I thought what I had @ Bobby G's Pizzeria was pretty good. The menu they have is huge so had a hard time deciding what to go. They have starters & sides $5.75-8. Salads $6.95. NY Style Pizza: individual slice $2.5/ small (12") $13/ Large (18") $20. Extra toppings: .50/ $1.3/ $1.8. Bobby G's signature pizzas either Small or Large..why no medium? Sicilian pizzas/ Bobby G's pan fried pizzas/ pasta/ panini & sandwiches/ dessert/ drinks. For 3 people we got: Large pizza with half Sausage & Mushroom $23.75 and BLT $22.75 - dang, should have got meat lovers pie or clam & garlic pie instead of half BLT. BLT was the weakest because lettuce just doesn't go well with pizza. I liked the Sausage & Mushroom half better. I wish I looked at the paper menu because it had clam & garlic on there, not on the board one. I would have liked that instead of the BLT. My guy found Bobby G's Pizzeria on the schedule for SF Beer Week and wanted to try it out. It has two of the things he loves the most, pizza and beer. We brought along my sister. She loves a good craft beer and Stone Brewing Co took over a few taps. We all ordered the same beer which was a special IPA Saison blend. Fantastic. We all had a slice of cheese pizza, which was pretty cheap like $3 a slice. They have so many kinds and toppings, but we were not even that hungry and just craved a regular cheese slice. The place was pretty crowded, so we shared a table with another patron, who was pretty nice to let us join him. I went there last year to watch the basketball playoffs. The pizza was horrible and the service was practically nonexistent. I ordered a small half triple mushroom and half paradise pie. The mushroom portion was pretty good. Slightly thin crust, delicious cheese and thick slices of mushroom. The paradise pie was basically a hawaiian pizza with chunks of ham and pineapple. I could not taste the mango puree though. :( The best was the pan fried pizza with sausage, peppers and caramelized onions. The crust wasn't as oily as I expected and very crispy. There are big screens playing all the games and groups of guys enjoying pints and munching on some pies while routing for their teams. The place is busy and loud, so come here with that in mind. My friends and I had been coming here monthly for going on a year. It was to a certain extent a meme based off the fun restaurant name, but any excuse for a special night out inevitably led us back to the lively indoor/outdoor seating and solid pizza. If you plan on coming here you will likely have a fun time--the seating indoors is cozy but cheery, the outdoor seating has a brilliant atmosphere (often helped by live music), and the pizza ranges from unproblematic to somewhat interesting. That said we won't be coming back ever again. The aura encapsulated in our chears for Bobby g's was never about the restaurant being truly special. Last time we went out we made the mistake of ordering the dessert pizza. It was supposed to be topped with bananas although they apparently decided to stop using bananas altogether and were nice enough to put canned pineapple and apples on top instead. This was made even more gross by the fact that the "pizza" it came on top of was an ugly and small burnt black paper thin crust. It was inedible even to a table of hungry college students so we promptly tried to send the dish back and get a refund. Despite spending quite literally into the 4-digits over the course of the year, the restaurant head angrily refused and told us "that's life" and proudly said the blackened disc always looked like that anyways. After arguing bitterly for 5 minutes the restaurant head found a way to cruelly and mistakenly throw the waiter under the bus over the banana mix-up so he could give us our like 10 dollars back. So instead of just giving the regular customers 10 dollars back over an almost untouched burnt disaster, he decided to lose the hundreds+ of dollars we would have spent in the future. If you make a restaurant based heavily around the ambiance and friendly vibes you can't operate like that. I'm not saying this to dissuade people from checking the place out but I sincerely want Bobby G's to reflect on what happened. read more

I got two slices of pizza - one with jalapeño and pineapple, the other with pesto and olives. The pineapples looked like they came from a can and the jalapeños were super light and not spicy at all, so I was really displeased with that slice from the beginning to end. The pesto and olives slice was significantly better and made up for the rest of the meal. The pesto was some of the best I've ever head and mixed well with the cheese, and the olives were a nice touch. Overall, really really solid Pizza, probably one of the best in Berkeley. Bobby G's always reminds me of World Cup soccer and Wimbeldon, and the US Open (tennis) as well, so maybe Bobby G's just reminds me of international summer sporting events. There are plenty of TVs to watch whatever you want, including some really random activities that I don't even consider sports, although they're aired on ESPN and related stations. The pizza is good, and they even have decent salad, which you wouldn't expect from a sports bar, but I'll vouch for it, and by now, I think you know you can trust me when it comes to salad. Even though it is a sports bar, it's not dark inside, and it feels perfectly appropriate for a casual lunch-break meal, without the drinky-drinkies of course. It's pretty empty at lunch hour, so don't expect anything nearing table service during that time; but it is a pleasant place to eat a slice, watch part of a game (or a couple of games in a tennis set), and just look at University Avenue out the nice big windows. Came here last night when they were having their weekly Wednesday trivia night. We ordered the Mushrooms and Olives 18in ($27.25) and a beer each. Each slice was humongous and just absolutely delicious (and very filling). On the oily scale, it was probably a 8/10, you know the type you consider blotting before you eat. It was also pretty darn cheesy- enough to get that long string of melted cheese after biting into your slice. The beer selection is normal and I guess changes every Wednesday based on the vendor thats participating in the games. The trivia night itself was entertaining. The Berkeley community- vibes are strong and I suggest bringing your A team when participating because the questions are harder than Kips and/or Superb trivia nights. Service was fantastic and the waiters also come around and suggest hints or answers which is fun! For California pizza (as it tends to leave a lot on the table for my tastes), this was as good as any east coast pizza I've had. We opted for the half mushroom, half pepperoni pie. But that's beside the point... Bobby G's pizza is... SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPEALIDOCIOUS!!!! We always order two pizza pies because we know our glutton, know our primordial ravenousness for food that tastes THIS amazing. Their pizza crust is not heavy, nor light; not too thick nor too thin, crunchy yet chewy enough; don't ask me how they balance these opposites so expertly. They make their own soy cheese there that they apply in a mustard-on-hotdog-like squiggly fashion, instead of just layering a epidermal cholesterol centimeter of cheese as with most pizzas, allowing you to taste the garlic-tinged cheese yet sparingly enough to not clog your arteries or feel slow after the chow-down. They serve their pizzas on a raised platform and you just use their pie server utensil and transport piece after piece onto your own plate. One time my daughter fumbled the whole process and our pizza fell on the floor. The owner, who I assume is Bobby himself, kindly offered to replace the pizza for free. Very nice of them. We have never had problems finding a seat unlike other restaurant zoos that have good food but prove difficult to plan for because you have to vulture a seat or wait forever. I'm more of a fan of Bobby G's pasta than I am of their pizza. Granted, I've never had an entire pie. For me, I usually go in and just order a slice with a few added toppings. Bobby G's regular thin crust doesn't excite me. The first time I had pizza here I took one look at the crust which is very uniform around the edges and I immediately linked it with the cookie cutter crust from fast food giant Domino's. The taste of the crust isn't very spectacular either. If anything it often tastes burned. The sauce is thin and sweet. The problem with that is the slice doesn't taste fresh; it just tastes like re-heated pizza. The toppings don't stick either. A single slice with a drink would suffice for a meal. I've had pasta here several times, and I really like their pasta especially the Sweet Italian Sausage pasta. The rigatoni is cooked al dente and the selection features lots of sausage and mushrooms. The mushrooms are sliced, and the sausage are in big clumps combined in a creamy white sauce and dusted with freshly grated parmesan and parsley so that it appears to have snow on top of a bowl. Delicious! They offer a ten percent student discount, and I'm pretty certain students aren't as picky about their pizza as I am. In fact, had Bobby G's been around back when I was attending Cal I'm certain that I'd be dining here often. Free wi-fi, televisions on both side walls and an impressive beer selection would have kept me coming back. Bobby G's also serves paninis, thick crust pizzas and pan-fried pizzas. I was glad to see a NYC style pizza place in the area. What's even cooler is the environment; jazz, sports on the tele, art. A cafe like atmosphere. The people are friendly and they carry Guinness. So what's the problem? I thought the pizza was only ok. I liked the crust on the edge but it was a big soggy and chewy in the middle. I'd have to say in an area that's rife with pizza competition, it's hard to say that it's all about the pizza here. However the ambience and vibe make it still worth trying. 3.5 stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Update: It's cool to see a proprietor that's passionate about their craft.
