I recently read a review from a lady named "Tracy". I found it to be quite entertaining considering the fact that she complained about the service of a bartender named Travis and even went as far as claiming " he is a racist." In reality her card was declined when she tried to pay and denied drinks on her bill that she clearly purchased. What a joke! Hopefully she never comes back. I watched all of this happen before my eyes. Who wants customers that don't want to pay or better yet- can't. This is a great bar! It's been around for decades for a reason. This place is close to my home and I want to like it. But they have major issues with consistency, honoring specials posted on their website (they don't keep it maintained regularly and don't seem to think that is a problem), and poor service. I come in on occasion because it is so close, have a reasonably decent experience, think "ok, maybe now they've gotten it together," come in again and get let down. This latest visit is my absolute last one. I came in for a Bloody Mary and we sat on the patio. I took a bit of time to drink it, in part because my husband and I were planning out a trip. The bartender checked in on us once before I had finished my drink and then quit checking in. I walked inside once and the bartender was busy at a table so I sat back down outside. I waited and waited, all the time staring inside the windows so that they knew we were waiting. After 20 min. and finally making eye contact from inside, the bartender came back out and asked if I wanted another drink, but then added "oh, we are out of Bloody Mary mix." While I was thinking about whether I wanted to switch to something else, I noted that I'd been waiting for 20 min. They said, and I kid you not, "I got slammed, so we are now only taking orders from the bar." Well, that made up my mind fast. I told them that would have been nice to know and, no, I was done. I came in to pay with cash and stood in front of where they were pouring drinks, They made me wait a few more minutes before they could bother to get around to ringing me up. Took my 12 year old son to Dobbs today, because it's a Tucson landmark. We waited for 10 minutes to be greeted, another 15 to order and another 10 to get 2 sodas. After waiting 50 minutes for our food, we decided to leave. Paid in full for food we never received and left a tip ($60) total. The food was undercooked, the cockroach in my burger was still alive!!! The hostess was rude and never refilled my drink. The waiter was getting railed in the back by a dog which I'm pretty sure Is illegal. After waiting for the food for several seconds it came out under cooked. After eating the burger, cockroach and all I proceeded to have explosive diarrhea for several hours straight. At one point the velocity of the diarrhea was so high that my toilet bowl broke and I had to buy a new one, and replace the flooring of my bathroom. read more

For some students, Dirtbags was "a part of growing up." For me, it was always Bob Dobbs. More often than not, a stop here would work it's way into whatever festivities we had planned: taking in a basketball game, grabbing a bite after a concert, or just meeting up for a good time. Finals week was usually officially wrapped up with a visit here. This was the place to go when we needed to decompress. Many a bachelorette party seemed to find it's way here as well. A couple decades later, and not much has changed. About once a month, our lab would meet here for lab meetings or once again, to decompress after a big grant had been sent out. Back in the day, when my now husband was still courting me, he wrote our names on the wall with a purple sharpie, complete with a heart and arrow. And we'd still find ourselves wandering over at times to watch a game and have a beer. Bob Dobbs is nothing fancy. The seating is comprised mostly of picnic tables with decades of graffiti carved into them, and the walls are still adorned with names, poems, mottos, you name it, in sharpie or whatever writing instrument they have on hand. Ive seen people bring kids here on occasion, but I personally don't view this place a family appropriate - some of the limericks scribbled on the walls are a bit raunchy. The raunch is taken to a whole new level in the restrooms, so again, know before you go (so to speak). As for the food - in all my years coming here, I've only has three things: the Bob burger, the french fries, and the fried clams. I love how they season the burgers, with lots of garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. It's served on a big challah bun with choice of cheese (I get the smoked mozzarella), crisp lettuce, tomato, and a pickle. The fries are hand cut and maybe a nice accompaniment to the burger. And this may be nostalgia talking, but I do love the clams, and the cocktail sauce seems always to have perfect amount of horseradish. Now that I have kids, I don't get many opportunities to dine in, so when a craving hits I'll take my food to go (as a result, my kids have all become fans of Bob Dobbs takeout). I find the service generally competent, but no nonsense. If bubbly enthusiasm in restaurant staff is your thing, you'll be sorely disappointed with your experience here. Bartenders and serves are affable and attentive, but they only get chummy with the regulars - and there are definitely a lot of regulars here. That said, newbies are certainly welcome, and tipping will go a long ways towards earning their endearment. I received the absolute worst treatment from the bartenders at Dobbs. I came in earlier this evening due to the yelp reviews and sat at the bar to order a Jameson and Guinness. After the bartender looked at my ID, he condescendingly said "this doesn't look like you." Now, I understand bartednders having to cover their ass nowadays to avoid getting trapped in sting operations, I get that. But this guy was exceedingly rude about it. I have also never been questioned about my ID in the past so this was a little surprising. He took it over to his coworker who I believe had a blacklight so they could check the watermarks, but this went on for about 3 minutes after I had ordered. So after he came back to me he asked, "do you have anything more current?" This is a valid ID mind you that doesn't expire for over a year. I look through my wallet and produced my Costco membership card which does have a slightly more current photo. He then compares the two side by side for quite a while, dropping my credit card in the process behind the bar. After a while he hands the cards back to me and says, "you should get something more current." To which I responded, "that's all I have." He then let out a sigh and asked what I wanted again. It was at this point I gave up on the whole ordeal and just said, "forget it." I travel extensively for my job and have been to just about every corner of this country, but the way these guys are running that bar is absolutely awful. This perennial favorite that I often forget about except when i am thinking excellent burger and fries. Through the years of living here I have eaten, a least 50 burgers here, always order the same thing a Bob Dobb and fries. My friend Larry lived a couple of doors down and we would come by about every other Sunday for years, Larry died of cancer a couple of years ago and it has been hard to go back, but I am glad I have. I'm not a bar person in general. Bob Dobbs doesn't have the right atmosphere for me and looks a bit dilapidated for my taste. My party of four opted for the balcony seats and a guy was smoking on the table right next to ours. Definitely not my scene. The menu was not my thing, either. I was picking through the items and found the descriptions not particularly appetizing -- "Hooter Sandwich," "ripe tomato," "ripe avocado"? Eh, Bob Dobbs is ok. We went here based on Yelp reviews and other recommendations, and I feel like we were led a bit astray. We were mostly looking for dinner, not really drinks, but we commonly go to restaurant/bars for this and it's generally just fine. At Bob Dobbs, though, it really seems that they don't particularly care to serve you food. Just sit at the bar and drink. Or leave. Well, anyway, we decided to stay and eat. The waitress didn't say hello, or tell us her name, she just asked what we wanted to drink. Someone else brought the drinks to us. Again, we didn't learn his name. The waitress came back and took our food order. This was some of the coldest service we've had in a while. Not outright rude, just totally disinterested, cold, and miserable. My husband had a cheeseburger, well, two cheeseburgers (more on that later), and I had a french dip sandwich. Both with fries. I also ordered a White Russian. The kitchen took quite a while to get the food out, which seems surprising given the fact that I'm pretty sure all of the food is some sort of frozen. My french dip was decent. The meat was pretty tender and flavorful. The au jus was among the most seasoned that I've had. The bread was ok, but could have been a little softer. Overall, though, I would eat this again, though I certainly am not craving it. My husband's Bob Dobbs burger was another story. What was on the plate was a bun with two mini cheeseburger patties on it. They had to partially stack on top of one another to spread across the bun. If they went right on top of one another, then at least half of the surface area of the bun would have been wasted (unless you enjoy just eating bread sandwiches). But if they sat flat next to each other, they would peek pretty far over the sides of the bun. What in the world were they thinking with this? It was sloppy and just stupid. He also ordered it medium, and it came out so well done, that it was absolutely dry and miserable to eat. He reluctantly added a lot of mustard to it to be able to eat it. Oh, and that mustard bottle, as well as the ketchup bottle, are the refillable type. When the restaurant refills them, they might want to wipe them down once in a while. They were sorta nasty. And that bun? It was pretty stale. Overall, do not order this burger, it is ridiculously not good. The fries were decent, much better than a lot of other places in town. Not a homerun, but definitely edible. But again with that ketchup bottle. Gross. Ugh. My White Russian was just a standard White Russian. Nothing special to see here. A little pricey, though. The restaurant itself was pretty boring, even if they do let people foul up their walls with stupid sayings. The bar is the focal point in the center. It's very dark in there, but that didn't bother me. Some of the surfaces in the restaurant were a little grungy, which did bother me. Clean up a little bit. You serve food. Meh. There were also two really loud younger women at the bar. It was barely 5pm and they were plastered and hanging off of all the old men in the place. It was a little strange to see 20-something women being rowdy and drunk with 60 year old men. Who all had wedding rings on. Just a weird atmosphere. Anyway, if someone we knew wanted to go here, I certainly would go. But I don't think we'll choose it ourselves again. There are plenty of other places that serve better food, are cleaner, and have much friendlier and pleasant staff. read more

So I have been in Tucson for almost a year and I pass this place all the time and I have wanted to stop in. Finally went here for dinner tonight. This place is a hole in the wall, and sort of gross inside, exactly what I expected and wanted it to be. The restaurant was very clean, but the magic marker on the walls gives the appearance of a dive bar. I compare it to an upscale Buffet (on 9th St) with better food. We sat outside and it was really nice. They have two patios that connect to the small inside bar and it was pretty busy on the Friday night that we came. The crowd was rambunctious in my opinion but I kind of liked that everyone was getting along and the music wasn't overbearing. It would be a nice place to hit up for happy hour in the future. The only problem was I think we were the youngest people in the place (at 26 and 24) by a good 20 years. I don't mind that I just got a kick out of it. The people at the table behind us on the patio at one point started yelling at one of their friends in a passing car on 6th street. Everyone was having a good time. Me and my friend both ordered the dinner special (which on this occasion was Baja Fish Tacos). It was mediocre at best but it was good food and they gave you a pretty generous portion. The other dinner special was fried clams which I might also want to try. Overall, I was happy with my experience here, I would come back again when I am in the mood for a good pub burger or something on that level. I was intimidated by the soy sauce so I stayed away from the Bob burger and instead got the Connie burger. It was good. Really, really good. I asked for onions and side of bbq sauce and it was brought out with the burger (at no addl charge). This was better than the wildcat burger at Trident. The bar itself is small. It's a ring in the middle of the restaurant, which would make for a friendly experience with all the other drunken bar-goers. The waitress was friendly, as was the cook who brought out our food. Towards the end of the meal the waitress got sluggish and left me without anything to drink for a few minutes. But I was so involved with downing my burger that it didn't bother me. I live in the neighborhood and I wanted to take my dad out to lunch so we figured we'd walk on down to Bob Dobbs to sit on the patio with my dog (she's an Aussie and well behaved) and watch a football game. We called ahead and asked if dogs were allowed, they said they are. We get there and my dad goes in to ask how to get on the patio so we don't have to take my dog into the establishment (we didn't want to be rude). Manager/Bartender/Ravens fan? was a complete and total dick to my father. He refused to serve us and threatened to harm my dog for no apparent reason. I have been there before on another occasion and wanted to give this place another try, as the first time I went the service was crappy but I thought it may have been a fluke. Honestly, the food and drinks are mediocre and way overpriced, the only plus was that it was within walking distance to my house. It seems that this is a great place for regulars or for people who are friends with the staff/owners but lord help you if you are not. They've also been caught operating without a license serval times since then. I will NEVER go here again nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone. I'd give it a -1 if I could. read more

I was meeting a friend for lunch at Rincon Market and realized that Bob's was there and we decided why not lets do lunch here instead. We sat outside on their patio since it was a very lovely day. The only down side was that too many cars pass by during the lunch our and you can't really have a great conversation. The waitress was very quick and fast in getting our drinks and food. I had ordered a pastrami sandwich which was really good. The only down side was their mustard and ketchup bottles were in the classic color plastic containers, and they clearly didn't look like they had been wipe off in a few months so I kind of felt that i was a little unsanitary. read more

I've been a fan of Bob Dobb's since my days as a college student (many moons ago)... I now live out of state and make it a point to stop by my all time favorite Wildcat bar when I am back for a visit. Even though Tucson is quickly changing, Bob Dobb's has remained the casual neighborhood spot it always has been. A modern day "Cheers", if you will. Make no mistake, this place is a total dive. What keeps me coming back is that it's just a short walk from our place and the fact that I can throw my peanut shells on the ground, not like I would or anything ... ;) I either get the Kiltlifter or the Blue Moon on tap. I've had their food once before, although I really can't remember it, if that's any indication of how good it was. Maybe I should try their burgers, though ... I hear they have a reputation. 2/23/13 We were wandering around the neighborhood, looking for lunch, before shopping and ended up in Bob Dobb's and we're glad we did! U of A bball game was on several TVs and other games were on too. And one of the bartenders is a Minnesota Vikings fan so I'll be back to watch football in the fall! I had the world famous Bob burger, double cheese burger. Well seasoned, well cooked. Just the right amount of greasy to taste great! Hubby had the green chili and gouda burger and he loved it. We shared an order of onion rings which also disappeared. This place was quite a find for us! When we want a good burger in a great atmosphere, we'll be back here!! Yum! read more

Stopped by for lunch last week, and I was really impressed by the burgers and service. It's a cool dive-y bar, with good food and a nice patio. The manager mentioned they have karaoke on Saturdays so we went back at night and it was PACKED. The bartenders were all great. Average food, average atmosphere. I went on lunch break and wanted to try something new and opted for this place. I don't remember much of what I got, but I do remember it was good. Not great, not bad, just pretty average. Not cheap though, so I'm not going to be returning any time soon. If you want a burger I would suggest going to Graze which is just north of this place, or if you want a hot dog to just grab a Sonoran dog at any nearby Mexican drive-thru. read more

It was a valiant effort, but the burger was cooked well done when I had asked for medium. Same story for my friend who had a burger. Fries were a bit overcooked too, but hey, it's actually easier to get distracted on slow Wednesday nights! I wasn't too upset. The vibe is good. If you've read some of these outdated reviews, you'll find that the atmosphere is less divey... and cleaned up! Best Bloody Mary in Tucson...hands down. Great burgers as well, but they tend to be a little overcooked, so if you like Medium, ask for Medium Rare. Sadly, I discovered this place late in my college career, as it's a great change of scenery from the normal UA spots and the crowd is laid back. This is such a great little neighborhood type bar. I like that it's pretty chill. Don't come here expecting to rage. There is a nice patio with TVs if that's your sort of thing. The bartenders are nice and recognize their repeat offenders (they stopped asking me for ID after a while) which means they pay attention to who steps in. The drinks and prices are good. There is always a couple of good beers on tap (Pacifico FTW). The food is aight- their sandwiches and homemade chips are pretty good. The clientele can be interesting, as with many places in Tucson. When I'm not in the mood for 4th or downtown but still down for a good drink, this is my place. read more

The food's not bad at all, I definitely recommend the Bob Burger. The service is another story. While our server wasn't necessarily rude, she wasn't very welcoming either. We never got her name, and when we asked for a high chair, she pointed to the corner of the room and said "yeah, over there. Just grab one" and walked off. If you're looking for big comfortable couches, trendy decor, drinks that fizzle and pop, and DJs spinning the latest Chris Brown track, die in a fire. This is a neighborhood bar. The service is going to be neighborly the first time you go. If you show up a few times, eventually you'll know the names of many of the regulars, all of the bartenders and servers, and they'll know yours too. They will treat you better than any bar on Congress or 4th, you'll be privy to the best Reuben Sandwich in the Old Pueblo and if you're lucky...they'll even switch one of the many TVs over to some obscure channel that is showing your team win and/or embarrass you again. The sandwiches are great, the burgers are great, and the beer is always cold. The service is friendly and prompt. I'm not reviewing a doctor here...so if you're looking for more than that, I will kindly remind you that this is a corner bar...give them a shot. They'll earn your loyalty. Go after a long day of hiking, after work has you at wits end or when your team is playing. If you want to have a conversation about sports with someone that isn't going to just regurgitate what the guys on SportsCenter said the night before, this is your bar. First of all, they use some secret Worcestershire sauce thing that just makes these burgers mind blowing. I wish I could share more about the atmosphere, or the waitstaff, but I was too content carving my name in our table and enjoying my burger to concentrate on my surroundings. Stopped by Bob Dobbs after landing in Tucson for a drink before dinner. I might be a bit biased coming from LA, but the prices were phenomenal- a beer and a G&T were only $6.50! (I was expecting triple that!) They didn't have a huge selection, but there were bout 5 beers on tap to choose from (I had the Four Peaks Kilt Lifter, which was great. The other options were basically Sierra Nevada, Blue Moon, Bud Light, and Coors, so not quite as exciting). A nice addition is the free baskets of [very salty] peanuts to snack on while you enjoy your drink! This seems like it would be great place for someone going alone or with a group to grab a drink or come and watch a game, and if I were hanging out in the area, I'd come back! read more

You know that feeling you get when you go to a bar that tends to have a lot of regulars, and as soon as an unknown walks in they look at you like you are an intruder, in THEIR bar. It's a place where you will find names like Big Dumb Gary, Mustache Mike, Bookman Bill, Crazy Linda, and so much more. For real...no joke! Overall, it's a place where everybody knows your name! The food is fantastic and includes daily specials in addition to regular items such as garlic fries, famous wings, homemade soups, tasty sandwiches, fresh salads and the most popular burger of all.....The Bob. It's DELICIOUS! This spicy 8 oz cheeseburger is fully loaded with garlic....you will sing of garlic for hours to last! There's a diverse assortment of beer on tap and long tenured bartenders capable of creating any mixed fantasy. Your first visit to Bob Dobbs will undoubtedly not be your last! After the Hawkeyes got beat by a better U of A team this weekend I really wasn't feeling like getting heckled by anymore Wildcats fans, but my friend convinced me to stop by and have a beer with him. Reluctantly I agreed and I'm glad I did. This place was far enough off the beaten path that no one was rude or mean, just eager to smile and give me a slap on the back, saying "good game!" The beer was cheap and the service fast and friendly. Didn't partake in any food but some of the people we were with did and it all looked good. Um....wow. This place has the best burger I have had in a very long time, Maybe ever. The beer selection isn't anything fancy but what they do have hits the spot. I am always a fan of Guinness on tap. The menu promises the Bob to have garlic, Worcestershire and soy sauce. Every flavor can be tasted in every bite without overwhelming the taste of the juicy beef. Add some mayo, onions, tomato and lettuce and you're in juice running down your arm heaven. This burger is not for the faint of heart! Keep your pantie hose at home because you will get messy. The staff were very friendly and attentive, however, the patrons were a little sketch. It shouldn't bother you if you don't mind hearing right wing bullshit. It was 5 o' clock on a Friday, so I expect the hardcore alcoholics are gone by the time more open minded youngsters start to come in. read more
