After not visiting Board and Batten for about a year have been 3 times in the past couple of weeks. Forgot how great their happy hour is. The tacos and meat balls are wonderful as well as a nice beer and wine selection. We ordered the charcuterie platter and it was beautifully presented. Things went downhill from there. I had the fish (only fish on menu) and it was dry and tasteless. My husband had the duck and said it was okay but that he has made it better at home. My daughter had the fried chicken which was decent but she said the portion was small. I later saw a wait staff eating the fried chicken; I realized then it is the best dish on the dinner menu. The tab was $120. My husband said the wine was excellent. The service was top notch but the food left much room for improvement. I will be back though for the beautiful surroundings and service. I read reviews and figure maybe lunch is better? I hope dinner improves since Mesa is desperate for a go to excellent restaurant! I think they could do well with a tapas menu. OH we had the Italian Cake for dessert. It was okay. It was thick with frosting and I wouldn't order it again. It was a step above grocery store cake - just very heavy and way to sweet. Here for dinner 12/23. An amazing bistro. Just a little noisy and it wasn't even full! Small dinner menu but our 3 entrees were terrific, especially the fried chicken. I added mashed potatoes to it so it was perfect. The meat/cheese starter was wonderful and the brie with the bacon topping was something I'd have everytime. What a delightful little hidden bistro. Its nice to see fresh menu items that change everyday. The only draw back may be its all outside seating. Nice to have a heater today since it was cloudy. The servers have been very knowledgable and they appear to care about the customers. Our coffee was refilled w/o asking and there was always someone around if we needed anything. The pesto pasta today was over-the-top delicious and the sweet potato tots melt in your mouth. Their take on the grilled cheese will leave you speechless! We tried the pastry tray with 3 desserts on it, a caramel bar, a brown explosion and a pumpkin chocolate chip roll. Only the last one we didn't like....all 3 together was way way to sweet! None of us could finish it. It needed a fruit or citrus to balance out the sweet. Can't wait to go back. While there make a trip to the restroom ( they are inside the mansion). Beautiful! This little gem is packed away nicely in an old orange grove. This probably has one of the nicest patios on the east side, and both their menu and food is very well made. My only knock was the lack of beer options...kilt lifter was the only non-light beer. read more

Where do I begin.... its my birthday and we picked this establishment to celebrate the occasion. To say this meal was a disappointment would be an understatement. We always order at least a bottle of wine and appetizers to begin but being very very hungry caused us to jump straight into the meals. My boyfriend and I both ordered the Delmonico rib-eyes medium rare. However both steaks came out medium well to well done. After asking to have my steak returned I caught an attitude but she finally accommodated. The second round the streak came out half well done and half rare. Either this is rookies hour or the chef has no clue how his grill works with hot and cool zones. Long story short I have had better steaks at outback... and thats truly saying something. My boyfriend ate most of his meal before mine was returned. What a way to celebrate right? Eating subpar steak and paying 150+ for low quality. Next time we will make the drive to mastros where excellent is a bench mark. You have lost our business. read more

This was my first time dining here, even though I did research prior reviews and familiarize myself with the menu. The ambience is great, very nice place with seating inside and out. Outside dining area is very nice! Would be great during our cooler months. I had the Charcuterie and Cheese Board, along with the Brie and Jam. The Charcuterie Board was outstanding. They paired the meats and cheeses very well! Sometimes restaurants do not do this well, but Board and Batten paired everything perfectly in my opinion. Large board with plenty for two to eat. The Brie and Jam was phenomenal! The bacon jam in this dish is amazing with the Brie and Focaccia Bread. For dessert I tried the Pineapple Bread pudding. All I can say is WOW! Very good! I did try a drink from the bar. Had them make an Old Fashioned using Rye. Done to perfection in my book! I will be back for more! I highly recommend this place for date night! I wrote a review a couple weeks ago about this quaint little Bistro. I said my wife and I wanted to go back for there lunch. Well you we have been back there for lunch twice. I had the French Dip and it was fantastic. It was so good I had it again today when we went back. The Au jus was great. They serve it with home made chips and a fabulous homemade BBQ sauce to dip them in. Really good. The first time my wife had the Southwestern salad. She said it was one of the best salads she has had. Today she had a Southwestern Chicken salad on croissant with French Onion Soup. She loved it. 1st time here. Terrible. To get straight to the issue, table of 3 and we ordered the Branzino and 2 Pork Chops. The dishes eventually came and it was 1 pork chop and a salmon prepared in a paper sack. The Expo delivered the 2 dishes, saying that one of them was salmon. We were confused by this as we ordered Branzino. We opened the paper and it was salmon, as the expo was already gone. As we didn't have time to short this out as we had to go to a show, my wife just had the salmon that was brought over. The server eventually came over, beyond the two bite checkup and noticed that my pork chop still hadn't arrived. He went to the kitchen. After a few minutes he came back to say he made a mistake and that he just ordered the one pork chop. While the other 2 people were deep into finishing their dishes the 2nd cocktail arrived that was ordered during appetizers. The other patron was going to have it with their dinner, but it came when everything was almost done, We were running late as it is and told him we were going to a show and and didn't have time. Server offered to see if I wanted to take the pork chop that wasn't ringed up to-go, which I declined as we needed to rushed through dinner to get to the show now. Having sat at 6, and it was now 715. We got the check and Branzino was on the receipt, as originally ordered. I asked the server why we got salmon instead and he had no clue. It wasn't an accidental switch of fish/dish, because there is no Salmon Entree even on the menu. They just swapped the fish out because they probably ran out of Branzino and stocked up on salmon instead. If this was the case the server had no knowledge of the audible the kitchen was calling. If we knew that Branzino was 86'ed, and swapped for salmon, we wouldn't have ordered the salmon to begin with. The server offered desert, again we had to leave and had no time for this but desert isn't going to make up for two big errors. No manager came to visit the table, and if there was a manager you wouldn't be able to tell as they weren't making the normal rounds around the dining room. The server didn't even ask a manager to get involved which would have been the normal thing to do in any case. Obviously no communication between FOH and BOH as Branzino wasn't an option and were given a prepared dish that wasn't even on the menu. It wasn't like they prepared the Salmon differently from one of their other entrees, salmon isn't on the menu. No offer or gesture of taking a cocktail off or anything. Just paid for a dish we didn't order and had no choice to eat with no time to fix anything, You only get one first impression and they fell flat in multiple ways. A late cocktail isn't a big deal, but it was just one of several breakdowns. You've been warned. read more

Came here for the first time this morning and so glad I did. This place is BOMB. I got the French dip with Mac n cheese and he went for the grown up grilled cheese with tomato soup. We split right down the middle and complimented our lunch with some blackberry mimosas. We need more places like this in Mesa! I loved eating out on the patio. So pretty! read more

I took my mother for lunch. Charming little place with delicious food (we had a spinach salad with chicken) and amazing Italian wedding cake!! Just be aware the restaurant is VERY noisy. It is used for weddings, so the floors and walls are bare. The slightest noise (conversations and laughter) from across the restaurant can be heard. We will be back on a nice fall day. read more

My 22nd anniversary was the other day and it took some convincing to get my wife to leave the house and join me for dinner (long story - pandemic & kid fighting cancer with weakened immune system at home). It was the first time we dined out in well over a year. We live very close to Board & Batten and I know they have a nice patio so I made a reservation online. I added comments to the reservation indicating that it was our anniversary and that if it was possible we would prefer to sit away from other tables. We arrived and were escorted to a side of the patio where nobody else was seated. It appeared as if they moved one of the patio dining tables over to this side specifically for us as all the other tables on this side were more casual. The servers were very conscientious of us and only approached to take our order, serve food and drinks, etc. The food was fantastic, the service great but we really appreciated the fact that they made this seating accommodation for us. It made our anniversary dinner very special and we both felt very comfortable being there. It was even a little romantic being off to the side, like that Lady and the Tramp scene although we didn't get the pasta.
