credit card. When the bartender closes you out, she will not give you an itemized bill. Ex: $37? I only had 2 bud lights and 2 Guinness! 4) When you ask the bartender for an itemized bill, she will look at you stupidly and break down in near tears. She will then be frustrated and say, "I don't know how to do it. I am going to have to call the manager." 5) Good luck even getting your drink and tab on the weekends after 10 PM. It takes a miracle of God for this to happen. 6) Be patient when the bartender repeatedly ignores you. She is too busy and you are just another dumb drunk she has to deal with. Follow these rules and you should be able to have a good time. read more

Due to all the bad reviews, I was prepared to not like this place when my friends said they wanted to come here for New Years. However, I had a fantastic experience. I've never experienced such polite staff (bouncers included) at a busy bar before in my life! At one point they decided to close down the patio (not sure why) and I desperately needed to make a phone call. The bouncer actually APOLOGIZED to me and said that I wasn't allowed to use the patio, but I was not expecting an apology. The bartenders were great too! Boars Crossing is okay. It's not the greatest place ever...and definitely not my first choice of places to go. But Friday nights they have a live band, which, I think is pretty damn cool. It gets old listening R&B all the time. If you get there early enough or a little later than the expected time, there isn't a huge line. Besides you probably wouldn't want to spend more than 2 hours there anyways. I don't share the same sentiments. I can understand some of the comments about the security, and the main bartender is a bit snobby. However, the drinks aren't overpriced to me, and they make the best tequila sunrise I have found in Carlsbad. If you want quick service just hit up the side bar by the front door. If you smoke, the back patio is where you have to go, but they close it at midnight. After that, you're going to have to wait in line. Speaking of the line, there's always a long line there, and people grease the bouncers $20 to jump ahead in line all the time, so the wait can suck. The cover is usually $5 to $10, and they have a band play on Friday night that plays 80s chick songs. It gets crowded, but it's not that bad of an experience. read more

I like the atmosphere. For the most part staff is friendly except for one bouncer who feels entitled with his security shirt on. Drinks are good at the usual high price but music is good and cover is cheap. Multiple bars so getting a drink isn't a fight to the death with the person next to you. This place is the worst! The bartenders are terrible- they don't know how to mix a drink. The lady who works Saturday nights will make you wait 15 minutes to order a drink and then expect a big tip. The bouncers suck too. This place blows hard. I would not recommend it. read more

The employees here have changed for the worst. Total transformation, they yell at customers. There's no reason staff should be disrespecting customers and yelling at them because they don't have their stuff together. New staff has made it a really messy, unorganized, and a hostile environment. This dive bar makes Carlsbad look trashy. There's no respect, customer service has gone out the window. Eh... what can I say? It's a bar. The night we went there was live music which is always fun. The drinks were good. I'm not sure how much they cost because my girlfriend bought the drinks. There was a fair amount of seating which was nice. The bathrooms were clean and the line moved quickly. read more

Good fun for Friday and Sat night if you want to keep things local. Different DJ"s and bands play every weekend so the dynamic of the crowd and dance floor is different. Some night are better than others depending if the Dj know what to play on the dance floor. Just remember that it's still very close to Camp Pendleton and it's will be filled with military. This place is a mixed bag. During the regular work week its calm and lots of locals. They generally have a $1 plastic cup beer patio happy hour out back. But the week end it goes off. Dress code, girls in nicer dresses, Marines, lots of Marines, full on club atmosphere. The dace floor is great but can really get scary and dangerous with so many big and amped up dudes. Lots of fights seem to happen here. The bar tenders are top notch though! It may take a long time to get a drink with so many people packing the place on the weekend. I rarely go to Boar Cross'n any more because I'm not looking to get drunk or in a fight. But if you are looking for some good dancing and fun I would recommend it. read more

This bar is pretty cool. It's in the middle of Carlsbad so there is a lot to do around there. The drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is cool. It's not a fancy bar but the still charge a 5.00 cover charge to get in at night. The bar tenders are pretty cool but there is one older lady who is pretty rude. I can't remember her name. The bartenders always seem overwhelmed when they are working. It's not friendly like other bars I have been too. read more

I wish I could give 0 stars. I went here last night and had the worst experience I have ever had at a bar. Upon arriving, everything was fine. We ordered our drinks from an unfriendly bartender but they were quick and fine. A few minutes later we had to go to the restroom. We walked over and the bouncer told us we had to leave our open drinks on the ledge next to him. Noticing that there were already about 10 drinks on the bar and that it wasn't being monitored in any way, I said no. As a girl, we're taught not to leave our drinks unattended. He said that my option was to "leave my drink or hold my pee". So my boyfriend held my drink and waited until I got back to go to the restroom. The bouncer that was watching the bathrooms was such an asshole. He was so insanely rude that I was shocked. A little while later, we were minding our own business and they were very suddenly starting to close. They looked at us and said "you need to get out now". We asked if we could just have a second to finish the drinks we were served right before. They told us that we needed to chug it on our walk to the door. We were very upset at this point about the way we were being treated by the STAFF! Once we were out on the sidewalk (public city sidewalk, might I add) and waiting for our uber (which was around the corner), we had bouncers coming over and getting in our face telling us that we needed to leave. They weren't only saying this to us, but everyone standing on the PUBLIC sidewalk where they have no jurisdiction over who is standing on the sidewalk. They were in our face telling us that we needed to leave immediately. They told us that we could wait for our uber somewhere else and that nobody could be standing here on the sidewalk. We walked to the next block (on the other side of their parking lot) where another bouncer approached us again. He claimed he was coming over to apologize to us but was getting in our faces again and being aggressive. Finally he walked away and said "f*ck you" to us. We are very kind and polite people who were mistreated all night by the staff at this establishment for no reason. I have never been treated so poorly anywhere in my entire life. They need a huge change at this bar as I'm seeing that rude and disrespectful staff is a common review here. Absolutely horrible. While it's cheaper than some other bars, your money is worth going elsewhere. read more

Basically a typical bar. pool tables, nice size bar in the middle, small dance floor in the back corner with dancers on platforms. Overall i guess its a pretty decent place. My friends go here alot but I'm not really a fan. There are other bars and resturants all around this place in walking distance. I went here once for my friend's group performance on a hip hop night and it was pretty legit. Now that I look at it, maybe I should go back and try it again. This was my second visit to boars cross'n and boy did I have a great time. Best time to go is when there is a football game to watch, on this visit, we had the last nascar race to watch. Atmosphere is fun, and the people are pretty mellow, unless the chargers are losing lol. The drinks were awesome and so was the price. Next visit to Carlsbad, my boyfriend and I will have to stop by. read more
