Meat to cheese ratio was on point and it also came with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and a pickle spear on the side. Parking lot stays pretty busy at night so you may want to call ahead if you are in a hurry. Staff was very welcoming and everyone said goodbye when I picked up my food. They were laughing and talking amongst themselves while they worked hard in the kitchen. It's great to see happy workers putting out a quality product at an affordable price. Since the Hoagy sandwich spot in Fremont has closed guess this is as close as I can get to a good Hoagy now! Came here with a friend since she was ranting about this place and how they've been there for years and this is a mom and pop owed shop. I ended up getting the Jalapeno Hoagy combo which came with a steak fries. I think I was expecting a super loaded hoagy with cheese and jalapenos but it was decent size but nothing that stood out to me. It was a nice bite to eat while on the way back home but IDK if I would go out of my way to come here again. Hadn't been here in a long time, but went back a couple of days ago and service was great and the cheesesteak is still really good.

So Bob's Hoagy's used to have 2 locations. This one, and a bigger one in Fremont. I don't know how long this one has been around, but I do know the one in Fremont, had been around since the 90's possibly even before that. It was a dive, but it was an institution and beloved by many residents. It also had to close due to the whole property being sold, and is now probably going to get redeveloped into high rise modern apartments. They didn't relocate, so now there is just one. Came in here for lunch with a friend after a round of golf. We both were regulars at the Fremont location, and with me finding this one, I suggested we try it to see if the food was the same. Maybe different family members are running this one, but the food IS practically the same. Cheesesteaks are the focus with Fish n' Chips being the other popular item. The only difference is this place is maybe a 1/3 the size so a lot less seats. And the Fremont one had a huge 'hot sauce' station, where you could actually purchase the bottles, if you found one that you fancied. Don't know if it's a covid thing, but condiments in general were actually hard to spot at this location, I had to do some digging. They are not just laid out on the tables like they used to be. I usually order a Regular Cheesesteak but I always include grilled onions, mushrooms and bell peppers. Sometimes I'll request jalapenos too. There are many permutations on this sandwich here, so just tailor it yourself. It comes with thick cut steak fries which I love to douse with malt vinegar and salt. A regular sandwich and a drink will approach the $15 mark and always hits the spot. The Bread: Nice soft hoagy roll with a slight toast that doesn't get soggy or mushy. They spread a thin layer of mayo on, which I don't recall from the other location, but I could be wrong. It doesn't really need it, so I may omit it for the next out. The Fillings: The beef is totally natural tasting, just super thin sliced steak that gets a good browning on a flat top and gets furthered chopped up with a metal spatula as it's cooking...ting ting ting. Music to my ears. I like the combo of the 3 veggies as they all lend themselves to create a cohesive union. The onions add sweetness, the mushrooms more meatiness and earthiness, the peppers a nice vegetative bite. The Cheese: The other place had a few choices, don't know if this one does. But this is one of only a couple of instances where I will actually nod my head yes to American Cheese. An In & Out Burger is the other. This cheese gets so melted on this classic sandwich that it not only seasons it but ties everything together like a satin bow. The thing with these Bob's Hoagy Cheesesteaks is that they don't boast anything about Philly or the city that claims this sandwich. And honestly this is better than any place that does boast such connections and claims. My loyalty lies in taste and satisfaction, not so much in geographic appropriations. To that this Bob's will now find another displaced cheesesteak refugee from Fremont. There will be many more. My friend who I brought was pleasantly surprised too. We both sent pics to our family and friends that this was indeed a legit replacement. Such a score! read more

COVID-19 SIP Review: I have a friend that comes to eat this from across the bridge. So, figured it must be worth trying. Called ahead and the friendly worker let me know that they are available for takeout. Looking at the pictures online, the mushroom Hoagy steak looked like a good bet. Let me start off by saying that I grew up on the Bob's Hoagy Steaks in Fremont and was devastated when it closed its doors permanently. However, this Bob's Hoagy Steaks in Hayward is still around and thriving. At the Fremont location, I always ordered the "Cheese Steak" sandwich and, fortunately, the Hayward location has the same sandwich. At first I was a little worried that the "Cheese Steak" at the Hayward location wouldn't be as good, but luckily it tasted similar enough to the sandwich I grew up on that I couldn't really tell the difference, which is great! I like the sandwiches here because I grew up on them. However, I will admit that they're not your typical cheesesteak and may not be for everyone. Nonetheless, they make my favorite cheesesteak and I will take theirs over anyone else's. So the good news is that now that I know the sandwich here is just as good, this Bob's Hoagy Steaks will be my new spot. Now, I can't speak for other items on the menu since I have not had them, so I can't say the food here is just as good as the Fremont location. However, I will say that the fast service and reasonable portion sizes are the same. So although I will continue to be sad that the Fremont location no longer exists, I am grateful to still be able to get one of my favorite sandwiches from the Hayward location. read more
