Humm...not sure what to say about this chain in the back area but I tried their mushroom cheese steak sandwich with steak fries. I decided to take the closed bottle or canned drinks in the frig instead of the fountain as I was not sure of the taste. I always liked the bottles or cans better than the fountain drinks as sometimes it's too much syrup or too much carbonation. It took a good 20 minutes to make our food and we were the only ones eating in the restaurant. There was a lot of pick ups coming in. We decided to eat here. It had pretty clean tables and empty seats. They had a TV to watch he news. They did not accept credit cards and charged $0.55 per debut transaction. Good thing we had cash!! We got our order and it was a pretty good serving BUT the fries had no salty flavor and the sandwich was kind of blah even with the cheese?! I had to add pepper and a little salt to my sandwich. But it was cheap so I decided to rate it three stars. It was an ok meal and nothing special. My other grip here was its next to a liquor store and other small shops. This small "mom and pop" is hidden and located in the corner of a small shopping center-- easy to miss, but the food is so yummy and comforting. I've only been here about 3 times although I live right next to it. I remember when I first tried it I thought it was good but the only down side was that their pickles were soggy and not crunchy. After 2 years of not visiting this place, I went here a couple days ago and I think the food has really improved since. It was already good but this time it was even better. It was juicy and cheesy. The fries were crispy and so was the pickle!! They have 2 sizes. Small or regular. the small is about $5.50 and the regular is a dollar more. This place is located in a small little plaza and their are some weirdos that hang out in the parking lot or in front of the liquor store over there. I live in Fremont but every chance I make it to this part of Hayward I try to order a Hoagy. They have the best sandwiches in town by far. Way better then their "chain" competitors. Bob's Hoagy Steaks has the best hoagy steaks in town by far. Personally, I love how all of the food is prepared right in your viewpoint so the aroma in the restaurant has you anxiously awaiting for your food to be ready. I go back and forth between the cheesesteak and the bbq cheesesteak as they're both equally delicious. The hoagy's are a great size and they come with a generous portion of french fries so I always leave stuffed. Occasionally, I also order the fish fillets which are deep fried. This meal is so bomb!! You can have it with two sides.. french fries, a salad or rice. The fry on the fillets leaves it golden and crispy. There are a few televisions in the restaurant as well which is awesome to have some entertainment while you dine in or even while you wait for your food. I love cheese steaks, but I shouldn't assume that they're all the same. I just learned that there are 2 other locations (Fremont; San Leandro). I can't say for sure, but they at least seem a bit better and more interesting. This location and the Fremont one are supposedly "not related in any way although the owners do know each other" (at the very least, the menus are very similar). This place is owned "by an old Korean couple." The man serves as the cashier, while the woman works in the back. She also busses tables. I wondered if the man was "Bob" (the cartoon chef on the menus looks a lot like the man). My wife quickly insisted that "Bob" wouldn't be an Asian man (she wondered if the Latino cook was "Bob"). The man doesn't say much (he just kind of gestured to me when our order was ready), but is competent and cool. Great Hours: Mon-Fri 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sat 11 a.m.-9 p.m. We went here on Friday night. We didn't get a receipt, but our total was $21.36, and we only had to wait about 5 minutes for our food. There are over 30 items on the menu, and it's pretty diverse (ex: Tuna Salad; Roast Beef Sandwich; Mexicana Hoagy Steak; Teriyaki Ribs; New York Steak; Jumbo Prawns; Hoagy Burger; Vegetarian Hoagy). Although this place is a hole in the wall, the seating capacity is over 30 (the tables and chairs are solid). There are 8 fountain machine selections. There's also a fridge in the left corner. It's kind of small, but features over 12 types of drinks. Unfortunately, there are drinks all over the place. There must not be enough room in the back to store them. You might be reminded of a drink aisle at Costco. It's not very big, but there's a nice TV inside. There's a clock and some wall art on the left. That's really the extent of the ambiance here. The take home menus are very helpful. You can also find some free local newspapers inside. You can find condiments here and there (ex: salt; pepper; Sriracha sauce). We beat the rush. Over 10 people came in shortly before we left. Most of them were together (some tables were joined). The parking lot is old and tight (the small shopping center has been around for at least 30 years- one of the arcade games inside the laundromat is Frogger). Note: All prices include tax. Turkey Sandwich ($7.03): 7/10. My wife expected breast meat (the menu even states that). She liked her sandwich okay, but basically felt like it was made up of deli meat from the store. She received some very large steak fries, and her sandwich was the way she wanted it. Cheese Steak (Regular- $6.81; $10.03 with Extra Meat): 7.75/10. My sandwich was loaded with meat. My meat, though, could have used some seasoning (it tasted fine, but was nothing special). When you ask for Extra Meat, you also receive another slice of cheese. You must not receive much normally, because I really couldn't tell. As far as I know, bacon isn't available here (that's not cool). The French rolls are big and nicely toasted. You could receive more steak fries (the portions were evidently bigger in the past). They're not as great as some other reviewers suggest, but mine were pretty good. (My wife found her fries to be "dry," but she was at least glad that they weren't "greasy." She also only had 1 "crunchy" fry.) Hot Dog ($4.31): 8.25/10. The other item from the Kid's Menu is Grilled Cheese ($3.54). My hot dog was juicy and delicious (it was plain, and so I added mayo and ketchup at home), and I received a decent serving of steak fries. I laughed because my wife ordered a deli sandwich (we actually went to The Cheese Steak Shop yesterday), and I mainly liked my hot dog. Go figure. I want to try a Hoagy Burger and the Teriyaki Ribs.
